Happy 42nd Birthday Ndume!
We wish you outside time, sunshine and lots of birthday foliage.
Ndume had access to the outdoors nearly every day at The Gorilla Foundation. He could choose whether he wanted to be inside or outside and would frequently switch between the two. We have a big persimmon tree next to the large outdoor enclosure, and persimmons ripen in the fall, right around Ndume’s birthday. He would frequently request the foliage, by knocking or clapping and responding to spoken english questions about what he wanted. If he requested more persimmon leaves, we were happy to provide them from the nearby tree.
Ndume was able to communicate with us his wants and needs which enabled us to provide care tailored just for him.

I find it very relaxing to watch videos of Koko. I wonder if anyone has ever tried this as a therapy for elderly patients with dementia or even just people who suffer from high anxiety. I know it works for me.
