    I found my dog at a skydive dropzone near Houston while on the road last winter. She turned out to be pregnant. I live in a 20' travel trailer and I was slowly making my way to the desert of southern California. By the time I got to Arizona, it had become alarmingly obvious that she was pregnant. Thankfully, a rescue in Phoenix saw my plea for help on Facebook and lined up a foster to take the dog and raise the pups. I went back to pick her up three months later and continued my road trip with her sans puppies. This winter, I'm living and working at that skydiving facility, so she's basically back where I found her after a year on the road.

      You take Trinity to the dump station! 🤣🤣🤣 i'll have to keep that in mind next time. But our little pup, Olivia, is pretty good about going if she runs into gravel. I don't know what's attractive about that but maybe that's what her backstory is, living on gravel. (She was turned into a high-kill shelter because the family hadn't bothered to fix her and she got pregnant and they dumped her, saying they had "too many dogs". Go figure… She had the babies, they were adopted out, they fixed her and put her up for adoption at an SPCA in a different part of the state near us that has a higher adoption rate. (And a shoutout to the good people who work in high-kill shelters for the hard work they do to try to get those animals out and into loving homes. It's a tough job.)

    Side note: I’m not sure if you guys are aware of this or not but I’m commenting just incase. Truck stops are FANTASTIC options for dumping, and they are easily accessible along most highways. Also, I do know that Loves has been updating quite a few of their stores, adding RV spots. So if you’re unable to find a place to dump your trash, just hit up one of the thousands of truck stops along the interstate.

    LOL at the bunny just chilling in the backseat. We had a dog and a free roaming ferret at the same time. They got along great. So glad Trinity and Cody(sp?) are, too.
    Dogs who find us are the best. Our pup was found wandering a big city. He is such a sweetie that the policeman who found him called a rescue that we volunteer for, and asked if they could find him a home. Since it was December 23, the rescue asked us to foster him just through the holidays, and then they’d find him “permanent” foster home. He walked into our house, looked around, and decided that he’ll take this one. :) He imprinted on us SO fast, he became our Christmas miracle and is the best dog.
    You can absolutely train them to go when commanded. Our dog does. I wonder if she’d still pee near the patch if you dug it up and replanted it outside your door.
    God does handle everything. Hasn’t dropped me yet!
    I wish you wouldn’t stress over the post time. I owned a marketing agency for 25ish years and used to be the same way about issuing e-letters at the recommended times. Years of data told me it never mattered that much. IME, people watch videos around their schedules. I watch them at 11pm every night, before sleep.

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  7 месяцев назад +1

      "God does handle everything. Hasn’t dropped me yet!"
      Nothing is truer than that. And even when we think He's dropped us...usually it's simply because something didn't go the way we had it planned out and He had something else in mind.
      Re: the post time - we kinda like the idea of hearkening back to the old TV era when families would gather and watch something at a specific time. I do know we have a few people who do that with us every Friday night - so I really want them to be able to keep that routine. BUT - we will be taking a week off of posting soon in order to get 1 week ahead in our production schedule to reduce our own stress a tiny bit. 😁 -J

    Drawer retainer: From the leg space under the desk, drill through the cabenet into each drawer, then put pins with some kind of pull loop into the holes when traveling. Could be anywhere along the length of drawers. Towards the front for easy access, or at the back out of the way where pins could be left sticking out when not engaged
    If you want something more automatic: you can buy push button latches, but it would be a bigger project with more expensive hardware that you would spend a while tracking down.

    Regarding the desk drawers: if you can make it work with the shape of the desk, an exercise strap around them top to bottom would probably do it. It’s like a giant 3” wide rubber band.

      @@OpenRoadingI had the same idea, but I thought of some of the downsides for that...🤔
      So another similar idea would be to make a fabric velcro strap (with the velcro positive on the fabric) horizontal on the left and right sides, and then put a small piece of wood (felt or something on the back so it doesn't wear off the paint, or something similar) on the side facing the drawers.

    14:45 So, add some Auxiliary Lights! Here in Michigan, pickup owners who attach snowplows in the winter have raised headlights which illuminate beyond the light-blocking plows. I don't like to drive after dark as much as I used to, but extra lights make night driving safe.
    Edit: What will make a huge difference with Trinity is taking a specific hour each day to work on training for her. One critical thing to work on is getting her to return to either of you immediately, without pausing or indifference. A second is training her to lay down, and stay, no matter what is going on. I'm so glad that you decided to keep her, she seems like a real sweetheart!

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  8 месяцев назад

      It's funny you mentioned that about Trinity - we just started working on this today. We had been working on sit and laydown commands but she is VERY bad when it comes to coming when called. So we literally started working on this today. It's gonna take a while I'm sure because she is easily distracted but we've got a game plan!
      Lights - I've considered them, and may spring for them in the future. At the moment we just prefer not to drive at night so it's nice not to have extra stuff. That's always our number 1 thing when it comes to adding things to our gear is that we then have another thing to store somewhere when not in use. -J

      I really do appreciate this.
      For me you have to understand that we flamed out with youtube twice before. And by "we" I mean primarily me...as the editor.
      There is a lot this time around that is different, including a crazy awesome community that has developed around the channel. But one of the things that I'm doing that's different is I'm treating this as a job. I worked in local news in a previous life and we HAD to hit our time slot...and I RARELY missed them. But for some reason I would make excuses for youtube and we'd post a day late...then two days...then a week....and then full flame out.
      So this time around I decided this IS my job and as such, I want to pull in the attitude that I had with my old news days, I want to hit my time slot. 😀 Nope - not the end of the world if I miss it, but boy do I feel a lot better looking back and saying "Hey - I've hit my goal for X number of videos." -J

    We Need To Find A Way To Hook Up Your Bike to the rear of the camper. One to alleviate and balance the bike on it. I'd put the bicycles if possible on the front to give your headlight the best view.
    With the tire, take some soap and water to see pinhole location could be a simple plug job and get a tire repair kit which might be better to take tire off wheel at a shop and have it patched from inside. But if the hole is on the side wall, then replace it because it can cause a blowout.
    Love the content Your Veiwer,
    Lcpl. Brandon Rice USMC RETIRED

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks so much. The rear of the camper is only rated for 200lbs and I'm afraid that even if I upgraded the hitch that I could severely damage the camper frame by putting that much weight hanging off the back. We're just gonna continue to try not to drive at night. 😂
      As to the tire, we found the leak back in September (I didn't film it) with the very thing you mentioned. It actually took me forrrrreeevvverrrr to find it because the leak was exactly that tiny. It was the tiniest of pinholes in the sidewall. So tiny that you had to sit and wait for it to blow a bubble. Like..it wasn't evident right away. Because it was so small we kept our eye on it, never running soft between then and now because we wanted to change all 4 tires at once as close to Alaska as possible.
      Welp, as you'll see in an upcoming video...that time has come and no fears of blowouts anymore! And the truck looks a little meaner with its new treads. 😂
      Thanks so much for watching and commenting! My favorite part of this whole youtube thing is the comment section. I worry how I will handle it if we ever get to the place where I can no longer respond to everyone. It would be a good problem to have, but it would make me sad. -J

      I have heard of one of those and not the other! For some reason I have always struggled with getting crisp video from youtube if I do anything less than the big guns. That said, I haven't specifically used handbrake.

    A dog and a rabbit. You need to round out the species with ... a bird. I'm thinking 🤔 African Grey Parrot🦜. 😅. Think of your Christian truck as a mini Ark. 😮

We live in Grande Prairie, Alberta which is on the Alaska Highway so maybe we will bump into you guys on your way one to the North one day! God bless you guys! Jason and Dora

      @@OpenRoading It's not bad, it is a different set-up. They give us an ATCO trailer to work out of and all the trucks check in and out by radio, and we have an electric operated gate to bar entry, so we end up being nice and toasty except for when we fuel the generator or sweep the snow off the walk.

    You two are cool. We have done gate guarding and the beat harvest. You need to check into Boondockers welcome and harvest host. Great overnight camping and sometimes a few days very cost effective. We are not full timers but use the Boondockers when we travel. We are also host. Meeting wonderful rivers hope you make Alaska. Just found you today I’m hoping you can stay warm while this arctic blast is go on. Safe travels

      Boondockers welcome is great! I think we looked at it and their either wasn't something available in the area or because we weren't sure how long we were going to be in limbo we wanted to get somewhere and not move until we had our next job. One of those two....
      We're surviving the cold so far! You'll get a full report on it in a future vid. 🥶 -J

      @@OpenRoading there is 5400 Boondockers welcome and harvest host sites across America they are two separate businesses but under the same ownership ! When join there is an app ( of course) you have to do a bio on ourselves. The host also does a bio. The host has right to approve or disapprove. Depending on what’s going on with their life’s. Myself I have let rivers stay even when we were not home. We are between st.Louis mo and Springfield I’ll. On the mother road Route 66. I believe Boondockers welcome is $89 for the year and harvest host $139. Don’t hold to the price I’m just a host and traveler. The nights camping is free but if we supply elect we ask for a $10 donation per night. If you don’t use electricity it total free. Harvest host host have products to sell example a winery would expect you to buy a bottle of wine. But the camping is free. When we stayed at Walmart we usually buy something there. This just gives you a lot of opportunity for another way to have a nights camping and to meet people. Oh my other suggestion is to get an extra fuel tank. I have an extra 90 gallon tank so when I find a good price on fuel to load up for the long hauling travel days. Also do you use Mudflap discount card ?? Also the TSD card that gives you discount fuel at certain big truck stops. These have saved us money one time and it depends on the day and price but I put in 365$ of fuel and got a $65 dollar discount. I just found you and I am enjoying your channel. Be blessed

      Being part of anyones regular routine is the highest praise. Thank you. It is indeed hard work, but comments like this genuinely make it worth it. If you go back a couple years on the channel (I don't recommend it 😂 ) The comments were always crickets and it had a lot to do with why I burned out from creation.
      But back then we weren't creating things that interested people. This time around we realized with the help of some dear friends that what people wanted to see was just real life...in an entertaining way. And ya'll have just been so encouraging along the way. -J

    Get a pair of road legal driving lights and mount them on the lower part of the motorcycle rack with a quick disconnect.
    That way you have good illumination when you have the rack mounted.
    You could also mount some fog lights if you wanted to go all out.
    Just make sure they are aimed correctly so you don't blind oncoming drivers.

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  9 месяцев назад

      I'm strongly considering this. The lack of lights has made it less tempting to drive at night which is a plus, but it also causes needless driver stress (me) when we run into situations like this one. -J
