Michum overshadows anyone in a room, without a word said. At the same time > He doesn't have to move alot or anything just speak his lines & he does that with ease & perfect timing. 👌 ❤ When one has the " It " factor they have it. Nothing to learn ... It's just there.

Oh, I think Hitler and especially Churchill outshine Tug's taciturn demeanor, just as it should.
His dismissal of the likelihood that Germany will declare war on the United States over the destroyers sets off Churchill's candid remark that it's not something than can be HOPED for is very well done on both sides.
Of course, Germany did declare war on the United States in the wake of the Pearl Harbor attack.

Despite his status in this series, Robert mitchum doesn't have his usual obnoxious swagger. His acting is pleasantly understated, also. Ali Mc Graw must be the worst actress they could have chosen---she was also too old for the boyish Byron and the part, in total. Herman Wouk did the screenplay. Would he have created such a classless, superficial airhead like Rhoda for a naval officer's wife? Maybe. Very well done, otherwise.

Prior to the development of long range fighters, bombing Germany was one of the most dangerous duties of the war. The British mortality rate per mission was 4%, which translates to 70% across the standard tour of thirty missions. Once the United States entered the war, American bombers flew the even more dangerous daytime missions. The mortality rate across a standard tour of twenty-five daytime missions was over 100%, meaning that surviving a tour was a fluke. Their valor was unmatched.

I also loved Victor “Pug” Henry though I had to suspend utter reality because when the story starts Commander Victor Henry had been a Naval Officer since 1915 when he graduated from Annapolis, he was 46 years old, Rhoda his wife was 43 in the book and a trophy wife. Robert Mitchum was 66 years old when the Mini series was made and though he was fit he looked over 60. Mandatory retirement for the military is 64 and that’s for Flag Officers. They needed a big name for the production, Paul Newman was interested in the part he would have looked the part, (he was in his mid 50s at the time) but Mitchum is a great actor, he really looked old 5 years later when they filmed “War & Remembrance.”
