Monty Python: Where Are They Now?

The scenes are all made immensely funnier by the po-faced and humourless 'explanations' offered by the commentator on just why they are funny - in case we didn't ever get them.
John Cleese. Love Fawlty Towers, too.😊
Graham Chapman.
Try watching more than one episode of Fawlty Towers at a time.
It is just not possible! How Manuel survived Basil's treatment, I will forever wonder.
Mum was a Brit before getting her Canadian Citizenship, so I guess that makes me part. And my Aunt Patsy on Mom's side owned one of the hotels in Torquay! Halford was her married name, Fancott her maiden name.
Oh, another fave - Two Ronnies (when I got my first set of glasses, I actually looked a LOT like Ronnie Corbett)
@@WhiteWolf65 I have the whole Fawlty Towers series on DVD. 😀
And my mum, who is turning 98 next month, is a British War Bride.
I am truly grateful that Watchmojo uk is here to explain the mechanics of a joke over the joke itself- otherwise I would have never known that it was funny. Imagine how boring it would have been if they just ran the clips of genuinely funny people. Thanks guys
you don't like it you can always leave!
People who post stuff like this cannot stop talking ..... agree with you 100%
@@chaserseven2886Done
I did after 2 minutes
.......... and they should go away or you will taunt them a second time
One my favs is when King Arthur confronts some peasants and says he is king because the Lady of the Lake gave him the sword Excalibur. Unimpressed, they tell him, "You can't be the king just because some watery tart threw a sword at you!"
He’s King cuz he’s not covered in shite!
Help! Help! I'm being repressed!
'" "ow did you get to be King? I didn't vote for you!" still use it hahaha
But the better line, same film, how do we know he is the king, coz he is the only one not covered in shit
Who made you king?
The evil rabbit with the holy grenade in my opinion is Hilarious and deserves a spot on this list.
" The beast of..." forget the name but yeah!
The wizard Tim was hilarious in that sketch.
There are a lot of Holy Grail sketches that could have been in this video. Brian skits as well. I had to watch both twice at the cinema because I was laughing hysterically I missed a lot. Watching it since, I realized that I had still missed a bunch. The killer rabbit is a hilarious classic.
Monty Python will never get old and stale! The comedy ages like the finest wine!
I agree. Watched so many times and still laugh like a madwoman. Still quoting, so's my daughter, and granddaughters, and formerly my mother too. Generations of Python fans.
The killer rabbit and the bridge of death both need to be in there
Agree - the bridge of death needs to be in the top 5! 'Ere the other side ye see!'
Don't forget the Holy hand grenade. 3 shall be the number....
@@Rudeolph😂 agree
Especially the bridge, plus one here mate. I would dare to add, castle charge scene as well, it is one of my favorites.
Missing “you are all individuals…I am not”, cracks me up every time
The evil bunny always gets me.
Destroyed with the Holy Hand grenade!
That is also my favorite sketch 2nd only with the entire sparrow joke.
Did you notice the " holy hand grenade" looks like a copy of the queens sceptre?
King Arthur's debate on his right to rule with Dennis the Anarcho-syndicalist in Monty Python and the Holy Grail is classic. Dennis's multiple off color descriptions of the Lady of the Lake have me rolling every time.😂😂😂
Dennis ... there's some lovely filth over here ...
How do you know he's king? He doesn't have shit all over him.
When I retired as an opera chorister, my last performance was in the opera La Boheme. While sitting in the house during a rehearsal , I noticed the English translation of the Italian text projected on the proscenium arch above the stage. One of the singers was singing about having killed a parrot. I had to summon every ounce of self-control to keep from shouting out, "He's not dead, he's just pining for the fjords.".
Ok, now you made me chortle all over again. Gosh, can you believe these sketches are over 50 years old now?
The Cheese Shop has to be included. That is comedy gold!
It's gold, Jerry! GOLD!
@@devcybikowere fresh out of that, sorry!
Forgot the cheese .
And don't forget the Holy Hand grenade , and the witch trial, the Knights who say Nee, the I want to be a woman sketch in the arena....I could go on and on
"It's a bit runny, sir"
They're all great, but one of my favourites is 'Romans go home' written in Latin, incorrectly, by Chapman and John cheese correcting him. 😅😂😅😂 Gets me every time! 👍
Cleese was actually a Latin tutor when he was at university, so, way to use that education on the job!
"People called Romans they go the house?!" "It says 'Romans go home'." "No it doesn't."
Wonderful combination of intellect and humor. I do wonder how many times this has been shown in classes.
@@user-tz3yx8dr1j I love your optimism that it HAS been shown in classes.
@@cainealexander-mccord2805they would definitely show the lumberjack born in wrong body and say that it's a documentary.
The good ol days, gone but not forgotten.
These all are brilliant. Ageless, from back in a time, when you didn't need to swear to get a laugh
Glad you included THE ARGUMENT CLINIC, it's one of my favorites. The bit with Graham and Mike in the abuse room was great, but the best part for me was when Mike says to John I HAD ENOUGH OF THIS and John says NO YOU HAVEN'T and Mike says OH SHUT UP !!!!! It's silly stuff like this that cracks me up... Much thanks for the post...
I think the most overlooked part of that original sketch is when Michael Palin originally leaves the receptionist and enters the wrong room, getting yelled at, responding "I didn't come for this! I came for an argument!" "Oh, that's room 12B this is 12A..... (and after he leaves) stupid get." lol
"You're not the Messiah!...You're a very naughty boy!" my Mum once said to me, out of the blue!
Some time later Brian finally cracks: "ALLRIGHT, i am the messiah; now fuck off!"
😂 Real comedy, this entire film had me cracking up with laughter....
Counting down the funniest Python sketches = wonderful idea
Explaining each sketch = nothing could be less Python and less funny
Exactly. If the sketches needed explained, they wouldn't be funny!
One of the more bizarre, but still treasured by me... "Confuse-a-cat Ltd."
Exactly. I always think of that...of course, I have a cat...
The shot of the cat sitting outside having zero reaction is what makes this sketch pure genius. On of my all time favorites that never fails to make me laugh.
I loved the Pythons slapping each other with fish. These people were Gods in their time. 😊
I knew that the Dead Parrot sketch was gonna be number 1
great skit and twit of the year skit.
The actors playing Pilate's guards were told they wouldn't be paid if they laughed. Which is why their reactions are so realistic.
I love the scene from Holy Grail where the King is trying to order two soldiers to guard his son 😂
We're not to enter the room, even if you come and get him.
@@MrHartApart No, you're supposed to stay here and make sure HE doesn't leave, until I come and get him
And the one member...blanking...dammit...the one who unfortuantely had the alcohol problem, was shit-faced in that scene. Graham Chapman?
My favourite sketch is "Crunchy Frog". I nearly died of laughter when I saw it the first time. 🤣
That is definitely an awesome one. I prefer the version from the show over the stage shows, but that may be because it's the one I experienced first. Another overlooked one is the Mister Smoketoomuch sketch, where the man (Eric Idle) has it pointed out to him that he should probably quit, and for the first time realizes that his name sounds like the actual phrase. There's also the Raymond Luxury Yacht sketch. ;-)
I think the death scene in the meaning of life is hilarious. The way the American asks "What line of work of work are you in death"? 😂😂😂😂
The salmon..................MOUSSE!
The Meaning of Life was woefully underrepresented in this video, but I guess that's to be expected when you limit your field to 20 items.
Silly Job interview, fish slapping dance😂
"Camelot" (the song) from "The Holy Grail" also from the same movie "There's lots of lovely filth down here Dennis" and of course "We've found a Witch, can we burn her?" ............. now I've got to go and watch the whole movie again, thanks a lot.
Strange women, lyin' in ponds, distributin' swords, is no basis for a system of government!
It's only a model.
Thanks for taking me back through these sketches. It triggered a plethora of memories from the 70s!
I saw Python live in Regina Sask. in 1973 on their And Now For Something Completely Different Tour. The 'Dead Parrot Sketch' was pure gold.
I think the argument clinic was definitely one of their finest skits...I loved many of them.. I couldn't wait to watch their shows. i 've seen most of their movies multiple times... but "The Holy Grail".. is my favorite movie of theirs...
British humor are the finest in the world. I grew up eith these guys, thanks to my older brother.
Love also "the job interview", "the warriors ho say NI", "The bridge of death", "the enchanter", "cheese shop", "selling matresses", "help I'm being repressed", "bring out your death", "we found a witch", "may we leave", "the kilker rabbit", and so many other scketches, Monty Pythons are memorable.
I had totally forgotten the class Twit of the Year and the Grannies, thanks for the reminder; and what about those angry turn left signs? Totally "out there"! LOL The ministry of silly walks is one of my favorites. All this with straight faces, kudos. I think you did pick good ones, yet there are so many! Thanks
Palin as pontius pilot.....is comedic genius .😂😂😂😂
Welease Wodger!
Even the mere thought of his leering "He has a wife you know..." sends me into spasms of laughter.
2:39 when we're stuffed with a meal I say to my wife "not even a waffer thin mint?" lol
Just give wafer one f.
@@glen1ster f in the chat for you!
Great sketches, did not need to be told what I am seeing and hearing thanks.
4 Yorkshiremen was written by the entire cast of "At Last the 1948 Show" - including Tim Brooke-Taylor and Marty Feldman.
It was actually originally performed by the troupe while they were part of the Cambridge Footlights.
With the Dead Parrot Sketch, it was obvious that someone in the writing crew had noticed the MANY euphimisms for "He's dead." --Bob Bailey in Maine, USA
Yes, those were great. And I still enjoy them just as much now as I did 40 years ago. Thanks
I have to agree with the others, I do love the KILLER RABBIT sketch! But I also really loved the Argument Clinic! I’ve even used that technique! All those bits were great!
The Spanish inquisition: I love the one where they put her in the comfy chair, then torture her with a fluffy pillow!
My favorite is the song from the movie, Every sperm is sacred.
Especially the children singing it.
That was filmed at the end of my street where I used to live ♠️
So awesome.
That whole scene is hilarious. "so I've sold you all for medical experiments"........
But that's just like us dear, we have 2 children and we've had sex twice 😜
I expected it to be included, too. Let's face it; very few of their pieces were not comedy gold.
Monty Python never gets old. I always get a laugh, no matter what!
I grew up in the Baptist church and I can quote Python orders of magnitude better than I can quote the...th...what's that one book Baptists are always using to virtue signal, again?
The royal society for putting things on top of other things!
The bridge of death is still my absolute favourite monty python sketch.
You forgot the only man in a world of superheroes, who can save everyone, Bicycle Repair Man.
In a world made up of Supermen, who can fix a flat and get a cyclist back on the road?
Bicycle repair man ... how can we ever repay you?
Penguin on the back of the TV is my favourite 😂
Ethel the Frog with the Pirahna Brothers is my favorite.
There is an English guy named Hugh Newman, who is always on those Discovery shoes, like Ancient Aliens. He has a broken nose, and every time he comes on screen, I immediately think of the Pirahna Brothers. He looks like the kind of guy who would be working the docks with brass knuckles. "You want me to take care of this guy, Dinsdale?"
Here is my list:
20: „Romanus eunt domus“ from the life of Brian
19: The ex-leper from the life of Brian
18: „Every sperm is sacred“ from the meaning of life
17: „Spam“ from Monty Python’s flying circus
16: The competition for the upper class twit of the year from Monty Python’s flying circus
15: The pac man pram from Monty Pythons flying circus
14: Hells Grannies from Monty Python’s flying circus
13: The Trojan cow from Monty Python and the holy grail
12: The black knight from Monty Python and the holy grail
11: The three questions at the bridge from Monty Python and the holy grail
10: “Always look on the bright side of life “ from the life of Brian
9: The league against chartered accountancy from Monty Python’s flying circus
8: The lumberjack song from Monty Python’s flying circus
7: “Biggus Dickus” from the life of Brian
6: Stan/Loretta” from the life of Brian
5: The ministry of silly walks from Monty Python’s flying circus
4: The stoning from the life of Brian
3: Brian’s speech to his followers from the life of Brian
2: The killer joke from Monty Python’s flying circus
1: The dead parrot from Monty Python’s flying circus
Honorable mentions:
The Intro to Monty Python and the holy grail
The salmon mousse from the meaning of life
Bicycle repair man from Monty Python’s flying circus
The suicide of the Judean Peoples’ front from the life of Brian
The killer rabbit from Monty Python and the holy grail
My favourite Python is John Cleese. He always does the most absurd things with an air of perfect seriousness.
I would have to add the Three Wise Men scene from the Life of Brian. The bit about Jesus's star sign is brilliant, and the Don't You Want to Haggle Scene from Brian is too funny.
Honestly, I would never have included Upper Class Twit of the Year in any of even their top 50. It's just tedious. There are so many more sketches that outshine that one. I'm glad you included the Stan/Loretta sketch. I think I enjoy that one even more now than ever before. "Where's the fetus going to gestate? You going to keep it in a box?"
Oh yes, that lecture in Latin spelling is awesome. 🤣
@@mak7combatgsis204 Yes, this myrrh part is still living in my family... :-D
Pritty good list, but I would add the intro-animation and song from "meaning of life" and the galaxy song 😊
Number 20 is severely underrated. *_Saturday Night Live_* would later do a similar sketch about _The Walk, Talk, and Act Like A Sissy Olympics_ , and it was equally hilarious.
A great list and there are so many that could have been chosen but The Cheese Shop is definitely Top 20. I also love the the continuation of the Judea line where Stan wants to be called Loretta and have babies and the Gas Cooker…
Its a very contentious scene in current day, it was almost prophetic when you look at where we are now with all the gender nonsense.
They're all great but you failed to include the brilliant 'Galaxy Song'.
Can we have your liver then?
It is indeed brilliant. I've always thought their intellect is why the comedy isn't everyone 's cup of tea. Sure, some is very silly, but most is obviously the work of extremely bright, well-read men. (All men in the troupe, of course. ) Anyway, I loved it way back in the old days and I love it now.
The "Run Away!" bit in Holy Grail always had me rolling in laughter.
Often overlooked but genius none the less, The Argument Clinic.
Loved Python since I was a kid and always will.
Fish slap dance: completely out of the box, with a surprising end
The Fish Slapping Dance is my Fave
It's great. It's just too short. ;-)
Cheese shop, bicycle repairman, fish slapping dance ,so many others . Best show ever. Well, maybe except SCTV .
I All Of The Monty Python Sketches Were Funny & Silly I Like The Killer Rabbit In Monty Python & The Holly Grail!
This parrot is no more . It has gone to meet its Maker.
He's f**kin snuffed it!
The Argument is my favorite
The Spanish Inquisition is at the top of my favorites list! The grandmas skit slays me everytime!
Too bad the "fish slapping dance" wasn't included. It was hilarious.
I'm really shocked that the Every Sperm is Sacred musical skit didn't make #1.
My favourite sketch is "The Undertaker."
Cleese and Chapman hit an all-time low in bad taste with that one.
Absolutely hilarious. 🤣
Two old ladies on a park bench. "What is that?" "It's a piston engine." "Well how do you cook it?"
12:45 And everyone had a sense of humor.
So funny can’t stop laughing and it’s just the clips simply the best
Personally, I love everything that the team did. Life of Brian is my favourite movie. xx
Wasn't expecting number 6!
NOBODY EXPECTS NUMBER 6!!!!
The Banter sketch is priceless.
Another one, similar to number one skit, is the post office sketch complaining to Michael Palin which turns into the Lord Mayor signing an apology and the Mayor and his entourage go back outside to play the second half of a rugby game. It’s the dialog between Cleese and Palin that make it very good. Standard outrageousness.
What? No Cheese Shop sketch. This is an outrage!
No need to rehash the Dead Parrot sketch. It's a copy, and one of the reasons John Cleese left the show. He felt they were remaking old material. They talked him into a 3rd season (when Cheese Shop appeared), but he left before the 4th season. It also contained half the number of episodes of the previous seasons as a result. Mr. Neutron was probably the only halfway decent sketch in the last season.
I always cracked up when one of them would break into a skit and be like, Right! Stop that! 😂 I still use that. 😁
You forgot that the Spam bit was the subject of a rather successful Broadway show.
The late, great Marty Feldman sitting on the right in the “1947 sketch.”
Thank you for this program. We will never again see this level of raw true comedy genius. Be well.
I know all the dialog from all the Python sketches and the Holy Grail sketches, and most of the dialog from Meaning of Life and Life of Brian. Wonderful memories...
Thanks for this list and many funny moments/sketches I'm sure if I rewatch some of Monty Pythons Flying Circus episodes, some or even lots will pop up that should have made the list (Bicycle repair man?), but the one that comes to mind is in The life of Brian when he has escaped from the Romans and they are chasing him while running up a tower, he falls... into a space ship with aliens that just happens to fly by, they have a rough fly through space, get shot at (by other alien space ships?) and finally he falls out at the exact same place (so he has to run from the Romans again and immediately).
The fish slap dance was hilarious.
"It's just a flash wound" gets me every time!
I love the lifeboat cannibals
Killer Rabbit! Also, a nod to George Harrison for Handmade Films & LOB
Protection racket on the British army was my favourite.
The one you didn't mention: The Vorpal Bunny!
The best comedy troop ever, one of the greatest sketches was the life of an English broker from breakfast to the office, my GF at the time totally lost it over the office scene,. Totally classic comedy we will never see again. 😂
And? Best comedy troupe!
gold pure gold, took me a long time to fully understand the intelligence of Python humour
The cheese shop is funnier than the lumberjack song. I’m really surprised that song made the top 20
Honorable mention: the philosopher's football match. "Eureka!"
For me it's the scene in Holy Grail with the knights arriving in Camalot...
I was pretty sure that the Dead Parrot sketch was going to be number one.
I have to believe that Monty Python's humor will be enjoyed as long as humans are here. I know I'll enjoy it as long as I'm around!
One of my favs. was the Bring Out Your Dead bit. Something I came back to during COVID-19 as a possible employment opportunity.
We have rat tarts, rat pudding and strawberry tarts...with a little bit of rat in it.
Bicycle Repair Man.
In a village where everybody is wearing a Superman costume, there's one guy walking around and repairing broken down bikes. "Look, he's mending the bike, with his own hands!" say the others, pointing at him.
I cut my hand while unjamming a pallet on my line at the plant. The supervisor asked if I needed to go to the ER and I said “tis but a flesh wound”. He laughed as I hit the first aid kit for a bandaid. He watched Monty python too.
Terry Jones doing that striptease while debating if England should join the Common Market needs an honorable mention.
I want Bright side of life played at my funeral or I'm not turning up.
The architect sketch should definately be in the top ten. All they wanted was a simple block of flats - not an abattoir!
The haggling scene from Life of Brian gets me. '10? For this? You must be mad!'.
My 14 years old son was watching that ... and I guess he's another victim/follower of Monty Python cult now... :-D
i was surprised that not only was 'bring out your dead' not #1, it was not even on your list ( I'm not dead yet)
I like the fish dance
My also-ran favorite: The Cheese Shop
