Because of your wonderful film here, in September 2018 I bought one of the very rare K1600 Grand Americas in Austin Yellow in the UK. I already had a Harley Touring CVO so I was curious to see how they compared. Grand America: amazing 6-cylinder engine - the best on the market by far; the handling and agility are beyond belief and such fun. But fast motorway cruising isn’t: the bike is just too nervous and sensitive to side winds and is subsequently limited to 106mph. The 2 Harley CVOs I’ve had in the last 2 years, by comparison, would trade a cylinder to have some of the dart and the flex of the transverse, heavily-inclined 6. But on a long tour on fast, long curves? No competition: surprisingly the Harleys are rock-solid, no matter Wind nor rain. Much better luggage loading capacity as well. So, in August of this strange year, I sold the K1600 GA. And now I’m already looking at brochures of a 2021 one ... Cheers, Mates!

Nice review. Like the Honda ST1300 which also had a high speed instability that was caused by the Honda euro top case this bike may have the same issue. The case was not sold in the US for this reason but could be imported. I had this case on my ST1300. There were several unexplained high speed accidents in Europe. Honda put vortex generators on the sides of the cases to try to make the air less turbulent behind the bike. I never explored this high speed region because I didn't want to prove this theory as correct. As an aerospace engineer I believe this large top box is the reason for the instability and limiting the speed was a less expensive solution than doing many wind tunnel tests.
Traditonally when adding luggage to your bike you need to consider the handling. I used to have an r 100 in the eighties. It had 35 litre krauser panniers. The recommended top speed with loaded panniers was if I remember correctly 85 mph.
Fantastic video. You answered my question...I am in the market for a bagger, tourer, one of those and have seen the K16B GA, the Yamaha Star Eluder and the HD Road Glide Special. My preference as a BMW R1200GSA owner was the BMW, but DEAL BRAKER is the speed limiter due to the instability of this bike...how is it possible, such a MASTER PEACE with this issue... I will continue shopping...I cannot live with instability at 100 MPH. Thanks for the great video. LCL
We can’t say the Grand America is a streamlined K1600 GTL because it’s speed restricted. The GTL is a rocket ship with unrestricted speed. We can say the Grand America looks nice. But never to be confused with a GTL.
Decent review of the bike and I agree with the speed limit being a shame with that engine. Seems odd it would be such an issue with the top case when the standard GTL doesn't have that problem. One thing I would have liked to have seen is the size of the top case itself. That is one of the main differences between this bike and the standard K1600B, but you didn't show it to us at all.
Great Ride footage and Review - Interesting info on stability, 100mph - how could BMW engineer something so amazing with such a shortcoming?! My R1200GS is perfectly stable passing and clipping 120 in the process... Much thanks for your excellent reviews!
Exactly, I do 120 and did 130 sometimes on my fully loaded R1200GSA (3 boxes) and sweet it is...Too bad this FLAW on the K16B GA, I was just about to buy one...but, I disconnected now! Cheers. LCL
Hi there, thx for the nice motorcycle reviews and keep going always interesting to watch your reviews. I would like to know what is your pans brand on this motor review?
Always a fair review on all marques, can't say more than that. I would say the other half would be happy with the top speed limit! :-) Triumph Tiger 1200 is limited to 80MPH/130KMH with luggage (from the manual, not saying it is unstable) so it is not that unusual.
@@osamabinladen824 What is hard to understand my post says clearly, K1600B. to repeat, "The K1600B is speed limited to 130mph, personally tested by me."
@@flyingdog1498 Actually, I'm still confused about Grand America. It's still a B (Bagger) right but beautified? K1600GTL, K1600B. Or is the Grand America on a different scheme? The only apparent difference of Grand America for me is it's unforgivable speed limiter.
@@osamabinladen824 Grand American is a K1600GA, and that is exactly what I said, the B is limited to 130mph/208kph, the GA is limited to 100mph. Try a Honda GROM.
I own the k1600b (not the grand America) and I have taken my bike to the limiter at 250kph. 100% stable. The reason is the grand America becomes unstable because of the rear top box.
@@flyingdog1498 you, not my friend should try calling me a liar on my face. I live in south Africa, and yes on the bike speedo I have ridden my bagger to an indicated 250kph. @@zunaidkajee4540As I clearly stated in my Post I too own a K1600B. The only thing that stands out is the bike looks amazing and then there is that trunk. It stands out like a sore thumb like it was added after the bike look was designed and then they tried to make the trunk fit the look. Take the trunk off and you have a pretty nice looking bike.
Top speed limit was a factor in not getting this bike. I went with the 2018 Honda Goldwing. They also restricted top speed, but I get 112-115 there. Not that I want that speed all the time, but I want a safety factor in passing on the highway. The GW does not seem unstable at that speed. So, I think it was limited for warrantee sake.
Thank you for your honest review! Most every review of the k1600 B and the Grand America is just fluff. You opened my eyes a bit. I was not aware they limited top speed on the GA. My 2017 Harley Road Glide is limited to about 110. I was seriously looking at this for my next ride, maybe not now.
Correct, the GoldWing is limited to 112mph. However, if topspeed is an issue, just pick the GT or GTL version that run around 155mph. Try that on your Wing..
FLOB32 not that I have a dog in the fight the difference between 100 and 112 doesn't look big until you need to pass on road with 85mph speed limit. But the question is the limit is due to stability issues.. how it will behave on metal bridges? construction zone gravel?
Why does it make a difference, when you want to pass with a 85mph speed limit? Both bikes do 85mph..Regarding the stability-question: The K1600GT(L) doesn't have any issues in terms of topspeed-stability and is "Autobahn-approved". Therefore I can't understand the reason for the limit on the Grand America, since it's more or less the same bike. And Honda is known for weird decisions like that, I don't question them anymore. Probably they just think that 112mph is enough and that's it.However: Since I live in Germany, I would never buy a bike in that price-category and with that amount of power, that is limited to 100 or 112mph. So both bikes are a no-go for me. The GW would still have a chance, if they wouldn't be so dumb to exclude traction-control for the GL 1800.. Then again: Honda and it's weird decisions.. ;)
FLOB32 tires (or tyres) main reason GW is limited to 112. US is main GW market and Honda has to play by rules. With regards to passing 112-85=27, 100-85=15, almost a double. Makes difference when space is tight and passing zone short. With regards to Germans and BMW: at the Dempster entry gas station we had a German tourist saying to my friend in broken English: "B-M-V goot.. Harley bad!". Silly he had never had to bleed servo pump on RT. Or fight to get forks fixed on GS. BMW has good engineers but it is not like they are infallible and their products tend to be overengineered and not easy to work on. Now I would really like to understand why they decided to limit this bike to 100mph. Is it for US market? Most of the time it is done either to save money on tire or to reduce liability, if there's an issue with stability or tire speed/load. Maybe they felt that tire can blow at max load and speed 105mph, who knows
Can't argue with that speed difference for overtaking. However, both is too slow (for me). Aren't there any tires, that can do more than 112 on the GW? This year, 15.000 GW go to USA, only 350 go to Germany. Impossible to get a test ride.. :(BMW may seem a bit overengineered, but I never had a problem on my beamers. On the other hand, I never had a problem with my Harley or Honda, as well.I will discuss the speedlimit-topic with my dealer, next time I'm there. I'm curious, too, why they did the 100mph-limit on that bike. Tires can't be the issue since there are tires with enough load-capacity that are capable to do 160mph and more..
Had my K1600B SLE since last Aug cant fault it perfect machine and 4200 miles on it as far as top speed goes ? so what the UK limit is 70mph :) but trust me the odd time I scooted past slower traffic on mine its rock solid ! The Grand America is just a B with a top case (a option that takes hours to take off) I checked but still a nice machine great video top marks :)

i would never buy a grand america because it is unstable,if you have to throttle it to 110 mph i own a K1600GT and it rocks...so I will get a Bagger now :)
100 mph limiting is a deal breaker for me. I'll take my 28,000 bucks over to Honda or Yamaha where they really understand how to build a bike for the road, and they don't break down like the BMW does.
Ive had 3 BMW's, i currently own a hd road king. Bmw are far superior, and cheaper, but the bmw services will devastate you, Way more then Harley Davidson services...
Might as well buy a car then, because even a half decent car made in 2018 can reach 120mph with ease. And it would be a lot cheaper too. Any motorcycle with such an engine that is factory limited to 100mph is a massive waste of money and potential.

Love that bike! And here in the U.S. we generally average highway speeds between 70 to 80 mph. Great video!
Thank you for a good honest review
Traditonally when adding luggage to your bike you need to consider the handling. I used to have an r 100 in the eighties. It had 35 litre krauser panniers. The recommended top speed with loaded panniers was if I remember correctly 85 mph.

So is it stable up to 100mph. Good video by the way
Only thing I can think... "I LIKE! VERY NICE!" great vid beautiful bike!
Was he shifting without squeezing the clutch?
Lol are you new to motor biking?
Does it weave or wobble at high-speed ride?? I've read from MCN saying is weave instability at speed. Thank you
Fantastic video.

We can’t say the Grand America is a streamlined K1600 GTL because it’s speed restricted. The GTL is a rocket ship with unrestricted speed. We can say the Grand America looks nice. But never to be confused with a GTL.
Very nice review. Which country do you film your videos?
I was gonna get the new 1200 gsa rally each I have a older model, but I’m going with this one
But it has a speed limiter?
GREAT REVIEWS....LIKE THE PRESENTATION STYLE !
Credibility. Entertaining. I believe what you say and enjoy watching. As always, thumbs up.
I had the K1600.......best road bike ever! Those bags must throw the bike off at high speed.
It's a two-full face helmets topcase, just as the one on the GTL
You can disable the speed limiter.
Your videos are awesome !!! Thank you !
Thank you
Cool presentation of on the best in the World. What kind of sunglasses you have ?.
UNREAL! The dealer I talked to today never mentioned that 100 mph "thing"....
Get the B 130mph.
I would like to know what is your pans brand on this motor review?
john doe stroker cargo pans?
Your videos are very informative
great video, I own an Indian and thinking to may be switch to BMW K1600 Grand America
Always a fair review on all marques, can't say more than that. I would say the other half would be happy with the top speed limit! :-) Triumph Tiger 1200 is limited to 80MPH/130KMH with luggage (from the manual, not saying it is unstable) so it is not that unusual.
Thanks.
I was very interested in the Grand America until I found out about the governor set at 100 mph What a deal breaker
The K1600B is speed limited to 130mph, personally tested by me.
@@flyingdog1498 The Grand America or the regular one?

Great review and nice footage. Thanks for also spending time to discuss the top speed limit, which is indeed a travesty for such an awesome machine.
I own the k1600b (not the grand America) and I have taken my bike to the limiter at 250kph. 100% stable. The reason is the grand America becomes unstable because of the rear top box.
You my friend are a liar. K1600B is limited yo 130+- but stable as a rock at the speed even in the turbulence passing semis.
@@flyingdog1498 you, not my friend should try calling me a liar on my face. I live in south Africa, and yes on the bike speedo I have ridden my bagger to an indicated 250kph. It might not be the true speed, but indicated. Have you thought that different markets might have different speed limits? I generally cruise at 200kph all the time. I have videos up on you tube indicating 230kph.
Do you own a bagger? Have you ridden one and if so what is the max speed did you manage to ride?
@@zunaidkajee4540As I clearly stated in my Post I too own a K1600B. Excellent review, thanks
The only thing that stands out is the bike looks amazing and then there is that trunk. It stands out like a sore thumb like it was added after the bike look was designed and then they tried to make the trunk fit the look. Take the trunk off and you have a pretty nice looking bike.
Take the trunk off and you have a K1600B. Your choice IS available...
You should explain to us mor about the stabiliy problem, i’m planing to buy this bike but you scared me!
Hey buddy I subscribed your channel for your great review!
You are having way too much fun!

Can I get it with a turbo?
I was hoping for the beech but ended up with this shitty weather🤣🤣 love it !
Goldwing isn't limited to 100mph..
Both bikes do 85mph..Regarding the stability-question:
The K1600GT(L) doesn't have any issues in terms of topspeed-stability and is "Autobahn-approved".
My bmw1200Lt would do 135mph, it was very fast, i cant imagine how fast that would be!
I own a K1600B and there is no hint of instability up to the 210km/h limiter
Thumbs up for your review but thumbs down for 100mph speed limit for a motorcycle like this

It's sure brings a smile on a bikers face to try out such a machine .
Loved riding the world famos US Highway 129 -The Dragon on it and hitting them curbes 🏍
For me i'm a tall guy -
The hight of the bike is a plus.
The top box is good and big.
It has a lot of gismo's,
maybe 2much for my taste.
Love em brakes, but the seating and riding posistion is poor for me. My lower back was complaning a lot after few hours rides..
Its posseble that a simple backrest could fix my backache !
What is could not fix is how top heavy the K1600 is at low speed and when moving it a round in general @ 0-speed.
It maid me feel like i was allways
struggling with it.
It bug's me !
I could live with but never like it
All and all a fun and good try out
But me... I will stick with my beloved Honda St 1300
Still best sport tourer

Guys is the top case removable or not ? Even bmw dealers don’t know now and cannot answer

I mean, there s a way to do it, but it wasn't designed to be removed

If you’re concerned about dealer network, you’re better off with Honda than BMW as your second choice. If you figure in reliability and cost of maintenance, Honda is a no -brainer.

Wow...
How come the driver does not have a backrest? It's absurd.
Ive had 3 BMW's, i currently own a hd road king. Bmw are far superior, and cheaper, but the bmw services will devastate you, Way more then Harley Davidson services...
Cheaper? LOL
I don't care about the speed limit, i rarely go above 70-75mph...
Probably suits the American market but looks way out of place in Europe. Looks like a giant scooter. Nice video though. Well done.
Well, they didn't name it Europa Grande now did they?
I think BMW is right with it's opinion on the American cruising style. that's no bike for speeding

what, 100 mph is not enough? For -that- type of bike I'd argue 100 mph is PLENTY fast.
Might as well buy a car then, because even a half decent car made in 2018 can reach 120mph with ease. And it would be a lot cheaper too.
Any motorcycle with such an engine that is factory limited to 100mph is a massive waste of money and potential.
Only if you are riding on the race track, otherwise it is just silly, un-necessary, dangerous and stupid
@@Mutrino
Trust me, taking on couple of hundred miles of straight freeway at 100mph only is a pain in the ass. Then you'd wish you had more.
Besides, we all grew out of our nanny years a long time ago. Nobody likes to be told what they can and can't do for their 'safety' because we also know the government doesn't really give a shit about our safety.
If YOU find 100mph sufficient, then don't twist the throttle past 100mph. Simple, isn't it? Why should everybody else be forced to do 100mph just because you find higher speeds "unnecessary, dangerous and stupid"? That seems awfully selfish of you.
