@@zanderjarrell7429 Have you considered NOT running past every enemy in an attempt to turn the game into a boss rush simulator? I'm sorry, but I find it strange that people complain about the fact that you can't run past enemies... No shit. That's why the enemies were out there, have movesets, drop souls and weapons, TO BE FOUGHT. Seriously, Dark Souls 2 is actually a lot easier if you just take your time to fight enemies, it even has a mechanic to make areas/run backs easier if you just kill the enemies 12 times. Don't like having to fight enemies? Bite the bullet and run through the area 12 times, use the surplus of souls to level up, then boom, suddenly the game is a lot easier, and the next area will be easier after that. That's how I played Dark Souls 2 SotFS as my first souls game years and years ago. Mind you, it was a rental, and I never completed it, as I completed DS3 and DS1, as well as Bloodborne before I came back to it to finish it off, but that one lesson it taught me, to take my time when walking through areas, it made literally the entire series easier, you just have to learn what the game wants to teach.

I think despite the answer being pretty clear, it does seem like it’d get really tedious having to waste half of the time that should be spent on bosses, on just clearing out enemies that you already know you’re capable of beating.
Like I’d say it’s comparable to showing your work in a math exam, you already know how to do the question, showing your work won’t do anything to the answer itself unless you didn’t understand the question, you’re gonna get the question right if you know the answer, but you’re gonna spend half of your time writing down the working, rather than actually writing down the answer.
And you NEED to write down your work, and you have to spend all that time writing down stuff you already know, before you can finally get to writing down your answer, worst of all this process will repeat for every other question in the Exam, so you’re gonna be writing down a LOT of numbers.

No , most people clear areas and explore them some more some less 1 time but once they reach the boss that is their priority then and if they die they don't want to clear hordes of enemies every time to reach the boss again , that is the most annoying part of DS2 with some of it's runbacks , that it forces you to waste time on mob clearing when you don't want to keep doing it over and over again , you just want to fight the boss . @@blabla-fw9ix I'm gonna reiterate what the other guy said, and also point out that you have no right to say that "some areas were purposely designed to pi$$ you off", you are no developer, and you don't get to say that just because you found them annoying. The iron keep is a great area, i can't be sure but the fact that fog walls don't give s at the start is probably to encourage player skill, to develop ways to lead around enemies.
And that's what i did. Smelter runback was easier in vanilla, but in scholar you can just jump where the dull ember would be in vanilla, and nobody will be able to stop you from running to the fog wall. No one.
Not only that, but there isn't a single runback where skill doesn't solve the "issue" of s on fog walls.
"There is a reason why DS2 is the only game that has this system and why it wasn't carried over to newer titles , because it wasn't ,, fun ," There is a reason and you certainly can't know what it is, nor can i, so stop claiming you do, unless you want to show your dark souls 2/3/bloodborne developer badge.
"Bosses are much more enjoyable even if more difficult if you have to focus only on them"
I agree, but it also doesn't mean anything because thinking "Oh no, i have to run through the area and i might be caught at the fog wall" signals a skill issue and an attitude issue, not a game issue. Bosses and their areas are always separate, and you lumping them together doesn't make you look like someone who knows how to deal with that, because if you did, you wouldn't say that s on doors are an issue, but a minor annoyance at times, which is what they are if you know all the tricks.
Frigid outskirts only bothers me in the sense that it could have been much more fun, not that it's shit like many others think. Imagine if it was the same, but warmth, the most illuminating spell in the game after cast light, or other pyromancies, were able to reveal a bit of the area around it because it's fire vs ice. Imagine if there were more markings to tell you the straightest line (you can still go straight towards the bridge but you can easily turn a bit wrong when you dodge the reindeer, this is pure skill and memorisation, i never bothered to learn it though) , those reindeer gave fucking amazing loot and i spent ages farming them for it.
Fun fact, people hate that area because they gave up figuring it out and thinking about it as a test of patience and running. But, if you think a bit, you should get that they also despawn, meaning you can farm them for their items and despawn them forever much faster than if there was a bonfire, making the entire area trivial.

I have an overarching theory as to why some people somehow become blind and forget how to play souls games whenever they play DS2: DS2 derangement syndrome. DS2 is actually both very fun and very fair if you understand what the game is trying to do. When people approach DS2 from the perspective that it's a game full of cheap deaths and difficulty for the sake of difficulty, they start to zone out and ignore the tools and hints that the game's giving them. And when that happens, they start to die a lot, which only makes them more convinced that DS2 is unfair, so they start to zone out even more, which makes them die even more, and so on and so forth as the spiral of malding continues.
It's not entirely unlike someone playing an RTS that they think is actually a bad action game. And then getting increasingly frustrated and less strategic as they repeatedly die over and over again.

Feeble King is obsessed with this idea of an "intended way to play" to me this just indicates the deeply flawed mindset of many who think just like him. The intended way to play was to be patient and learn from mistakes. That's pretty much it. With this open approach to difficulty Fromsoftware managed to make games that you can overcome by just trying to play the game in the way you want to, all the while making them fun and difficult. It's the case for every game souls game From makes.
If in Dark Souls you can't see a ranged enemy in the distance because you locked on to the enemies rushing at you a typical player would unlock the camera and keep the ranged enemy in view while dealing with the melee opponents. It is seriously extremely intuitive as preventing yourself from being surrounded is what you would try do in real life.
I still can't understand why people praise the "slow and methodical" while also complaining that DS2 just sends endless enemies after you if... you aggro every enemy you can find without killing them then proceed to run past them only to be swarmed? The same thing would happen in most videogames not even just souls games. This just makes no sense to me.
These people seem to lack a fundamental understanding of how to learn from game design and consider how to solve a puzzle presented to you. I feel like these people think they should be good at these games without investing the time and energy to actually to become actually skilled.
Also, trial and error as well as difficulty are fundamental to how Fromstofware makes their games. Literally every game I can think of Involves some sort of trial and error to learning gameplay. Trial and error is fundamental to learning in general, so too is failure. It's not bad game design nor is it unintuitive.

Seen it around the time it came out, because it was aggressively recommended to me by youtube, concluded that it's all just a massive skill issue even without being a professional ds2 defender and never watched another ds2 hit piece ever again. I've already learned what's behind ds2 hate: running past enemies and skill issues.

I mean.. People can have their opinions on it. They may not articulate themselves well or over exaggerate their points but their thoughts on it are still valid as much as the next person. A matter of fact is a large amount of people feel negatively about the game. I personally beat it over a dozen times and even I will not recommend it to others despite enjoying it.
Demeaning and overlooking other's experience with it instead of trying to truly understand or breaking down why they felt that way is just not a good thing to do.
Domo3000 is just as bad by cherry picking examples and demeaning people. Look at the example at 8:38. Torches are a limited resource and he's using them in a well lit area, the caves in that zone are also fairly small so it's unlikely that first timers are going to use a torch throughout the entire level. Yes the archer would be easily missed, yes people may not hear the enemies dropping down due to running by, talking/other noises or they changed the audio settings. Notice how he dodged into the archer's line of sight first before finishing the thief. Even for people who noticed the thief It's also unlikely for them to take those very specific set of actions.
10:45 "Its just so embarrassing watching him complain about issues that are solely based on his lack of skills" Domo3000 is not a good person and he's abusing his knowledge of the game to belittle others. I would have loved to see his first organic play through because chances are he got frustrated at the game too. Right now he's going through a weird obsession with defending DS2 and attacking other people. I fought Malenia hundreds of times and can consistently beat her but I'm not going to say she's easy since most people I've helped lost to her. I'm also not going to use my experience to belittle others.
Other cherry picked examples. 2:15 multiple enemies aggroing at once but he's well equipped enough to one shot, shortly after he's herding the enemies to the droppable platforms which aren't easy to see. Shrine of Ammana is funny since it has a large abundance of enemies, the water slows you down, enemies hide in the water, the cliffside is hard to spot and the mage's projectiles are notorious for ignoring the wall and hitting you behind cover. 4:23 no one's going to realistically trigger that specific set of actions to deal with all the enemies. 6:30 you don't get artorias' swords at that point in the game, the ghost enemies are also worse in the previous example if you include the foggy forest. "he also seems to think archers are actively hidden just because he never pays any attention to his surroundings." Domo300 says in an area where an archer is actively hidden... The iron keep example with the turtle and the pull level is also dubious since it's unlikely that you'll notice the knight jumping down after you especially after doing some attacks near it but not drawing aggro yet. Lots of people would also likely get stuck on the other side of the blade with the turtle instead of leading it perfectly into the blade. 16:19 look at how well the archer blends in, also notice how he convenient stood at a spot where no one else is being aggro. Lower garrison section is sad, Domo is saying other people aren't qualified to talk about it and later says the fight is more fun for people who "actually played the game" which the person did... so did Domo.... the fight itself looks drawn out and boring. "All I'm hearing is the game is bad because you have to fight your way through all the enemies once to get to the bondfire" OR the person is trying to articulate that forced encounters through the use of choke points and enemies literally blocking your path isn't fun. Personally having the ability to skip annoying or boring enemies would make the experience more enjoyable. Domo3000 is purposefully straw manning the arguments when he doesn't agree with them, there's also MANY reasons that the person thinks the game is bad not just the one which Domo3000 worded it as. For Brume Tower it's unlikely for people to take those specific set of action to lead enemies into the bombs and have them blow up on themselves, No Man's Wharf is also a bad cherry picked example, most people don't use torches, he's also stopping at the perfect spots to draw some enemies in waiting many seconds to fight them and then going into the next set of enemies which newer players aren't going to stop at the perfect spot.

@nadaburner People can have their opinions, but that's not what's happening here. They're trying to state _facts_ in their videos when they use the word "objectively." That's why they are using video footage as _proof_ no matter how contrived or dishonest their footage may be. They can also be disingenuous with their "facts" they're trying to state. Articulation is completely beside the point as that goes into arguing semantics.
You're trying to be middle of the road or an apologist about this topic on DS2 critics, but as usual, it's not bringing anything new to the table of discussion. The "enlighten" DS2 bashers go out of their way to brush off experiences or even entertain the idea that maybe they're not even trying to meet the game on its own terms that it sets through the mechanics, the explanation of said mechanics and conditioning through its gameplay. There's a false equivalency that people with your position fail to accept: DS2 bashers go out their way to state as a definitive fact that DS2 has no redeeming qualities, and it a bad game. DS2 defenders can and do acknowledge DS2 has technical faults and some design issues with enemy movement and level layout, but also it has a lot of progressive mechanics that then went on to influence future games of the series and doesn't get its praises for those contributions.
People like Mauler, Mathew and this Feeble King created an arbitrary standard to hold against DS2 whe games both before and after are guilty of some of the things too, but sgrug it off as "oh it's suppose to be gokng forward, not backwards" when you point to Demon Souls and DS1 or they say "oh well it's more refine and not so bad" when pointing to Bloodborne, DS3 or Elden Ring. I stand by my comments that DS2 has given rise to vapid criticisms because their criticisms were never made in good faith.

    • @nadaburner

@@D-Havoc The main issue with reoccurring "problems" is execution. Runbacks are disliked by many people in every game and the way it was done in Ds2 is the most apparent in the series when it comes to frustration. I don't think it's arbitrary when people use the frigid outskirts, Sir Alonne and Blue Smelter Demon's runbacks as some of the worst in the series. Add on the other problems and the frustration shoots through the roof despite other games having the same issues. User experience matters and I don't think all complaints are arbitrary because of that.
Complaints are not "vapid" they offer the devs time on future projects to find solutions, now look at Elden Ring, stakes of Marika are near most bosses so runbacks are significantly less tedious. Saying something is objective when it's not is bad on the DS2 bashers' side and so is disingenuous clips to "prove" a point as you wrote but Domo3000 does the same thing. He even goes beyond to insult and belittle others which should not even appear in a video about correcting them. The title alone shoes everyone that this video was made with ill intent instead of just correcting people.
"There's a false equivalency that people with your position fail to accept: DS2 bashers go out their way to state as a definitive fact that DS2 has no redeeming qualities, and it a bad game. DS2 defenders can and do acknowledge DS2 has technical faults and some design issues with enemy movement and level layout, but also it has a lot of progressive mechanics that then went on to influence future games of the series and doesn't get its praises for those contributions."
^You can't be generalizing people like that. not all bashers hate all of Ds2. Ds2 did try new and old things, whether or not it was well received depends on the person and their experience, lots of people just so happens to remember parts they feel overly negative about and not focus on the good. Ds2 definitely could have done things better like conditioning users or trying to get them to use certain mechanics more often even if it's not needed. The other games share the same problems as a good amount of people don't learn about mechanics until someone else tells them long after their first playthrough. Not all Ds2 defenders acknowledge the issues it has either. I've seen some people state that it's a perfect game. It for sure gets praised for its contributions too. Power stancing was my favorite mechanic and sadly it wasn't in Ds3 outside of paired weapons. Now it's in Elden Ring and I appreciated ds2 for that, I also thoroughly enjoyed the build variety and ability to apply affinities to weapons that already have non-physical damage, ER brought some into the dlc in a very limited manor sadly and can't also have a weapon buff. Not all issues are overall bad either, Falcon knights and their broken walking animations in Ds2 was genuinely funny to me despite being a literal flaw with the game.
I have not seen Mathew's video on the game so I can't comment on them but I have some of Mauler's and while he did misuse "objective" a lot I still think certain (not all) points he made are still fair criticisms or complaints. Feeble King's video I've only seen the clips from this video so I can't comment on anything else. For the most part it was mainly subjective. A tiny amount of research shows the original video is 57 minutes long and a follow-up video was made where Feeble King claims to have killed all enemies (I haven't seen them) so I imagine Domo3000 cherry picked their bad examples and then proceeded to also make disingenuous counter clips to prove his point. Two wrongs don't make a right in my opinion so both sides handled the overall discussion poorly based on what I've seen in this video.

The paradox is that players like Feeble King hate Dark Souls 2, because it is the Souls game with the best level design. In my opinion it was never intended by the developers that players either do a speedrun through the level to the next bonfire, nor to kill all enemies on the path. But to develop one's own strategy to traverse a level with the enemy placement and the environment given. And no other Souls game than DS2 offers so many options for the player to deal with the enemies in the levels. I think of things like: 1) the tilting platforms in Iron Keep (demonstrated in the video), 2) the spikes in Brightstone Cove Tseldora which are very useful to kill all the spiders 3) using a light source in No-Man's Wharf to repel the Darkdwellers and many more examples like this.
Blaming DS2 for being too difficult in its level design while not engaging with the level at all (but trying to speedrun through it) is like swallowing a cookie in one piece without chewing or tasting it and then complaining that the throat hurts.

These people are just grifters who complain with big words about things they don’t understand and don’t care to understand.

No, I was the same exact way. I locked on for just about everything that allowed lock-on and was fine. Granted, I did my best to keep aware of enemies that weren’t in my focus, but I was totally fine doing it.

The only way I "got good" at Souls games was just by stopping focusing on getting good, and instead focusing on having fun. Sometimes you gotta toil away to grind some souls or runes, but it's kind of up to you to find your way to play, even if it means dying 100 times. You'll get better if you keep trying something different.

  • @thenoobjesus3102

why does he think that running past enemies is an option? why would the devs put enemies into the game that you arent meant to kill? most of the time, an out of reach archer is meant to convey to you that there is an out of reach area that you can actually reach. "there is an archer shooting me from a place i cant seem to reach? damn, i wonder how to get there." which makes you look around and explore. the game wants you to kill everything atleast once. why does he simply assume the intentions of the devs? this seems to be a common thing with all of these critiques. none of these critiques actually look at interviews or anything, they just assume everything. out of all the critiques, this one might be the worst one in my opinion.

Maybe DS1 being so lenient with its enemy placements is part of it. It's quite easy to run through most of that game, plus s during actions reinforces that behaviour

In many cases running past them is a valid option, you are taking a risk but if you have the ability you are able to skip a lot of mobs. The issue is that these people can't figure how to kite them properly so it must be the game's fault.
Ironically they kite them perfectly when they want to stage footage about how "all the mobs are ganking me at the same time WAAAHH!"...

Just because the game allows you to stop and grind for levels and weapon/material drops doesn't mean that the process of doing so isn't tedious and boring, it just makes the game less fun. Sure he could have spent more ten hours farming soul levels and getting his weapon upgraded to +15 so that the game deems his arbitrary numbers acceptable enough to progress but he also could spend those ten hours playing a better game. JRPG developers have never been able to understand this concept which is why WRPGs will always be superior.

I'm a blind woman, I could not beat Dark Souls one and three without a friend sitting with me. In Dark Souls two, that same friend helped me find the ring of whispers and told me about Gower's ring later. I put on headphones and beat this game as a dexterity tank with a curved greatsword.
I know this is anecdotal evidence, but these people are worse at this game than a blind girl.

My only guess is that it’s not total blindness? ‘Blindness’ actually refers to a whole range of lack of sight. Some can see only in narrow sections or dead center, or the like, and some can technically ‘see’ at all angles, but with such awful clarity that it’s similarly restrictive. Just a guess though. She could be totally blind! Either way, it’s super cool she found a way to enjoy the game!

@@Domo3000 I actually kept a spear in my offhand to find walls and prism stones if I thought I heard a gap coming up, the Forest of Fallen Giants is a great example with the salamander pit's fire jets. When fighting bosses I spammed backsteps or turtled up behind a shield until I found Gower's ring, then I did an about face whenever I heard a noise and kept repair powder in my hot bar.
If you've never played with the ring of whispers, I highly recommend doing so; it might help a sighted person appreciate the design of the enemies better. -I didn't even realize the Ogres behind the doors were meant to be a trap for unnatentive players until I found your videos, I just heard them-

This is the ultimate moment for me. This singlehandedly proves that these RUclipsr DS2 haters are just disingenuous. That they're not making arguments in good faith.
I think there are very good arguments out there that people can use to explain why they didn't like DS2. But these hater RUclipsrs are so caught up in being "objectively correct" that they have to invent all kinds of non-existent problems to make the game look bad.
