No wonder Joel Grey is such a Broadway legend. Not just singing the song, but really living the character, with every nuance played perfectly. One of the all-time greats.
Even the way he struggles to put his gloves on - that might have been a genuine flub on his part, but it's perfectly in character for Amos, and Grey doesn't miss a beat.
Yes, a true artist. I haven't seen him onstage since the '80's, but then I saw him in revivals of two shows in which he recreated his classic roles, "Cabaret" and "George M!". What a privilege!
Not if you consider that "Mr. Cellophane" is a pastiche of the great Bert Williams song "Nobody," which deals with the same loneliness and inconsequentiality, but also has the added layer of the Black experience in America.
Agent Fungus I never said otherwise. It's just that 38 year-old Joel Grey with that pancake clown makeup and the sinister fake German accent gave me childhood nightmares. He was so much more loveable as the fatherly Master Chiun in 1985's "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins". He's also far more approachable doing a Chicago accent, as he does here. I don't go back far enough to appreciate his earlier work.
pinz2022 : I'm sure more than a few kids were scared of the Emcee character. Creepy characters are more fun. Mr. Grey gave an excellent explanation of the Emcee character on a RUclips of an old (1972) David Frost show. I don't know if I'd violate some RUclips policy by providing the link. It shouldn't be too hard to find. There is also a great RUclips video of him doing an awesome dance number on the "Eddie Cantor Show."

2/22/22 22:22 I Officially took the title of "Mr. Cellophane". I was at Twin Peaks, where else would I be on Twosday ? I had been there for about 2 hours, ordered beers and dinner. Went to the restroom and came back to the bar, only moved a few seats down. Not even on the opposite side of the bar, didn't take my glasses off, didn't shave my goatee or cut my hair... only took off my jacket. Sat down and the Same beautiful young lady asked me how I was doing tonight and if I wanted anything to drink and if I wanted to order any food. Like I had just walked in. It was a pretty slow night compared to most nights too. Even heard one girl ask the other girl where the guy a few seats down went to. After a couple of shots, I said, "Doesn't it suck when a guy walks out on his bill ?" She said, "Yeah, it does." So I offered to pay "the guys" bill, to which she said, "Are you sure ?" I told her I was, to which she said, "You're sweet." Now, when I Do happen to get noticed, I get called a few different names, but being called "sweet" for paying my Own bill ? That's a Real First !
I've used my existence as Mr. Cellophane to get a Free Lunch before. Went to a Sam's Sports Grill and it was pretty obvious the bartenderette hardly knew I was there, so, when I was done, just got up and left. Went back a week or so later and it was like I had never been there. Nothing like, "Hey ! I remember you ! You didn't pay last time !" Nope. Just business as usual.
Dude, you have a playlist called “Climate Change Lie” in your channel. And what you refer as “Free Lunch” is known as “stealing” in English language you thief. What makes you to think that anyone should care about you?
***** The film was done in a more realistic style. Joel's doing it in the style of the stage musical, where all the songs are done as vaudeville numbers. It's not supposed to be naturalistic.
John C Reiley did it better. He really showed the sadness of Amos. The guys comes off more relishing the fact that everyone ignores him and blows him off like he’s nothing
The Reilly performance was a brilliant rendition in the movie but the two performances are completely different things - let's get John C Reilly to perform it in live in concert, in 25 years and then compare the two.
Saw Joel in this...poor fella...looked like a discarded hand-pupped. No energy or soul. The film version was worse...not worth mentioning... My money is on Barney Martin who embodied the spirit of Bert Williams himself. (Based on Berts' song...'Me? I'm Just Nobody.")
"Hope I didn't take up too much of your time." My darling Mr. Grey, ALL of my time is gladly yours.
Hits. My heart.
J.G. is like Jello, there's always room for them😊

@@kennethwayne6857 OK, I'm jealous. Would you believe I've never seen him live? No-one ever looks good in recordings, except Joel Grey. Every time.
I saw him in the seventies. He loves his audience and soaked up our energy, giving it back to us tenfold @@unclenogbad1509
"It's been a few weeks." 😭
SINCE WHAT? 😂😂 Good pause!!
@@waynejones205 He was having a little trouble getting on that second glove. But no worries!
This is why Joel Grey is a legend. The emotion in some of those lines is impressive.
My god the amount of energy he has here at 81…wow.
I feel like I should be crying through this but I am smiling all the way.
Which means he didn’t do what he was suppose to do with this song. The song is suppose to make you cry
I LOVE Joel Grey! A true stage performer. They don't make em like that anymore.
The last of a generation, he is...
“Don’t make em like that” 😂😂 tf
Watching this man makes me proud to go down in the books as Amos as well. Chicago was a fun show to perform
Unreal performance ❤
My favorite song in the musical. Joel, you are amazing.
Mine too...
ME TOOOOOO
This is the original 'Waving Through A Window'!
Omg you're right 😅

I was thinking about that the first time I heard this song.
Except that show sucks lol
REAL THIS IS WHAT I WAS THINKING
One of the greats. I was in love with the Emcee for years.
Artistry personified! The stuff making life bearable.
Even when he screws up his lines Joel Grey is awesome!
he doesn't mess up his lines
He messed up his gloves.
The words "mess up" and "Joel Grey" do not fit together in a sentence
this is making me feel alive and I don't know why
what a master...
I was eight years old when I saw "Cabaret". That SOB still gives me nightmares.
pinz2022 : My sister and took the bus Downtown to see "Cabaret" several times back in 1971. Also saw him live in the 80s. Joel is genius.

LOVE YOU, JOEL GREY. LOVED YOUR PERFORMANCE HERE.
Congratulations on the Tony Lifetime Achievement Award presented by your daughter, Jennifer Grey :))
Joel Grey. Great….. just great.
To quote a line from Gypsy, And this is a STAR!
OMG so amazing his diction👍
I love Joel Grey.
Absolutely the best!

Ok. I think it might take a while to find a bad performance of this song. It’s sublime.
A MASTER!
He came out last week although his family has known for years. But many people had suspicions for a long time too.
Richie Johnson Oh, puhleeze. Tell us something we didn't know for forty years. Sheesh.

I played Amos in college. Now every time I see our Roxie performing we have a running joke about how I have to pay to see my ex-wife.
I'm about to open as Amos tomorrow night. I'll be sure to let my Roxie know about this joke.
Ho usato questa canzone per il mio saggio di classe
Feels like a song should be in the first Joker film
Joel Grey>>>>>>>>>> (nothing more to say)
😊👏🏻❤️
Does Remo Williams know that Chiun sings on his off time? Remo you must run Very fast.
dieser song beschreibt mein leben (ich bin 58), eigentlich traurig, aber such is life
Jazz Hands? 😊
I like John C. Reilly's rendition better. He sounds sadder. This one sounds like the guy mocking the cellophane man.
***** The film was done in a more realistic style. Joel's doing it in the style of the stage musical, where all the songs are done as vaudeville numbers. It's not supposed to be naturalistic.
Just saying, in the movie the numbers are also performed as vaudeville cutaways.
They were performed as Vaudeville cutaways, however they weren't done in the Vaudeville style
Kevin Cruz right? he sounds way too cocky👎
that is because he is doing it in vaudeville style.

I have music for you Sir
John C. Riley is the second best.

Ben Vereen's version is the best

The saddest song I have ever heard
The original incel anthem.

Way too happy performance, sorry.
Hey! At 85 fkn years old I figure Id be happy waking up above ground...a little respect, eh?
its supposed to be that way. the numbers in Chicago are meant to be performed in a vaudeville style
John C Reiley did it better. He really showed the sadness of Amos. The guys comes off more relishing the fact that everyone ignores him and blows him off like he’s nothing

To be fair to Grey, this might not have been how he performed it on Broadway (I wasn't there, so I wouldn't know).
I like Joel Grey a lot but he's lost quite a bit since Cabaret. Still, he's pretty good but not on this song. Viva John C. Reilly
Cabaret was nearly 50 years ago. I think Joel did amazing here for an octegenarian.
A bit out of tune.
Really? You'll B lucky 2B standing at 85 years old-let alone singing, performing, acting, and being known!
Saw Joel in this...poor fella...looked like a discarded hand-pupped. No energy or soul.

Film version of Chicago? John C. Reilly's rendition of this song was one of the best *ever*!
Ya, I guess "poor" Joel at 85 fuckin years old...still performing, dancing, and acting...reach a little deeper for respect eh?
What a performance
