    If Liberal Democracy was the goal of America for countries around the world to have, then why has it consistently, and continuously, undermined countries that had democratically elected leaders with a different political philosophy to capitalism? I'm not falling for American foreign policy being all about spreading democracy. NO WAY!

    John you said that liberal democracy is the best form of government in for the worlld. I disagrre a civil meritocracy government like China is far superior to liberalism where a clown or comedian or an actor can become president. Goverment must be run by a meritocatic career civil workforce. China has already proven that this is the way for an orderly society. liberalism is just a license to have a disorderly society if the population decides to. Democracy is a slippery slope to anything goes, exhibit a the usa.

    Having grown up in the West I really don't identify with this idea of liberal hegemony. I always thought we were meant to respect other peoples, and the way their societies and countries operate. So, personally I've never had a problem with other countries being whatever they want to be. To me, it's Karen levels of control to think you know the RIGHT way to do things, and then using force or deceit to coence others into being the same. As an individualist, it seems wrong to believe countries can't also be individual in their laws and customs.

    • @Steve-pq7cb
      @Steve-pq7cb Час назад +5

      Perhaps Americans are taught to respect fellow Americans (assume race is not an issue, which is itself a big assumption). But when it comes to other countries, USA loves to tell others what to do and use force if they don't listen. That's hegemony.

    As described by the prof., liberal hegemony is well-intentioned: to bring democracy (albeit American-style), peace and prosperity to other nation states. I wonder if the prof. is aware of the connotation of the word "hegemony" in most people's mind. In my mind, at least, hegemony means imposing one's own wills upon others. If liberalism is what it is as described by the prof., it can not be well-intentioned because liberalism is predicated on safeguarding selfish interests. If "liberal hegemony" is as benign as the prof. wants us to believe, the advocates of "liberal hegemony" should set a good example for the world by bringing democracy, peace and prosperity to its domestic audience first. Unfortunately, the world knows what the reality is: blacks and first nations are treated badly; since the heydays of liberal hegemony, the middle-class has shrunk; and political division and extremism has reached a new level.

    Whatever the philosophy, foreign policy ultimately has to live in the world of regular people and government. There is such a thing as real world interest, such as trade and military bases.
    The problem with the United States is that the people in Washington DC do not seem to be able to adjust to reality. As soon as the war in Afghanistan was over, they started a new war in Ukraine. When it was clear that the trade war against China was lost, they continued. Maybe even more disturbing, they did not seem to care about what they were dealing with. I did not heard any report about them conducting in depth study of issues before they launched the fights. To sum it up, recklessness seems to rule Washington DC. And they are incapable of changing course.

      The Biden admin covered it's eyes n just prayed for the best when Russia attacked Ukraine, n waited for Kiev to be overtaken. It was not until Zelenskyy said he didn't need a ride, he needed ammo, along with so much coverage in Ukraine, the masses leaving. At that point Biden knew he had the backing of America to help Ukraine. It was either that or watch a bloodbath. Plus Ukrainians were showing they were willing to fight for their country. You know this is how it went down. Biden was totally ready to save Zelenskyy. We all were expecting him to be killed, but he was not like the US backed Afghani leader that left as the Taliban took over the city. We didn't care enough to keep our promise of the Budapest Memo n secure Ukraine from 2014 until the full scale attack 3 yrs ago.
      Biden had just suffered an epically embarrassing n devastating withdrawal from Afghanistan. He had no foreign policy capital to "start" the war with Russia. He cowered to Putin the first two yrs n showed all his cards. He wouldn't even allow Poland to send MIGs. His foreign policy has been some of the weakest crap I ever saw. He acted as tho he could not waver from Trump's deal with the Taliban. So I think saying we started this war is inaccurate, however our dealings with Putin prior, Blinking telling Putin that Ukraine not joining NATO was a non starter. Wtf did he think would happen? He will surely go down as probably the worst Secretary ever. What made matters worse was Biden not asking, but threatening China, if they help Putin. Not getting back into the Iran deal as promised was another dumb move imo. Essentially Biden pushed the them n Putin into each other's arms, and pushed Saudi Arabia and Egypt into joining BRICS over Israel. The worst Chess game ever. He has lit up the globe and now even Spain has gone against us, and we have lost our standing. You're looking at blunder after blunder from the Chief Blunderer that didnt know what state he was in 4 yrs ago. Putin saw an opportunity to annex more of Ukraine and he expected it to take a week. Period. He is no different than the US. He wants to be king of the world and take as much as he can. Ukraine is filled with resources and has a warm climate with beautiful beaches where he can make tons from tourism-something the mother land doesn't have. Also Ukraine and Georgia can't be in NATO bc of contested borders. He took Ukraine out of the running in 2014, tho back then Ukraine was not interested, however they did want to be in the EU, so Putin saw Ukraine slipping away forever after the EuroMaiden and "alleged coup" n made his move. Biden also has essentially given the wheel to Netanyahu as Commander In Chief so he makes all the calls, and allowed Ukraine to be cast by the wayside while we supply Israel billions n billions. Tho Biden's slow trickle of weapons early on, weapons arriving /r typically 6mos to a year too late destroyed Ukraine's hope of a counteroffensive spring of year two. Ukraine has been at our mercy all along. All the $ we spend on military, plus Europe, yet Ukraine was always outnumbered 10:1 in arms. We did Ukraine dirty since we convinced them to give their nukes to Russia. We have always feared Russia. I'd be completely shocked if it ever came out that we intended this war that has turned into a war of attrition. Putin waiting for the $$ to dry up for Ukraine. Also, when your entire border is surrounded by your enemy neighbor's tanks, and they attack you, they started the war.
      -Mel

    Mearsheimer takes it as given that "Americans are Americans", "Russians are Russians", "Chinese are Chinese," etc.. This is a rather old school, dare I say "rac*st", way of looking at the prospects for humaniity. "Race", as simple reading of Wikipedia will inform you, is a social construct. As is "culture". Race is an assortment of individual traits (hair type, eye shape, etc.) that, in aggregate combined with culture, _appears_ to be evidence of "race". Culture is similar. The USS Enterprise of Star Trek will not have a Russian, a Japanese, a Scott, etc.. It's going to have _individuals_ with no discernible modern day "racial" background. Let's work on that. Invite Chinese to America and hope they stay and start a family with Americans. And similarly for Americans looking for something new in China, and in Europe, and in Africa, etc.. Travel and communication make this inevitable. The sooner we can help it along, the less bloodshed and misery we will have to endure getting there.

      @@willarddu This is a _choice_ you are making as I am presuming either a 1st or 2nd generation person from China. For your children and even more so their children there will be no such choice to make. They won't _choose_ to embody this American aspect or that Chinese aspect. They will simply _be_ this or that Chinese or American aspect. Which aspects from which culture survive the "generational cut" remains to be seen. Nature usually makes the right decision. As someone whose ancestors were Irish and Portuguese, I can attest that I don't identify with either of them.

      Want it and getting it is entirely different thing. Also, you can't be sovereign joining NATO or EU. That's opposite to a sovereign unfortunately. What is also unfortunate Ukrainians are stupid people governed by corrupt elites and this is a reason they are getting murdered
