EVERY video I've watched of Elliott singing brandy, he has a smile on his face. The song is absolutely timeless and is at the top of list for the greatest songs ever recorded.
@@braidedchainI would have left a separate comment, but Scott's encapsulated most of what I was going to say. I am 43, and so I grew up hearing this on the radio. Over the years, I've thought of it from time to time, seemingly out of nowhere. And while I especially love the keyboard in the original, this is actually the best version I've ever heard. There's not one wasted word or note in the whole song, and hearing it "unplugged" accentuates that. All the best.
I've loved this song from the first time I heard it back in the early 70's.An excellent example of songwriting and to hear the Chili Peppers cover it....well that solidified it's multigenerational impact it has had for over 50 years. Thanks Elliot for the great tune and the memories it evokes for me personally.
I got tell you: I am the music director(And morning DJ) at my radio station in Northeastern NC & Southside Virginia and we still get a lot of request for this song. An absolute classic, maybe the best of all time. I've played a lot of music thru the years on the air. I started in radio in 1983. It was an Oldies station and again, THIS song was the most requested. What does that say? People love Great music. ALWAYS will.
Elliot, you can still do it. Classic voice and a classic song that will live forever. God bless you for exercising your amazing talent to write this gem!!! 😊
That voice is still incredible. I was 7 in 1971 and hung out with my dad that summer while he built our house. This song played several times a day on his radio and everytime I hear it I'm immediately brought back to that place and time. Such a perfect song indeed. Thank you Mr Lurie.
Years ago when I was a wee lad I fell in love with the original version, then earlier this evening I heard your a capella version, and now a solo rendition - each every bit as good as the previous one. Thank you three times over, Mr Lurie.

He should be happy. He's probably made a crap ton of money from this "one-hit wonder". Most songwriters would love to make the kind of scratch he's doubtless made.
What a gift it must be to have written a song that touched and continues to touch so many people around the world. As young kid I remember riding in the car with my dad and hearing Brandy come on the radio. He would always reach for the volume knob and turn it up a little and we'd both sing it together. Absolutely one of the best story songs ever written. It tells the sad story of Brandy's loveless life working the bars where sailors frequent and whose first love is the sea. Great lyrics and a great melody to boot.

Ahhh. This song!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Whether listening it as an “unplugged”, or as recorded, it is still a masterpiece! And your vocals are unparalleled!! Thank you for sharing this!
Man what a song. It tells a story that you can close your eyes while listening and see it play out in your mind. This song is one of those special ones that will last forever.
First time I heard this song was the summer of 72 when I saw the Atlantic Ocean for the first time at Sandy Hook state park when I was eleven years old. Loved then been loving it since! Great Song Thank you.
I was just 20 years old when Brandy came out. My father was a sailor and I have never met him. I can understand the love Brandy has that would never be hers. Your voice just carries me away to those feelings. Beautiful for all time.
I discovered this song recently on a station that was highlighting 70s music. I instantly fell in love with it. Now I have seen so many different performances and I realize this is a song that there will never be a bad version.
Elliott… Not only is this certainly one of the most identifiable and awesome songs of all time, but it has been at the top of my list since before I even had a list. I also really enjoy all of these performances that are out there because the arrangement doesn’t matter. Between the composition and your voice, it still tops the list. I’ve been carrying this song around in my head for 50 years, and I just want say, thank you, man!
I’m 54 with a 14 yr old daughter. I’ve tried to expose her to as much of the music from my youth as I can. As a result, she knows all the words to this and plays it all the time for her friends. Hopefully, the love of my music she has will be given to others her age. This was also the song I used every Karaoke gig I had to start the “show”.
This song came out when I was 12 years old. I understood the "impossible love" theme of the song, but the adventurous sailor part really struck a chord in me. Since then, I have visited more than 40 countries and lived in 5 of them for a good part of my adult life. I am 60 now and have become that sailor. Still overseas and planning my next big adventure.
Bravo Anthony...."Desire is the key to motivation, but it's the determination and commitment to unrelenting pursuit of your goal that enables success."
Hope you never treated a girl so badly. 😉. As I've said before, he could have married Brandy. If he returned home then good for them. If not she would have been an honorable widow with a seafarer's pension. Sans that, she probably ended up a fat, bitter, lonely spinster crying over that braided chain and wondering how she could have been so stupid. [Love you, Mr. Lurie - shame on your sailor for likely taking the best years of Brandy's life in that harbor town which was likely a venue where everyone but Brandy knew she was being played. Honest man my eye, Captain - more like Ricky's Traveling Man!!!]

@@chipgaasche4933 Chip ... I respectfully disagree. The numerous bands, singles & duos that perform 'Brandy' ... at least in these parts ... get a great response every time. Why? It's what we call an 'anthem' song-- like 'Don't Stop Believing', 'Sweet Caroline', Living on a Prayer, etc. Music-loving concertgoers scream out Brandy's joyous chorus in unison at the appropriate time! Other than a Beatles tribute ... not sure I've heard 'Obla' on anyone's set list-- with all due respect to the Beatles. This longtime musician is thinking of adding 'Brandy' to our playlist soon. It really paints a picture that never fails earning a smile. Hope we can do it justice!

When this song came out, I was living in Guam with my parents (I was a Navy brat). Since the island had only one radio station, I did not listen to the radio therefore I never heard the song. It was not until I came back to the states that I first heard it. Even then, it was not on the radio, it was on a KTel Record commercial. This was one of the songs featured in the advertisement. I had just gotten a cassette/radio combo stereo where I could record the radio on a cassette player. I found an AM station and would lay awake at night waiting for Brandy to come on so I could record it. I finally, got it. It had a DJ talking over the intro but that was fine. Eventually, I saved up and bought the KTel album just for the song.
This song always makes me think of my older brother Howie. The first time I heard this song was with him and he taught me the lyrics he used to watch me a lot when I was little and we listened to lots of great music like this. Howard became a Merchant Marine and sailed all over the world many times and had hundreds of sailor stories. They would all begin with “So there I was”. He loved the sea, it was part of him, he carried it around inside of him. My brother, my hero, my best friend was 2nd Engineer on El Faro which sank in Hurricane Joaquin with all hands on board near the Bahamas on her way to San Juan PR from Jacksonville. These songs mean so much to us it keeps the memories alive. Thank you it really does mean a lot.
Oh, my goodness, this is beyond wonderful to watch/hear! I have loved this song since I was a young girl in the 70s, and now my youngest child (15) has it on her play list and loves it as well. Thank you for all the joy (and sometimes comfort in bad moments) that this song has brought me through the years!
This song has always teleported me back to my teen years in the 70s. Different songs bring back different memories. Things you thought you had forgotten come drifting back to you via a nostalgic trip down your play list.
Elliot, you wrote one of the greatest story telling songs of all time! Top 5 of all time for sure with a strong push for #1. Thank you! I sometimes sit here and watch the original 30-35 times in a row.
Elliot, this song is buried deep into my conscience. One of the first songs I can remember at 6 yo. Summer here in Australia, my friend up the street had a teenage sister who played this song and "Windy" till the vinyl wore out. Incredible songs that transcend time.

I found an AM station and would lay awake at night waiting for Brandy to come on so I could record it. I finally, got it. It had a DJ talking over the intro but that was fine. Eventually, I saved up and bought the KTel album just for the song.
Jeff Sulman wow dude thanks for that story!! I had forgotten all about the Ktel albums!! We’re showing our age brother!!!

Sorry for your loss, but glad to hear of the special bond you had with your brother. Peace.
Love a story in a song. I've loved this song forever, since I dreamed of sailors and far away...
Love writing story songs.
@@braidedchain Oh my word, you are a legend Sir, I am all of a flutter now!
@@braidedchain Sad story with a slight (only slight) similarity to the story in 'A Taste Of Honey'. :-) Sad and hooky - a very strong combination

I always loved this song!
Thanks Dave.
One of the first songs I fell in love with! The bass line, the words, the chorus, your voice 😍 loved this version:)
Thanx Gabriel!
Thank you.
What a beautiful song. I remember this song when I was a small child 👍😁
Love the original back in '72 but this is just BRILLIANT. Nice job.
Many thanks!
Thank u, I look up this song several times a week.....love the music☮️
Thanks!
This song has always teleported me back to my teen years in the 70s. Different songs bring back different memories. Things you thought you had forgotten come drifting back to you via a nostalgic trip down your play list.
Great song from a great band from the best decade ever!!!! So glad I found your channel, looking forward to hearing more music..Thank you !🤗
Thank you!
Elliot, you wrote one of the greatest story telling songs of all time! Top 5 of all time for sure with a strong push for #1. Thank you! I sometimes sit here and watch the original 30-35 times in a row.
To coin a phrase(well, okay, I'm stealing the phrase), 'they don't write 'em like that anymore'. Applause! Applause!
Thank you Wes!
Elliot, this song is buried deep into my conscience. One of the first songs I can remember at 6 yo. Summer here in Australia, my friend up the street had a teenage sister who played this song and "Windy" till the vinyl wore out. Incredible songs that transcend time.
This is one of those songs that makes me realize I'd rather write a few great songs than a hundred average songs.
Completely smooth man you still got it Elliot. man that's so groovy. I love this.
Thanks Darren.
LOVE IT
This beautiful song is what I call a perfect song, where everything fits together. Besides, your singing is great with your characteristic soulful voice. Tanks, Mr Lurie.
Thank you Antonio.
