- The three families taking part in the program are introduced. Tony, Diane and their son Michael from Hull. Scott and Leanne from Liverpool who plan to start a party business and single mum Rachel.
Three long-term families dependent on benefits are given a cash handout of 26,000 each, the current maximum yearly benefit cap for most families. In return, the families must agree to sign off benefits, and see if one large cash sum can turn their lives around for good.
The experiment asks the families to use the money in a way that can positively change their circumstances, make them happier and ultimately remove them from the benefit system. However, there are no strings attached and contributors will make their own decisions, spend money as they want but with the knowledge that they've given up their lives on benefits, and there's no more to come.
Will the families be able to grasp this extraordinary opportunity or will the temptations of a large sum of money in their bank account distract them from their good intentions of building a business or finding work?

I was wondering the same! I thought it was just me!
My stepfather is from Borneo. He came to the UK with nothing. Growing up my family was on benefits for years, but my stepfather went to college to learn accounting in his late 20's, this old boy took a shine to my stepfather and started giving him work, cut a long story short he's now financial director for the company he works for. He took on 3 English kids as his own and is the best man I know. Someone gave my stepfather a chance, which I am very grateful for.
Sounds like your stepfather is mostly to credit for those chances though. I’m sure his intelligence and work ethic were obvious to the man who gave him a shot. Otherwise, I doubt he would have bothered. Your stepfather seems to be an ambitious man, who knew what he wanted and worked hard for it. Those kind of people are the ones who make the world go round. I’m happy things worked out for him and your family.

I came to UK from PL 14 years ago, with nothing with me than a suitcase full of clothes and some money for 2 month rent. I was working in salad shop, in hotels as a cleaning staff, in factory on production line. Sometimes I would go and spend my whole weekend working for extra £25. And I was saving a lot. I have studied here in the OU while working full time to get a diploma. Now I have much better paid job with better salary and my own place. I went through this journey on my own, noone has helped me. If I made it everyone can, they just need to have a plan and start working on it.
Why did you leave your country of origin?
Well done Iza. Your hard work has paid off and you have a better life because of it. you deserve it.

They should have gotten a class to teach them financial literacy before giving them that much money!
I think that was the point of the experiment, to see how they would go without any direction or advice.
@@metallicamatty This is just show business. The producers had to take advantage of these people, I'm sure that these families did not have a chance due to their lack of money management and not having any basic business knowledge, and finally, none of them knew just what they did not know, that will be their down-fall.
@@frankupton141 An experiment was done several yr.s ago in California where they put a $100k in a briefcase in front of a dumpster diver who had been previously screened for substance abuse, mental problems and so on. I was out of work once for around a year and it was the worst time of my life. I had bits of agency work and cash in hand work but it was a hard time. I didn't sign on as it's just not enough to manage each month. Luckily I was single, it's way to easy judge people but if you've got a family sometimes it's your only option to sort something out fast but the trouble is it becomes a trap. Free child care and health care is a really big decider for low income families as once you work it's all becomes expensive. It's a double edge sword

What a lot of you here fail to realize is that buying a playstation, or whatever it is is integral for the economy to function. We want people to buy consumer goods because consumer spending is an integral part of economic growth. This is stressing me out like why didn't some of them think of paying the rent and bills for the year first?😦
First thing I would've done. Year of rent upfront and council tax, get in credit with gas, electric and water and see what I have left.
That’s why they are in this situation in the first place
cuz they didn't work for the money, so they don't know the value of it
They didn't know these bills exist, the government has always paid it for them.
@@TheDarkivist Agreed. Get yourself out back to zero then set up your situation so you have credits to create breathing room so you can move up.
I feel like the best course of action in this case is to use the money to eliminate the barriers you previously had to getting a salaried job. Need a professional wardrobe? A course certification? Transportation in the form of a car and gas? Maybe a bus pass? A computer or a cell phone? Use the remainder to attend to immediate problems such as health or serious quality of life issues, and stash the rest away in case one of the employment opportunities falls through partway through the year.
Ideally, you would start replenishing the 26k as you receive your paycheque. Starting your own business without any salaried income seems incredibly risky to me.

A cruel experiment.
Give them some life skill training and then the money. This was just showbusinss and can only add to their sense of failure.
Schools should be teaching real life skills.
Rok Gok Parents should be teaching life skills! Schools are already having to feed and dress these kids, some parents seem to have abdicated all responsibility. Kids are starting school in nappies, unable to communicate at all but the most rudimentary level- all because of lazy parents. By the time my generation started school we had basic reading skills, could probably tell the time, and unquestionably we were able to speak properly, feed and dress ourselves. Kids did have little toilet accidents but nobody was in nappies past toddler age. Certain parents today seem to expect schools, or at the very least someone else to teach their children literally everything.
@@spencerwilton5831 I meant life skills as in interest rates, mortgages, pensions, finance, economics ...etc, if you are trying to lift people out of poverty, you can't expect the parents to teach them about these subjects as they have no experience themselves! But you are right about the other stuff.
@@gruunt4064 Because you can't trust people who have no knowledge of finance to teach finance, teaching finance to two generations of children properly would have an effect on the future of this country in the long run, raising people out of poverty.
None of these people want to work if they really wanted to better their situation they could get a job any job if it's minimum wage don't matter. They could use the income to invest in learning, books, courses, qualifications to move up and earn more they could learn skills to make additional income. They're lazy, can't be arsed they want everything while expending zero effort.
It’s a fairly cruel experiment, considering almost all of the adults seem largely uneducated & obviously have no clue how to start or run businesses, especially the first guy. It’s essentially just throwing money at them and waiting to see who ends up back on benefits first.
Not to mention, Tony doesn't even seem to know how to wash his hair 🤢

😂😂😂🤦♂️. Sad but true
@@JaxDaggerI thought the experiment is to see if they'll use the lump sum to benefit themselves. Our flat didn't have heating as council wouldn't fix the boiler black mold everywhere, holes in floorboards etc
The bad thing is that son grew up and probably never worked. His life is playing games and signing on. He signed off to get a PlayStation & games. Who signs off and then instead of panicking about “where’s the money gonna come from?” decide that they NEED a gaming console and games?!? He just thought WOW! He can now play games and have his mum bring more tasty snacks up to his room. It was life changing money, but it was luxury in that he no longer has the burden of getting up and walking in the rain to sign on.
Easy money to spend but hard to save up that amount.

ThisWonderfulLife Perhaps, but an electrician can earn six figures, more than enough to pay for additional care when needed. Mum could stay at home and look after the kids, perhaps working part time while they are at school. Dad could and should work full time.
I have two special needs children, both autistic, both high anxiety and my youngest also has adhd and developmental dyspraxia. My husband works full time and I take care of my boys.....so I agree, why can’t he work? If we can with two special needs......
I worked and my son is Autistic, he is now in College.

It's cool watching this as someone living on benefits in Australia for the last 2 years after an accident that broke my back 3.5 years ago and I'm on the slow path to recovery, I was also diagnosed with Autism just over 2 years ago. I have been a photographer before that and I still have ambitions to be very successful but living on a small amount of benefits is so difficult. If I had say $40k given to me like this I would turn that into a $100k plus salary per year its just building up what's needed for it and the financial security to know I've got money to keep that wave going.
I'm looking forward to watching this series and also possibly learn some things where they might have made some mistakes and where not to apply do it in my life, I can see one thing that keeps popping up with two of the three house holds and that is market research into what's around them and the target audience. Hopefully they all do well.

The first thin g the adults should have done was not tell the kids anything about the experiments. Kids can guilt a lot of things and money out of their parents.
Or they can just learn how to tell their kids "no", and ignore their whining and protests
That’s the first thing I thought. Kids not to know anything. No news to friends or family. Carry on as normal. And just look for jobs/get training. Immediately a £600 request for an absolute waste of money gaming setup.
I agree . Certain things the kids do not need to know they shouldn’t be worrying about money and bills .
GuppyG yes 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Ruqayyahs Muva there should be no sudden big spending. Carry on as normal, but instead of lazing around all day...go on short courses (first aid, fire safety, food safety, security officer) get in the library. Driving lessons. Get an interview suit....maybe work boots, gloves, hard hat, hi vis, overalls....toolkit. Set up a new bank account or two. Work out bills for 6 or 12 months. Maybe pay vital bills 12 months up front, and some 3 to 6 months. The most important thing was to secure education/skills for the son, get mum n dad in work....and make the house safe and hygienic. Mum should’ve got the tooth fixed and learn telephone/catering/till work. Dad should’ve learnt driving, forklift, security/safety officer work. Son should’ve got a laptop and learnt ebay, google search, basic web design and ms office. As well as driving.

I was raised in a 4 room home, you walked in the house, there was the living room, coal stove, to the right was the kitchen and to the back was a bed room and directly to the left as you entered that bedroom was an entrance to another bed room. NO hot water heater and we had an out house! My parents were both very ill! We had nothing, living from day to day! I grew up, joined the service and now have a BA and AA college education and just retired from the military. I'm doing great and my children have never lived the life I did growing up! I WILL SAY THIS, PEOPLE WHO ARE TERMINALLY ILL DO NEED HELP!
The elderly and the sick are the only ppl who should be on welfare.
U guys are mad dum bragging about yourself you broke mate 🤌🏼
Thank you. I do need help.
@@Laoriginal718I disagree. Everyone should be on welfare and work if they want to.
Amazing that people complained about the benefits cap of £26000 being too low. Yet millions of us get up and go to work for work for far, far less - the bishops amd bleeding heart brigade were shouting that paying people "just" £26k to sit at home was cruel yet not a word about the decent people who have to pay for that out of thier taxes yet earn far less and *work* for it. I guess it's not so trendy to be seen defending the workers.
Not This Guy Again Quality of life is hard to compare. For £1500 a month in or around central London you will get you a small one bedroom flat probably with no garden.
Then you take into account the cost of diesel (£1.30 a litre) tobacco (£14 for 20 cigs) food costs and an array of ridiculous taxes we are forced to pay(council tax Tv license etc) you are way better off.
The problem is the low wage economy we have where most low paid workers need a top up from the government to cover rents(housing benefits).
Glen Graham that £26k in handouts is tax free too. For a worker to take that amount home in a year, their salary would probably have to be around £35,000- significantly more than the national average. The system is broken of someone who has opted out of working for a living and instead chosen to breed like a rabbit and rely on benefits gets more than someone who grafts every single day. If it were up to me I'd build vast blocks of very basic accommodation on the edge of cities, and say to anyone on benefits you can live there or get a job and live where you want. I'd stop virtually all cash handouts in favour of healthy grocery deliveries.
Spencer Wilton The £26000 is misleading and is actually a maximum for a family. Average benefits gives you about £3 a day for food so please stop giving the impression that it is some luxurious living.
The main problem is the average wage once you remove the top 10% of earners is way too low(around 16k). This gives people no incentive to work or care about the quality/productivity of their work.
@@propagandaisnottrue2121 £16000 is the minimum you can get for a 38 hour week on the very minimum wage so how can £16000 possibly be the average.

I still love how these people say things like "I have to pay bills from this money", yeah mate so does everyone else, but they WORK for it and dont get free homes and reduced council tax.
Do they think people who work have £1000's a month left over, most will be lucky to have £200 disposable left on min wage a month after they pay their rents and bills
Whose paying for this then. People like my dad who works so hard and then gets taxed 1500£ A MONTH! He works so hard and he should keep his money and it should not be sent to people who cba to work. I understand if people are disabled, they should get help because they can’t work but people who can’t be bothered it’s not right😕

I agree, the benefits system should be there for people who genuinely cannot provide a roof over their heads or in time of emergency such as redundancy as a temporary measure. Not a life long income opportunity like the labour government want!

Tony D'Annunzio no he does it’s becuase he’s a ceo of an academy trust which has the best schools in my area. He turns the worst performing schools into outstanding so.
Giving the person the money they would get anyway in one sum and they don’t need it anymore for a number of years costs less in the long run.
I really don't understand how its so hard to work. And I think you have the right to control your life and do what you want when it's your OWN money.
Problem is people on benfits never plan a little bit ahead to understand having 10 kids aren't going to make things better
You're setting these people up for failure. This is a questionable process and that's being generous.
👍
Not really, depends on the person. The couple who run Party Animalz have turned out a true success - but they had a plan and an idea that was reasonable. The single mum was a 50/50 - we never found out exactly it she managed to find work before the 12 months were up, this follow up has shown she didn’t - but she had cleared her debt and put herself in a stable financial position. That said, if you have a blank CV for 15 years, you’re going to genuinely struggle unless you start at the bottom; Tesco, McDonalds etc. To get recent experience.
the older couples were clearly set up to fail though - not well educated; financially nor traditional education
That's why it's called a social experiment and not a social solution.
The problem is not lack of money its financial illiteracy. Sad how these people only know to put their hand out and not put them hands to work
@General Guile That's what a lazy person would say.
why not share blame on the system that requires them to not better themselves? require financial classes or job training instead of going through the motions of applying to jobs they really do not want? require schooling or other things to help teach these ppl what they never had a chance to learn.

It takes more than just knowing a trade to start your own business. Spot on , it’s all very well people vilifying them but they have no experience /understanding. They are human beings anyway, whatever they do or don’t do we live in the 21st century now and everyone should have their basic needs met no matter what their situation , I would sooner these people have it than give tax breaks to huge corporations ,corrupt politicians and royalty .
The thing is this is an experiment to see how people handle it. If this is rolled out across the uk they wouldn’t be able to give individual financial support to everyone. The idea is that they should seek it out.

Isn't is funny how it's always the large, poor families who's children seem to suffer from ADHD? It literally was unheard of when I was growing up. Now it's a badge of honour for some people, used increasingly to justify a sponging lifestyle. I had a summer job once at a safari park, which offered disabled concessions and free entry for carers, i.e. those required to push wheelchairs and deliver personal care for those unable to do anything for themselves. The amount of parents who tried to avoid paying claiming to be a carer to a child with ADHD was unbelievable- their duties as a parent are little different to any parent of young children.
