Here's the thing. It's too warm in the US to "just make them here". One of the primary reasons we import from Canada is because it's cold up there. Cold produces stronger maple. We have the same kind of trees (Acer saccharum) in the US, but few places are cold enough to grow top quality wood.
Everything has only gotten more expensive eventhough being outsourced and made cheaper. Profit margins seem to be the biggest cause for price increases.
This vague whataboutism is crazy. Located in Germany where I didn’t even think there were woodshops. I have been working with Chinese companies, and with what was formerly dwindle. For my very own little skate company now I work with a woodshop here in Germany that produces 100% made in Germany decks all made from skateboarders for skateboarders. The price is literally 2€/$ more than a Chinese board. So claiming it is unaffordable is a hoax to me. The companies that ship decks all across the oceans have skyrocketed their shipping cost I wonder why people still deal with that. This and the greed of deck companies fearing during the hard past few years and stocking till under the roof is why things have spiraled out of proportion in hardware prices. And no, you don’t need Canadian maple. You could use US over there. Canadian maple is just a marketing plot. As mentioned before most big deck companies have their inventory full in a unhealthy way. The real reason why many legacy brands go out of business. So they have to sell em at a discount. All whilst the actual cost of producing right now is far from the what a deck right now is. So once all these cheap decks are sold. The customer will be facing a huge increase in pricing. With the true reality of what a deck should be. And skateboarding has achieved this all without Trump. By themselves. Because they frequented the factories in China and Mexico so much that they jacked up the prices too. In order to handle all the requests. You can’t blame this on politics.
@ you are highly welcome. My mother always reminded me that we can’t change the world as a whole. But we can make positive impact on the lives around us. A mantra I go by. And if we all do this. We have changed the world. Skateboarding won’t die. It will have to reinvent itself. The greed and gatekeeping also in media like thrasher has it coming.
Nice text wall. I don't think you understand the concept of profiteering. Even if costs don't impact your end product more than 3%, you mark it up 20% because that's corporate business with shareholders. It's also the "tariff" so you can get away with it. The overstock, after COVID, no joke. However that was the manufacturers reacting to a perceived increase in market share and demand. Once lock down ended and everyone was bruised and bloody, deck sales dropped like a stone from 35,000 ft.
You missed arguably the most important part about the wood all coming from Canada. Everyone wants Canadian maple decks so even if the manufacturing moves back to the US, the wood itself is sourced from Canada and will have the tariff placed on it. Then you can look at the other parts of the skateboard too. Trucks are mostly made in China now as well. Most trucks are made from aluminium, which is refined from bauxite, which is mostly mined in Australia. Even if truck manufacturing moves back to the US, will there be heavy tariffs on Australian goods as well? People don't seem to understand how the world works these days and that's understandable, it's more complex than we've evolved to deal with. We are so heavily intertwined globally now that one country cannot just isolate itself from the rest of the world without severe consequences to their economy and way of life. Just look at somewhere like North Korea.
You're entirely correct. Even if Trump wants to withdraw into isolationist/protectionist policies, its a bit too late to do it now, decades into globalism. Trying to untangle a country from worldwide trade networks is going to be disastrous. Hell, even Elon Musk said that, and he'd pretty much say anything to appease Trump.
You have to consider the nature of inflation. Skateboarding is rooted in a punk rock, anti-establishment culture, but it’s important to acknowledge how expensive gear has become. Starting and maintaining a business is extremely challenging. The process is often overlooked, but to survive as a business owner, you must cover costs for materials, assembly lines, sponsored riders, advertisements, shipping, taxes, warehouse rent, insurance, and more. The best thing we can do now is extend the life of our gear and help the environment in the process. Personally, I regrip my board 2-3 times and sand (or round off) the nose and tail edges to keep it feeling fresh for longer. While skateboarding embodies an anti-establishment spirit, it’s not eco-friendly-it can be harmful and wasteful in the long run. As consumers, we are part of the problem, not just the corporations. Supply and demand is the name of the game.
Very little in the way of private equity or holding companies with stakes in the skateboard industry. Most companies are rider owned and can't absorb short term shocks to the market. I can attest having processed plenty of orders from distributors at a ma and pop skate shop, margins for everyone are razor thin. No one is greedy or getting rich when it comes to skateboard manufacturing. It's mind blowing this stuff doesn't cost more already. Powell just had a pretty stellar deal on completes a few weeks back with their mini logo decks and trucks for under $100?!? This dance is pretty affordable compared to most other hobbies out there. If you're looking for corporate greed check out the completes at target or Walmart that ride awfully and are barely durable enough for pushing around on.
When I was 17, beginner's complete cost around US $120- . It cost less after 30 years(?!). I'm from Hong Kong and I can tell you, Chinese people didn't benefit much from those skateboard factories. I would not say workers were treated as slave labors there, but the difference in cost of labor was immensely huge for sure. Factories didn't promote skateboarding in China, no one skates until recently years, and its still a minority sport there. Bad side of it is uncontrolled pollution and wild spread of poor quality skate products (yeah, Wal-mart boards ). Yes, the price would go up for US consumers. It's just catching up on time, which borrowed from cheap labor from China. I'd love to see more skate products made in USA, as they're usually with better design and quality control. Also built by those who cares about skateboarding. Not someone who built millions board, but don't know how to ride.
It costs to much to start offsetting manufacturing and resource production in the US. The costs of land and construction alone, much less the additional labor costs equipment and training. The result is the foreign company adds the new tax to the cost of production, which increases the costs of the imported good. That new tax goes to the federal government where it will go towards corporate socialism in form of funding military contractors and federal subsidies to big business. You pay more, the skate companies have to scramble to make up losses and big business gets richer. In regards to skating. boards, trucks, wheels, bearings, shoes and other gear get more expensive, but small mom and pop shops that make their own stuff can charge more. Unfortunately, everything else gets more expensive to live, so they don't really get to use that extra money to raise their standard of living..
moving the wood supply from the source to a factory is going to be a big issue in all this. lets say this does force the board companies to move back to the US. since there will be a tariff on canadian products coming here, we will probably be forced to only source wood from the US to keep the costs down, and that could either create a supply issue, or make us buy the canadian wood anyway, so we're still stuck with expensive boards. there will also be a big operational cost to each woodshop to move and set up somewhere new. it may not be disaster, but i think it will be more expensive no matter what, and will probably hurt tons of industries that rely on trading materials between countries
I usually just build my own skateboards and gather all the necessary materials from nearby places. For the deck I just go into the german forrest over here, kill a tree and smash the wood against another tree until it is in the shape of a board. For the trucks I just melt some iron and form it with a melt hammer. For the wheels and bearings I just take some marbles I used to play with as a kid and the bearings I steal from my dads car. you guys should try it too it saves u approx. 100 to 200 Buckeronis
Politics are when societies decide what to do as a collective. Humanity wouldn't be humanity anymore if politics didn't exist. The form we have now is a pathological form of politics, and it hopefully won't last forever. But we will still have politics when our society outgrows the current pettiness.
The Tariffs are good for the brands who get there boards made in America, outsourcing was BlackBerrys demise and many other major companies, the quality is always worse off then when it’s made right in your home.

My first skateboard cost about two hundred dollars I was twelve years old. Today I turn fifty. The price of a skateboard has not changed if anything it is cheaper. I don't think this will destroy skateboarding. It may make it cost a little more. However it was a good thirty eight year run.. lol Back then I think the price of gas was about seventy five cents a gallon. Add this particular moment it's about four dollars and was up to over seven dollars. We are still driving cars. And I believe we will still be skateboarding. Roll forever, my brothers.. 👊😝
I started skateboarding to be free and have fun and I'm going to return to it after being hurt for a very long time to make sure that I make the biggest positive impact on our community that I can. One Love
boards have remained the same price for over a decade. The only thing they are doing is increasing their "total profit" Bring the boards back home and bring back American jobs.
"I told you so," as in what Trump's admin will be saying after they bring manufacturing back to America and force foreign states to drop their tarrifs on us for goods we don't already tariff. If that's what you're getting at, I agree.
@@christophernehus5820 I’d love that but considering damn near 70% of agriculture workers are immigrants and the whole MAGA platform relies on mass deportation it’s gonna be interesting. I hope i’m wrong i really do
i love how you prefaced with saying skating is skating and doesnt care about your standpoint. we all just want to get out and have fun! I really hope that we can make agreements between countries to keep prices down and access to resources a possibility... as a skater from the great lakes region we've felt the pain of big trade; our maple is shipped to China, manufactured into boards or veneers, sent back to the US and screenprinted then shipped to shops worldwide... the shipping process ruins the product and makes the cost explode... i wish we could have the infrastructure and labour laws to make it feasible to profit off board manufacturing in Canada but the shipping structure is just the way it has to be apparently.
Late to the party on this, but the majority of downhill skate companies that are flourishing right now are Swiss, Chinese, Canadian, and American. Mostly carbon wrapped boards for stability and rigidity. It's really messing with our community badly in international costs, mainly for the manufactures trying to create precision trucks. I'd love to do a DH video with you Ricky or recommend you to a worthy local ambassador for representing our sport. There is an event in PR ill be going to in February that has a bowl/park competition mid DH event, would be dope to see you out there!
Thank you so much for making this video. This will definitely influence my decision on the next board i purchase. If your up to it, id love to see where wheel and truck manufacturers are sourcing their products.
It’s simple . All boards made in America will eventually raise the price of your deck. Eventually .we are almost at $75 decks . I’m all for all products being made in America but our prices will sky rocket .
Skateboarding is an incredibly niche industry and sport. Any regulation around it, regardless of a current economical standing, will affect production; cost of the good.
ive always thought of powell as the only skate brand that feels alive, in a business and development sense, in the skateboarding industry. there are some ways to invest in your business that are intangible, like love, that lead to decisions others will pick up and appreciate unconsciously
What would be interesting to get an idea of the potential impact is how many boards are sold by those company in the US and in the rest of the world. Because it can stay cheaper for those brand to keeping making board out of the US because their sales outside the US wouldn't be impacted by said tariffs. You used the example of Powell Peralta making board in the US, and that's a good example because a 109$ flight deck costs 150€ in the EU (around 160$) while a 69$ Creature 'stumps' shape is 70-75 € (80$ roughly). Those outsourced manufacturing allows to sell cheaper both in the US and other regions too.
It's definitely not going to happen overnight. I bet it would take over 2+ years if companies decide to move to the US. and like ricky said above, if trump doesnt enforce heavy tarrifs, manufacturing may continue in China and we as consumers would pay the price.
@lewwylately7467 most skaters are young kids thats dont have the money to start with, locals already struggling. Locals aren't the ones gaining the money from tariffs
Venture and thunder make their trucks here, and they are still cheaper. Plus just this year I ordered a custom pressed and cut deck from sea rat, it’s absolutely awesome and was well under $100 dollars with custom wheel wells and shipping from Cali to NY.

If Skateboarding is Apolitical, someone should really tell the conservatives. I live in Martinsburg, WV, near where Tim Pool lives, and he just recently got in a beef with our local independent skatepark and in retaliation bought out the land right from under them. He say he wants to refurbish and reopen the park, but I've seen no real evidence of that. And if he does, I'm sure there will be a fee attached to use it, and he'll be pressuring visitors for their political views. In addition, Tim Pool recently got caught taking millions of dollars from Russia to promote SERIOUS Russian propaganda. He cried about it and said he didn't know, but come on. When caught, he immediately changed his views. The guy should be in jail. I despise him so much. I find it sad that you used his video in this.
@@markschlenker1948 dude he was legit pushing anti Ukrainian propaganda and made hundreds of thousands (at least) off of it, dont know about the skatepark but you cant argue the fucking russian propaganda
Thats why I buy Powell Peralta boards they are 100% made in the USA by skateboarders. I support the ones who put the effort in to set up their own manufacturing and distribution. Slapping a graphic on a foreign made deck doesn’t sit with me. The government can slap as many tariffs on foreign goods as they want. Dont sell out to places like China and Mexico and you won’t have that problem. It’s greed, laziness or both in my opinion. They can be make in America and still be profitable and it has/is being done.
Its so expensive to set up manufacturing facilities. The labor & equipment costs alone, then the warehouse space, transportation, etc. They will switch suppliers or fold i believe. Just not that large of a market to sustain multiple manufacturers
Economics are political. Skateboarding has historically been banned entirely in 3 countries. Skateboarding IS political. If you think it isn't, you don't have a thorough understanding of what politics are, and how many things it permeates in our lives. Boosting ignorance of politics and what it affects by choosing to insist some things aren't political is itself a political act. Not specifically trying to call you out Ricky, just the concept that isn't political. Cause usually it is. And everything would be better off if we all learned how instead of trying to insist it isn't.
Skateboarding is not inherently political, it's literally just the act of standing on a piece of wood that rolls. If you think that it is you don't have a thorough understanding of what politics are, and usually people who make these kind of claims have made obsessing over politics their whole personality to the degree that it has become self-destructive but instead of trying to deal with their problems they try to force others to be like them so they feel less alone in it, because if the whole world has gone mad your own madness isn't as visible right?
itll probably happen sooner than people think. all that it takes is scalpers to see the opportunity and theyll start literally buying out product everywhere they can to flip on sites like ebay, and maybe even pray on skate shops that cant get boards.
Not an expert, but the way I see it tariffs won't affect boards all that much. I don't think the tariffs on Canada will happen due to how close the relationship is with Canada. Mexico there is more of a chance but still not likely. China may happen, but that one will have the most impact overall because so many goods are made in China. I think the closeness of Canada to the US and therefore lower shipping costs will offset the increase in labor costs, so board manufacturers will return to the US. What is going to be the big issue with Tariffs on China is electronics and plastics. China produces a majority of plastic products, so moving plastics manufacturing to the US would cost billions maybe even trillions of dollars; it's not going to happen, prices are just going to go up. Asia has complete control of electronics; the raw materials, the factories, and the expertise are there. Again, it's just unfeasible to manufacture electronics in the US.
Wow, Ricky You finessed that perfectly… I wish skate boards were $50, but now I skate what’s on sale. Instead of going to my local skate shop. I go to zumiez and get what’s on sale
That clip at the end is one of the problems with skateboarding. Just because someone owns a longboard, that doesn't mean they're less of a skater. It's an attitude that needs to change.
It will help americans not be fucked over by the economy AND the federal reserve at the same time. If overseas companies fail then so be it. America first is all that should matter to Americans.. well that and not being taxed or regulated out of purchasing power.
LMFAO, you dont understand supply and demand. These companies don't need American Sales like we think they do, and sadly the world is already becoming wealthy through cryptocurrency. so many people all around the world are becoming multi trillionaires outside of america.

@Zombiewizard no it will force Americans to buy American and strengthen the American economy. This has all been done before and is exactly why every other country uses tariffs. Either stand strong as a world super power and dictate the well-being of your countrymen by lowering taxes and regulations or jerk off all of these other countries while you accept free trade incoming but not vise versa and increase taxes/regulations on Americans.

@@rickyglaserbecause politics affects everything and everyone. you're making a video about how political outcomes are affecting skating. nothing is free of politics, people just sometimes choose to ignore the political dimension.
The industry will be like Japan. Tons of talent but boards are so expensive that the skateboarding has to change to adapt to the price of boards. In Japan the distribution takes such a large cut that shops have to raise the price of Boards to double what other countries pay. Your average skateboarder can’t afford more than a deck every other month. Shops struggle to stay in business and sporting goods companies run the culture. That’s why competition skateboards are usually the ones that make it. The price of all good are basically doubled and the wages are so low kids can’t buy good.
In my opinion, cutting corporate tax and raising/creating import tarriff should bring jobs to the USA, prices increase probably. But the stimulation to the economy and job market is worth it. Economics is weird, though. But if there is a tariff on Canadian wood, it'll be bad.
@Codisrocks they use US maple for the Powell decks. (Quick google). Mini logo are Chinese made that is why they are cheaper and not as good of quality.
If you want cheaper prices then cut taxes on US companies it’s that simple. Tariffs are just a tax on foreign made goods because they don’t have to pay the same taxes. I agree I want lower prices so let’s be fair to US companies and cut their taxes.
It's a typical subject where politics can not be avoided. Because the assumption is already that this will only ever be a bad thing. But is that even true? Probably not if the economy gets a boost. And there are brands that have their boards produced in US and Canada, without costing triple or double the average. 10% is not much either. 5:30 Boosted boards were insanely overpriced for essentially a complete niche market product. They could never survive anyway. And they are not that good, compared to more and more Chinese clones. Even WITH tariffs they were losing the race against competition.
Paying American workers a liveable wage instead of outsourcing to countries that allow 9-9-6 labor practices sounds downright reasonable to me. And if you really want, you can still get your products off the sweat of an underpaid/overworked Chinese woman. It just won't be as cheap to exploit foreign factory workers anymore. I think a lot of industries, not just skating, are in for a rude awakening when they realize how much it costs to make their product ethically. And honestly, if your businesses can't continue to operate under the pretense of ethics, it doesn't deserve to.
Skater still going to skate. I'm just getting back in to Skateboarding. I have a few videos and shorts. I think you did good on this video and do more like this.
GOOD! The only reason why products are manufactured in China is not because it's 'unaffordable,' but rather Chinese workers are willing to work for a wage so low it would be illegal here; some of them are children! In 2010, over a hundred young workers at Foxconn-a Chinese company that, at the time, produced Apple, Dell and Nokia products-committed suicide due to harsh working conditions and hours that I would consider slave work and some had not even worked for the company for 90 days! The reason is greed. "Why pay $15/hr 20/hr or whatever a decent wage in your state is, when I can pay a Chinese worker a fraction of that?" is the mindset here in the states and it's disgusting!
I am also a random idiot and I mostly just think this whole thing kind of sucks but I do think that we should start manufacturing more in the US. If we stop relying so heavily on other countries maybe we can create jobs in our own and work on our economy but also like I disclaimed already I’m just a random idiot so 🤷♀️😂
@@DeadVegaInSpain It does have to be more expensive. The labor cost in America is a lot higher because we have a lot more regulations than other countries.

Ricky.. if you do just a little research into guitars .. built in US or around the world and a truthful comparison of extremely similar raw materials you can see that skateboard decks suffer through some of the same situations as the global guitar manufacturers. Ultimately the " profit " can be made in the United States just fine but greedy CEOs and board members cant squeeze every last nickle out of the production costs as easily as they can from countries that are running literal slave labor workplaces. Your video idea was good ... people should have more insight into what makes this industry run.
Nah man it will force us companies to bring home manufacturing. Boards will end up being better quality and only be slightly more expensive. Don't worry. America will be great again xx
Awesome deep dive. When the Trump tariffs take hold, we’re all gonna feel it deeply. I can imagine decks hitting $145 and skaters wondering what happened.

There isn't a thing on this planet that isn't political, especially when you're talking about politicians or the economy. The Tim clip is maybe one of the dumbest takes I've ever heard. What, the consumers don't wanna skate cause the factories are over seas? Doesn't translate to any other industry that has outsourced. People still love their Nike's despite knowing they're made with "slave labor." His argument was basically that the best advertising a skate company could have would come from the workers at the factory and that's just crazy talk. I think what are much more likely causes are the isolation we put kids through by making the world a hostile place for them to play in and economic hardship. I've had multiple people see me skating, say "oh wow, I sure wish I could do that, but I don't have insurance and am worried about what would happen if I broke something." Hell, I stopped skating after I lost my dad's health insurance and before I got my own.
Make boards in the USA, like The Boonies/Tim Pool's Skateboarding business venture. Consumers will have to pay a little more for a while, but that makes more sense than shipping Canadian and U.S. lumber to China to get pressed by children in slave labor situations, then sent back to the U.S.
Pretty disgusting to see so many people in support of tariffs without having any clue on what they are. A huge majority of them didn't even know that word existed before. 🙄
Skateboards will go from $125 to $165 per board. Calm yourself down. Make manufacturing actually possible in the US again. We can’t all work at McDonalds, Walmart and social media influencers. That’s where we are headed. 🧐

@@andrewb7432 The wood does not come from canada. It is very rare these days.
Skating has always been controlled by greedy corporations. Its always been over 260$ to build a complete in my neck of the woods
God bro I got a complete for around 220 at my local
@@johnschott3681 you get it. 🤝
If canada grows the wood they should make the decks.
Big companies produce the boards in Mexico and China
Labor cost. If you think that's bad try making it all in the USA with USA maple
Powell Peralta is 100% USA made including the wood, maybe buy a flight deck? They are the best boards and they cost the same as other brands.
moving the wood supply from the source to a factory is going to be a big issue in all this. lets say this does force the board companies to move back to the US. since there will be a tariff on canadian products coming here, we will probably be forced to only source wood from the US to keep the costs down, and that could either create a supply issue, or make us buy the canadian wood anyway, so we're still stuck with expensive boards. there will also be a big operational cost to each woodshop to move and set up somewhere new. it may not be disaster, but i think it will be more expensive no matter what, and will probably hurt tons of industries that rely on trading materials between countries

Skateboarding, like any form of zen, will outlast politics because it is beyond politics 👍❤ hope this helps
Politics are when societies decide what to do as a collective. Humanity wouldn't be humanity anymore if politics didn't exist.

Informative and balanced, well done.
ive always thought of powell as the only skate brand that feels alive, in a business and development sense, in the skateboarding industry. there are some ways to invest in your business that are intangible, like love, that lead to decisions others will pick up and appreciate unconsciously
What would be interesting to get an idea of the potential impact is how many boards are sold by those company in the US and in the rest of the world. Because it can stay cheaper for those brand to keeping making board out of the US because their sales outside the US wouldn't be impacted by said tariffs.
You used the example of
Powell Peralta making board in the US, and that's a good example because a 109$ flight deck costs 150€ in the EU (around 160$) while a 69$ Creature 'stumps' shape is 70-75 € (80$ roughly). Those outsourced manufacturing allows to sell cheaper both in the US and other regions too.

Powell flight decks are made in USA. Thats why 7 out of 12 of my completes are flights. Helps my neighbors in another state have a job.
Fascinating, we need more content like this
Economics are political.
Skateboarding isn't political you tard. Just you and the companies you give yout money to are.
itll probably happen sooner than people think. all that it takes is scalpers to see the opportunity and theyll start literally buying out product everywhere they can to flip on sites like ebay, and maybe even pray on skate shops that cant get boards.

Overseas companies will not fail and products will just become more expensive for the consumer

The industry will be like Japan. Tons of talent but boards are so expensive that the skateboarding has to change to adapt to the price of boards. In Japan the distribution takes such a large cut that shops have to raise the price of
Boards to double what other countries pay.
And your opinion is based on complete fantasy. And you have just shown you have no idea how large economies actually function.
Powell and Peralta have proven it can be done. Support Powell and the important companies will follow. There is a reason they have made it this long.
What wood do they use?
@Codisrocks they use US maple for the Powell decks. (Quick google).
Mini logo are Chinese made that is why they are cheaper and not as good of quality.
If you want cheaper prices then cut taxes on US companies it’s that simple.
Tariffs are just a tax on foreign made goods because they don’t have to pay the same taxes.
I agree I want lower prices so let’s be fair to US companies and cut their taxes.
Chinese slaves? Out of all the developed nations in the world, the U.S.was found to be the worst when it came to workers' rights so...
It's DIY or die, not DIY or out-source it to countries with worse working conditions and pay.
Not gonna ruin my skateboarding. F tariffs, i have enough boards for the next 10 years haha

Ricky.. if you do just a little research into guitars .. built in US or around the world and a truthful comparison of extremely similar raw materials you can see that skateboard decks suffer through some of the same situations as the global guitar manufacturers. Ultimately the " profit " can be made in the United States just fine but greedy CEOs and board members cant squeeze every last nickle out of the production costs as easily as they can from countries that are running literal slave labor workplaces.
