- Hello and welcome to my channel. I am a train enthusiast and just want to share some of my journeys with RUclips. Please feel free to Comment your opinions and Subscribe to my channel :)
In this video, we dive into the process of what happens to a Comeng once it is retired. This guideline covers what happens right from the moment a Comeng is getting retired, all the way to the moment it is getting ready to be scrapped. This video also covers the three Victorian locations where the Comeng get transferred to. These are Tottenham Yard (West Footscray), The McConnell Dowell Rail Plant (Sunshine North) and North Bendigo Workshops (East Bendigo). Hope you enjoy the video!

Would be greatly appreciated :)
Great video, even though it is extremely sad to watch. They will definitely go down as the greatest suburban train Melbourne has ever had. If it were up to me they would remain in service for another 40 years.
Thanks!
comengs barely have a few years left in them with how out dated the equipment is in them. to put in perspective some parts were also used by the swing door and tait electrics of the early 20th century not to mention that the bodies of the comengs have been pushed to their absolute limit with 40 years of taking a beating for the oldest sets which is starting to show with more issues occurring for the sets still running than the newer trains
No doubt the reality. Train faults are much more common on lines that run Comeng on them. Still tho, they have done remarkable in their time
My friend Evan agrees with you, John Citizen.
@@lachlansmith1522 And despite being 40 years old, they are still the nicest train to ride in on the Melbourne network and a lot better than some of the newer garbage. So much for progress.
They could easily last another 40 years if they were properly maintaned, but as it has been decided to phase them out, the amount being spent on them has been cut and they are being deliberately neglected.
If Taits lasted 60+ years with old wooden bodies then there is certainly no issue with stainless steel carriages that were built like tanks. As for the age of parts, another non issue. With all the technology available these days, any manufacturer could easily reproduce any part that is required.
I’m in tears 😭, I’m not even joking
:(
Wow, Amazing video! It’s very sad to see these sets be scrapped
Thanks :)
Better pray they’d let someone preserve one of them and not wind up like what the Hitachis did.
1:35 - Oh, hey. There’s both a Y and N. Love both of ‘em.
Agree!
@@StrayaTrains it will make a great photos of the dconmisshioned Comeng's
I would REALLY like to get hold of a control panel from the driver's cab of a Comeng, and also the front/back LED clearance lights.
What a video! Everything was prepared and informative! Nice one
Thankyou!
Great video mate I really enjoyed it very sad for these trains though
Thanks alot! And yes, quite sad
Very interesting. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed!
2:50 was actually the first Comeng I ever rode on 523M-1112T-524M way back in 1993 when it wore The Met scheme.
How time flies
@Owen is the best GG i think so
Using a transition coupler sure saves using a match wagon!!!
Great video covering the process
However its fair to say I shed a tear or two whilst watching its a very sad process
I wonder what happens to the parts from stripped comengs
Cheers. Not sure the exact process afterwards. Maybe someone in the comments might
Thank you for the detailed information on what exactly happens to a Comeng train after it has been withdrawn from service! As I've said in the past, the Comeng trains deserve more kindness after their days in service are over. I'm sure that if everyone knew about how much these trains have done for Melbourne, there would be nowhere near the amount of vandalism inflicted on retired Comeng sets.
I do have one question, how do you know exactly when a Comeng set transfer will occur?
All good! Sadly people don't care.
And idk really as there is no set time sadly
They do know how much they have done for melbourne, and that is what makes painting them all the more enjoyable. Being between the galvanized steel giants and painting them is a fantastic feeling and many of graffiti writers painting the trains are also gunzels (just in a vandal's world view, I suppose).
I'm not condoning graffiti or some of the reckless vandalism like the windows smashing or fires, but I hope you understand where they are coming from a little bit
@@allisterjones Yea I do. Alot of people like trains for different reasons. And graffiting them is just one of many
Great Video Man, I'll miss the Comeng's, I always hoped to get a comeng and not a Hitachi. Comengs are gonna be gone but i guess like everyone says their end has to come sometime soon. :(. GOODBYE COMENGS (SLOWLY), YOU WILL BE MISSED A LOT. Tell me mate what do you think?
Thanks. And yea, sad they are getting retired but hey, means we gotta make the most of them whilst they in service!
8:49 These images are sad enough to make a real man cry
:(
Great video Mate you know that they said the new X’trapolis 2.0 and construction starts in 2022 and enter service between 2024 and 2026 the trains will replacing Comeng fleet on Craigieburn line and Frankston line and Upfield line alongside the High Capacity Metro Trains which are also currently being built. The trains maximum capacity is 1241 unlike Comeng trains which had or has a capacity of 1127.
Thanks. Very excited for the X'Trap 2.0s!
@@StrayaTrains Same man I remember over 20 years ago when Epping line(which is now Mernda line) when there is a lot Comeng trains I remember that trains I love the sound of it and when departing and arriving sound before X’trapolis trains took over and Comeng trains are no longer on Mernda line I miss it a lot 😢
@@hassansayyab1194 how time flies. Would be nice to see Comeng back on the North Side Lines. Even for a little bit
@@StrayaTrains That’s true
My heart makes me sad very sad for the comeng train
RIP
Yep another piece of Australian engineering put to rest just like our automotive industry very sad. Soon we will forget how to manufacture anything
Very sad to see the Comeng trains being transferred to meet there fate but they did there time serving the metro network so farewell to the comeng trains they are going to be sadly missed.
Strange they use transitional couplers when the comengs had emergency Janny couplers.
Sad to see these Comeng to a end
sorry not sorry
lol i saw a HCMT train at dandenong with grafitti on it already
Just went past the Tottenham yards and one of the comeng are missing, it’s been moved somewhere
Yea. 473M and 515M were transfered to N Bendigo about 10 days ago
So sad. Definitely my favourite trains. Other then Hitachi
:(
Are there any comeng remaining with the old seat cover?
Sadly not. All are PTV design now
@@StrayaTrains Sad, they looked better imo, at least xtrapolis is still that design.
How do I get the timetable for Comeng transfer? When is the next transfer?
There is no timetable. It just happens in an ad hoc manner. Just like you, I have no clue when the next one will be
It would be great if they got repurposed into a different purpose like tranformed into homes or cafes etc
100%
It sad I don’t wanna see it again
Good vid
How can they push at tottenham if the couplers are gone?
The couplers are still on the Comeng at Tottenham
6:06 1048m interesting 🤔
How do you find out when they retire and where they will go and when
the vicsig website has info about what sets are being retired and where they end up
Yea. VICSIG is great for seeing the state of sets. However, there is no way of knowing when they transfer them. U just gotta go and hope they do!
It'a a pity they can't be repurposed, like the H sets and used on country services.
Agree. Sadly as loco hauled services are on the decline, I cant see this happening. It would def be nice to see them remain in service somehow. Even if its one or two sets :)
Don’t worry, one day you’ll get to see the same thing happen to the HCMT.
Indeed
Hopefully sooner than later
The Siemens will get this earlier i bet
im back, i was going to change my device so the charger was a badly really expencinsive scam but i realliesed that i just bought a cable pr aomething and dont even think about me being a kid edit:i have an ipad im usingthis
