That first song, Just That Way, was amazing!! Got right to my heart ♥️. Ive been listening to it on repeat. Helped me get my mind off a lingering problem today, which music always tends to do for me 😊. The introductions to all these wonderful artist is priceless. Thank you Leland🙏
First heard Mac at Fulton Chapel on the Ole Miss campus around 1978. Never heard of him before that, but my frat brothers from Tupelo said you have to hear this guy. Glad I did!
Thank you so much for this. I live in Iuka, MS, 15 miles from Belmont, MS where Mac grew up. Love the songs, Mac is fantastic and so are you. Thanks for the blessings and stories from you amazing career. You are a true blessing. Always enjoy your videos.

I have been playing and listening as long as you. So much for my credentials..... as I watch and listen to people like you, King, Taylor and others I am impressed by your (and their) kind humanity. I notice it in every thing I am lucky enough to stumble across. The contribution of you and your crowd to music is impossible to measure. At 74, I have squandered my musical life due to many obligations. I have decided to try and find some old farts to play some quality tunes like yours before our brains fade. God bless you, yours and all these amazing players!
Mac's voice is surprising when you see him in person. First time I heard him I was expecting a deeper range. He reminds me of a gentle giant. He does a couple of solo songs during JB's concerts and he's a crowd favorite. (of course everyone in the Reefer Band are favorites😉) 🦜✌😎
More reasons to wonder why Mac isn’t a household name in the music field. I saw you on Kelly Clarkson’s show. She really did a nice job on You’ve Got A Friend! Carole should be happy with that performance. Stay safe and stay well!
"Just That Way" -- haunting and timeless .. those lyrics .. everything here is genius. Wow. The first verse hooks you right away and you feel that fear (or at least I have felt that fear) of the very beginning of a potential relationship or marriage .. terrifying but so many of us have been there! "Two people in house alone." I forgot what that felt like but this is so amazingly picturesque and simple yet so deep. Always good to be reminded of your youth and the innocent fear and bravery ... I could go on and on .. I LOVE lyrics! 🥲 Damn this is a great record. Bravo!!!!
This song and those lyrics hit me the same way they hit you! I'm a song writer and I always try to tell a story that has meaning to more than just me. Mac has a gift that way that I would give anything to have. I hope Lee knows just how much the artists he shares with us effect some of us. I'll be sure to tell him the next time I see him!! Take care Beki

Hi Lee - thank you for this. It's lovely to hear Mac McAnally again. Since your initial introduction to his music for me, I have been enjoying his work very much. Lovely stuff. Here's wishing you another fantastic tour this weekend with the IF.
Beautiful ❣️ Thank you for Mac today Leland. What a gift. Missed the Kelly show, when is the next one? So glad the Canyon Club booked you again. Really taking off, how wonderful. It seems that there are always pressing tasks at home that are plentiful when there are plans to be away. I always have that experience. Stay safe everyone 🤗 and have a wonderful rest of your Wednesday 👍😉
Your playing on "Southbound" is classic Lee. It has so informed my playing for decades. A heartfelt thank you for your beautiful but in the pocket playing. And thanks for this particular post. Mac is SO great. And I had never thought of his vocal similarity to JT. I love these videos. Thanks again!
I had a friend who grew up on a ranch outside of Vancouver, Canada and he told me a story of where they were doing chores, working etc... but he said everything stopped when someone stopped by. His mother would put food and something to drink out and he said before you knew it, 3 hours had vanished.
I had the joy of spending some "quality" time with Mac upon the release of his first album, around Spring, 1978. He was playing a gig on a flatbed truck at what was then Hinds Jr. College in Raymond, Mississippi (I'm originally from neighboring Jackson, MS). We'd been playing his album like crazy on what was then WZZQ-FM in Jackson. A friend who had managed my college frat-party band had known Mac for a while, so when Mac was in town for his gig, he wound up crashing on my living room sofa. A truly magnificent fellow, a seriously talented gentleman. I continued to play his releases at every station I worked for, and I'm still really happy that I got to spend that time with him in a rundown apartment in the Belhaven neighborhood in Jackson.
My wife and I were there! ( Hinds Jr. College 1978) Lived in Jackson at the time. I new Mac in the mid 60’s, he and a cousin grew up together in Belmont.
One of the impressive things about Mac is he has such a distinctive voice, but when he does backing vocals on someone else's records he blends perfectly.
Hey, Lee and everyone! If I were blindfolded and listening to this session's music (which never happens) then I would have sworn that James Taylor is today's artist. Both McAnally and JT share lyrical commonalities, similar prosody, and cultural lenses. Nice show!
Good morning Lee. Sounds like another busy day for you. Thanks for this music. GEEZUS, I love harmony!!! The thing with much music today, the most you hear is the music but not the artist; it’s just noise in some cases. I particularly like enunciation so that I can clearly hear the words and the story being told by the artist. I’m not a country fan however, I like how some artists does a great job doing this. There is no doubt that Mac delivers! Thank you for the intro!
Hi 👋 Lee .... Hope this week has brought you tons of peace love @ human kindness ❤ Kim-n-Carolina P.S... NEVER HEARD THIS GENTLEMAN, BUT HE DOES SOUND KINDA LIKE JAMES , IF YOU DIDNT KNOW ALL JTs music lol
MAC McAnally has a great voice and his song writing is earnest and soulful! Today’s tracks sound well balanced with pristine playing. If this is Deep Country then count me in! 🙏
Wonderful, missing Jimmy Buffett and listened to lots McAnnely! I listen to lots of your programs stemming from my original acquaintance with your work with Rita Coolidge.
He got a lot of covers from this album: Sammy Kershaw "Southbound," Kenny Chesney "Back Where I Come From" and "Down the Road," Linda Davis "Company Time," Southern Pacific "Invisible Man," and others.
I seems like I heard a few of these several times along with Merle Haggard singing Rainbow Stew, and my earliest memory of hearing George Straight. It was all on the same road trip over the radio west to east through the Kansas part of the journey. We had one of my older twin cousins and she knew how to dance to these and tried to teach me. We also had a large Border Collie with us. Stopped off at several lakes along the way. I was surprised to be more familiar with these than I thought. :)
Leland you need ask Mac about a song he used to do called "Kosciusko" about a town on the Natchez Trace in Mississippi.....it's a great little tune and he played in Jackson MS for several years in the 80's and he would add verses......so Good!! Love Mac!!!!!
One time - if you can believe it - I heard on the Lawrence Welk show, the singers do a version of It Was Almost Like A Song. I couldn’t believe it. It was awesome but Ronnie’s version is just perfect! The production is phenomenal on it. It makes you feel so good and sad simultaneously.

Most of the time we are hired to create the parts. There is a sketch of the tune and we fill in the blanks.
👋👋
Back Where I Come From....the overall pitch is a little off. Any idea how that happened?!
Great stuff, his voice, the music and of course that bass..maybe ,on the plane ride east, you can finally get a little rest. Stay safe🖕
