What fascinates me about Brandy's story is how perfectly it illustrates how sometimes we're attracted to those who are emotionally unavailable. Brandy could probably have any sailor in her town, but she isn't interested in any of them even though they imply that they would leave their jobs and stay in order to be with her. Instead she fell for a man who immediately made clear that he won't settle with her, that he will prioritise his life at sea over his relationship with her. In a town full of options, she goes for the emotionally unavailable man. Why? Unresolved issues, fear of intimacy, self-sabotage, low self-esteem? I feel low-key called out. Brandy homegirl, we prolly need some therapy.
I'm a bagpipe maker and a sailor. This song is made from everything I'm made from. It's timeless as measured in centuries. You have to know sailors, sailing, the sea, and peoples of the world who sing their stories in musical scales of only 5 notes like "Brandy" to realize how timeless. This song wasn't invented--it was discovered. Best wishes and thanks to author, the band and those who brought it to us.
Looking Glass was the main act at the senior prom of Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington NY in June of 1976, playing their biggest hit song Brandy, which was a #1 hit a few years earlier, more than once.
Wow, I never knew that! I went to the Great Neck North Senior prom in 1977. We're a stones throw from Port Washington. I never knew Looking Glass played there.
That is really cute. Beautiful graphics of the boat upon the sea (the ship), etc. We all love that song forever! 💜 Animation by Javi Vaquero per info box.
Shoutout to the random guy at the airport 10+ years ago..who asked me for my name..and then proceeded to say…”what a good wife you would be.” Without that silly gesture..I might have missed out on one of the greatest songs to bestow my inner ears. Here’s to you! 🍻
I was also named after this song but my dad wasn’t a sailor. He didn’t even have a sailor’s tattoo. Although, he is cremated and apparently they dump the ashes in the sea, so I’m pretty sure he’s on the ocean floor or a speck of ash in a fishes eyeball or something down there. So he’s still not a sailor but he’s with the best of ‘em. (I LOVE my dad. He was autistic and loved music so much. That’s why he said he named me after this song in 75.) True story!
Yea I'm definitely not a sailor, but I played the same sax he had aboard ship. in school for 6 years. He was in some bands with it. So that's a pretty cool memory. I should really get it re padded and tuned up. Be fun to play it again.
This is a great song. Takes me back to my childhood in the early 1970's. Always loved it on the radio. So evocative of those times. I would love to go back to those days I tell you.
LYRICS: [Verse 1] There's a port on a western bay And it serves a hundred ships a day Lonely sailors pass the time away And talk about their homes [Verse 2] And there's a girl in this harbor town And she works layin' whiskey down They say "Brandy, fetch another round" She serves them whiskey and wine [Chorus 1] The sailors say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl (You're a fine girl) What a good wife you would be (Such a fine girl) Yeah, your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea" [Verse 3] Brandy wears a braided chain Made of finest silver from the north of Spain A locket that bears the name Of a man that Brandy loved [Verse 4] He came on a summer's day Bringing gifts from far away But he made it clear he couldn't stay No harbor was his home [Chorus 2] The sailor said, "Brandy, you're a fine girl (You're a fine girl) What a good wife you would be (Such a fine girl) But my life, my love and my lady is the sea" [Bridge] Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes When he told his sailor's story She could feel the ocean fall and rise She saw its raging glory But he had always told the truth Lord, he was an honest man And Brandy does her best to understand [Verse 5] At night when the bars close down Brandy walks through a silent town And loves a man who's not around She still can hear him say [Outro] She hears him say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl (You're a fine girl) What a good wife you would be (Such a fine girl) But my life, my love and my lady is the sea It is, yes, it is" "Brandy, you're a fine girl (You're a fine girl) What a good wife you would be (Such a fine girl) But my life, my love and my lady is the sea It is, it is, yes, it is"
Musical and emotional perfection. A song many will sing 200 years from now in bars of ports of call… it feels so real. It is like a story my grandfather told of old… of the One he let slip away….
I LOVE this!! I always envisioned this song as taking place in the era of tall ships and pirates, likely in Bristol or on the Cornish coast. So romantic. "One day, in this harbor town, the tavern’s landlord and his wife found a baby girl left on their doorstep, whom they raised as their own. She had beautiful hair the color of the finest brandy, so that’s what they called her."
Art imitating life. That song was the story of my life. I married that bar maid. We lived happily till 2 years ago when she passed. I've felt the ocean calling me over these last 2 years. I'm going to go finish my life at the ocean next year. End where it began.
Loved reading through the comments. So refreshing to see so many like-minded souls appreciating this timeless classic. I think it resonates differently for each of us but, most of us end up at the same place. At 59 years old now, I have, so many times, played out my own video in my mind as I listened to this entrancing song. Just as many others, I could see Brandy serving the whiskey & wine to the lonely sailors. Not only that, I could emagine all the come-ons and advances she must have endured. I could picture the beautiful chain with the locket from her lover. The chorus kicks in and, I can relate to the pain of being in love with someone who is not there. "My" mental picture of Brandy is a slim brunette with a simple beauty that needs no makeup and (of course) the most beautiful eyes that leave you breathless. I can feel what she is feeling, as she walks through her silent town, her heart yearning for her love that is not around. A hugh shout out to all those involved in the creation of a very good video to help us enjoy this classic masterpiece.
You are a romantic! How lovely your vision was. I'm 60 and damn if this song doesn't take me back to the best days. I always pictured her a blonde but I like the idea of a brunette. I used to tend bar and loved it when someone would play "Brandy" on the jukebox. My name's not Brandy and I didn't serve sailors, but I did served the lonely-the military, the hardworking man, the office worker. They all had a story to tell and just needed someone to listen. LYRICS:
[Verse 1]
There's a port on a western bay
And it serves a hundred ships a day
Lonely sailors pass the time away
And talk about their homes
[Verse 2]
And there's a girl in this harbor town
And she works layin' whiskey down
They say "Brandy, fetch another round"
She serves them whiskey and wine
[Chorus 1]
The sailors say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl
(You're a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
(Such a fine girl)
Yeah, your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea"
[Verse 3]
Brandy wears a braided chain
Made of finest silver from the north of Spain
A locket that bears the name
Of a man that Brandy loved
[Verse 4]
He came on a summer's day
Bringing gifts from far away
But he made it clear he couldn't stay
No harbor was his home
[Chorus 2]
The sailor said, "Brandy, you're a fine girl
(You're a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
(Such a fine girl)
But my life, my love and my lady is the sea"
[Bridge]
Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes
When he told his sailor's story
She could feel the ocean fall and rise
She saw its raging glory
But he had always told the truth
Lord, he was an honest man
And Brandy does her best to understand
[Verse 5]
At night when the bars close down
Brandy walks through a silent town
And loves a man who's not around
She still can hear him say
[Outro]
She hears him say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl
(You're a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
(Such a fine girl)
But my life, my love and my lady is the sea
It is, yes, it is"
"Brandy, you're a fine girl
(You're a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
(Such a fine girl)
But my life, my love and my lady is the sea
It is, it is, yes, it is"
