- Tony and Diane realise that starting a second-hand business is not going to be as easy as they thought. Scott bought bouncy castles last week and now cannot resist a £260 lizard. Rachel pays six months advance rent, and experiences life debt-free for the first time.
Three long-term families dependent on benefits are given a cash handout of 26,000 each, the current maximum yearly benefit cap for most families. In return, the families must agree to sign off benefits, and see if one large cash sum can turn their lives around for good.
The experiment asks the families to use the money in a way that can positively change their circumstances, make them happier and ultimately remove them from the benefit system. However, there are no strings attached and contributors will make their own decisions, spend money as they want but with the knowledge that they've given up their lives on benefits, and there's no more to come.
Will the families be able to grasp this extraordinary opportunity or will the temptations of a large sum of money in their bank account distract them from their good intentions of building a business or finding work?

Same. I wouldn't be able to spend like that. I'd be too afraid of being poor again.

honestly like instead of trying to start a business, which most businesses fail in their first 2 years. They should be trying to stabilize their current life and try to benefit themselves in search of a job. get a savings account and but a bunch of that 26 grand into that account. @@robertse4026 I definitely agree! I'm surprised none of them decided to do an airbnb business. But than again i am a landlord. 🤣

Here in America electricians can make over 100k. There’s a shortage of qualified electricians here.

Exactly he already has the experience and knowledge all he needs is tools and a van that would’ve been cheaper then spending on a whole new business
Yip. Could use money to get extra training if needed and certified.
I didn't understand why he needed to quit his job to look after his son? Surely, he could have still supported his wife while he kept on working? They are still young, so they perhaps could have asked their parents or friends for support if they weren't coping with the boy? Even working part-time might have been beneficial
I thought at the beginning that these people would have advisors with some assistance to plan and prepare...the amount given seems enormous to them because of their extreme poverty but it is a very small amount to get started in a business with any hope of success...if they fall flat...which is likely they will be homeless on the streets....cruel to the children who had no say in this process...this experiment is a mess

It's easy, you take £26,000, divide it by 12 and that is how much a month you have to spend. Then you write down all your outgoings each month, it is not rocket science!
They already get 26k a year. So you would have them live exactly as they were plus all the other expenses incurred by not being on the benefit. I don't think that's how the experiment is supposed to work.
No because it's a one off sum of money. They need to make money to live on if they just divided it up and lived on it for a year they'd be back on benefits at the end. What's the point?

Shah Willoughby The meal was £270 I seem to remember from the previous episode. The £800 was the total spent so far. But I agree, foolish to spend anything that isn't absolutely necessary.
She's a stay at home mum and all the kids are in school and it takes two of them to look after the kids? What a load of cobblers! Single mums have children with problems too, they manage it so that couple could too. Also, they get given twenty six thousand pounds and a qualified electrician starts a pet business? Very suspect, that was easily enough to set up a small electrical company and arthrtis in his hands is no excuse. Millions of tradesmen work with that.
Indeed, indeed
@heldgop Which makes absolutely nothing I said irrelevant.
All the kids are at school so what is stopping him working the school hours and be home when school finishes
Yep. I'm a single mum to 2 boys. One severely disabled, mentally and physically. I went back to school and got my cert 3 in teacher's assistant then began work. Working during school hours so I could be home for my two after school. No husband no maintenance payments.
One thing I have learnt from all these documentaries is that, money management should be taught in school! From observation these people don't understand the value of money. Teach students life skills and money management. Excellent experimental research!
That poor baby raccoon. 😑😞
O m.g. those poor animals....
Buys an expensive hoover but doesnt sort out the scabby walls and doors. Their home is DISGUSTING
Don't be mean witchy poo
If they are renting they probably can't. Here in Australia when you rent you cannot paint or even hang a picture hook up
Can they help it though? There poor arnt they. Should if sorted it out though
Miss Witch Be thankful you don't have to live in it. Although you might have to live in something similar someday. Things can change in a split second. Always be humble and kind.
Agreed they should of got a bottle of bleach instead lol
you can't just hand people who have never had money a lump sum then expect miracles. they need advisors, continuing incoming plus the sum, and credit counseling
Advisors??????🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Brain cells definitely a plus looks like none here

why doesnt the 21yr old son go and get a job instead of playing games all day nerd
That poor lad looks as if he suffers from depression. He could well be unemployable.
He could have a bad back.
so people can only add value to themselves by selling their labour?
Pete Coventry does that 15 year olds parents live on benefits and are in desperate need of money?
Son should be helping out family 👪 but he seems to be a liability!
The bloke with the long hair seems really nice and supportive
Is Tony washing his hair with crisp n dry?
Derek Doig my question is is he washing it?
Brilliant
😅🤣🤣🤣🤣Stop😂😂🤣🤣😅
Hahaha
I’ve never seen anyone as impressive with a hoover doing literally what it was designed to do
Spent £200 on a brand new hoover after talking up second hand bargains and proceeded to hoover one sq foot of floor.
Why do you think they choose these people ? because if they had chosen people with any sense of what to do with money no one would watch the program - its not really about helping people out its about making money for the producers of the program.
The program is available to watch for free. I am not sure how money is generated by something which is out there for free? Is it part of a television show?
Yup every free movie tv show none of them make any money please stay in school
@@margarethenley3181 - yes part of of a TV show and even on RUclips they make money .

400 pounds for a Racoon!
You can get em for free in America.
Yeah but we dont have them here in the UK do we, maybe we could sell you a badger.
There are no raccoons in the UK!!?? They're everywhere here. Digging through my trashcans on trash night, wobbling down the street and back alleys, stealing dog food with their little hands. They have little thumbs! It's terrifying lol. I think I need to start a raccoon export business!
@@SB-or5mj in the UK we don't have them naturally, trash=rubbish n trashcan=rubbish bin. We don't use made up words in the uk lol

Can the “2nd hand” people do their stuff online instead of renting a shop?
Highly doubt they can use a computer
You dont need a 200$ Dyson to vacuum a hard floor. A 5 dollar broom does the same job!
These are years old. And it was part of a quite crazy media denigration of poor and often very vulnerable people, educationally, socially, and economically deprived groups were targeted as scapegoats for the global financial crash, spotlighted, and used as the rationale for a huge change in our system of social security. The result today is wide spread poverty among lower income working people, a massive rise in homelessness, and an increase especially in hunger among school age children, homelessness among disabled people, and shovking an almost doubling of homelessness among the elderly. The life expectancy figures had indicated a continuing rise for many years, this is now reversing. The overall picture today is that the social engineering that programmes like these helped popularise have been an absolute disaster. And consequence of this is that 'employment' which used to classed as part time, full time and self employed is now so muddied that someone doing an hours work a fortnight gets included in the employment figures, giving a totally false impression that the government uses over and over where it describes the nation as having 'near full employment', and constantly tries to create an impression that things are immensely better than they actually are. Hence there is now a very angry and divided nation, because all but those who are economically comfortable are not fooled one little bit.
Couldn't of said it better myself. It's an angry bitter nation UK. Everyone just looks out for themselves there's also the working poor working for nothing basically.
Vanishing support for disabled people too. There's been people who died on a Tues, receiving a letter saying they are fit for work on the Friday. It's not even enough to be dying now.
Write that to Brexit or the DWP...
100 percent true mate. Well said..
“But there’s one outstanding problem. Tony doesn’t know how to drive”… WAITTTT, so all this time he wanted a van to go and find bargains to buy and sell but he doesn’t have a license??????
Next episode please I wish all these families success and if they should fail at least they tried

They needed to be told what to expect in regards to bills coming in they didn’t previously have. How can you budget if you don’t know this vital information. Also putting a years must pay living costs aside straight away would have been smart .
Most of them wouldn't of had enough left over to do anything useful, like start a business.
Lets be honest we are not dealing with smart people .
becs kirk a very valid point. But it raises another. Why aren't they aware already? Just because the government pays their rent etc, there is no reason why they shouldn't know how much things cost. All benefit claimants should get a monthly statement detailing exactly how much is being spent on their behalf. It might at least shame some of them into contributing more to society.
Spencer Wilton in the Netherlands the government gives you welfare money, child benefits, housing and medical benefits. They give this in cash.
The downside to this is that these plebs empty their account on day 1 then booz booz booz, smoke and buy expensive phones etc and then don’t pay the bills.
When they rack up enough debt the taxpayers have to bail them out again and it repeats again.
Muslims and the people from Aruba etc are notorious for this
400 odd pounds for a trash panda? I got four living up the fire escape you can have for free.
Sell them £££
Trash panda 🤣 sell them to Scott
Giving families a huge sum of money without any financial advice seems rather irresponsible to me. There has been no budgeting advice, no bills advice and no advice on how to start to start a business. This seems to me as almost criminal.
Sorry to said this but I feel like Scott will make his whole family benefit signed off into the biggest flop for them.
I know eh? My bets were pinned on Scott in Episode one.
“Rapidly expanding business” - he hasn’t made a single penny yet! 😂😂
