Jeff, love your videos. I've started to gut my bathroom and your video have been very helpful! I got to the drain/over flow line, and found the metal pipe had rusted away. The previous tub would flood underneath as the drain line did not connect to the drain hole. Now it is just a hole in the concrete floor. Not sure exactly what to do from here

  • @j-sgregoire50

Great video - I would add that unless the full bottom of the tub is sitting flush on the floor, it would need to be installed seated in a bed of mortar. This method would pretty much guarantee no cracking.
Unfortunately, I cut corners installing my acrylic tub and it started cracking a lot after a few years

I always put a ledger board along the inside wall to support the inside edge of the tub. A tub full of water and an adult will sag some if the inside edge is not supported from underneath. It is especially noticeable when you use tile and grout for your tub surround.

That is a great video. I recently had a small leak from underneath my bathtub. I tried putting some new plumbers putty on the drain, but while screwing it back on, I managed to cross thread it. The pipe was plastic and not metal like yours in this video. What should I do ? Can I fix this on my own? Is there a way to fix a cross threaded plastic pipe? Thank you!

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  4 года назад +3

Hi Sarah, the only Option you have is to apply silicone to the drain and the threaded pipe and install cross threaded and hope the silicone seals it. otherwise you need to open a hole in your ceiling and install a new fitting to receive the drain. Cheers!

Or just trust in the compression fitting, brass nut and rubber seal. Also, how do we tighten the ABS connector for the down pipe once the tub is in place? Or do you get it pretty close and then trust gravity to keep the water flowing down, until a plug up I guess. Thanks, Zam

Is it recommended to use a bit of the silicone between the tub drain rubber gasket and the brass flange?

Im a plumber from texas. I like seeing how different parts of the country do their work ... this comment is the start of this video
First edit... he is talking about a second floor application
2nd edit... i think just going abs all the way without that funky brass and copper with glue joints would be better
3rd edit... ya i only like compression joints in cabinets that you can access
4th edit... i set all my tubs with a mortar bed to "make it soild"

If your from Texas, Jeff isn't operating from a different part of the country...he's in Ottawa, Canada. Yes...this is an installation over joists which could be a second floor or a first floor over a basement or crawlspace. Canadian building code doesn't require an access panel or shut-off valves for a tub and shower installation, but it's always recommended if they can be provided. The mortar bed provides stability, especially preventing any flex from acrylic tubs and it aids to eliminate that hollow sound when showering.

Thanks again for the videos! I'm installing an american standard acrylic tub. The installation directions say to use roofing nails where the flange meets the studs, but it doesn't go through the tub itself. I've seen comments on other forums about this approach leading to creaking and I also prefer the more solid seeming connection of screwing through to the stud.
Is it ok to use the method you show with screws instead of the roofing nail method in the instructions?
    Thanks!

the creaking comes from the acrylic tub movement when full vs empty. those nails will loosen and then the acrylic rubs against them causing the noise. That is why we use screws.

Great video, just like all of them. But I have a question. I am wanting to instal a shower/bath combo tub, as in the video. But on my non-drain end, instead of it being in an alcove wall, I am wanting that wall to be a tiled Bench area that someone could sit on. I am building this in a tight space bathroom and do not really want to have the 2x4 border on the length of the tub and tile that up, etc. I am hoping that I can put in a tub, wall on the drain side, wall on the inside, then bench on the far side. I can't seem to find anything on youtube that has done this. I am wondering, do I go drop in tub? Or stick with alcove tub and have a lip that is "1 tile" high and attached to the 2x4 bench, then to the wall? Thoughts?

Do you recommend putting window/door spray foam under the tub for support? My tub at my house feels flimsy, the floor flexes a little in some spots.

not on a mirolin tub with a reinforced plywood base with fiberglass pray and post legs I don't. If you have a tub that needs help use sand mix.

Thanks for the video Jeff! Could you tell me what the brand of the drain kit is? The closest I can find is from Kohler around $160 at Lowes. Thanks!

Just got in a brand new Delta acrylic tub and a flyer staples to the installation packet said do NOT use silicone caulk with acrylic. They recommend DAP 3.0 and a couple other comparable bathroom caulks that do not contain silicone.

Ever put insulation around one of those tubs? If you like taking a bath it lets you stay in it longer..

The new acrylic stays warm all by itself. not like those old steel tubs. Cheers!

Thank you. This was helpful. My best friend wants to install a tub so I'm trying to see the best techniques. He's going to have to build the alcove- the tub he wants requires a mortar bed though-- do you have any videos showing how to do a mortar bed for an alcove tub?
Also, do you have any experience installing a direct drain (where the P-trap is under the tub drain instead of the overflow)? I need to correct a DIY mistake from previous owners who cut all the way through a floor joist for the P-trap under the overflow of an above-the-floor drain tub. My plan is to have the overflow sweep over to the drain instead of vice versa, increase to 2" P-trap for better drainage, and create a vent (as it currently does not have a vent-- although later on the plumber tried to add in circuit vents but it is still a mess).

I have a question, as I am currently installing a tub. (Ottawa, Canada) My tub lip on top that you screw into the studs is already about 1/2" thickness. The studs like in this video are not straight or have gaps etc so I have shimmed them like you suggested in this. Only now I have an issue where my drywall doesn't come as far out as the top tub lip which will in turn make the tiling look real bad at the bottom as the tub acrylic lip forces the tile to push out at the bottom. Any suggestions to help with this issue?

I'm getting ready to tear out our shower and put in a tub for my wife. It's steel with acrylic. I was wondering if I used the expanding foam around the tub would this help keep the heat in the tub?

Love your videos. I'm fixing up a nearly 100 year old house that has a 5 foot tub in a 5 1/2 foot space as that is the width of the bathroom. The former owner took up the gap by stuffing boards at the end of the tub. I'd like to have a proper tub enclosure but how do I handle the extra 1/2 foot space that is the room dimension?

Any reason you are using brass instead of PVC? Would you still use brass drain kit if you had not come across flex situation (like relocating plumbing)?
