Interview with Yvonne Ryding Miss Universe 1984 along with Miss Universe historian Daryl Schabinger and fashion designer Darryl Jagga.This interview was conducted in 2022 to be used in the final documentary The Rise and Fall of Miss New Zealand.
Director Neil Gussey takes us on a ride back in time to catch up with our most famous winners of Miss New Zealand from the last 60 years, and recall their stories of winning the crown and heading overseas to represent New Zealand. Featuring Lorraine Downes, Elaine Micall, Delyse Nottle, Colin Mathura-Jeffree, Nikki Lovrich, and Dame Trelise Cooper.

This interview was so invigorating to watch. It’s amazing to know Miss Universe had such dedicated fans even back then :) I love Daryl Jagga’s stories and it’s amazing that he can recall details so well and that life brought him to the front row and meeting the contestants back then! In the 1980s, yvonne was my favorite miss universe. She looked so sweet, gentle and very beautiful.
Lorraine Downes from new zealand is also like yvonne. I love them both. Porntip from thailand and angela visser from holland and shawn weatherly from the US round my top 5 from the 80s. The latinas were also sweet. The 80s of big hair and big shoulder pads did not ruin the beauty and personality of the winners. Sweet, gentle, gracious.

I remember vividly Yvonne's crowning. I thought that she was so humble and beautiful. I thought that the dress was awful though (just being honest). Yvonne still remains beautiful and humble to this day!
