  • This episode of Retro Read Through looks back in time to White Dwarf issue 174, released in June 1994. This issue saw the launch of Death Zone for Blood Bowl Third edition, Warhammer Armies - Undead for Warhammer Fantasy Battle, and also featured an amazing battle report between the Armies of the Undead and The Empire.
There was also a fantastic article on converting miniatures by Mike McVey, featuring a certain Blood Angel and some amazing pictures from Games Day and Golden Demon 1994.
This is the Fifth episode in the 'Retro Read Through' series, and I'd like to get back on track with this, so I'll be taking a look at many more old White Dwarf issues as well as old Codex books, Army Books, older rulebooks and sourcebooks etc. They might not be the most popular videos in terms of views but they are fun to make and a great trio down memory lane.
If you enjoyed this video, please let me know by giving it a like, and do let me know in the comments what you'd like to see next in the Retro Read Through series - do you have a particular issue you'd like to see?

Great video! Thank you for taking me down memory lane. I must have read that battle report 50 times as an 11 year old. All those colours everywhere…how could I not become a life-long hobbyist?!

Ah thanks Nick! Yeah, I know what you mean, I used to read the magazines over and over, and it captured and hooked me in to a world I’ve been in ever since 🙂

Strongly considering this issue as a candidate for a White Dwarf rematch battle report. You can mount a Necromancer on a manticore using the Old World index army, and adding some allies from Tomb Kings would get you very close to the army Dieter Hellsnicht uses here...

Just checked, and it's called an Abyssal Terror in the list, but it has wings and a poisonous tail, so it's basically a manticore. He can have the ruby ring of ruin to replicate the staff of flaming death, and the sword of battle to replicate the chaos runesword.

I've got the Champions of Death still unpainted in their box... such cool models!

Not sure if I read that one specifically but definitely brings back nostalgic memories, GW had a totally different vibe for a kid in the 90s!

Yeah every time I read one I’m taken back to waiting patiently for White Dwarf every month to see what was coming, and Saturday bus trips into town to go to my local GW

Thats a Squat Rhino. In second edition the Squats could take Rhino's and Land Raiders.
