In the early 70's my parents rented a cottage on the shores of Lake Huron. My Dad always brought his multi-band portable radio. It usually got turned on when the sun was just rising over the lake. This is one of the songs I remember playing and it remind me of the happiest times of my childhood.
Both of my parents are long gone. I now have that radio. It still kinda works and I listen to it at my cabin now.

Pretty unhip, technically, but everybody just kind of lingered to hear it, so I aimed my speakers out the third-story window onto the quad and started it over, at top volume. There's a port on a western bay
And it serves a hundred ships a day
Lonely sailors pass the time away
    And talk about their homes
And there's a girl in this harbor town
And she works layin' whiskey down
They say, Brandy, fetch another round
She serves them whiskey and wine
The sailors say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"Yeah, your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea"
    Brandy wears a braided chain
Made of finest silver from the North of Spain
A locket that bears the name
Of the man that Brandy loved
He came on a summer's day
    Bringin' gifts from far away
But he made it clear he couldn't stay
    No harbor was his home
The sailors say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"
Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes
When he told his sailor stories
She could feel the ocean fall and rise
    She saw its ragin' glory
But he had always told the truth, Lord, he was an honest man
And Brandy does her best to understand
At night when the bars close down
Brandy walks through a silent town
And loves a man who's not around
She still can hear him say
She hears him say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"
    It is, yes it is
He said, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"

It's impossible to say what makes this song so great. Great tune, great instruments, vocalization. And the lyrics are so haplessly tragic despite the upbeat tune. She's got all the qualities that any guy would snatch up in an instant but she's destined to be alone because instead of guys liking her as a person they'd rather prefer the personification of the cruel, hard, lonely life of the sea. And despite all this, there is a happy sounding chorus extolling Brandy's virtues.

@LindaOliver, that's true. When I was 13 my best friend had a crush on a girl named Brandy in Jr High School. When he finally told her he discovered he had a Brain Tumor after we had been Boxing a little and had an unusual headache. His parents took him to the Hospital a few days later where they discovered it was about the size of a Golf Ball. He was placed in the Hospital for surgery. For two yrs he lingered in and out of the Hosp until he finally died on Fathers Day 2 yrs later. My point,,,every time I hear this song I think about my friend who died waaay too early at 15 years of age.

@@1computernew You're welcome. Ya know to this day me and his Mother are still friends, and I'm 57 yrs old. At the time Jeff and I were only 13. When I hit him, he fell back against the wall and slid down. I was even laughing at him. But when he was still complaining of a headache an hr later I had my Mom take him home. Days later when he was diagnosed w the tumor, being only 13, I blamed myself and told his Parents it was all my fault. They reassured me it was Not my fault. According to the Drs he had been born with it and it just got bigger. But I couldn't help it, I still blamed myself. He was my best friend and was fine before we started boxing. He lingered in and out of that Hospital for 2 years. He went through absolute Hell, and I never once heard that kid complain. He was one of the toughest kids I'd ever met. I guess I just needed to share that story again. Thankyou for your condolences.

Loved reading through the comments. So refreshing to see so many like-minded souls appreciating this timeless classic. I think it resonates differently for each of us but, most of us end up at the same place. At 59 years old now, I have, so many times, played out my own video in my mind as I listened to this entrancing song. Just as many others, I could see Brandy serving the whiskey & wine to the lonely sailors. I could picture the scene of the hardwood floors, the rustic tables, and our lovely Brandy setting down the many mugs of beer and the shots of whiskey in front of her many customers. Not only that, I could imagine all the come-ons and advances she must have endured. I could picture the beautiful chain with the locket from her lover. The chorus kicks in and, I can relate to the pain of being in love with someone who is not there. "My" Brandy is a slim brunette with a simple beauty that requires no makeup and (of course) the most beautiful eyes that leave you breathless. I can feel what she is feeling, as she walks through her silent town, her heart yearning for her love that is not around. A song that invokes so much emotion and personal connection, experienced by so many. I am right there with you - my heart going out to Brandy, my admiration for her faithfulness and, my hopes that she will have her lover with her again very soon.

    Sing along ....
    There's a port on a western bay
And it serves a hundred ships a day
Lonely sailors pass the time away
    And talk about their homes
And there's a girl in this harbor town
And she works layin' whiskey down
They say, Brandy, fetch another round
She serves them whiskey and wine
The sailors say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"Yeah, your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea"
    Brandy wears a braided chain
Made of finest silver from the North of Spain
A locket that bears the name
Of the man that Brandy loved
He came on a summer's day
    Bringin' gifts from far away
But he made it clear he couldn't stay
    No harbor was his home
The sailors say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"
Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes
When he told his sailor stories
She could feel the ocean fall and rise
    She saw its ragin' glory
But he had always told the truth, Lord, he was an honest man
And Brandy does her best to understand
At night when the bars close down
Brandy walks through a silent town
And loves a man who's not around
She still can hear him say
She hears him say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"
    It is, yes it is
He said, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"
