Hello. Mr. Ed. I bought these back in the day. Still have them. Literally wore them out. Still have the inserts, except the poster in the Bol 2 set. Was Not in the box when bought even tho it was sealed and bought new! Oh well. Now I have mom 8 tracks, Cassettes, CDs! That is very. Very. Very nice of you to give those away. USA guy interested here! I bought these when they came out. My entire Elvis 1st pressing vinyl collection was stolen back in the 1980s.
I started my Elvis collection in 1968 with the newly released Gold Records Vol 4. By then all the mono LPs of the 1950s were out of print. I DID buy up as many of the leftover EPs I could still order. These two boxes provided me with a lot of material that was not ERS. (Electronically Reprocessed Stereo) for the first time and it was revelatory. Now the 60s material I will always prefer the true stereo anyway. But ERS totally sucks.
Three major objections I had and still have are:
1. Volume 2 is not in chronological order (and volume 1 is by release date instead of recording date, making the likes of Crying In The Chapel, Wooden Heart and Ain't That Loving You Baby a bit jarring in there sequencing).
And 2. They did not find room for the Jailhouse Rock version of Don't Leave Me Now. All of the rest of the Jailhouse Rock EP is included! I would sacrifice Puppet On A String for Don't Leave Me Now, even though I LIKE Puppet On A String. Or they COULD have put Puppet On A String on volume 1 (It was the A side after all) and eliminated Wooden Heart altogether.
Finally, 3. Some lesser flip sides (like Where Do You Come From) are on Volume 1 while much bigger selling A sides like His Latest Flame and One Night are on volume 2!!!!
I think I could have made a better lineup for each volume by simply putting all the songs in chronological order by recording date, AND putting the 50 biggest hits on volume 1 and all 50 of the lesser hits on volume 2. I DO realize that the later hits were too late for volume 1, which HAD to be on volume 2, that is to be expected.
Volume 2 is loaded with selections of his best selling Extended Play Albums. (Sans Don't Leave Me Now from Jailhouse Rock), and hits that came after volume 1 was compiled, such as The Wonder Of You, I've Lost You, The Next Step Is Love, You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, Patch It Up, There Goes My Everything and I Really Don't Want To Know and mostly B sides. But the stumper is why are A sides such as Puppet On A String, His Latest Flame, One Night and Ask Me on volume 2? (Tell Me Why notwithstanding). They could have swapped places with the numerous B sides on Volume 1. Any of these are bigger than Where Do You Come From or Playing For Keeps, and a couple others. I am not saying there shouldn't be ANY B sides on volume one, many were bigger than some of the A sides on Volume 2. I mean Hound Dog AND Don't Be Cruel should both be on volume 1 as just one example. What'd I Say charted higher than Viva Las Vegas, and yet it is nowhere to be found.
We need these to be reissued in the same manner of quality as The Album Collection. AND we need a brand new release of ALL his Gold and Platinum lifetime singles (both A and B sides) collected in one box set, in chronological order of recording date. Posthumous releases, remixes, duets need not be included. I would allow My Way and Unchained Melody however. (If they indeed were certified Gold)
Confession, being ignorant at the time, I expected to see ALL the songs from the 4 volumes of his Golden Records series on here. It racked my brain not to see What'd I Say, Love Letters and Indescribably Blue on these. These 4 albums already had 48 songs and I KNEW his hits during his comeback were his biggest since 1960. I could not figure out why only FIFTY Gold Award Hits in the first place when Volume 1 came out. When Volume 2 came out I was partially placated. But then again, RCA/BMG/Sony has yet to fully satisfy me. Even The Album Collection and The Complete Masters leave a lot to be desired.
I have a bootleg that collects both of these volume on 4 CDs and it has bonus songs. But it contains a few errors. But I still recommend it. "Made in Mauritania"
