Great video on the Orion head! But my OCD can't handle the lens and matte box misalignment!

tilt looks a bit "steppy", vibrating camera instead of smooth movement?

This isn’t a throwback. Still being used today, in fact preferred by union pros for dolly moves

In your tight inserts of pan left, it seems to wobble like a bitch. What's that about?

Know that place. Cool to see FS again. Question though. Does the head jerk left and right like that all the time when using the tilt crank? or was something not tightened for this demo?

Ha! I know, right!? If truth be told, I am so mad that I did not notice myself at the time of shooting! Each time I see this, I wonder how many folks will notice. I am truly sorry for that oversight. I also think, “ Why didn’t one of the three camera operators shooting this segment notice either!!! In my defense, it was only there for show, and to facilitate the introduction of the head...but still...thanks for watching! :-)

Michael Walsh hello, I want to know between speeds, is there a Neutral position ? Sometimes you want to activate neutral in order to position both camera and gears in certain positions. Greetings

Have you tried proaim's filmcity dslr gear head?

I have not. I looked at that head about two years ago, and determined that it was not built to the same specs as the Orion. The Film City head had a different arrangement to the wheels and gearing, as well as what appeared to be a number of plastic parts.
One thing that is critical to the proper function of a geared head is the balanced wheels used for pan and tilt. Their weight, and proportion to the gear drive help to give the smooth movement necessary for longer lenses.
I know the DSLR head is significantly cheaper than the Orion, which may be an important point for some folks. In that case, I'd say it is a good thing to be able to experience the control, and fluidity of this style of camera movement, than not at all.
The Orion head is a Proaim copy of the Gear-Nex product, produced by Film Toys. Their product is a superb piece of gear, but was significantly out of my price range. So, I was curious when the Orion came out. I was able to experience the precision of a great product at a great price.
If you have experience with the Film City head, and would be comfortable sharing your observations here, I would love to know your thoughts?

I'm looking at buying something mostly to learn how to use wheels, so the price-point is a bit more important than performance for me. I'd rather get a real head than a simulator product - and even if its not perfect, I think i could still use it on a shoot. I found some youtube videos of the previous gen on the film city head, but haven't found anything about the new model. The orion is tempting as it looks like better construction, but seems overkill for me especially when one considers I am mostly using it to learn and can rent a better head for a real shoot. But it'd be nice to know if the quality is good enough for some fun small projects before I drop the money. Buy cheap, buy twice...

@@JoshuaNitschke I will say this, the Orion is a big head. It is probably over kill for a DSLR, or small camera. If you were to pair it with an Ursa Mini, or a Red camera, it would make a nice partner. You should also have a large, sturdy tripod for this beast. It is designed for a Mitchell standard tripod, but it does come with a 100mm adapter. I noticed recently that Proaim just introduced their own "Ronford" styled tripod with a Mitchel receiver, for only $550.00. That is a great price for the tripod most suited for this product.
I would say that, if you anticipate having access to the Arri gear head, or a set of Panavision "wheels," on upcoming jobs, this Orion head would be the ideal trainer for you.
In terms of performance, I am very happy with mine, and have never felt short changed by the build quality.

Indeed. I'm thinking that the DSLR one should hopefully be good enough for what I'm hoping to accomplish (practice and small dslr shoots). If I get it, I can put up a review of my own. Also, if you are in the Los Angeles area I could let you try it if you are curious.

If you are going to spend $2000 on a geared head, you can at least spend $50 on a better mic so we can hear you.
