Welp, I'm sold. I had no idea that this game was so ambitious. As for the animations, I think I'll be good considering that I can do so much in a game that pretty much looks like a greatest hits of everything I love about fantasy and sci fi all in one game. I'll take options and replayability over looking like a badass casting spells or shooting laser guns. I am just glad that I can actually do both.

  • @kkocicakk

I loved combat in Gothic 1. Once I learned it's principles it was really fun. It was also great to see how the animations and moves became more interesting when you learned new weapon skil levels. If you were succesful in timing, you could do some fluid combos with spins, wide swings, etc. It looked still quite realistic, but had the effectness of game combat. It felt like you really hit your opponents. It was just good.
Once I got to gothic 3, combat was reeealy strange. it didn't have the weight in it. it felt mroe like waving something in front of you, definitelly not a weapon.
Risen 1 was great again. It had the combo potencial, it had the weight of a weapon, a few different weapon types with different feels to them. It was great again.
Then Risen 2 came and... it was awful. those fast enemy attacks taht you didn't have a chance to properly react, thsoe 3 animations over and over again, only one handed ugly swords, soem of them big like a paddle, that free camera. It was just soo big step back. RIsen 3 was quite simmilar, even though felt much better mainly by adding some different weapons, or rather, magic. Those casting moves were quite funny, but felt like you actually do something. It felt logical that you have to give some effort in your spells, not like this air fisting we see in ELEX. Still it wan's great, first Risen is still better, but it was some improvement.
ELEX seems mroe wooden, more simple. Is's not Gothic 3's fiddling in the air, but it's not that great either. Worst is of course that magic animation, but I have some hopes for them to give us more casting animations. The rest is quite ok, but is still missing something, not quite sure what. But I am really interested in what will they come up for the different spells. Risen 3 being quite strange and traditional but still interesting with thsoe crystal like forms of those spells, this could be interesting. So far everything seems like some smoke, poison or fire, which is not exactly what I want. I would like something more like ice block, ice spear, fire ball, etc. like in their old games where we could see the projectiles sort of. I guess this is not all the magic there is, that we will get something like that, but it's strange to see only this sort of smoke type of magic.

I just wanna thank you for this 4 part series regarding Elex and talking about Gothic/Risen series from PB.
I've loved these games since the first Gothic and I can say without any shadow of a doubt that I enjoyed each and every one of them (Gothic II being my favorite of the bunch and it's the game that has helped me cope with keeping my brain busy for 8 times in a row after having an accident).
I've recently replayed (started a few months ago) Gothic 1-3 and Risen 1-3 to get ready for Elex and to my surprise I've grown to love them even more (playing through the Gothic games gave me a nostalgia feeling like no other).
Now when we're talking combat although you can't expect Dark Souls combat I've never minded the combat in any of the games (although Risen 2-3 combat system were pretty basic compared to the other games).
With that said..Elex is by far my most anticipated game this year and I cannot wait to dive into another Piranha Bytes game head on.

I guess I'm alone in this but the combat in PB games doesn't feel satisfying to me, it feels cheap. You have to learn how to game the game essentially, and it feels like I'm exploiting a broken combat system rather than winming through my own skill.
The reason why combat in dark souls or the witcher 3 feels so satisfying is because if I lose I can tell exactly what went wrong. And by that I mean intuitively. In games like the risen series, or gothic series I feel like I have to go through quite a few deaths before I realise what the problem is (usually It's very poorly telegraphed animations from enemies, or not knowing which frames of animation the enemy is invulnerable for, even though logically they should be either just as vulnerable or invulnerable from one frame to the next when they have their shield down).
And lastly, I got through gothic 1 and 2 and it was charming. I got through Risen 1 and it was unsatisfying to fight. There was no joy, the only reason to look forward to a fight was for whatever loot I got. The fight itself was repetitive and combat had no kick to it. And Elex looks visually more impressive, but animation is still on par with Risen 1 almost. It looks like combat is exploitable, it looks like It's one of the few departments they cheaped out on and honestly I've seen animation done by hand that's a lot better. Mo-cap is not required to get great animation. The weird thing is for Elex there's this major disconnect for me. The better the models and textures are the more jarring the bad animation is. If PB came out with a game that had lower quality art, but the same animations, I'd swallow it much better.
And I swear I am getting so sick of that run animation where the shoulders of the character just bob up and down slightly but barely move front to back with the arm swing, so unnaturally, just like the gothic series and the risen series to follow it.
Sorry for the rant. I really want to enjoy this game, I honestly do. Gothic 1 and 2 are such good memories for me and I want Piranha Bites to do incredibly well, but I honestly doubt they will hit it big with this game...

This is an EXCELLENT, extremely well-thought-through post that I'll respond to later when I have time. And I'm sure you're far from alone in believing the combat in ELEX is... concerning. Even I'm worried but thankfully, there's a lot more to PB games than combat.

    • @Kirgoss
      @Kirgoss 7 лет назад +7

I can very much relate to that. Personally I liked the combat in Gothic 1 and especially Gothic 2. To me the fights in this games were satisfying. Risen 1 was ok as well. Now I really dislike the combat in the other games, like recently Risen 3, mainly the melee combat. I mean, I know how it works, I can fight (not like that certain Joe). It just feels cheap and boring, really.
Animations in general are another thing, I also feel like the animations seem just worse and worse the better the models are, but at least here I can say I can live with that. The combat though? It is one of the reasons why I never finished Risen 3.... (although I still plan to at some point)

you literally expressed my thoughts, I've never played through the gothic series, but I did play the Risen series and I really did enjoy them, story wise, but just as you've explained, the animations were quite horrible to say the least, but then again, so were the graphics, and it didn't even remotely bother me just due to how outdated the art design and graphics were, but in ELEX, the game looks really modern, yet with a really cheap animation design, which is quite sad, I personally would've preferred outdated graphics with better animations myself

To be perfectly honest, my perfect game would be an unholy fusion of the Souls games(level design, atmosphere), the Drakengard/Nier(music, story set up, the fact that everything and everyone is screwed up in some way, the existence of a final boss that plays in a completely different style from the normal gameplay. Drakengard players know what I am talking about ) series, and the Gothic/Risen series(open worldness, RPG style).

  • @SomethingEls

I agree with what you say here quite a lot (and also played everything I could made by PB).
If the combat system will be good it won't hinder my enjoyment, good animations or not however seeing your character and enemies respond to what you want to do in the way you'd expect is very satisfying. That's to answer your question about animations.
As for myself I'm eager to see the writing in the game. PB proves they can do superb writing as well as crappy. That's the part I'm most curious about. That's not to say I don't want to do everything in my power to cleanse the world of all creatures with HP bar, because I definitely do.
That was a nice vid, hope I'll stumble on more of your content in the future

I loved Gothic 1 and 2 for the story and how often I was able to replay the game without feeling bored. How the same NPC either absolutely loved you or hated you depending what fraction you joined / decision you made in your playthrough. Unlike some AAA games, you were not punished to do something morally wrong. That's really what I look forward to the most in Elex. I probably play a melee/archer guy on my first playthrough because the combat system seems to be the most satisfying for all piranha bite games. Might try mage if they implement actual mage casting animations and not "my arm is a gun wuhahaha"

Loved your video, you spoke with such passion about PB titles (I have yet to play any, but I am looking at Elex with reserved enthusiasm). My opinion on animations goes something like this: While I do agree that if the game/combat is otherwise solid, then the animations arent quite as important. However, at the same times I think there are some key reasons why to many they are still a very big deal. RPGs probably more than any other game are meant to be completely immersive, and especially for me, if I cant roleplay my character in the game (feel as though that really is me in that world doing all that cool stuff) it creates a separation for me, and ultimately affects my gameplay and choices (no way in hell I would murder an innocent person for a piece of loot in a game like fallout or skyrim or any game with a custom player character and the ability to roleplay well), but in other games where you may play as a predetermined character, I would definitely murder or steal bc thats not me in the game. Its the same kind of with animations, I cant imagine myself being a bad ass monster/demon/man slaying beast with animations that look like I just awoke from a prolonged vegetative state and my motor skills havent fully recovered yet. It just looks silly. Even in games like Dark Souls 3 (the way you hold a light sword in both hands is just straight up embarrassing, and I literally never twohand short swords or similar weapons solely for that reason. This was incredibly long sorry lol.

The combat is actually is one of the aspect that looks improved alot since alpha footage.
It looked AWFUL in the 2016 or earlier footage.
Now it looks more like risen 1 melee wise, though i shame their decision making dodge roll back instead of sidestep.
I do tolerate the jank and if it id well done like gothic 2 or risen. It actually make a good gameplay.
Your videos actually makes me starting to have faith again after risen 2 and 3.
I just hope thr game has decent combat, but the complex world and faction system from gothic and risen 1. Risen 2 was the worst and risen 3 tried to brought this back to a degree, but the world design just isnt up to the standard.
    I hope elex will deliver

REALLY nice video! And good points you make all along!
But concerning the animation quality: It makes it feel COOL. And thats what I'm looking for. After I got 500+ hours in Dark Souls PvP, much of it Dark Souls 3 gank spanks the combat won't be challenging, the fun of the game will be in other things. An RPG like ELEX is for me all about the atmosphere and the style.

Being a Gothic and Risen fan, I want to like Elex, but... IMHO it looks like PB has stagnated. The game looks like a crazy quilt of a bunch of previously unused assets thrown together without any unifying art direction... and the gameplay looks equally uninspired. Contrary to many, I felt that Risen 3 was PB on the verge of greatness again -- just short of an amazing looking world and wonderful combat system -- but even though Elex looks bigger and packed with more ideas, it sadly "feels" like a step backwards. I hope I'm wrong, but the more I see, the less I want to play the game.

    • @ShatteredEquilibrium

Indeed, they aren't progressing at all, if anything, these animations are a step backwards, as is world design - shotguns, chainsaw swords, grenades, fireballs, dinosaurs... it IS possible to blend these together, but here it's not done well enough, it all seems like a mix of random art assets from different genres. And with only weeks before the final release, there's no hope for any major improvements.

Honestly, as much as I might love Gothic 1 and 2 as well as the first Risen, PB really dropped the ball with the Risen followups. They need to step up their game. Particularly in the combat area. I'm a little more optimistic about Elex but the combat still looks pretty bad.

I'm not too familiar with PB games (or most RPG's) but what I've noticed is in a lot of different games with fluid combat animations (Shadow of Mordor, Assassin's Creed, etc.) You never have ACTUAL control over who you attack, and you can often end up attacking the wrong person (my reason for deleting SoM twice). I would like a balance between control and fluidity

Nice Video(s)! Ever thought about to reach out for Björn Pankratz for an interview? (The bald one in the videos...) Currently he is on promotion tour, so very likely he does have a full schedule atm. but after Elex Release, just ask him! Chances are high that you can add a nice final video with an inteview with the head of development... at least worth a try!

Hello, i just want to let you know that the game version you can see in writing bulls video you showd for a short time is the at the time of the recording current working version of the game so the version with wich the devs work at the moment or the latest actuall state of the game. :)
At least Jenny said that to writing bull during one of the videos.
i wrote so many different versoins of that because my englisch is not so good and i want the message of my post to be as clear as possible. :)

I'm waiting for the day where there will be a ultra realistic physics RPG. Would be nice to shoot a monsters leg and watch the reaction, damage, effect after etc. Come across a rock monster and pistols are made redundant it hurts it but it tickles some damage off it in the shot area because it would realistically chip away. Would be nice, maybe another 10 years down the track.

seriously, it's 2017. Holding on to an outdated combat system out of nostalgia or for the sake of 'tradition' is such a backwards mindset. If PB actually made proper work of it, these games would be all the more appealing. Instead, a decade later, we still clumsy 3 to 5 hit combos that end up abusing the wonky animation system to get infinite stun loops ...

You have to expect combat to be like that in a true rpg. Perfect example I got into the elder scrolls when Oblivion came out. Around the same time I was playing Oblivion, Dark Messiah came out and I got that came because the combat was at the time to me amazing. But really DM was an action game with RPG elements. I never completed the game lost interest and went back to The Elder Scrolls and never looked back. Now games ever evolving so combat is getting better in modern rpgs but there is always going to be that balancing act between rpg and action elements. You can't have it all.

I was looking forward to getting this game. But I have to thank you in some way because this video is a nice middle ground. I played Gothic 1 and I was impress with the scope of the game. But I can't say i enjoyed the gameplay which to me is the core of any game. I was one of those that actually didn't enjoy the witcher 3. While the story telling is Triple A. I find the combat in the game far to fancy. WorthAbuy had the same feeling about the combat in Witcher 3. So seeing the games limited combat and the fact they want me to pay 60 bucks for it. Is something I just don't see happening. Everything else does peak my interest, But combat is just to important to just dismiss when the whole game is about leveling up.

Maybe it's just me but I feel like they are trying to add everything into the game without actually trying to refine said additions, saying that maybe it might all blend together into a functional if janky system (being realistic about their Budget of course) shame the Guns have little impact even if the magic looks pretty effective (that animation though).

"Without a doubt the most criticized element of every PB game is the combat"
Pretty sure it's a false statement. First of all: the combat in both G1 and G2 were good, and the combat in Risen was very good. Dunno who thinks otherwise, but they're very, very wrong.

    • @warmlycalculated390

I love the combat in G2 and Risen! But, at least in my experience, their combat systems were under a lot of criticism, mostly from idiots... but idiots are also the loudest.

I must say a lot of people I met said that combat in first two Gothic games was awful. I disagree, but I can't do anything with their distaste.
On the contrary, third Gothic has some weird combat. one animation forever. Or the three animation repetetiveness of Risen 2.
You could still enjoy that rubbery combat of Gothic 3, but you must admit, it wasn't that great. It still felt good to decimate entire cities of orcs even with that click click click click combat system.

So, you need trainers to learn skills/abilities. Is it possible to mix styles from different factions? Let's say I want my character to be traditional mage + technical swords. Since both seem to be in the opposite spectrum (Berserker for magic, Tech stuff for Clerics/Albs), would that be possible? What if besides that, my faction is actually the remaining one (Outlaws)? In other words, I wonder how restricted your skills/equipment become, the moment you join a Faction.

    • @jackkra5847
      @jackkra5847 7 лет назад +1

probably not. their games usually have base set of skills from all fields that you can learn at any time and from any faction, but high end skills are faction only. and usually you have beat trough few hours with mele, just to learn magic. (only game where mage has to start as swordman in order to stay alive)
usually you can use any armor or weapon, but you aim and dmg will be lower without right skills and good stat base. also in some titles it's impossible to get high end armor from other faction.
how i see it magic will be berserkers only, drones and force shield for cleric and heavy weapon for outlaws. but there might be consumables like scrolls for magic that anyone can use.

Good ol Angry Joe... I just hope he stays away from Elex, since clearly he does not enjoy the PB style of action rpgs. He is just going to shit talk the game because he sucks at combat, and that is going to negatively affect the sales of the game.
Oh, and great video btw. The combat animations are probably going to suck, but it won't be a huge deal for me. If it uses the same engine as Risen 3, I wonder how hard it would be to mod the crystal glove animations in?
