Some of these were head scratchers, some of these were recency bias, almost all of them were wrong. Also imo ranking music from different years, artists, and genres is a fruitless endeavor. There is no inherent metric for how good an artist is so this list just seemed unnessecary. Always nice to see another video from you Dillon! Loved your opinions.
Only A Night At the Opera would be in the running ( though many love Queen II). Their albums were mostly patchy. Elvis was never really an albums artist though Elvis Presley (1956) I would rate highly
@Guitaural. I doubt 25 year old hip hop fans listen to Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Steely Dan. More like something Rolling Stone mag would put together but self conscious that they are licking the boots of 60s and 70s a tad too much!
@@colmd7680 I doubt that they even listened to the Rock or Jazz they included. Just trying to give the illusion of balance. They probably checked some 'trending' list for those selections...lol.
I agree with your thoughts at the end, and it seems like they made a list that "pleases everyone" but begs more questions than it answered, and for what purpose? Lists like these strike me as being for the uninitiated. People who are unfamiliar with the depth and breadth of music history. Also George Michael's Listen Without Prejudice is an incredible album. Happy to see it listed.
I'm pretty glad that jazz wasn't considered on this list (other than the obligatory Miles and Coltrane). I don't like my favourite music tainted by association for this list.
No Clapton?? Floyd, Zep not in the top 10??? I would have thought Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison or At San Quentin would have been somewhere on the list. The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out, who doesn't know Take Five? I do agree that blues needs to be on the list... without it, we might have had opera in Casey Kasem's Top 40 Countdown! Where was Ray Charles? oh well, enough of my ramblings.... Love the channel!
You have to see it for what it is. It's a list that was specifically curated for a younger demographic, with a handful of old trusty classics that are well-known by practically everyone. I have no idea who created this list, but it gives me the impression they were trying to meet certain genre quotas. Like, we need this many hip-hop albums, this many pop albums, this many rock albums, etc. I don't think they took the ranking very seriously because having the Arctic Monkeys above VU & Nico is a musical war crime. Everyone involved in that list has to know how ridiculous that is.
I really appreciate the way you tried to be fair on this and acknowledged that objective lists are dumb when music (and art in general) is subjective. I will say that every hot take you had was right on point for me as a man born in the middle of the country in 1980. I’d love to hear your personal top 100
No matter what they say, what you have to understand is this list is based on downloads. It's what they do. The fact that any pre-iTunes music is on the list is a testament to their timelessness. As for me, I've been a huge music fan for over 50 years, spend hundreds per month on records, but can I can literally count on both hands the number of times I've paid to download anything. In fact, I've made far more money from songs I've written (that are on iTunes) than I've ever spent on iTunes. So this list has NOTHING to do with taste, importance, or influence. So the idea of comparing Beatles to Beatles, or Zeppelin to other Zeppelin albums on this list is a big stupid waste of time. Sure, they've pretended the list is based on "expert" opinions, but it's counterintuitive to think a downloads only "record company" would use some other criteria.
If you read their intro, they say this isn't based on downloads. They call it an "editorial list". However, of course they have links to all the songs for listening, so some bias I am sure still exists.
So, it's the 100 best albums from North America and Britain, right? The rest of the entire world was represented by Bad Bunny and AC/DC? I always look at "Best of x" lists as opportunities to learn about albums and artists I don't know. There is no point in arguing over what should or should not be included, fun as it may be for some people. Having said all that, the overrepresentation of hip-hop but no funk at all was really hilarious. Also, Dillon, I hope your Taylor Swift / Barbra Streisand parallel is going to be food for thought for folks. Although I'd probably swap out TayTay with Beyonce there. A great singer and a very powerful business person who can work with the best and demand the best from everyone around them.
Yeah, the absence of early rock (especially Elvis, but also Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, etc.) is mind-boggling, but then again you could argue that those artists were singles-driven because it wasn't really until the Beatles, around the 1965-66 period, that the concept of an "album" as we know it today really took shape. Before that it was often the two or three hits (if the artist was fortunate enough to have that many), or at least the songs released as singles, sandwiched in with a bunch of filler. But where's Van Morrison? The Who? Only one Dylan record? Only one Stones record? No Al Green or Otis Redding? No Sly and the Family Stone (especially "There's a Riot Goin' On")? And, as Dillon said, no James Brown?
Hey big hip hop/classic rock fan here. To make sense of why hip hop was hugely represented on Apple's list, I believe it is because 1. It's the biggest genre right now besides pop and thus the influence of those classic 90s records is felt much greater than ever before, especially considering its influence on the sound of house and modern pop music and 2. Hip hop is becoming a senior genre as seen with its 50th anniversary recently and thus because of its long lasting popularity the genre is undergoing critical re-evaluation like classic Jazz and rock records back in the 70s and the 90s
The colour of lettering on the sleeve of the Clash´ London Calling is a clear reference to Elvis first album. I miss the Ramones on this list. and Deep Purple and queen are missing too.
I see what you did there. You did that with teeth… I would normally pick up TDS on vinyl, but for my best mental health it’s just something I can never have.. unless I make it a pilgrimage to eventually pick it up..
I appreciated listening to you, as I have so little knowledge of the hip hop LPs. I may give a couple a listen based on what you said (I know Lamar and Public Enemy). I have to say where is Who’s Next? This list leaves me cold. Just as Rolling Stones list did. I did like seeing Led Z ll and Highway 61 vs IV and Blonde on Blonde…..you seem to not like Born to Run but….my gosh that represents the mid 70s so well. I could go on and on…..
BTW, as you love OK Computer, have you given a listen to Radiodread by Easy Star All Stars? It's a reggae dub cove of the whole album and it's (let me be controversial a bit here) nearly better than the original... No, it's different but if you like reggae and OK Computer, this is a must listen. Those guys have done Dark Side of The Moon, Sgt Pepper, Thriller and Ziggy Stardust. I didn't care much for Sgt Pepper and Thriller covers but the others are quite good to me.
ok so maybe more the commercial hits rather than the obscure ones. But you can't doubt these acts and their influence over the decades, sadly missing - Elvis, Queen, The Doors, Rush, Joy Division, The Pixies, ELO, Iggy Pop, The Jam, Split Enz, Tom Petty, Chris Issak, Depeche Mode, Ryuichi Sakammoto, Eurythmics, Roxy Music, The The, The Pretenders, Kool & The Gang, The Supremes, Boney M, Genesis, Van Morrison, David Bowie (Berlin trilogy albums), The Kinks, Blondie, The Cure (the earlier albums are far superior to Disintegration), Beatles' Sgt Pepper, Dire Straits, Johnny Cash, Basement Jaxx (why not, they included Daft Punk?), Saturday Night Fever OST, Billy Joel, Whitney Houston, Earth Wide & Fire, James Brown, Cat Stevens, Duran Duran, Hall & Oates, Simon & Garfunkel, Peter Gabriel, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Tears for Fears, Television, The Animals, The Byrds, The Cars, Vanilla Fudge, XTC, Wire.... and many more
Your music knowledge and openness are refreshing. I clicked this link expecting you to be an old fart about it. I don’t agree with a lot of the list, but I’m trying to see it as a list of what’s best right now, otherwise we’d have a bunch of 50 year old albums dominated the top 20.

This quite simply appears to be a list of albums that have influenced current top 40 popular artists in America, nothing more. This certainly is not the greatest 100 albums of all time! To ignore entire genres and subgenres such as Blues, Country, early Rock & Roll, Prog Rock, Folk Rock, Bluegrass, Swing, etc. Artists such as Van Morrison, Clapton, Santana, Sinatra, Presley, Curtis Mayfield, Allman Brothers Band, Earth Wind & Fire, Mahavishnu Orch., and many more ignored. Even albums such as the soundtracks to Superfly and Saturday Night Fever were hugely influential and popular. And if they're going to include jazz, there are MANY incredible artists and albums left off this list. Again, I believe it to merely be a list that has influenced today's popular artists.

Great choices, all of them except for one: Aerosmith debut album, while definitely showing some potential of hard rock magic to come, is in my opinion, searching for a sound and style that would come to fruition on Toys In The Attic and even more so, Rocks ( as good as hard rock gets! ) that being said, I do appreciate their debut and knew Aerosmith were a very special band.
Some of my now favorite albums have come from your lists. (Savage Resurrection, ThunderChicken etc...) I take a person who knows music's input and advice regarding a list like this way above a tech company. What is ever the parameters of this? Downloads? I'm not saying these albums don't have their place on a list, but this one seemed out of order
These lists will always be made relative to the era they were curated in. Imagine a similar list being made in 1942. There would be a bunch of people just like us saying "You gotta be kidding me! Glenn Miller is number 8 but Jelly-Roll Morton is at 42?? Where's Bix Beiderbecke? He's not even on the list! Outrageous!" If we just kept all the same records that top the lists year after year after year, it's sort of like moving back in time as opposed to making progress and allowing room for other records made in the modern era to be viewed in the same light as all those other classics that people hold so dear. I'm not a fan of this particular list, but I understand why certain records were included over others.
8:45 the roots of punk are the Rolling Stones. Just listen to “Get Off of My Cloud” and “She Said Yeah” from 1965. And with their 1966 single, “Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?,” they also did proto-noise rock. This is all before the Velvet Underground.
As ridiculous this list is, it is still interesting and valuable to have a listen to those artists I normally do not listen, e.g all the hip hop records, Beyoncé etc. I missed out the last 20 years.
It’s fun watching everything we love lose cultural relevance isn’t it? Well, some of it. Some of it also has gained in relevance. I was probably 17 when the Lauryn Hill album dropped, and I thought it was amazing, so it’s cool to see it has only grown.

I’m surprised a night a t the opera didn’t appear
Over hype .. not that great. Especially the Doors. Come on .. over hype. Queen. NAH .. all in all in all personal opinion.
Ride the Lightning still #1 Metallica album for me, no disrespect to Master of Puppets, also a great record.
I had a lot of fun watching this video. Your reactions...always respectful...but man, some of them were really priceless 😂🤟
I just realized there's no Black Sabbath. What the hell????????????
Just glad that Paul's Boutique got a spot. Bought the 8 panel gatefold the day it came out and still have it. Incredible record. How did Sgt. Pepper not make it?
Some of these were head scratchers, some of these were recency bias, almost all of them were wrong. Also imo ranking music from different years, artists, and genres is a fruitless endeavor. There is no inherent metric for how good an artist is so this list just seemed unnessecary. Always nice to see another video from you Dillon! Loved your opinions.
Thanks!
Perfect kind of vid dude, and pretty much agree on all fronts, ac/dc also sparked my interest in rock n roll. 7th grade late bloomer
as soon as I saw something called Solange on the list I laughed and didn't bother looking any further
I'm shocked that there is no Elvis and Queen.
Only A Night At the Opera would be in the running ( though many love Queen II). Their albums were mostly patchy.
Elvis was never really an albums artist though Elvis Presley (1956) I would rate highly
@@colmd7680 Patchy!!!!Jesus Christ on a bike!Only the Beatles could rival their output.
The list was probably compiled by a 25 year old hip hopper with very little knowledge of music - I guess we shouldn't be surprised ; )
No Grateful Dead? No Yes? No Genesis? No Thelonious Monk? No Eric Clapton? Wow.
I'm pretty glad that jazz wasn't considered on this list (other than the obligatory Miles and Coltrane). I don't like my favourite music tainted by association for this list.
Rolling Stone: "Here's another insane top 100 list"
Apple: "hold my beer..."
What a legend for uploading in hdr
The list was titled “greatest of all time” and yet quite a few albums don’t have any time in them at all.
I’ll mention it because others won’t but: Reign In Blood, maybe on the 75-100 area but no doubt must be there as the flagpole metal record.
No Forever Changes?
Yes!
Great video. Excellent perspective about these types of lists, but I loved the look you gave after the Drake album.
Love the way you went through the list, you have a new subscriber keep the videos coming. 😎
No "Tommy" by The Who?
If there's gonna be a Who album on the list, it should be "Who's Next" ...
Or Who’s Next!
I'm amazed Queen's A Night at the Opera wasn't on this list, especially given how popular the band is to this day
*I was hoping to see your eyes popping out of your head. Another great video Beardo.*
I should mention, I've bought hundreds of $5 movies on iTunes, but again, I don't download music
If you read their intro, they say this isn't based on downloads. They call it an "editorial list". However, of course they have links to all the songs for listening, so some bias I am sure still exists.
@@spacedvest Yes, thanks for rewording exactly what I said. :)
@@thepaulhendersondon’t wanna be the bearer of bad news but iTunes doesn’t exist anymore buddy
@@Aypher well don't tell them because there's an hour left on the movie I'm watching right now...
I really enjoyed your take. It made it more fun.
Is this based on downloads? Where did this data come from?
No Fraction Moon Blood?!
I KNOW!!!!
Seriously this one SHOULD be in the top 100 at least!!? One of my TOP personal favorites!
What about Graceland?
This list is geared towards potential subscribers to Apple streaming. A younger demo.
So glad you spent a lot of time on "A Love Supreme". Top 5 album all-time, no question.
As soon as I saw Back in Black at #90 I new list was a joke. That album was so huge.
Wild that there was no Phil Collins or Peter Gabriel “So” and the earliest albums were the two jazz albums.
"So" definately deserved to make it
Did not read the criteria used, was stream numbers part of it? That would explain the ranking.
Supreme Clientele by Ghostface blows any rap album on this list away.
It’s kind of a niche record. To a non hip hop fan it would be hard to digest. Like for me Murda Muzik is a better album than Lauren’s
Lauryn sorry auto correct
The only comment in this dumpster fire of a comment section that makes sense.
i think the next genre after hip-hop is electronic music (despite it's been around longer) and maybe more pop music.
The colour of lettering on the sleeve of the Clash´ London Calling is a clear reference to Elvis first album. I miss the Ramones on this list. and Deep Purple and queen are missing too.
>Downward Spiral only #74?
Heresy!

I see what you did there. You did that with teeth… I would normally pick up TDS on vinyl, but for my best mental health it’s just something I can never have.. unless I make it a pilgrimage to eventually pick it up..
@@You_Do_Have_The_Power_33 if you ever have the chance to listen to the SACD in 5.1 you're in for a trip hum treat (well both) ;-)
I appreciated listening to you, as I have so little knowledge of the hip hop LPs.
VHI has a 100 Greatest Albums book published in 2003 so many on here would not be there of course but their #1 was Revolver by the Beatles, the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is # 37. This list is good for a laugh but that is all.
Thank you !! Thank's for the depth of your analysis and the variety of the styles you enjoy !
You are absolutely right, James Brown, Queen, Elvis and much more deserve better ! where are Sting, The Police, Supertramp... where are George Clinton, the funkateers as Cameo, Gap Band, Zapp & Roger ? One album only of Michael Jackson ? That can't be serious !
Scorpions... and no not english speaking artists ? Brazilian, french, Italian...

Dylan, my brother, it’s all subjective as we know and is generationally geared. We all get it…in a perfect world, we would see Townes Van Zandt’s 3rd self titled LP, and the Flying Burrito Brothers, Guilded Palace of Sin, and Muddy Waters’ Folk Singer

I really like your measured commentary. My list would look very different but I have nothing against most of the albums on the Apple list. Ok. Missing for me: Gram Parsons, REM, Big Star, TRex.
I appreciate you talking about what qualifies for these lists. What criteria did Apple use? Most played?
No Ryuichi Sakammoto!. You made many valid points. To be classic, it has to be 20 years old at least
Not at all. To Pimp a Butterfly for example is already attaining classic status. It's omission here has caused some controversy
The Band, The Kinks, Nina Simone, Tom Waits, Simon & Garfunkel, CCR, Frank Zappa etc etc. They should have labeled it their “favorite”
100 albums.
At least you didn't post a vinyl purge video like the masses. Omg.
Because people go through collective mental shifts. Right now there’s a big shift among others where people are resenting excess, in the VC it manifests as a bunch of people thinking to declutter at the same time, then RUclipsrs seeing eachother doing it creates its own snowball granted of course, but it’s not arbitrary is what I’m saying

The Rolling Stones: Exile on Main Street
Spirit: The Family that Plays Together
Bob Dylan: Modern Times
Buena Vista Social Club: Buena Vista Social Club
I think this is a fantastic exercise all music lovers should do. You can really learn a lot about someone from a list like this. Love seeing Buena Vista Social Club in there. Criminally under-discovered by Millennial and young generations.
Jesus Christ superstar is a great album, only musical I have on disk. I must say I listen to the first disk more than the others by a lot
Does Ry Cooder play on Buena Vista Social Club? Thanks.
"27 Led Zeppelin 2". Sigh. 🤣🤣🤣 I feel your pain.
This is a terrible list.
P.S. where the heck is The Sex Pistols Never Mind the Bullocks…a template for generations of punk & hardcore…I’m old…😂
Or Gang of Four - Entertainment
As ridiculous this list is, it is still interesting and valuable to have a listen to those artists I normally do not listen, e.g all the hip hop records, Beyoncé etc. I missed out the last 20 years.
