  • Welcome back to the train room for another upgrade video! Today we will be upgrading an MTH Allegheny from the mid/ late 1990s. This is a Rail King by MTH model meaning it is semi scale. The original design only had a fan driven smoke unit with digital whistle/ bell from QSI Electronics.
    PS3 upgrade kit includes all but fan smoke unit and potentiometer for volume control.
    The kit was purchased at Iron Horse Trains - Hanover PA
    The Engine was purchased at White Rose Hobbies - York PA
    This video is intended for educational and entertainment purposes ONLY! I am NOT an affiliated repair shop of MTH trains nor licensed repair technician. Results may vary on finalized product.
    Thanks for watching!
    Happy Railroading!

    Nick, the tender was easy as you said but when you got into the engine YIKES!! It's a nightmare. Have you ever done a PS3 upgrade to a Sunset 3rd Rail model? Over all, this has been very educational. I believe we need more of these types of videos for model railroaders for DCS, ERR, Legacy (I wish Lionel made Legacy upgrade kits) and DCC. I was surprised to see how well DCC works in 3-rail O scale trains. Thank you so much for the time you put into this, I will be watching it more than once. Again thank you!!!

    Nick, I have to give you credit for undertaking such a complex wiring project. As an electrician with 45 years of experience in the trade, it's not for the faint of heart for a novice, but if you have the understanding, patience, tools and logic, it's doable. You are tackling it as any experienced technician would by using the 3 R's. Reasoning, rationalization, and relentless persevering. After all, it is an inanimate object. I would encourage anyone interested in learning a trade to take up this hobby as it provides so many forms of learning different skills that one can use to make a living while loving what you're doing. Where else would you get so many opportunities to be your own architect, engineer, builder, planner, landscaper, artist, or electrician? There's just so many ways for learning and discovery that's fun and enjoyable. We need more guys like you willing to take chances to learn and pass it along. Thanks for taking the time to encourage others to do the same.

      Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words. I always try my best with these and I usually never give up. For hobby stuff yes but as a trade no. I currently work on the railroad and have been loving the career. We do have repairmen but the exam / practical is extremely difficult. The exam covers all from pneumatics to hydraulics and electronics

      @NixCrossing I would highly encourage you to pursue any and all opportunities available to you and accept and embrace those challenges as you only get one chance at life. I regret not finding the same passion for my job as I do with modeling. For me, my job was a means to an end, but It could have been so much more if I realized all the potential that it had to offer. Although rewarding, I never considered it as something I could find passion and enjoyment with until I retired. There is something rewarding about repairing or figuring out electrical modifications that give satisfaction for making things work as intended. Hydraulics and pneumatic adaptations on a model railroad sound intriguing. Humm. I wonder now.

    Excellent video Nick. I was very impressed. What a great job you did! You got yourself a great runner now. You’ve come a long way from your conventional operating days, going into the TMCC world, to now doing PS3 upgrades. Outstanding my friend! Tom

    I just upgraded my Rail King Allegheny to PS3 too! The O Gauge Railroading Forum is a valuable resource with tons of information. My kit had diesel sounds, so I had to send the sound file and flash a chain file to get my smoke unit to work. I cut the traces as shown in the instructions and it smokes like crazy now!

    Hey Nick, my MTH proto 3 AC4400 has a cab number 4000, but on the remote & ipad it's shows up 4001??. Been that way since i bought it. The blue flame bonnet.

    • @NixCrossing
      @NixCrossing  9 месяцев назад

      Oh no! Haha that’s from the programed “boiler” settings - You can edit the name of the engine in the app, I believe it’s going to be remote specific. I had a similar problem with one of my upgrades.

    • @conductorjohnmthtrains2239
      @conductorjohnmthtrains2239 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@NixCrossing I changed it with the app, hopefully it won't bounce back to 4001. 😆. I tried the DCS remote first, what a joke- I hate those remotes & I have 2 of them

    • @NixCrossing
      @NixCrossing  9 месяцев назад +1

      @conductorjohnmthtrains2239 that should work if you use it with the same TIU. If you take it to another TIU it might go back to 4000 😂

    • @conductorjohnmthtrains2239
      @conductorjohnmthtrains2239 9 месяцев назад

      @@NixCrossing only one tiu, I'm using 3 of the 4 channels. Two fixed and one variable. It took a few tries getting the variable to work with that dumb remote😂

    Nick I am doing a similar upgrade but I have a question, would you happen to know the correct MTH part number for a compatible PS 2/3.0 smoke unit?

    • @NixCrossing
      @NixCrossing  Месяц назад

      I would look up their parts website to find a smoke unit. Most of my smoke units are installed via retro-fit in the shell. I usually use on that has a brass cup or fitting. In the past I’ve soldered a brass tube to these and ran the tube through the stack after drilling out the stack to fix the tube. Sometimes I’ve glued the tube to the stack with super glue - I know it’s a pain, but they will smoke like crazy.

    The steam kit doesn't come with front-end marker lights?

    • @NixCrossing
      @NixCrossing  Месяц назад

      No , but Id recommend Evemodel LEDs that can be found on Amazon. Wire all the lights together. The lights will be powered by DC power somewhere between 8-12 volts - if the lights do not cut on you’ll have to switch the polarity. I also use their lights for rear markers / cab lights / firebox glow. a.co/d/6sV8lLg

    For those Evemodel LED's what size and color did you choose? Im thinking of doing that mod as well.

    • @NixCrossing
      @NixCrossing  8 месяцев назад

      I used the Warm White - 5MM size LEDs. I highly recommend using the smaller 2-3 MM lights for steam so you can fit them in the headlight frames.
