    Very good video, after watching I changed mine! However most of us don’t have a lift at home so I drove mine on ramps. I almost killed myself so I’m here to warn everyone to use wheel chocks and parking brake and maybe jackstands if you use a jack! When I got to the end of reattaching the cable and tightening the bolt to the cable lever, it switched gears manually and the truck slid down the ramp! Yes, I’m lucky not to get crushed, but quite sore now! So DIYer’s be careful!
    Also I bought a used switch/sensor for a BMW off eBay for $99 which is much cheaper, however the wiring is not long enough so I splice the wires at the bottom of the transmission/engine instead of dealing with the plug at the top of the engine. I did not discover the wire was not long enough until the end as well, just hope this little bit of info helps someone looking to do this job a little cheaper, easier, and safer! So far No Transmission Fail Prog thus far! By the way, I’m not a Mechanic at all, just wanted the job done without getting ripped off. So thank you once again!

    For a Uber quick fix leave it installed spray wd-40 into the switch with the extension nozzle, let it dry out a few minutes and try to reset. Worked on mine.

    Connecting the round plug to the engine is difficult to get at. I ended up lying on the engine so can get a hand on each connector. Ensure the engine (RHS) connector fastener is fully anti-clockwise (looking from RHS, 1/4 turn only) and left hand fits in to the metal holder and twist until locks into position. Then offer up the engine connector and twist 1/4 turn clockwise. Pull both ends to ensure is locked. I didn't lock it properly first time and worked loose. With it disconnected the engine will not start (nothing happens when turn key) and trains fail is displayed.

    I must be missing something here... Why can you not simply remove the wiring harness from the sensor and plug it into a new sensor instead of removing the entire wiring harness?

    hello, im getting the Trans Failsafe reading on dash, i believe its giving gear ratio codes. My 03 L322 with 130k, is shifting fine through all gears manually and automatically for around 15 minutes and then it clunks into 5th gear and the Transfailsafe mode comes on. it will remain in 5th gear until the next morning and will repeat the process. does that sound like a selenoid problem or perhaps an internal clutch issue? if so how much is a rebuild on this trans going cost? thankyou

    How do we know it’s exactly that? Some other videos they had same message and they had to change input output sensor inside transmission housing. I have a 2004 hse 74k miles.

  • @Truthfulfisherman
    @Truthfulfisherman 7 месяцев назад +1

    Could other problems cause this message? My car started with transfer box neutral then the fail safe program. Then suspension inactive. Then finally the check engine turned on giving me two codes. P1709 park/neutral switch out of self test range
    And p0721 output speed shaft sensor circuit range performance. Any one seen this before?

      Got this off a x5 forum.... Incidentally, on the GM 5L40-E transmission used in the 3.0 litre models the switch is mounted inside the casing so the sump has to be dropped to access it.

    I have a 03 Range Rover hse, I had the whole suspension conversion done from air bag to shocks and springs, I also did a 3inch lift kit along with with 20x12 moto metal wheels and size 33 inch tires drove it for a day and it gave the light on the dash saying the same thing what it says on this video “transmission fail safe mode” turns on fine but wen I drive it for like 5 to 10 mins the light on the dash lights up and the car truck loses power but the rpms climb fast wen stepping on the gas, I had a buddy bring his scanner and on the scanner it says improper gear ratio 5. What does that mean? Can anyone explain pls?

    I have a 2011 RR Supercharged. Getting "Gearbox Fault" occasionally. When I start uo, sometimes I put the car in drive or reverse, and there will be the message "gearbox fault". The car will drive but in "limp mode". To reset, I put the car in park, and then the car wont let me shift again, its locked. To reset, I turn the car off and retry. 85% of the time it works and the car works normally. There are no issues with the transmission otherwise, the car drives like a dream, and long as it gets started well.
    This is frustrating. Ive always thought it had to do with the cable or switch, because if I put it into gear quickly it reduces the amount of times this fault comes on. Some cay its the mechatronic unit, some say I need a whole new transmission....The quote to replace transmission is 9,500 from land rover, and about 8,000 from indi shop. Its really not a debilitating issue, if it faukts turn off, reshirft and goes away most the time.
    Do you think this neutral sensor switch change will help? I keep thinking its a "switch" problem

      I used the BMW part, however the plug wires are much shorter! I had to splice with old sensor plug wires, but it saved me from dealing with trying to unplug the connector plug that is bolted on top and back of engine under that filter vent.

    • @muttuk7725

    • @donharris1615
      @donharris1615 5 лет назад

      It worked for me! But the wires was too short, so I had to splice into old wire to make long enough. Spice under truck near transmission so you don't have to struggle with unplugging from up top and back of the engine!

    I've been getting the trans failsafe prog message, always after driving for about 15 miles. Is a neutral sensing switch usually the cause of this problem?

    • @RimmerBrosTV
      @RimmerBrosTV  7 лет назад

      It could very easily be as was the case on our vehicle. However, we would always suggest taking it to have proper diagnostics run to make sure.
