Its not that hard, once you get the hang of it
It’s mostly a strategy/mind game. There are basic rules, such as a Pawn can move two spaces on its first turn, but one space every subsequent turn, and how the Knight moves in a 2-1 path, but once you learn how they move and the basic rules, it’s tolerable.

i used to tinker with all sorts of stuff back in the day, and i even managed to place Windows form buttons into MSOffice 2003 and the loading screen of Windows XP in it (which is btw a transparent .gif if you're curious)

He's on the good side of decent, and this is a kid's game, so it's not master level, but the 'Amazing' level AI was competent, at least.
I'll also point out he lost to the level 3 AI the first time he played it.
as a chess player myself i was VERY surprised at how good he was. but also the impossible AI was just TERRIBLE

For anyone wondering about the Chess Cheese Strat, it’s formally known as “the Scholar’s Mate” and can easily be avoided by literally moving a single pawn.
More by moving a specific knight before the bishop is in position to defend the attacking queen when they capture your pawn to mate you.
You can tell the game is really great when you can't tell which side you're actually controlling.

As someone who's played chess pretty much their entire life seeing RT play chess was simultaneously amusing and painful as he does not try to go for the fool's check on easy level AI
Shouldn't it be scholar's mate? Fool's mate should be 1.. f6 and 2.. g5, which means black is trying to lose?
And he did do the Scholar's mate at 12:01.
But at 1:23, the easy AI opts for the Scandinavian Defence, which means that the Scholar's mate isn't possible (without intentional moves from black) due to d7 being a viable escape square.

In checkers, you should always leave the back row of pawns untouched, and if the other player does not do this, and you manage to get at least one of your pawns to the opposite end of the board, you eventually win by default, as the opponent will run out of moves
