- Hello and welcome to my channel. I am a train enthusiast located in Victoria, Australia and just want to share some of my journeys with RUclips. Please feel free to Comment your opinions and Subscribe to my channel :)
In this video, we take a look at a sad but inevitable process being the Comeng scrapping process. This video touches on four main aspects of the process. Namely, the stripping, road transfers, chop and a rough timeline. This video is not affiliated with the DOT. Hope you enjoy the video!

Would be greatly appreciated :)
Sad to see the Comeng trains all being withdrawn and scrapped slowly but surely. Ironically ten years ago I used to get annoyed whenever I got a Comeng and not a newer train whenever I was using the network, before I knew much about all things related to trains in Melbourne. Funny how times have changed lol. I just hope they keep a handful of carriages for preservation purposes and maybe even to run occasional shuttles with in the future like the Tait train.
Crazy how time flies. Agreed. Let's hope a set or two is kept
I'm currently living in Sydney for a few years. I feel the same way about the K Sets here. There's only a handful left, and they're only used during peak periods on business days. They look like crap both inside and outside. Plus, they're noisy and uncomfortable. Yet it's oddly satisfying when being able to catch the rare ride.
@@eddielong8663I understand what you mean. I didn't get a chance to ride a K set when I was up in Sydney for a week a year ago, and it looks like they may be retired quite soon so I hope I manage to get a ride next time I'm up, whenever that is. Also really want to ride a V set because I imagine they'd be close to retirement and potential scrapping too.
Great video! It really pains me to see the Comeng fleet being scrapped. I just really like Comengs. It's a shame they're not being sold... it would be cool to go to somewhere like Easey's but with Comengs some time in the future.
Thanks. And yes that would be cool!
Great video, very nice footage. I think its sad that they decided to scrap 314M, it was one of my favorites. If it were up to me, I would have 314M preserved.
Thanks. Yea it is annoying that one for crushed
Also thanks for the video love all the detail and information you give 🙏
Really nice video. Quite sad to these trains go. Even as an interstate enthusiast, I have a huge appreciation for the Comeng fleet, and can't wait to see the remaining fleet in service when I fly down in January.
This was interesting but they should keep them for more trains etc
👏👏👏👏Nice video!
very sad 😢I like the old comeng trains😊
Comengs were here when I was born in 1983 i will miss them
In Hong Kong we scrapped like 29 Metro Cammell EMUs which are all of them. We remove the pantographs and put them inside the train, then at the marshalling yard we remove a window on each side and the window panels, then cut two seats in half and then remove ceiling parts, then saw the roof in, shave off the insulation and then cut the carriage in half, as well as cutting all electrical systems that run through in half. They cut the carriage in half because the carriages are 23 meters, as well as keeping all the doors AC intact and on the train because all their parts that have serviced for 40 years are going to the scrapyard. They put a green cover on them aswell. Scania and Mercedes Benz Actros trucks are used for scrapping.
Also in Sydney for K set, V set and T set heading for retirement and potential scrapping.
A Series in Perth also heading for withdrawn from service and potential scrapping or sale for farm shed like Melbourne Hitachi trains and W Class trams
:((
3:35 thats the first time i ever saw a train crossing a CROSSING
Lol yea
The windows that are removed are probably used to replace scratched/broken windows on the trains that are still in service! :)
You are a smart guy. Your opening drawl spoils your whole channel.
So that was the 314M scrap video and I think their could be a chance that the after the metal of a scraped comeng could be sent to China to the HCMT so that means that even after all of them are scraped it is still possible to ride one
Interesting they never seemed to offer them for sale like they did with the Hitachis. I have land that one or 3 could have found a home.
Front firbreglass only appears to be stripped at North Bendigo, the other cars are sent to the scrap heap with the fronts intact.
And some at Newport too
@@StrayaTrains Yes, 484M and maybe some others
Very odd way of doing things, SSR taking the Comeng sets from Melbourne to Bendigo by rail transfer only to have the shell hauled back to Melbourne by road? Not very cost effective? Great video, did they sell any Comeng sets (like the Hitachi sets) to the private sector?
Agreed! As for selling sets, I am not sure if that is happening or not
A couple hitachi carriages recently ended up there two I believe.
Yes 295M I believe
New trains and new ship and new bus and new tram and cars and new planes
So darn sad. I grew up watching these and they have such iconic Melbourne memories for me. I wish they we staying around lol. I truly hope they keep a set for the future🤞🤞🤞 also why was that a newer set being scrapped with the walk through passenger area?? I thought they were the refurbished they were staying on?
They finished all the Stage 1s and started with Stage 2s which is why some with the closed gangway have been scrapped already
@@StrayaTrains ahh cool thanks for explaining. Sucks so much they have already been scrapped 💔
@@davidrushton3122 Better to be scrapped and then left to rot like a lot of private companies do with their leftover metal machinery.
@@jayjaynella4539 just a shame to see them at the end of their lives. They have been around my entire life, I would watch them as a kid, so lots of memories.
Very good video, but where exactly are the places in Laverton North, Ringwood, Dandenong South and Tallangatta where the Comenges are crushed?
The one in Laverton North is Infra Build recycling in Fitzgerald Rd not sure about the others.
Not sure the exact addresses. As mentioned below the Laverton North one is the only one I know
It would be cooler to keep some and convert them to crew cars.
Indeed
:( like the HCMTS but hate them for the train they are replacing. 😢
Do you upload photos on the vicsig
No as I dont have a camera
Its so incredibly sad watching the trains I grew up with and rode in countless times being banished into oblivion. They have a unique character about them that I love and have been an iconic part of Melbourne for so long. The newer stuff like hcmt is just bland generic garbage which is about as interesting as watching paint dry. My enthusiasm for Melbourne trains will die when the last Comeng set is retired.
The way life is...
I'm a bit older, and saw the *taits* disappear, then *harris*, .. *hitachi*...
If you *love* trains, the smiles etc. won't *die*, it'll just change... it's the way life is...
where is the scrap yard in ringwood?
Heatherdale road I think. I have not been though
The saloon interiors, passenger information systems and general passenger comfort is good. The Comeng traction power system is inefficient and regeneration is unavailable.
which scrap yards did these go to?
North Laverton or Heatherdale
1:55 vicrail comeng
Can i use this video for the video il add a credit as well

@@StrayaTrains thank you so much

This is just sad
Thumbnail gives me Siemens vibes 💀
if had the money will buy one then will doant to new port work sops rail musme
I would instead sell them for low cost or have them instead slowly decay in the desert giving a possible second life somewhere
If only
Need a drone
Straya Trains get MSTS i have a tpv Comeng addon
poor comeng. I dare you to say "scrap hcmt set 1" to the head of train rollingstock.
Wow this is so sad. What a total waste 😢😢😢. They were working fine. They could also have been good for people to buy as b&b’s etc.
Such a waste! I'd love to buy one for my farm :(
Wait for NSW to get rid of the K and V Sets...
