Miss Honeys house is very different from the book. The main difference being that there is literally nothing in there besides a small camping stove, and two wooden boxes. Matilda didn't decide to help her just to get justice for Miss Honeys father. She also did it because Miss Honey needed serious help. There's a whole bit that mentions that the Trunchbull told her that now that she's an adult, she has to start paying her back for everything she did for her. The only money she had was a pound a week. The Trunchbull made her sign a paper that would redirect all of her paycheck directly into her bank. ...only now do I realize in all likelihood the Trunchbull did that because the fathers will was ironclad, in that Miss Honey got everything after he passed, and she couldn't touch it. So she stole Miss Honeys salary.

Another big difference from the book: at the end of the book, Matilda actually does lose her abilities. But that all stopped once she was transferred to a higher, more appropriate grade, because now for the first time in her life, she's actually struggling, instead of having her smarts go to waste.

The cake scene: obviously the kid didn't actually eat all of it, but he still did have to eat a lot of it. In fact after they finally finished, he got sick to his stomach. I think what they basically did was have 4 to 5 different cakes, each with more cake missing, to make it look like he'd been eating it.

Loved this movie as a kid. The early - mid 90s were the best era for kids movies. If you haven't seen My Girl or The Sandlot, you're missing out for kids movies. They're absolute classics that really understand kid logic.
Klasky Csupo productions could've made a comeback if they used what's left of Roald Dahl's children books. Doesn't have to be a movie but a short series😁
I think I loved Matilda because it showed me that adults aren't always right, the principle got her comeuppance and Matilda and miss Honey got a happy ending. Edit: and because I loved books and reading and used reading as a way to escape abusive family members too.
Fun fact: the actress that plays Ms. Trunchbull also plays Mr. Dursley’s rude sister in Harry Potter and the Prisioner of Azkaban. She’s the aunt that gets blown up like a balloon in the beginning of the movie, the one with the bulldog.
The comfort is in seeing children rise above abuse. I was basically bullied in school and seeing a kid find a way to bring justice to those around her doing wrong to others on her own after trying to involve others and she Won.
I used to have a math teacher that gave me nightmares, she was borderline mentally abusive. Luckily she retired after one year, and the math teacher that came as her replacement was my all-time favorite, best teacher ever. I started liking math for real thanks to him. :D
Hey Billy, I happen to work in libraries and have some answers for you. Why does no one question Matilda? It's part of our privacy policy, we don't ask for personal info unless needed. Our job is to help people navigate their information needs regardless of age or interest. When it comes to children we acknowledge their right for privacy and freedom to learn, independent from that of their parents. In fact, I have not seen or met the parents of over half the children I interact with.
Can we talk about the backstage MVP here. These librarian woman who encouraged her love for reading and even suggested that she get a library card so she can read from the safety of her home. I hope she didn't pass in the film. We don't see her again bedside that scene
First off: at the time they filmed this, they actually were husband and wife. So what they did for the hat scene was put on a harness under the suit he's wearing, that connects to the hat, so when she tries to pull it off, he's holding it on with his whole body. So when you see her cutting the hat off in the next scene, she's actually cutting the wires from the harness off of the hat. The shot of the mom backflipping off the table wasn't her, it was a stunt double. And as for the cream tarts, what they did was set up miniature catapult seesaws, put a tart on one end on them, and essentially send them flying.
2:39 "Send Me On My Way" is living rent-free in my head because the first Ice Age movie put it there, and its place in my head was just cemented with Matilda as well. I watched both of these movies on repeat as a child, so there's why. It totally deserves it, though, it's a great road trip song!
Fun fact: Roald Dahl, writer of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory (book) wrote the book version of Matilda (yes. It was a picture book. I was surprised as well)
You should try watching The Witches (1990 version) It’s also based on a Dahl book. So is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Dahl wrote in a way that was scary but really satisfying for kids to read. It showed that kids have a lot of power, even if they’re frightened.
In the book, it explains that Miss Phelps (the librarian) thought about talking to the Wormwoods, but eventually decided she didn't want to get involved, it wasn't her business. The way a lot of people feel when casually noticing abuse. In the musical, every time Miss Phelps brings up her family, Matilda either lies or changes the subject.
Tbh I think her being adopted would make more sense. There ain’t no way that Mathilda’s mom would leave the hospital looking like that after she just gave birth
Are you REALLY a fan if you never tried to manifest telekinetic powers to be like miss ma'am? On another note, I give that "I'm big, you're little" speech to any and everyone who can hear 😂
This was my favorite movie as a kid mainly because I liked reading as much as Matilda and would have to bring multiple bags to carry out all the books I checked out from the library lol
My nephews dad screamed at my nephew because he bought a book in Spanish so that his dad (only speaks Spanish) child read to him. He then screamed at him for having books at all. My sister and him are divorced. Thank goodness. When we found out, she filed for full custody of the kids. The kids have a good support system with their aunts, uncles, and grandparents. For example my husband reads with him, writes music with him, and told him he can teach him to dance like MJ like him. Also I grew up with a narcissist mom who was broken because of her up bringing. my sister, brother and I got therapy and promised to try to have our kids have a better future. I know you didn't ask but this movie helped us get over some of the rough times. 🧡
As a little girl I wanted so bad to be Matilda(those psychic powers never came in sadly) so I gotta say... How dare you put this out on a day I can't watch it lol 😆 I'm gonna come back to give you my view later but I'll drop the like now, hate to miss out on the live chat. Billy when are we gonna do Carrie (1976)? #bingers That's just like this film, with a few small differences 😈
I think the reason kids love this movie so much- I know I did- is that it gives us something evil to stand against that’s not based on misunderstandings like most school stories. People want to see a full hero’s tale with a villain they love to hate, most little kids find it harder to appreciate stories with more than one side to things.
This author also wrote James and the Giant Peach. James lived with two abusive aunts. They were killed by the peach 🍑. We love stories like this as children. We love tales that reek with gore. We love extremes of good and bad behavior because it’s easy to recognize as children. We love evil characters because they always get what they deserve. The goodies always get rewarded.
Are we not gonna talk about Billy saying: “I can make her make the Winnie the Pooh noise. OoooOOOhhh” And the “They bouta’ run a choo choo🎶” I screamed!😭😭😭😭 Pirates of the Caribbean #Bingers
I loved the book and the movie “Matilda” when I was a kid. I looked up to Matilda, and I still do. I was inspired by her intelligence, love for reading, and telekinetic powers (who doesn’t want that?). I wanted to be smart like her and fight injustice as she did. Plus, Miss Honey is one of my educational inspirations.
5:52 She did and Matilda told her her parents don't really care what she does, but Mrs phelps just decided that it was best not to get involved with other peoples children. I think that's why she suggested that Matilda get a library card so that she wouldn't have to cross a busy high way and crowded streets by herself every day, guess she figured that would be safer for her. Of course the counterargument would be that if Matilda continues to go to the library every day she'll be under constant adult supervision
25:48 I’ve been to that house, it’s used a lot in movies like Hocus Pocus and Scream 2. It’s in California (Pasadena I think?) But it’s behind a fence.
I feel like Ronald Dahl and Don Bluth exist on the same creative beliefs. Don Bluth said something along the lines of you can show children the worst sides of life in media as long as it ends in a happy ending. Ronald Dahl’s books always feel that way to me.
Man, you said you never saw anyone so upset about someone reading a book.... when I was 13 my friend's mother PROHIBIRED her to read, I remember when she told my mum that my friend was reading too much... That was also the end of our friendship cause I'd lend her some of my books and her mother found out 🤡👍 There are so many crazy people out there, believe me
In the books, they mentioned that their parents never do anything because they don't believe them. That's why Ms Trunchbull makes her punishments ad insane as possible
I truly connected with this film when i was a little girl. i experienced bullying in school and neglect at home so reading all kinds of books helped me overcome all the bad stuff happening around me, and I actually had a superpower which was my memory. I could easily memorize an entire book after reading it twice. Teachers chose me to give speeches all the time and i received a lot of diplomas for being a top student. Sadly, i lost my fantastic memory during high school, and reading became a task more than a fun activity. I still read a lot but can't retain new information. It's a shame. 🥺
When I ran away from home, I was taken in by a mentor from high school. After I graduated I lived with a teacher who helped me get out of the abusive household I lived in. Thanks to people like them I have a better life. Thank God for amazing teachers and mentors. 🧡
Loved this movie as a child don't think I have seen it as an adult. The songs are bops. Newborn everyone is born but we are not all the same we are unique in our in way good and sometimes bad which makes us all special . Thanx for doing this Billy enjoy 💕🧡
I’ve been at the library every day for the last 10+ years. But then, I am a librarian. 😁😂 The “you are not alone” quote from this book/movie is in my work email signature. And yeah, if our staff saw the same little kid every day with no parents / caregivers we would probably ask some questions. Shoutout to all my fellow book readers out there! 📚📚📚❤️ Keep doing what you do, Billy! It’s great and so much fun to watch.
Kids movies in the 80s and 90s seemed to always painted adults as either evil or incompetent, but always had one exception who was decent to the kids. Miss Honey, in this case.
We watched this film as little kids so our parents could point to Matilda’s parents and Miss Trunchbull and say “you could have it worse” when we 90s kids were being little brats and had to be chastised. 😝
As a parent anytime i buy myself a snack or candy my daughter can’t have I always say “much too good for children in my head” lol 😂 also “you wanted cake you got cake now eat it” anytime someone does something Ik isn’t going to work out 😂
My first grade teacher was a nightmare. We could only go to the bathroom during recess, she always yelled at us, and I felt like she hated me. Actually, my 2nd grade teacher was awful too. I remember it vividly: I was trying to spell “said” but kept putting “sayed”. We had to turn in the paper to go to recess. She looked at my paper, and told me it was wrong and to change it. She never corrected me. So I kept doing it again wrong and giving it back, and she said “No. Do it again.” I don’t remember how many times I did it until I got it right. Once she also shamed me in front of the whole class because she was giving out paper for coloring, and it was all different colors(they were darkish colored paper, blue, purple, green etc). She was going around asking each student what color they wanted. I remember thinking, if I get a colored paper, anything I draw won’t stand out as nicely as on a light colored paper. So when she got to me, I asked for peach. She said “PEACH?! You get nothing.” And she went on giving everyone else their papers. She eventually gave me a white piece of paper, but since then I fucking hated her.
I vividly remember as a child having to leave the room anytime this film was on. miss trunchbull & the chokey scared me SO much. I only saw the film all the way through as an adult bc I was too scared before😭
Hey Billy, just wanted to say that you're videos just keep getting better and better. The editing, the background, the cartoon at the beginning. These little details are bringing you to the top. Quick fast and in a hurry. Much love
I had an "educator" in high school that I was terrified of. It seemed like every year she had a new position, so no matter my year she was around. She was a muscular white woman who refused to wear sleeves. She once made the entire senior class spend the night doing boot camp in our gym. We all wanted to rebel but... like... her arms.
My teachers or principals werent necessarily mean but they definitely overreacted. My principal in middle school punished me when I was the one that got beat up and made to bleed. I was suspended in-school which basically meant I had an all day study hall for three days and I wasnt allowed to socialize. I didnt do anything.
I love this movie , i was always obsessed with growing up from home, school and nights at the hostpial. Matilda , madeline, stuart little, annie with coral burnett, old yellower and go go gadget.
When I was a kid I didn't get the "whoever painted that must've had a strong stomach" line. I just thought the person painted it while holding the canvas with their stomach lol
You've never seen someone get in trouble for reading? Lol i was so antisocial as a kid all i did was read. During summer break my mom came into my room, took my book, shoved me outside, and locked the door. 😂😂😂 I was also the kid that would try to read books when we went out to eat too.
Acclaimed Flop: The movie was not a box office success, but was received very well by critics and audiences for staying true to the book. It gained a bigger audience on video and on television.
I lived in fear of my elementary school principal. It was a Catholic school. We all did. She wasn't Ms. Trunchbull bad but it wasn't that far off. Even the parents couldn't stand her but she was a nun so she got away with a lot.
Approval of God: Notably one of the few adaptations of his work the Dahl Estate ever approved of, as getting the approval of his widow was necessary just to get the movie made. She loved the script to the point of not even having any notes or changes.
Personally, I loved this movie because: 1- when I first saw it, I was Matilda's age and loved to read. 2- I thought her powers were just too cool! 3- I wanted to grow up and be a teacher like Ms. Honey because I've always loved kids....skip to present day and I am Ms. Honey to my preschoolers. 4- I've always been a fan of Danny Devitto. Fun Fact: My sixth grade Reading teacher is related by marriage to Ronald Dahl who wrote Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate, James and the Giant Peach, etc. You can imagine just how excited and shocked I was to hear that my first day in my homeroom and first class of middle school lol

I have to admit I was looking for this too.
i thought it as a kid for while too
Loved this movie as a kid. The early - mid 90s were the best era for kids movies. If you haven't seen My Girl or The Sandlot, you're missing out for kids movies. They're absolute classics that really understand kid logic.
Oh god those two films are nostalgia that will hit you in the gut and heart. Especially My Girl I can only watch that movie once every five years.
Ooh. My Girl. You have to watch that one. #bingers
@@NoThankUBeQuiet the 2 movies mentioned were made in the 90's ,pal
Miss Pam cant catch a break with these magic kids😂🙈
The comfort is in seeing children rise above abuse. I was basically bullied in school and seeing a kid find a way to bring justice to those around her doing wrong to others on her own after trying to involve others and she Won.
"When I was a little CHILDREN" Billy, how many were you? There was only ONE of me when I was little
🤣🤣🤣
He’s jokin babes😂
Well that is a very interesting fact! Wow I understand now.
yea children are people too
“your mommy is A TWIT” 😂i’m sorry but that line and how she delivers it is hilarious
I was surprised as well)
You didn’t know?😭
Can you do the Parent Trap? Every time I see Matilda I immediately remember of the Parent Trap, they go hand in hand in my mind haha #Bingers
They really did a great job with Miss Trunchbull. She looks exactly like the illustration in the book.
You should try watching The Witches (1990 version) It’s also based on a Dahl book. So is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Dahl wrote in a way that was scary but really satisfying for kids to read. It showed that kids have a lot of power, even if they’re frightened.
and so is James and the Giant Peach took me years to figure out that was NOT a Tim Burton film lol
Matilda wasn’t adopted by the parents at the beginning , they gave birth to her.
Tbh I think her being adopted would make more sense. There ain’t no way that Mathilda’s mom would leave the hospital looking like that after she just gave birth
@@shylilkitten88 I was fully dressed in jeans the day after I gave birth. Also went shopping for dinner same day I was released from the hospital.
@@shylilkitten88 but then why adopt her in the first place if they clearly didn’t want her? (And then adopt her out to someone else?)
@@Miyanoai14 they give monthly money to the parents to take care of the child. They might have taken the money and neglected Matilda
Are you REALLY a fan if you never tried to manifest telekinetic powers to be like miss ma'am?
On another note, I give that "I'm big, you're little" speech to any and everyone who can hear 😂
The way I tried to move things with my mind like Matilda when I was a little children. I really thought I was going to activate my powers
'Matilda' was like the PG-rated children's comedic version of 'Carrie.'
Mrs trunchbull being Carries Mom and her closet is the chokey
This was my favorite movie as a kid mainly because I liked reading as much as Matilda and would have to bring multiple bags to carry out all the books I checked out from the library lol
Same 😊 fellow book worm here 😀
I am a bookworm as well, when I have time. Lately all the books I've been reading have lots of pictures and not so much story.
Sameee I was constantly reading in class and wanted to work in the library so bad as a teen lol
All of Roald Dahl stories are pretty much horror. Wonka has the same formula of a Slasher film and even has the crazy guy who warns you.
Same lol and yes to Carrie! ❤
YESS CARRIE PLEASE
Yesss! I was hoping someone would suggest it!!
Yess Carrie
Are we not gonna talk about Billy saying:
“I can make her make the Winnie the Pooh noise. OoooOOOhhh”
And the “They bouta’ run a choo choo🎶”
I screamed!😭😭😭😭
Pirates of the Caribbean #Bingers
I loved the book and the movie “Matilda” when I was a kid. I looked up to Matilda, and I still do. I was inspired by her intelligence, love for reading, and telekinetic powers (who doesn’t want that?). I wanted to be smart like her and fight injustice as she did. Plus, Miss Honey is one of my educational inspirations.
Matilda is a witch
5:52 She did and Matilda told her her parents don't really care what she does, but Mrs phelps just decided that it was best not to get involved with other peoples children. I think that's why she suggested that Matilda get a library card so that she wouldn't have to cross a busy high way and crowded streets by herself every day, guess she figured that would be safer for her. Of course the counterargument would be that if Matilda continues to go to the library every day she'll be under constant adult supervision
billy saying “when I was a little children” throughout the whole video is so funny to me loll
I loved this movie as a kid and I still do. It’s kind of scarier than kids movies that come out now, I must have become jaded lol
This movie had little me stressed. Could feel the trauma through my tv like dang lol
Drinking game: take a shot every time billy says “little children”
Easy there, Satan. No need to burst people’s bladders. 🙃
Loved this movie as a child don't think I have seen it as an adult. The songs are bops. Newborn everyone is born but we are not all the same we are unique in our in way good and sometimes bad which makes us all special . Thanx for doing this Billy enjoy 💕🧡
Ms Trunchball also played the fat, mean aunt in Harry Potter, that Harry blew up and she floated away.
😁😁😁
Kids movies in the 80s and 90s seemed to always painted adults as either evil or incompetent, but always had one exception who was decent to the kids. Miss Honey, in this case.
We watched this film as little kids so our parents could point to Matilda’s parents and Miss Trunchbull and say “you could have it worse” when we 90s kids were being little brats and had to be chastised. 😝
That cake scene HAUNTS me to this day and I’m 30 and saw this as a child.
I'm sorry that happened to you
I vividly remember as a child having to leave the room anytime this film was on. miss trunchbull & the chokey scared me SO much. I only saw the film all the way through as an adult bc I was too scared before😭
"He called that girl Malinda" like you wouldn't have called her that too at some point
Leave me alone 😂
Lmao, but when you just be knowin everyone it's kinda hard to remember names
Fun fact: Pam Ferris (Miss Trunchbull) also played Aunt Marge in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban."
This movie and Charmed had my 10-year old-self walking around squinting at everything trying to move things with my mind.
Hey Billy, just wanted to say that you're videos just keep getting better and better. The editing, the background, the cartoon at the beginning. These little details are bringing you to the top. Quick fast and in a hurry. Much love
Thank you so much this means a lot ❤️
I had an "educator" in high school that I was terrified of. It seemed like every year she had a new position, so no matter my year she was around. She was a muscular white woman who refused to wear sleeves. She once made the entire senior class spend the night doing boot camp in our gym. We all wanted to rebel but... like... her arms.
Another Fun Fact: Ms Trunchbull is Harry's auntie that he blew up in the 3rd movie.
My teachers or principals werent necessarily mean but they definitely overreacted. My principal in middle school punished me when I was the one that got beat up and made to bleed. I was suspended in-school which basically meant I had an all day study hall for three days and I wasnt allowed to socialize. I didnt do anything.
Awwww im so glad you decided to watch this it holds a special place in my heart ❤️
I love this movie , i was always obsessed with growing up from home, school and nights at the hostpial.
Matilda , madeline, stuart little, annie with coral burnett, old yellower and go go gadget.
Finally I’ve been requesting this for months
I went to the library today. As a nanny, I try to turn every one of my kids into little Matildas 🤣 but without the abuse and neglect.
This movie scared me so badly as a kid but I still loved it
I rewatched this recently and I was like damn I forgot how dark this is 😂. I watched it loads as a kid..i wanted her powers so much
When I was a kid I didn't get the "whoever painted that must've had a strong stomach" line. I just thought the person painted it while holding the canvas with their stomach lol
lool. Matilda wasn't adopted in that first scene, it was her coming home from the hospital
me: *washing the dishes while watching*
billie: go drink the water
me: *drink the dish water*
You've never seen someone get in trouble for reading? Lol i was so antisocial as a kid all i did was read. During summer break my mom came into my room, took my book, shoved me outside, and locked the door. 😂😂😂
I was also the kid that would try to read books when we went out to eat too.
Acclaimed Flop: The movie was not a box office success, but was received very well by critics and audiences for staying true to the book. It gained a bigger audience on video and on television.
I purposely say "as a little children" instead of 'little kid' bc it annoys the mess out of my hubby 😅😅😅
Why you do my guy like that? 😂
“ And go brush ya teeth too. I know you didn’t,ya nasty you just got out of bed with ya crusty mouth” GOT ME ROLLING ON THE FLOOR💅💅💅💅💅💅💅💅
This one never gets old. Always a good watch. 💕
Btw love the shirt!
Your intro warmed my heart today, felt extra genuine
this is the first time I've ever watched with water.... usually I just yell "NO" at you when you tell me to drink water.
I lived in fear of my elementary school principal. It was a Catholic school. We all did. She wasn't Ms. Trunchbull bad but it wasn't that far off. Even the parents couldn't stand her but she was a nun so she got away with a lot.
She isnt adopted, as far as I know. That is their actual flesh in blood in the story.
Yeah I really thought see was adopted 😂
The parents didn’t adopt Matilda I’m pretty sure those are her biological parents 😭😭
Spent the first three minutes going: that's their natural-born baby, not adopted! This was very fun.
Approval of God: Notably one of the few adaptations of his work the Dahl Estate ever approved of, as getting the approval of his widow was necessary just to get the movie made. She loved the script to the point of not even having any notes or changes.
Watching these made me realize Billy can Lowkey actually sing
Don’t lie to me know 😂
I love your videos billy, you are my comfort character when im feeling sad or down
Neat fact: In the scene where Miss Trunchbull is hunting down Matilda and Miss Honey the chandelier that falls is back in place in a later scene.
As the saying goes “every child deserves a parent, but not every parent deserves a child”
