    The Subaru cabin air filter with its "UP" marking with an arrow pointing upward isn't always present on an aftermarket cabin air filter.
    It's important to get the filter installed so that the air flows through the filter from the top side to the bottom side of the filter. The blower motor is located below the filter and it is pulling air through the filter from the top side of the filter to the bottom side. The "dirty" side of the cabin air filter will be on the top side of this vehicle's cabin air filter.
    If you purchase a non Subaru cabin air filter and it states the airflow is in a particular direction with an arrow for the airflow or just an arrow with no label "UP" or "Airflow", make sure that points downward. If the filter is marked like the Subaru filter with an arrow and the word "UP" make sure the arrow points in the upward direction.

      No, I installed the cabin air filter with the "UP" arrows pointing upward. You can see that starting around the 3:28 time mark of the video.

    This is correct OEM Number - 72880-FL00A ?

      That's the one I listed (minus the "-") in the video's description section. I just searched on an online Subaru parts website and 72880FL00A is the part number for the 2018 to 2023 Crosstrek.

    GREAT video!! Dealership trying to charge $77 for a replacement. Must be $22 part and $55 / hour of labor charge... Thoughts on K&N washable filter??

    • @RetroCarGuy530
      @RetroCarGuy530  2 года назад

      I'm glad you were able to save some money. I have not used any K&N cabin air filters, so I can't state anything good/bad about them. If the cost of the K&N cabin air filter is no more than 2 to 3 times the regular paper cabin air filter, you'll have a return on your investment in just a couple of filter changes. It also depends on what type of "stuff" your vehicle and thus the cabin air filter are getting exposed to while in use. If the filter only has dirt in it, then washing can be a viable method of cleaning it for reuse. If there are other things such as tree sap or a variety of the bug remains that leave other fluids to dry in the filter, I might be of the opinion to simply use a regular replaceable paper cabin air filter.

    Thanks how often should this be replaced? And also engine air filter. Thanks

    • @RetroCarGuy530
      @RetroCarGuy530  Год назад +2

      It kind of depends on the where you drive your vehicle and how "dirty" (dust) in the air. I would suggest checking the engine air filter every 3 months and replace when you see a significant loss of sunlight visibility when holding the filter up towards the sun or a bright light. If you need to replace the engine filter, it's likely a good time to also replace the cabin air filter. At a minimum, I would recommend replacing the cabin air filter on an annual basis.

    You can't assume that it's okay to simply point the arrow up on your new filter because your old cabin air filter had its arrow pointing up.
    Air flow is NOT going up. Air flow is down. If you put the filter in with an air flow arrow pointing up then it's upside down.
    The ONLY time an arrow on a cabin air filter should point up is if it says "up" next to the arrow (like yours did). But... All horizontally mounted cabin air filters with the blower motor mounted below the filter have downward air flow. Otherwise the blower motor would be full of dirt and debris. If it doesn't say up next to the arrow then the arrow indicates air flow direction and should point down. Another simple way to determine this is noticing how the dirt accumulates on top of the old filter which proves that dirty unfiltered air enters the topside of the filter and flows downward.
    Still not sure? Then remove the filter and turn on the blower. Then put your hand where the filter goes. Does it feel like it's blowing upward? Use a piece of string or tissue paper. They will be sucked downward.
    Most aftermarket cabin filters have air flow arrows, not "up" arrows.
    All the Toyota or Subaru parts that say up on them have nothing to do with air flow. They are simply telling us which side goes up. So if your filter says "up" next to the arrow then of course it should point up.
    If it doesn't say anything next to the arrow (like on a WIX branded filter) then by default an arrow on an air filter indicates air flow direction. I've already emailed WIX to confirm this to be true.

      Nowhere in this video did I state that the arrow always goes up nor did I state the airflow is going in the upward direction. I stated that the arrow for this filter points in the upward direction because it's marked "UP" next the arrow.
      Your other points about figuring out airflow direction are on point. I'll add some tips about the filter flow direction to the a pinned comment for the video.

      I realize that. Sorry if I came on a bit strong but I felt those things should have been covered because a lot of folks get it wrong. They just assume that all arrows on all filters should point the same way. And nowhere in the video did you say the arrow doesn't always point up.
      You got it right which is why I gave you thumbs up. 😉😁
