Sold both my Samsung 75 inch Q9FN and picked up two Samsung 85 inch Q900b. It's an amazing TV the color volume, brightness, upscaling and the infinity screen makes it incredible. I thought about Oled but they are just to dim but the q900b get so very close to oled black level with eye watering brightness.
Thanks Brian for the regular man's comparison. I played with the Q900B at BB and adjusted the video settings to achieve better contrast, not oled level but close. I have not seen the LG yet but to me, the cost is just too much for the difference.
Dang I missed the Live. I'm almost burned out on OLED and it's dimness. Not burn-in but burned out lol. Might be ready for a big bright mini LED next purchase.
I liked them both and thankfully LG got rid of that ridiculous stand only option but at the end of the day I’d go Samsung. I love the QN90B and I’m sure the 900B would be even better.
All has pros and cons. I´m a OLED Fan because of the quality (and i undterstand everyone who buys an OLED over LED) but i own a QN90A for the piece of mind that i can leave Game HUDs, Subtitles and so on normal bright. And also because i watch Anime. It is really hard to go back to a dimmer full field brightness in HDR. It looks so amazing. If you set the Samsung to the right natural settings it looks very nice. the Dimming on the QN90A has also improved a bit (middle small highlights). Only the discoloration behind dark greyish or colored backgrounds is a problem in Game Mode (easy to see on Witcher 3 in HDR). Blacks are good for LED on the mini led. But it is an LED and never ever match an OLED. If you go in your mind getting an LED with good black levels, you will be fine. Blooming, clouding and so on are there in some challenging scenes. But in most normal scenes, even in darkness, it is good quality for LED
I think eventually people are going to revolt and force them to back off on power limits. It's one thing almost everyone world wide is watching TV and trying to get the brightest best looking one they can afford. As far as black crush I dealt with it with my 65 825 TCL and it didn't really bother me because I don't sit around watching star fields. They later fixed most of the issues in firmware and if I turned local dimming to medium the black crush was gone, just not absolutely inky black anymore. I have the Z9K now as you know and it overall blows away the TCL but yes it has some blooming in certain situations. It looks 3d and super bright with great black levels so that's the tradeoff and I can live with it considering what a beast it becomes with the right context. I think for you if you can deal with the minor issues the Samsung has, plus the price, you should probably get it. I really want Dolby Vision support so Samsung is out for me. You could always take one of the Z9Ks for a spin... 😉 I don't have a 4090k, just a mere 1070gtx that might be able to do 8k,not sure. I'd have to see both in person to really see which one would make me happy but no more toys and way outa my budget.
From my Experience the Samsung Neo QLED shows up more details with Local Dimming in Game Modes! So no need to set it to Low (stop the discoloration for game huds is the only real reason for LD Low imo). It has a bit more blooming instead in Game Mode, but it shows stars and so on a bit brighter. The dark details on the Samsungs are there in Movie / Filmmaker with LD High in HDR, but sometimes the backlight makes it too dark (to hide blooming). So no real black crush.
Yeah the samsung definitely has local dimming enabled in games, as I have the qn900b 85 inch and it does a fantastic job with local dimming in games. And you're right, if you lower the brightness and tune the local dimming for movies, it's easier for the samsung to give you a little more detail in tough scenes.
The QN900B is phenomenal whey it comes to brightness. Will QD OLED bridge that gap. I don’t think 2023 will get to 2000 nits so it may have more detail but Samsungs brightness is blinding.
Nice comparison. To be honest, I think the Samsung was at a significant disadvantage through no fault of your own. It definitely appeared, due to the more upfront positioning of the Samsung, it was exposed to reflections from the front of the store (I’m very familiar with Robert’s store and love he & Wendy). The LG, since it was more recessed and more sheltered from the window, was helped as a result. Window reflections will always reduce perceived contrast. I have neither TV, I do own 3 LG OLEDs, but I’m trying to make a fair assessment. I’ve been hugely impressed with what Samsung has done with the 900B & C. The 8K Sony is a non-starter for me since it doesn’t have the necessary codec for 8K RUclips. BTW, I shoot a lot of 8K, hence my interest in these displays. Keep up the great reviews! It could have been the camera, but I’ve seen some of those same scenes on the 900B that didn’t look clipped as they did in your demo. At times the 900B looked far worse than any other time I’ve seen it. Again, it could have been the camera, the position of the 900B in the store, the settings, or a combination of all three.
Would love to see the 83 A90J vs 83 G2 if possible!!! So many people are salivating for that comparison but for some reason no reviewer wants to compare the two. Very weird if you as me as they are the perfect competition. I'm sure that video would get a huge amount of views as well. I have the 65inch A90J but planning on getting the 85inch Next week, only problem is the G2 is now on my radar as well. Help brother lol. Keep up the great work, your comparisons are awesome.
@@playafly131 A90J for the win. I love Sony’s processor for movie watching. Hard choice though. Sometimes lay in bed at night wondering if I made the right decision lmao
This was such an excellent comparison. You ask what we prefer and IMO, I prefer both. It really depends on the content. Content specific it always will keep me feeling im missing something, so i think if your household has a need for 2 or more TVs you should have 1 of each and watch each device content dependent.
Depends on where I’m putting this tv I’ll choose according, if bright living room it’s Samsung everywhere else bedroom , mancave etc then z2, but if I had to choose only one I might lead slightly to lg z2
12:30 OLED turn up brightness wins...VS Mini-LED Blooming lose detail. --was planning buy samsung 8k, But i see now it fails "white light"(LED best at) in dark environment, what the heck?!
Hey Brian if I had things my way the LG Z2 would be in my house. The infinite contrast alone is enough for me because I watch OLED in a dark or dimly lit room now. Ha ha I don't think I can go back to LED TVs again. Even though I have LED/ miniled TVs I don't watch them nearly as much as my OLED.
The deal breaker for me is $24,999.00 for the LG vs $5,496.00 for the Samsung. Unless you have both sets side by side, 99.9% will never see any difference.
Hi Brian. Thanks very much for the comparison. I currently have a 65" Samsung UA65F9000A which I bought in 2014. It's been great but one of the backlights has started to flicker so I've started looking around for new TV's and I want to get something at least 77" in size. I was planning on getting an LG G3 77" but unfortunately it isn't available where I live. The 77" C3 is available. Shopping around, I have found that the Q900B 85" is the same price as the just released S95C 77". My room has a lot of windows but doesn't have direct sunlight. Do you think the bigger size of the Q900B would outweigh the picture quality of the S95C? I sit around 2.5m (~8ft) from the screen. Since my current TV is almost 10 years old, I'm guessing that any TV I get should be a big step up for me.
I tried a Samsung QN90A last year, and the Mini LED just turned every single light source into a bunch of ugly splotches all over the screen. I'm no LED hater, I had a 2016 Samsung KS8000 QLED for 6 years that I love to death and got an LG C2 this year that I couldn't be happier with due to it's greatly improved reflection, motion and brightness vs last year's CX. I would always tell someone to either pay a little more for an OLED or zero in on a cheaper regular LED that just has at least a 5000:1 native contrast ratio with no blurry viewing angle layer crap, high nits, good color volume and actually does HDR.
With Samsung TV's not having Dolby Vision, does getting a streaming device like the new Apple TV , the Dolby vision on Apple TV will work though the Samsung?
Both look great but it would be oled all day long... 8k sounds great but I'm gonna need 8k bluray... saying that shouldn't 4k bluray look great on an 8k panel...???
