Elvis Sings Hits from His Movies: His Worst Album?

  • RCA released plenty of compilation LPs during Elvis' lifetime. Many of them were fine but Elvis Sings Hits from His Movies Volume 1 must have raised a few eyebrows when it first appeared in 1972. Is it, in fact, the worst Elvis LP released during his lifetime?

    This was my very first Elvis album as I was only 11 years old at the time. I discovered Elvis by watching his movies then I got into his music later on. My mother bought me this album and it will always hold a special place in my heart for that reason.

    Hi David, the Album was certified Gold and Platinum in 2004 by the RIAA. The first american CD Release was a RCA Special Product for AVON Cosmetics in 1996 (BMG CAD1-2567). The CD is pretty rare and very hard to find in these days. In 2008 Sony/BMG USA released a digital remastered CD Reissue (now deleted from the Catalogue). A european CD Edition was never produced by BMG or Sony.

    Not a bad LP song wise, really enjoy the A side. I have the UK version and it is a mouth full 🙂 Quick story, in Aug 1972 or Feb 1973 in Las Vegas a fan asked Elvis to sign a copy of the album - he did of course then turned to Charlie or Jerry (cant remember which) and said "what the hell was that, aint never seen that record in my life?" So I take it the later Camden LPs flew under his radar entirely - got to love RCA and Parker LOL... its a shame Elvis wasn't involved in these projects, think the product overall would have been of higher quality. Great video!

      Great story. I can imagine that happened a lot when he had foreign releases shoved under his nose. I imagine Elvis just laughed off this movies LP but, as you say, it's a shame he didn't get more involved in his albums. Parker would, no doubt, have told him that the budget LPs were outselling his regular releases.

    Soon I'll be starting a blog featuring alternative Elvis track listings. Since this is probably my favorite Elvis channel on RUclips, I'll give you a preview.
    I chose the track listings for the Hits from his Movies albums after I saw your video from about two years ago discussing all of the Camden LPs. Both of our proposed track listings have similarities. To note, the C'mon Everybody, Burning Love, and Separate Ways albums do not exist (at least in budget form) in my discography, so some tracks from them are included here...
    Vol. 1 (December 1972)
    Side 1
    C’mon Everybody
    Puppet on a String
    Kissin' Cousins
    Frankie and Johnny
    Paradise, Hawaiian Style
    Side 2
    Bossa Nova Baby
    One Broken Heart For Sale
    Pocketful of Rainbows
    Little Egypt
    Let Yourself Go
    Vol. 2 (March 1973)
    Side 1
    Down By The Riverside / When The Saints Go Marching In
    Tender Feeling
    Do The Clam
    Spinout
    Rock-A-Hula Baby
    Side 2
    Clambake
    Please Don’t Stop Loving Me
    They Remind Me Too Much of You
    All That I Am
    I Slipped, I Stumbled, I Fell

      Thank you for the kind words. The blog sounds interesting. Please keep me posted. Speaking of alternative song selections, there was a 12-track LP that came out on the RCA Starcall label in the mid-70s called Pictures of Elvis. Perhaps you know it. I think it was a mid-price LP. It has a fine selection of songs, so it really should have been easy for RCA to have done better with the Sings Hits album, even with only ten songs.

    I have no real beef with the Camden compilations, other than their sonic qualities. I have many copies of each of the 70s titles, mostly British and German and a couple of American ones. Overall, the sound quality and pressings are abysmal. I have two pretty decent hifi set ups and I do revisit the albums on occasion to see if I’ve changed my mind. I did it right now after watching your video, David. I haven’t! They are bad!
    As albums I like them, and welcomed the opportunity to get them on CD. Almost in love makes a great bonus collection to Gold Records 4, I Got Lucky and C’mon Everybody were welcome collections of lost EP tracks, and the covers were quite decent, especially the UK Almost in Love, which fits right next to TV Special album, artistically. I’ve got to say, though, it has always disturbed me that up to date pictures of artists are plastered across compilations of oldies - there is a jarring contrast between the packaging and content. I regularly use a local charity store here in the Netherlands and I really see too many of those type of bottom of the barrel effort LPs.
    I have come to the conclusion, after years of buying DVDs of serious, art and classic films in tawdry, bad taste, sensationalistic covers adorned with guns etc. that there may be a strategy at work here. I think this somewhat applies to LPs. Making them LOOK cheap appeals to a certain type of customer. Any thoughts?

    • @ElvisPresleyInJapan
      @ElvisPresleyInJapan  20 дней назад +1

      That's an interesting idea about deliberately making the covers look cheap. I can't imagine RCA bothering to put that much thought into it, tbh. Re the sound, I've discovered that I have a slight preference for the Pickwick pressings. It wouldn't surprise me if RCA had used inferior vinyl for the budget releases.

    • @elvisonwax
      @elvisonwax 20 дней назад +1

      @@ElvisPresleyInJapan Yes, the Pickwick records are very decent. Saying that, US pressings from the late 70s are some of the best, if not the best sounding catalogue albums. I remember thinking that as far back as the 80s when I would have had difficulty hearing the difference.

  • @alexandernijeboer8385
    @alexandernijeboer8385 22 дня назад +1

    Again great video and also a great question you raised: when did RCA do Elvis justice as an artist? Frankly they started the Camden way of compiling albums all the way back to the debut album (LPM 1254) which is a somewhat strange compilation of Sun leftovers and rejects combined with newly recorded songs from January/ February 1956. Although all Elvis albums are very dear to me, to RCA and the Colonel these were just "product".

    • @ElvisPresleyInJapan
      @ElvisPresleyInJapan  22 дня назад +2

      Funnily enough, I was thinking the same thing about LPM-1254 earlier today. "Elvis" was his first "proper" studio album. I agree it was all just product to Parker and RCA but with this one, it reminds me of the Sex Pistols compilation album called Some Product. This LP was the forerunner to that album in all but name. I do understand, though, that a lot of fans like it for sentimental reasons. We all have such favourites.

    • @alexandernijeboer8385
      @alexandernijeboer8385 22 дня назад +1

      @@ElvisPresleyInJapan I have always loved LPM 1254 but thinking of the recordings that could have been included it could have been a far better representation of Elvis' 1st RCA studio work than it actually was. When compiling albums RCA rarely did Elvis justice. Fans nowadays should be happy with the broad and seemingly unfocused Elvis record catalogue. Without all the "product" RCA produced 😉 and without all those cover, content and label variations, collecting Elvis records would be very boring nowadays. 😀

    • @elvisonwax
      @elvisonwax 21 день назад +1

      An interesting mention of LPM 1254. I think it’s evident that it was a cheaply and hurriedly made album at a time when the RCA brass did not believe that would get a return on their investment in Elvis. Even the now iconic artwork has cheap - in black and white. Elvis Presley’s incredible drive and talent made ELVIS PRESLEY into an against the odds classic.

    I much prefer your track listing, but that being said, as a new 10 year old Elvis fan in 1972, for the first couple of years the Camden Albums made up a bulk of my collection and I loved them and played the heck out of them, especially I Got Lucky and C'mon Everybody. It's interesting to me that, for example, the song C'mon Everybody was only eight years old when the Camden album was released but the song was far, far different than what was popular music in 1972. Today, an 8 year song seems to age better simply because massive changes in music haven't been happening for quite some time and I can't imagine any big changes going forward.

    It really is difficult to say which Elvis album is the "worst". I think the catalog has long been a confusing mess. After Elvis died, RCA issued compilation after compilation after compilation, in addition to a gazillion collections of unreleased material, outtakes and live recordings.
    I'm interested only in the original albums and some of the compilations issued by RCA before 1978. Of course, there are some worthy compilations and several of the later boxed sets and FTD releases are worth having, but the majority of the compilations are pointless if you have the original albums. There are simply too many of them.

    • @ElvisPresleyInJapan
      @ElvisPresleyInJapan  21 день назад +1

      I agree. I'm mostly interested in the records released during his lifetime, but they are often frustrating. The post-death releases have been more extreme. There are people in charge who care about the music and how its packaged and who seem to be almost reimagining his catalogue. However, the worst of the worst has also been released since Aug 16, 1977, e.g. Elvis Sings for Children.

It's almost as if I didn't want to spoil my collection with this sort of release. If someone said, I'd like to hear some of Elvis' best work, I wouldn't show them this LP. There are some nice Camden LP's, this is not one of them. There are some nice soundtrack songs too. I suppose it's making the best with what you have.

    If it's not the worse ? Then what is ???

      Well, for me, if it came down just to the music on the record, I'd say Kissin' Cousins. There aren't many songs on there that I like, although it is obviously more coherent than this Sings Hits from His Movies LP.

      It’s sad to say this, and for an LP that was a hit, but I have to make a real effort to listen to Roustabout. It’s weak. Kissin’ Cousins is a bit more fun. Raised on Rock, on the other hand, is an album I WANT to like… and can’t.

      @@elvisonwax The only time I'm likely to listen to Roustabout is when testing a copy I buy, or perhaps when preparing for a video. Same with Kissin' Cousins. Quite happy to listen to Raised on Rock though.

      @@ElvisPresleyInJapan A quick update on Roustabout: I just recently got hold of a green label RCA International copy from ‘81, remastered by Bob Jones.. and I enjoyed it all the way through. It’s an altogether more meaty and serious sounding record than it’s predecessors.

    Kissin Cousins or Paradise Hawaiian Style are probably his worst. However, Confidence may be the worst thing he ever recorded.
