Why Do People Troll?

  • You’ve probably encountered trolling on social media, in comment threads, or maybe even in real life. But have you ever stopped to think about why these people troll?
The Internet is the perfect place to be anonymous. Trolls often take advantage of this, provoking and upsetting others while hiding behind an online identity. In doing so, they avoid real-world consequences.
Most people are motivated by positive social rewards, meaning that they feel good when they do something nice for others. Giving someone a gift, holding a door, or just complimenting someone can evoke positive feelings.
Trolls are motivated by something entirely different. They tend to have higher levels of negative social potency. This means they enjoy making others suffer and the attention that comes along with it. Dishing out insults and provoking others into arguments gives them satisfaction.
Watch our video to learn more about trolls and how to deal with them!

I remember some trolling on RUclips 12 years ago. I kept biting into its words. After a while I took a step back and realized that I have a better chance of convincing a dry wall to go to college than talking to a troll. Nowadays when a leave a comment I just pretend that they are not there and just reply to comments that are actually constructive. It’s like blocking a user but in your head since RUclips doesn’t let you do that.

I admit some troll has certainly kinds of strength (a type of "geekiness") I posted some contents on platform, then it came a guy "rather lengthy" passage pointing out my misunderstanding about the field. I first saw this as a sign that he hoped to interact with me, which I kind of longed (as I feel myself being marginal on the platform) Though I still I believe, given he post up a rather long comment, he should perhaps introduce himself first or add some that "Hey I believe your work is great yet I believe in several points, doing this way would be better"
And in later comments, I find it more and more irritating . He started to utter boastful words about himself, bragging himself as if he is the most knowledgeable expert of the field. And saying others working in the same field in the forum is negligible.
I would say that trolliness may somehow just the other side of geekiness. When you are geek on one thing, you want to express your knowledge on this, but sometimes one will go obesessed. But having explored the relationship between a geek and troll doesn't mean the troll part would give pleasure to others, we somehow need to transform that part to be a lubricant to facilitate the delivery of knowledge you are "sharp" on

A troll is a person who starts quarrels or upsets people on the Internet to distract and sow discord by posting inflammatory and digressive,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the intent of provoking readers into displaying emotional responses[2] and normalizing tangential discussion,[3] whether for the troll's amusement or a specific gain.
Both the noun and the verb forms of "troll" are associated with Internet discourse. However, the word has also been used more widely. Media attention in recent years has equated trolling with online harassment. For example, the mass media have used "troll" to mean "a person who defaces Internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families".[4][5] In addition, depictions of trolling have been included in popular fictional works, such as the HBO television program The Newsroom, in which a main character encounters harassing persons online and tries to infiltrate their circles by posting negative sexual comments.

Ships *trawl* with big nets - no bait involved. The term *troll* was derogatory, describing a homeless person living under a bridge -not bait on a fishing rod. In stories designed to scare kids it refers to hideous, dangerous, territorial monsters who.. live under bridges... like Billygoat’s Gruff: “under the bridge lived a great ugly troll, with eyes as big as saucers..” Now troll refers to a mean internet user, or sometimes unfairly, anyone who exposes a falsity. We’ll see if anyone calls me a troll for this comment! :) what fun!

I am sure I will be accused of trolling, but I am also using my real name. Originally the term troll was created as a racist trope or a racist signal to white people that a person does not belong in this forum. I was there, i know how this was originally used. Usually people calling someone a troll were the trolls. Again Usenet moderators were usually anonymous and the ones who used this trope. And this video does a great job of pointing out that the anonymity gave them power. So the very creators of the term where actually the trolls and they used the new term to shut down controversial topics such as equality and the end of racism in tech. As for the psychology, you just described how racism works. Black people were accused of being "uppity" or controversial or basically trolls when they tried to fight for rights in America. Racists would accuse them of "looking for attention" they craved. The word "troll" itself is newish but the racism behind it is old. The picture you painted of a troll sitting in a chair. It's called DE-anthropomphization, it is meant to dehumanize the person on the other side. A common racist stand as well. And finally I could care less if anyone responds and would rather no one did. My hope is this post stands as a record of the real intent behind the word troll and how racist it is.

Trolling has the spirit of pranking. Just make sure you don't actually hurt anyone. I prefer reverse pranking/trolling... pranking a prankster. So much fun to waste the time of those who intended to waste mine. Check mate!

    • @duckyoutube6318
      @duckyoutube6318 Год назад

How is making people sad or angry akin to pranking? Its not even close. The intent of a prank is to be funny and creative, the intent of trolling is to piss people off or make them depressed.
I have seen people that have been pranked laugh most of the time. Its the exact opposite with trolling. The person getting trolled never laughs.
You waste your time by wasting it with those that intend to waste your time? That is so stupid i have to wonder if you are trolling.
Seems like this generation is without morals. Maybe that's why they are so pissed at older generations for things like slavery. Its all projection. They lack morals so they project that on to everyone else to cope. Pathetic...
