Can I just say how much I adore Alphonse as a character. It would have been so easy to have Ed overshadow him in the story, but even though he doesn't get quite as much screen time as his brother, he is still such a pivotal character. He isn't overly reliant on his brother, has agency, goes through his own turmoil, is just as intelligent as Ed (maybe even more intelligent at times?), and has proven time and time again how incredibly important he is to the overall story. Him sacrificing himself for the greater good and having unwavering faith in Ed still gets to me to this day.
The show establishes very early on how complementary they are, Ed is the MC but Al is certainly not a side kick. I wouldn't say he is as intelligent as Ed though. As far as alchemy goes, Ed is an unprecedented genius. Human transmutation, even if it doesn't work, is insanely complex and Ed managed it at 12 with only a few years of training. He also managed to use his own soul to perform alchemy. And he is generally the one making intellectual breakthroughs. Al is the better fighter and more emotionally intelligent, and as far as traditional intelligence goes he is probably quite brillant, but Ed is a prodigy in his era.
You guy should definitely react to the bloopers of this show, they are amazing.

It should be noted, that alphonse’s body who he has been speaking to beyond the gate, was HIS version of the Truth. In the same way Edward’s version of the Truth had his arm and leg, Alphonse’s the Truth had his whole body. The Truth acts differently depending on who it’s interacting with, being a literal reflection of the person. As Alphonse and Edward’s gates are intertwined, they can potentially interact with one another’s versions of the Truth
I like how many reactors to this episode always miss the key thing about the zoom in on Alphonse's crest- the cracks in the armor next to it. The shot was showing us that any further movement, any further attempt to get closer to Edward to save him, runs the risk of that crack crossing through the crest and ending Alphonse.
Watching the bloopers is a must!

I just love Al so much, he is my favorite character not only in FMA but the whole anime genre.
Ed calling 'god' a novice is one of the most iconic moments in the show for me - perfectly sums up his character.
ATLA’s finale is always number one in my heart because I watched it premiere when I was 11. But this is such a close second. I’ve never been more excited and stressed watching a series final battle in my life. Cheeks clenched, hands off the wheel the entire time 🙇♀️ The pacing of the fight is just perfect. Every moment tops the previous one. Emotional punches and twists happen at the best times 😶🌫️
Edward gets his arm back and everyone realizes the boy has been holding back the entire series.

He wasn't holding back. He was BEING HELD back because of the philosopher's stone inhibiting ALL alchemists from their true potential. And thanks to Scar, the inhibiting factor no longer exists

"Get up you novice!", is somehow one of the hardest lines of dialog in the history of anime. And snapping on Father after Al's sacrifice is so badass.
I could be wrong, but I think Edward only got his arm back and not his leg.

Yup, he already had lost the leg and sacrificed the arm for Al so that's all he get's back, equivalent exchange.
Yep. The leg was lost from trying to bring their mom back. He sacrificed his arm to bind Al's soul to the armor

This episode and the next are peak anime for me.

Such a cool parallel to the beginning where Al chastises Ed for almost sacrificing himself for him. Now Al is doing what he said was too dangerous.

I feel like this is worth noting;
Using an arm that has had absolutely no physical exercise for the last three years, Edward tore a length of rebar out of both his good arm, and *the concrete.*
Well, for all we know, the Truth was using that arm on the Shake-Weight, like they saw on TV.

I really like how absolutely messed up "father" gets here. One of my personal hangups with some anime stuff is when a character does something tremendously cool, usually a big sacrifice as well, like a character uses themselves as a distraction to let someone else do a big move or whatever, but cause it's not the end of the arc yet, the villain just basically no sells it after a huge buildup/monologue or whatever. Which usually just completely undercuts the impact of the moment imo and usually that happens like, 3 or 4 times as well.
Here, he is not reacting to a lot of the attacks but then when Edward does cut loose near the end, it's wildly powerful and father is like, screaming right before he eats the spear right in the face.
The upcoming moment when Ed confronts Truth for the final time is gonna be powerful, Sean.
