👩🏽🎤I grew up very poor in Glennville, Georgia. There were few fine things my mother was able to share with her seven children in the 1970s other than her belief in God, cooking, shelter, clean clothes, and music. Looking Glass's hit, "Brandy" was one of Mama's favorite songs, and when it played on our household radio, the volume had to be raised; Mama insisted on it. Tapping her feet and patting out the beat on her knee was her way of getting into the song. Now, I have that sweet memory each time I hear the song. Thank you for sharing this music with lead vocals by the original singer. What a blessing for my old heart. Thank you, Elliot Lurie. 🙏❤❤❤👏👏🙌🙌😊 Date: April 9, 2024

What an awesome rendition! As a kid I used to listen to my transistor radio on my bike on a road that had a giant hill over looking the lake at Grand Beach, Canada. A few times Brandy came on when I was on top of the hill looking at the water over the trees. I remember feeling pure excitement hearing any note of the song, especially the doo doo doo doo doo doo dit dit! To me it meant summer, sand, root beer, freedom and fun at the beach!
I was named after this song. My dad was a commercial fisherman & loved the water. Both of my parents have passed away so any rendition of this song is beautiful to me!
That’s so beautiful! My hi school sweetheart was a brandy kind of girl. She has beautiful auburn hair. I heard this song today on 70s on 7 Sirius XM and as music does it’s like a time machine that allows one to look back in time. Brandy the song is timeless. Even my kids enjoy hearing it.

@@braidedchain Mr. Lurie i wanted to tell you that i sing Brandy to my daughter as she goes to bed almost every night. Your work always brightens our nights! Thank you so much.
I closed my eyes and it brought me back to my days as a child listening to this song on the radio sitting on the stoop in Brooklyn . Those were the good days of innocence and listening to good music.
@@braidedchain I'm not Vinnie1142, but I was born in Brooklyn, lived in Gerritsen Beach, Marine Park, Flatbush Ave and Beverly Road, and a couple other locations all in Brooklyn. My family moved out to the Island. I finished school in Patchogue where I became best friends with the younger brother of the lead singer for the Del Satins. They did back up work for Dion and were a strong draw on there own. I wonder if you knew any of these guys.
"Brandy" was a hit when I was 13 years-old. It's one of all-time great pop songs because #1, it's a truly great story. Yes, incredible background vocals, horns, overdubs, and superb instrumentation, but at its heart, the song captured the world's imagination because of the narrative. It has everything that a great film has: three acts, a theme, a protagonist, antagonist, mystery, conflict, and finally resolution, albeit without a happy ending. I would argue that the fact that the song has a bittersweet ending elevates the song even more. The song was written by lead guitarist and co-lead singer of Looking Glass, Elliot Lurie (now a senior citizen), but Elliot still has the pipes! I love this acapella treatment!
When Elliot Lurie wrote this and Looking Glass recorded it, he truly caught lightning in a bottle. This ballad is as fresh and evocative today as the day I first heard it back in high school when it was originally released. Nice job guys! Thanks for publishing this.
My Boyfriend asked when we were dating if our first Daughter born could be named Brandy. Well yes of course. In 1977 we had a our baby girl and he was shinning like a 1,000 watt light bulb. When the Nurses asked what her name is He said Brandy!! So proud, they announced her weight as 7.7lbs. A few nurses/Doctors in fun start calling out drinks, lol. We had 2 more brilliant daughters in the next 2 yrs. (May he rest in peace 2008)
Elliot, this was wonderful. this song brings back such nostalgia for so many of us when we were young and carefree. thank you so much. beautiful sound.
I had "forgotten" how much I loved this song. What a wonderful return to a simpler time. Thank u Mr Lurie! For the original and this reboot when the world needed it most!
What is magical about this song is that it's from a bygone era and they were singing about a bygone era. It's absolutely timeless, tender, and heartbreaking for the two people it's about. Brandy and the sailor. Yet sung with a happy melody. Everything about this song is magical genious.
True, when Men loved the Sea like a lover and rarely wanted to leave her arms. Traveling to a new port constantly. Free and never tied down to the labor of the land.
Remembering listening to this song in high school, then in '78 I joined the navy at 17 and when the bar was open on the ship, this song got played a lot, and I mean a lot. Now having been retired for about 25 years, this brings me back to a time when life was easy and the world was a much better place. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Lightning can strike twice! I was 12 or 13 when this song and a TON of other great songs came out. The best time to be alive in modern music times. Now, 50 (FIFTY!!!) years later, Elliot is kind enough to gift us with this. His, and his supporting talent, enthusiasm for the masterpiece is icing on the Gold!!! (I incorrectly said silver earlier!) Anniversary Cake!
I met Elliot Lurie in Chehalis, Washington where he did a solo concert...his vox, guitar and a decent city park PA. It was a wonderful night and show. Some songs never get tiring to perform or listen to. This is one of them.

Man, this is one of the coolest strip-down tracks I’ve ever heard. It would’ve been a hit acapella! One of my favorite things about the Looking Glass story is that the band held out to sing (& play) on the record, as well as to push for their ideas on the arrangements and instrumentation- not an easy thing to do in ‘71 or ‘72 for a new band on the NY scene without a track record. The backups are just unreal and the lead vocals unique and so COOL that this one song lives on and spans the generations. A great legacy. This is one of those great songs that simply had to be recorded.
@@hawksailor I think you're thinking about "Shannon". I doubt a dog could work "laying whiskey down", or that the sailors would think a dog would make a good wife.
This just popped up on my recommendations. FANTASTIC. Elliot sounds as smooth as he did in the 70s. I wish songs still told stories like this. I've heard this song so many times, and every time a movie plays in my mind. Love it.

Wow! What a treat! In addition to some great vocals, I think the best part of this version is the slight smile and twinkle in the eyes of Elliot Lurie. It seems wistfully reminiscent, as the song recalls a long ago love and the singer/songwriter relives a time, a lifetime ago, when Brandy topped the pop charts. Thank you for sharing this song, and this version, with us, Mr. Lurie.

When this song was a #1 hit and I was a teenager, I can still remember riding in the car with the dad of some kids I was headed to babysit and Brandy was playing on the radio. I was blissfully unaware of the fact that I was tapping my feet and mouthing the words to the song, until I noticed him looking over at me. All I could do was shrug my shoulders and say, " I love this song!" He chuckled and said, "Yeah, it is a good one." Feels like that was just yesterday and I still love the song! 🥰
The original version of Brandy is a song I will always treasure. I remember hearing it in my Dad's 1970 El Camino when he would drive us home from school. This is an amazing rendition of the original that brings a flood of those memories back. Brandy will always be in my top 5 songs. Thank you so much for doing this and sharing it Elliot. Michael Jackson had a song called. Time waits for no one! If I had a time machine. I would never comeback! A lot of our loved ones. Were alive then. Just a simpler time. Families were close.
It can becalm and transport adults I can attest. A lovely memory! Music is the fruit of love, rock on.
Beautiful ! I remember how popular this song was in 1972, finishing high school and starting college. It was on every radio station and played in every restaurant. 48 years later it still has a special place. Thanks for your gift to all of us.
Thanks Mark.
I was in junior high. Always loved it. I still know all the words after all this time.
I was working at Howard Johnson's restaurant and bought my first car during this era. What a wonderful time being alive back then.
You still got it, Elliot!!
My wife and I listen to Brandy all the time, it’s got to be one of the best songs ever written. This version made both of us smile! So wonderful!
Elliot Lurie hasn't lost a step, has he? Sounds great.
Thanks Joshua.
I saw him perform with Yacht Rock Revue a couple years ago and was blown away how great he sounded still!
Elliot Lurie you’re just as sexy now as when I first saw you perform back in the day. That voice is pure gold! Thank you for sharing and brightening my day
@@braidedchain Mr. Lurie i wanted to tell you that i sing Brandy to my daughter as she goes to bed almost every night. Your work always brightens our nights! Thank you so much.
Love this song! One of my top radio favs and because we played it in highschool marching band. Best to twirl too!
As an ex sailor I can understand the feeling in this beautiful piece of music. I just love this TRUE acapella version.
I closed my eyes and it brought me back to my days as a child listening to this song on the radio sitting on the stoop in Brooklyn . Those were the good days of innocence and listening to good music.
Brooklyn! What neighborhood? I'm from Gravesend.
@@braidedchain lived in Bushwick on Palmeto street in late 60’s till April of 71.
I was 12 when Brandy hit the airwaves. Loving it still !!
When Elliot Lurie wrote this and Looking Glass recorded it, he truly caught lightning in a bottle. This ballad is as fresh and evocative today as the day I first heard it back in high school when it was originally released. Nice job guys! Thanks for publishing this.
I agree!! Some songs just make you feel like you're in that moment when it was new and fresh...music is a very powerful and beautiful thing!!💯🎶🌻
Agree. I couldn't have said it better.
since my name is "Mandy", that how we sang it in 72ish when I was 13 ah those were the days.
I, too, and named for this song...Dec 73...on request of my dad. ;-)
sorry for your loss
I wanted to name my 1st daughter Brandy, because of this whimsical song. Wife said no.
@@threalismaradona9899 Thank you
Beautiful and sad.
Elliot, this was wonderful. this song brings back such nostalgia for so many of us when we were young and carefree. thank you so much. beautiful sound.
Thanks Susan.
I agree 🥰
Carefree? LOL. Dude, I was flying jets in Pensacola Florida.
I remember the days hearing this on repeat...
Well done!!! Can't stop listening..have you done more songs like this?
one of the greatest pop songs...ever ! pure magic....
Elliot sounds terrific! What a wonderful arrangement.
Thanks Jack.
True, when Men loved the Sea like a lover and rarely wanted to leave her arms. Traveling to a new port constantly. Free and never tied down to the labor of the land.
This song actually brought me out of my depression! Now it allows me to soar with the angels daily. Thanks Elliot for This priceless gift!
That grin on Elliot’s face, love it. And the Young Guns, holy smokes. This was great in every single way.
Ditto!
I can't believe how much I dig this version, I keep returning to it !!!
Thank you for this gift Mr Elliot Lurie & Friends !
Thanks. Cheers!
Elliot Lurie, you will live forever through this gorgeous tune.
Thank you kindly.
I met Elliot Lurie in Chehalis, Washington where he did a solo concert...his vox, guitar and a decent city park PA. It was a wonderful night and show. Some songs never get tiring to perform or listen to. This is one of them.
I enjoyed that night James.
@@braidedchain I'm getting ready to make a phone call I don't want to make, and listened to this song first to put me in a better frame of mind. It worked great, and I loved watching your face while you sing it, like you're really enjoying it. Thanks for bringing so many people so much joy. Have a phone call to make now...
There is only one word that comes to mind when I listen to both versions of his song....
" Perfect "-
Man, this is one of the coolest strip-down tracks I’ve ever heard.
Thank you kindly.
Just beautiful!!! One of my favorite songs!!
This has to be one of the top 5 songs that you can just hear over and over through the decades and it always gives you some sunshine in your life.
This song makes me melt every time. I don't know what it is about it.
Me too!
@@hawksailor I think you're thinking about "Shannon". I doubt a dog could work "laying whiskey down", or that the sailors would think a dog would make a good wife.
@@lisapuma6059 I stand corrected I was thinking of the song from the O'jays
is this original singer?
William Williams yes🎶🎤🎶
I remember this song as a kid! He still has “it” after all of these years! 👍
This just popped up on my recommendations. FANTASTIC. Elliot sounds as smooth as he did in the 70s. I wish songs still told stories like this. I've heard this song so many times, and every time a movie plays in my mind. Love it.
I hate remakes of my favorite songs of all time. It pains me to say...this was very well done. Congratulations gentlemen! Very well done.... Just realized this was the original singer. Explaines alot. Good for you man. Thanks for being a part of a song me and my friends would sing along with when it came on. And quite enthusiastically! Kinda like when a song like Sweet Caroline came on. Sure we where obnoxious, but we had fun!!!
Thanks Doug. Sing along any time.
Oh my God. I'm 57 year old blubbering man, baby. This made me cry. I loved it that much. Thank you...
You and me both, friend. just turned 60...and i choked up, listening. What a wonderful job they did, and takes us 'right back' to our longing for 'decades past'...and the amazing, 'roaring 70's, we grew up in! Cheers!
Wow, thank you!
Thanks.
I'm in, I was in 6th grade and watched my big boy neighbors get drafted, my good friend Ron had a heart transplant 4 years ago due to Agent Orange, he's my Sailor, we send this song back and forth constantly, and he's the reason I wear silver....
I used to sing this song with a good friend and coworker, he unfortunately passed away and whenever i hear this song i think about how much we used to love singing this song together. what a beautiful rendition of a great song, you love to see it.
Condolences on your loss Michael.
Mr.Lurie it is honestly an honor being able to listen to you sing this song to this day. And the smile you have while singing a song you’ve sang over a hundred times warms my heart. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you kindly.
Just golden, so many memories, Elliot killing it
Thanks Max.
Lurie still has the sexy, undefinable jazzy voice. WOW. The best!!
He just got a great delivery always loved this song and he hasn't lost his voice one single bit.
Two years ago, and I watch this almost every day.
HOW???? if I didnt see this with my own eyes...never in a million years would i believe it. WOW JUST WOW.
I just discovered this video a couple days ago, and I must've listened to it a thousand times so far. I've always loved the song, but this rendition is the absolute best by far. Mr Lurie, your voice still sounds as soulful and beautiful as it did in 1972. The harmonies from Yonge Guns are awesome too. Thank you all for performing this great tune and sharing it with the world!!
Thank you kindly.
@@braidedchain The song is so emotionally evocative and the way you sing it so visually clear. Thanks from Maine!! Especially appreciated at this time of more than usual aloneness.

So glad I found this video. I was 11 in 1972 when this song came out. . Brought back so many memories. Great version..The 70's were the best.

I can't say enough good things about it!!! I just LOVE IT!!!!! I love them both SO MUCH!!!!! Thank you again for letting me enjoy your beautiful music, your beautiful song & being "Brandy" for a few minutes each day!!! Much love to you all!!!! Thank you!!! Love you all!!!! ♥
Lurie.
Wow, thank you!
I love that this song is sang just by the men !!!! I pull this one up a lot!!!
This is probably one of the best things I've heard on RUclips this year. Elliot Lurie still has that something and .... man, this song brings back such memories. Great acappella voices too. Thank you for making my day.
I listen to this 1st thing every morning at 5 am with a coffee and cig...then I'm good to go tackle the day!
Elliot Lurie and these wonderful singers do this proud. TY
Oh my God. What a treat and talent. This is one of the most beautiful songs that I grew up listening to. Elliot et al, bravo. Simply beautiful.

I have loved this song for nearly 50 years and this is a brilliant rendition. Elliot’s voice still makes the song.
Wow! Always been a fan of original but this is right neck and neck with it. Well done! Being a US Navy veteran I've always enjoyed this song !!
HE still has the voice even as the years are catching up.This song will be sung a hundred years after he has left this planet for a different plane of existence.
We should all be so lucky.
I love this performance so much, especially seeing how much joy Elliot's face expresses.
I have always love the original and now love this too. Just one fabulous song and singer.
You're a true legend.
Aww, thank you Mike.

This was such a huge hit in 72, my freshman year in high school. It still holds up for me! What a great arrangement and what a great sound. Quintets are rare and rarely have this great of a sound.
Thanks Steve.
My freshman year too!
I used to listen to this song on the Huntington Beach pier in 1972. I was going into my freshman year. A Horse With No Name was popular too.
Love this song. This is one of those songs that when it comes on to the radio it’s like a blast to the past and you can’t help but sing along and reminisce
