This was informative. I thought I would hear things I already knew about like the thin glass. I was wanting to start making candles with botanicals, but sadly, I understand now why that won’t work. Didn’t know about porous pottery either. Thank you!
Hi! Question! I want to make an outdoor centerpiece using a citronella candle in a metal container and put that inside an unfinished porous ceramic piece. Maybe put rocks inside the ceramic piece to stable and raise metal candle tin. Is this a dangerous idea?
I would say yes IF they say dishwasher safe, if the glass is reasonably thick, and just following some of the other guidelines I mentioned. Always proceed with caution when buying from a thrift store for candle containers because you might not be able to tell the material.
Not only are ceramic mugs heat resistant enough to hold hot coffee or tea, when glazed they were fired at somewhere over 1,000°, depending on the type of glaze. High-fire glazes such as those used on stoneware and porcelain are fired somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,305° to 2,530°. I don't think there's a chance of a candle getting a glazed vessel hot enough to melt the glaze. 🙂
Yes, if the glass is heat resistant it should be safe. Remember to stay away from THIN glass though, and be sure that it is a large enough vessel for making a candle in.
Most glass is heat resistant and can be sterilizing in a super hot dishwasher. However, a flame thats too close to the heat resistant glass can still shatter the glass. Some will say, "Ive used wine glasses to make candles and its never broke on me!" But wine glasses are dangerous to use and they are heat resistant. It only takes one glass a homemade candle was made in to break and a persons will have a bad day!
As somebody who’s new to candle making, thank you
I'm glad this helped you! 🥰
this was really helpful!
I bought cheap candles, emptied them and made my own candles in the glass recipients. It is indeed a very thick glass.

I think that should be safe, as long as the flame isn't near the porous material! :)
@@holisticjourneywellness thank you! I appreciate your advice!
What do you think about glass jars from the supermarket, where things like beans or carrots come in
Is it okay to paste some clothe outside the container?
Glueing cloth or other material outside the container (as long as it's not near the top) is usually okay because the flange can't reach it!
Using this guide is it safe to use thrift store pieces as candle vessels?

👍 great info!
I put a mini Yankee candle in a thick shot glass, it shattered while the candle was burning. 😣
Yikes! The candle was probably too hot and the flame might have been too close to the glass.

Also, have you tried using tritian for candles?
