- There are a few methods you can use to transfer your iOS (Apple) photos, videos and multimedia to a Windows PC. In this week's Tech Tip, we use a USB cable to transfer your photos and videos from an iOS device to a Microsoft Windows computer. Remember to buy or have a USB cable that allows for a data transfer.

IMPORTANT... See Sabri Iseni's response buried below... If the photo transfer doesn't complete, with a "this device is unreachable" error message.. Go to Settings>Photos>TRANSFER TO MAC OR PC and change from Automatic to Keep Originals. (I believe "Automatic" may be the default after a iPhone Reset.) The "Automatic" setting also stops photo transfers using the iCloud and Microsoft Photos photo/video transfer approachs described elsewhere. Note I went through 3 layers of Apple Tech support before someone there provided this solution to this very frustrating problem! There are also hundreds of questions about this on the Apple Community site.

Thank you! The wifi on my iphone broke, it wasn't discoveable when plugging it in and apparently my icloud was not working either. I had no way to get my 12,000+ pictures off of my phone. Hi MJ, just wondering when you connected the "non" IPhone cable could you see the I pone on your PC but nothing showed in the folder, this is what im seeing now and I dont have an original i phone charging cable USB A only USB C and it windows im running. is there another solution to this

This would all be helpful if and when it works, i connect my usb to my laptop and I don't get that white box that says allow this device to access photos come up at all, nothing comes up.
Are you getting a system sound when you connect the device? The USB cable you are using could just be a charge cable and not a data/charge cable.

Thank you So Much! After 3 days trying to find other apps to transfer over Wi-fi and then download dropbox ( which video file just sat there looking like it was uploading). This is Amazing! I connected my phone to my computer and for some reason it didn't show up in the devices and drivers. What can I do?
You may need to try a different cable. Some cables only support charge ability.

The photos did transfer, but most of them are in HEIC format, not JPG. I can't open them. What happened and what to do?
High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIC) is just a format type for files.
This format is from Apple and not compatible with Windows.
You can install the windows extension to convert those by visiting the link below.

What happens if your iPhone’s icon on the PC does show and DCIM folder is empty but the photos are still in my phone?
They could be under a different album. You would need to figure out where,then follow the path on the computer.
Not all of the pictures on my phone are transferring. Only about 500 of 1600 are transferring. How can I fix that? Thanks.

I use this method however I noticed that the iPhone photos don’t show up in chronological order and it’s harder for me to organize. I want to be able to copy certain albums from the iPhone and transfer them but instead I’m stuck with them being scattered and having to organize them again on my computer
You should be able to organize by date.

When I copy and paste, why some folders had “Error coping file or folder” - The device is unreadable.
Make sure the device doesn't lock or timeout.
when i click apple ipohne, the folder is empty. it doesnt show internal storage. Have tried with multiple wires

Hi, Thank you for your video. I wonder if you may have the answer on how to move the images from the PC laptop to an iPhone or iPad. I thought I would just reverse process but I kept getting a red circle with a bar through it. After multiple attempts, have been looking here. My Microsoft devices no longer are protected so I don’t want to take them on-line to transfer images. Can you help?
The process works in reverse. Double check your steps. Also if the iPhone has a lock on it (i.e. Pin Code, Password), you will need to have it unlocked.

I have iPhone 11 max pro and I cannot access photos just on my phone, they have to be downloaded to the phone. Is there a way to get multiple photos done at once?
You can use SHIFT or CTRL to select multiples to transfer.
I’ve watched a few videos on how to transfer the data from the iPhone to laptop, and most of them mentioned we need iTunes to be able to transfer data from the iPhone... Do I really need to download iTunes in order to transfer the data??? Thank you for the video!

I’m a pensioner so struggling with all this stuff but Ive watched you before here in the UK & I can understand you. I want to transfer some photos from my iPad to my new PC. Can I transfer only the ones I want, or do they all get transferred over?
You can select as many or as little as you want!
@@HelpCloud so sorry to bother you again. I’ve managed to connect my iPad to my pc & find the Apple folder with all my photos/videos. The only problem is I can’t select the individual photos. At the top right it says: select all, select none, select invert. There is “ select” underneath these options but it’s not responding when I click/hover over it! Any ideas please?

What if I want to worry about the file structure now? I can easily use the Windows import tool to upload photos from my DSLR SDRAM chip to the PC, and it will automatically create folders for each day and file the photos for that day in that folder. However, when I try the same thing with my iPhone 8, nothing works. The import fails, I get duplicate files, files are put in the wrong day's folder, etc. I have to spend hours double checking everything, and almost deleting the photos on my phone one by one to make sure I have all of them on the PC before deleting them on the iPhone.
I have an iPhone XR. It use to be so easy for me to transfer videos and pictures to my PC but with the latest IOS updates, it is nearly impossible. I am trying desperately to transfer my photos and videos to my hard drive. Even if I transfer them one at a time, I am getting messages two error messages. One that is saying "a device attached to the system is not functioning". The other error message I am getting even when I am just trying to open the video from DCIM folder is "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type of might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." I am using an Apple USB cable. I am so frustrated. My phone's storage is at capacity now trying to transfer videos and photos. I have had zero luck trying to transfer for several months. PLEASE HELP!!!

It sounds like you might be trying to open the file while it's still saved to the storage device.
When you try to open it, make sure you do so after you transfer the photos.
It doesn't matter where, as long as its saved somewhere on your PC then it should re-format the file type automatically so you can open it.

But i need to know why when i do this my original photo is duller than the original one. it is very frustrating and how do i fix that?
Windows photo viewer likes to apply an edit for some reason.

Mine comes up with the DCIM things and it has 100 to 105, so five files come up but then only one of them has SOME pictures and videos not all 5??

If you moved them to the PC. It made a copy of them and you would be good to delete off the phone. Just double check to make sure you have copies of the ones you are going to delete.

Is the iPhone unlocked?
I want to move images from my iPhone to Windows 10 in order to clear up storage. Is it safe to use this method and ‘move’ instead of ‘copy’? Or do the images need to be deleted directly from the iPhone to avoid corrupting the iPhone’s file system?
There is no harm in keeping them or deleting them!
However, if you remove them you wont have a backup option for your photos if anything were to happen to them.
It would be a good idea to unplug the device and make sure you can access the files without the phone being connected before you delete them for good.
Keeping them won't cause any issues either, except for taking up your space. Hope it helps!
I did this but it says that it's not functioning. It did copy some photos and was not functioning after. So it stopped copying and when I tried to copy again, it wouldn't let me. What should I do then?

HelpCloud i think so... i was getting the “photos can only import files that are on this device. Cloud-only files are not available” which makes sense but it says that i’ve used 4gb on my iphone icloud space but icloud on the computer says 1 gb. Hey! I encountered a problem while following the same steps. After I started the copying process, in between the process gets interrupted while a message pops up saying that device is not connected. Even though i am not even touching the phone (iphone 11).
Could be a bad cable or it the phone could be timing out and locking on its own.
Worked for a few photos but the transfer ceases to work within a minute which was not long enough to transfer a video file. How can I keep the device working (i-phone)?
Properties show an incomplete installing of the i-phone - mysterious to me. I wasn't "installing" anything - perhaps it means something else, or do I need a driver or the like?
That could be a few things, the transfer shouldn't quit after a minute, so I wonder if your phone is going to sleep.
Make sure your sleep/dim settings are off and check out this link if you're still having problems.

You will have go find out which ones you are looking for.
how do you delete photos from iphone? want to free up storage on iphone.
I'd recommend you turn on iCloud to auto-sync your photos, then they will be saved on the cloud instead of your phone.
If your settings are already set up this way then deleting any of your photos won't actually free up space since they aren't stored on your phone. Here's a link to deleting iPhone photos support.apple.com/en-us/HT205856

When uploading pictures to the computer, do ones from the deleted album on the iPhone appear too, or not?
It wont automatically but you can if you'd like, you would just have to select them yourself
Question on the photo apps other albums section what photo goes into the imports folder I have thousand of photo but that folder it’s always empty I thought that when you import a photo from your iPhone to pc the copies of those photo were transferred to the imports folder but I was wrong
Great question! That is actually not the case, Import and Export are 2 different things.
Import is when you are trying to receive and save files from another device.
It sounds like you're talking about Exporting though, which would be trying to send files to another device.
You would only see files in the Imported folder when you've recently received photos to that device.
It's important to know that isn't where they are stored. This is just another view allowing you to see recent imports to that device.

You can click right click and sort by date.

What if not all of my photos are not all there? there is some but not all of them
Most likely some of your photos were saved to the device and some were saved elsewhere. Make sure you're settings aren't set to only sync online to iCloud photos, which is not the same as the photos being saved to the phone itself. Those are video files and you’ll want to use QuickTime for those!
