    It's a tough call, but I do think the Academy made a bold and ultimately correct decision here. All the other performances are absolutely accolade worthy, but Joel Grey's Emcee character is utterly transformative, original, influential, and iconic. Pop culture had simply never seen a character quite like it, and his performance's influence is still felt today.

    If you haven’t seen Cabaret, it’s as brilliant as it is dark and depressing. It’s about a group of people who will never fit in to the “new world order”. It’s set in a sleazy nightclub in Berlin in 1931. Joel and Liza are both amazing. And everyone is beautiful. Even zee orchestra is beautiful.

    • @Trouble-Clef
      @Trouble-Clef Год назад +1

      It’s more about the growth of the Nazi party in Berlin. It starts with just a couple of unwanted Nazi’s in the audience at the beginning when they sing Willkommen, to a bunch at the end. And a whole lot goes on in between with the cabaret being the focal point.

      Paramount didn't want the Best Actor votes split between him and Brando.
      So, instead, the Best Supporting Actor votes got split between Pacino, Caan, and Duvall. I certainly don't mean to say that Joel didn't deserve his win here, but I have to wonder if he would have won if he'd only had one of those three to compete with. As an Academy voter, I would have to look at it this way. Al Pacino, James Caan, and Robert Duvall all had wonderful and outstanding performances, but those performances where mostly done in scenes featuring the other nominated actors. So I feel that they each were dependent on the other for producing the magic on screen. Joel, on the other hand went it alone, and shined on his own in that film. I would be hard pressed to pick a best within the Godfather crew since they had been so dependent on each other, so Joel is the easy out vote here because he does give an award worthy performance.

    • @SpiritMQ
      @SpiritMQ 8 лет назад +10

      +FansFiltration I also feel that they didn't want to award this new bunch of extraordinary talent all combined in one film--- Coppola, Caan, Duvall & Pacino--- who were a great force to be reckoned with (No wonder The Godfather ranks as the greatest movie in cinematic history). Imagine all these guys winning Oscars for The Godfather which in my opinion & in the opinions of many many more, they actually DID. Even after all these years, they have stood the test of time. You watch The Godfather for the umpteenth time & still get totally mesmerized by Michael, Santino & Tom. That's million times better than the Oscar itself. These guys are etched in history.

      The musical genre is an acquired taste but the staging of Caberet is the way it should be done all musical numbers actually done on a stage of course save the chilling beer garden scene. The Godfather was the best film. Caberet is a great film but nearly 40 years later no one talks about it unless they’re talking about musicals and even then for some reason it’s not mentioned in the top 5. The Godfather was then and still now is considered one of greatest piece of filmmaking. As far performances go when you have 3 top flight in one movie the votes were of course split. Great movie ! I recall Joel Grey walking past me off of Avenue of the America's a few years after he won this award....it was dark but I recognized him. Before paparazzi and bodyguards !

    All the other nominees except James Cann won best actor oscars later and one of the presenters James Coburn was to later win a best supporting oscar. Joel was outstanding in Cabaret.

    Pacino should have won the Oscar for his performance. Al Pacino have his best performance in The Godfather part one, not part two. He had so much depth to his character in The Godfather part one and he should have won the Oscar for that film.

    RIP JAMES CAAN ( 26.03.1940 - 06.07.2022 ) James in "The Godfather" gave an amazing performance, but I'm silent about "Misery" in general, he should receive not only a nomination for this film, but also an Oscar, it's a pity that the Academy did not bother to give James at least an "Honorary Oscar" !!! What a pity !!! Blessed memory to a wonderful artist !!! Goodbye Santino Carlione !!! 😭🙏😿

    Godfather fans who have not watched Cabaret yet, please do so! It’s such a great movie, and both Joel and Liza deserved their Oscars for it.

      It's forgettable role. This carried on the academy's back and lead to Denzel losing to Al Pacino for an utterly forgettable role "just in case he never gets an award again".

      As an Italian American who has a strong bias towards The Godfather. I saw Caberet, and I'll admit Joel Grey deserved the Oscar. He took down the Corleone kids, something that Barzini couldn't do.

    Honestly, Joel Grey gives a weird, chilling, yet brilliant performance in Cabaret, but James Caan is incredible in The Godfather.

    Wow. I forgot Cabaret was up against The Godfather. Maybe the three brilliant Godfather actors took votes from one another? Duvall Pacino and Caan for me were all part of one big ensemble cast. But Joel Grey had to center Cabaret otherwise it could have veered off in so many directions. I rarely say an actor deserves it when it comes to awards.. but Joel Grey did!

    Another favorite of mine being Robert Preston. Bravo to the academy for this pick, tho The Godfather is an obvious masterpiece and all of those performances were exemplary

    He deserved that! When they wanted to make the movie the only way they could get permission was if they put Joel Grey, who played the emcee on Broadway, into the movie. You can see why when you watch it. I’ve seen it at least 30 times but probably more. It’s one of the best movies of all time! If you haven’t seen it you should. It’s about the growth of the Nazi party in Berlin in 1931, but the focal point of the movie is the cabaret and how it changes with the times. And everything about Cabaret applies today as much as it applied in 1931-1945. It’s a fabulous movie!!

    In the spring of 72 Cabaret had just opened in a movie theater in Wichita which was 30 miles from our hometown. Opening night was the Saturday of our Jr/Sr Prom. We wore our formal attire to go to the banquet but ditched the dance to go to Wichita to see Cabaret. (All our parents knew our plan) Going to our seats we realized that another group from our high school had done the same thing. But the movie was great and we had a great time and I was mesmerized by Liza's and Joel's performances.
