From the pictures, I originally thought he looked miscast, because he doesn't have the very straight and limp hair that characterizes Luffy, but he's pulling it off. It's not distracting and his acting pulls you in.
The main reason why this is an actually good adaptation is because the original creator of one piece basically told them what they could, and could not do, and basically was a watchdog making sure they didn’t screw with it so you can think oda for that
@@AkiRa22084 There isn't any statement from Oda about this in any direction - but only channels that use sentences from statements or interviews completely out of context.
If Oda really had a say, I highly doubt Nami's sister would come out this way. Also, Zoro not willingly calling Luffy captain. That is so un-Japanese you know.
It's been mentioned before, but the original mangaka, Eichiro Oda, was HEAVILY involved in the creation of the show, and was part of the casting. In one of Oda's responses to fans, he was asked what nationality the Straw Hats would be if they were real, and he responded in kind. Luffy would be Brazilian, Usopp would be African, Zoro would be Japanese, etc. Nami's actress gives me Hayley Williams from Paramore vibes.
It really does make a difference to have the original creator have final say. I think that is the reason The Expanse worked so well: the writers of the books are the lead writers of the show.
When you said that the live action made u curious about the anime I applauded! This is what a lot of fans of the anime can't see. Not only does this llive action perfectly adapt over 40 episodes of the anime, but it does it in a way that makes you care about these people and this world. I've been seeing channels that couldn't wait to see what comes next and started watching the anime. I can't wait for season 2, but I also can't wait to see what you think of the second half of the show. If you like the first half...you will LOVE the second. Love your work!
I’m so glad you liked it! I’m a huge One Piece fan and I loved the live action. I think they nailed the characters while making the entire show much more digestible for new fans. Sure I have my gripes but the heart and soul of the original story are undeniable present. I hope it gets a couple seasons. 😊
Nojiko was race swapped for some reason. And Aesop is pretty pointless in the LA although less annoying which is a plus. My main problem with the LA is that their mother didn't lie to Arlong to save their lives. She could've said the food was for a social call with friends.
@@sther1349 Ben Beckmen was horribly cast, Zeff and Sanji’s conversation about luffy was cut which made Sanji’s decision to join the crew feel more hollow than in the source material, Garp felt way more serious than usually does (except Marineford) to where if they portray Garp how he normally is it’s gonna come off as weird now, Arlong isn’t nearly as intimidating as he should be which makes me worried about all the larger than life characters to come, everyone feels weaker than they should, Zoro’s backstory feels rushed, Because they cut Jango out of syrup village Ussop didn’t get his moment there and was just kinda along for the ride, Garp’s doghat looked weird and I think could of been done better, ax hand Morgan was less evil and more of just an A hole (he straight up kills one of his men in the source material), Luffy feels way more restricted in his powers (because it costs money every time he uses them in live action) but honestly I feel like I’m just nick picking because overall I’m very happy with the series it exceeded my expectations by far
@@grog3514 Nojiko definitely had a slightly darker skin tone in the anime so I didn’t count that as race swapping but I get what you mean, I didn’t mind it. As with Bellemere she never truly felt like Nami and Nojiko’s mother so when push came to shove she choose to die rather than lie about not having daughters. It was done better in the anime but I think it still gets the message across that saying she doesn’t have a family was worse than death in her mind.
The live action to me is like Disney mixed with American Horror Story: Freak Show. Doesn't have the heart and soul of One Piece or the Japanese "shounen" feel. Characters are dressed like the original but have wrong characterizations and emotions. Zoro acts cool at all times and his glaring and glancing is even more than a snobbish woman's. Luffy is too ooh la la and smiling too much. Luffy in the original seems more reasonable and levelheaded. He has happy-go-lucky and crazy moments but he doesn't walk around smiling at all times like in the live action.
I'm totally unfamiliar with One Piece... I've watched some anime, but I'm not a huge Anime guy. I absolutely LOVED this series. It worked for me because the show took itself seriously, except the main character's whole thing is all about pretty overwhelming optimism and he never takes anything too seriously... the balance just somehow worked out amazing for me. I fully bought into the "cheese" of the anime aspects, while still appreciating the overall story as being pretty good and heartfelt.
I just started this series after watching Critical Drinker's thoughts on it. I don't know anything about the source material, but I'm enjoying it. The characters are quickly identifiable and... likable (which is increasingly rare). It is over-the-top in so many ways, but I think of it like a really good B-horror movie that understands it is for fun and not serious cinema. I think the fact this show revels in the fun factor truly separates it from so much else these days.
I am a normie and I really liked this show! I agreed with everything you said, and I am also used with some anime tropes like the color hair you pointed out, so for me was not that strange. I'm glad you mentioned the cinematography because was really outstanding!! I would like to add the OST because I found sooo amazing and well done 😊
You have expressed my EXACT feelings while watching the show! I've had friends telling me to get into One Piece for years but the amount of content was just too daunting and this was the perfect introduction. I could also feel the love for the OG show and manga working together with the new medium instead of against it. 11/10 would recommend to anyone and everyone who likes a good time.
From what I've seen it's the best by a massive margin but if you have any suggestions for ones that have done it right also would love to check them out. I've done the Bleach, FMA, Attack on titan and a couple others but all have been hot garbage.
I saw an interview with the youtuber NuxTaku and one of the writers of the show, Matt Owens, and he genuinely seemed super passionate about the project and was listening to all of the fans feedback (NuxTaku being a huge weeb). I'm so happy I gave him a chance, and he exceeded my expectations. It's a damn miracle!
This is the first time I've noticed that the first half is almost *entirely* goofball stuff. When he said "It doesn't take itself seriously and it's just here to have fun" I was in solid [wtf mode] for about 5 seconds before realizing... yeah... they actually did that in the live action and it's genius...
As a lifelong One Piece fan (15+ years), I wholeheartedly approved of this live action. A nice fans service for fans and a nice starting point for newcomers.
I know nothing about the manga or anime. I absolutely agree that the show is made with love and is visually striking. I think the guy playing Luffy is all in on his character. Damn I wish I could be on board with this. It's just too silly. I've never been a manga fan, but this show is like one level about Lazy Town. I really wanted to be with the rest of the gang with this, but I couldn't do it. Still, I hope it runs for ten seasons.
I loved hearing your take on this. I am so far into the fandom I had no idea how a "normies" would like it. As a fan, I loved it and it was obvious from all the promos that the crew and cast loved the series too. Very refreshing.
Whenever I see clips from this show everything from the casting to the acting to the lighting to the effects look like a low-budget college student fan-production of some guys who are definitely just a biiiiit too into the show but their sheer genuine wholesome enthusiasm makes it damn hard to dislike. From what I've heard, it's an accurate assesment.
Binged the whole thing in the last couple of days. Never watched One Piece (too much of a commitment) but I have to say this show is fantastic. Something you didn’t bring up, but the action sequences in this show are fantastic, way better than so many of the ones we’ve seen with other media.
I am really happy with the way they have dealt with the show so far. I think things will get dicey once they get into the next season. Things get pretty insane with this story. 1 thing that separates it from most other manga/anime is how much world building is done. Hard to bring that all in with 8 hours of content that covers 95 chapters or 44 @ 23 minute episodes. Can't wait to see what they do going forward. I have been a weekly manga reader and still keep up with the episodes using quarterly binges I have so few problems with the live action and all of them are minor nitpicks. The next 4 members of the crew I worry about but hopefully they get them right.
As a long time One Piece anime and manga fan I loved the Live Action! I honestly don't think it would be to hard for the idea of the direction of where season 2 would go. Going to try and stay as vague here as possible as with this show potentially being so main stream now spoiler territory is very real. I would see three major challenges that would need to happen. One I think they could potentially skip but I don't think that would happen and potentially more budget to that then other episodes in episodes 3 or 4. Another would be certain events leading up to a fantastic season 2 but more importantly an epic season 3 finale and getting that to fit in if green lit. Finally what most people would think would be a huge budget problem but could easily be solved with correct casting or a different point.
As someone whose been watching One Piece since it first showed up in the states through 4KIDS I can't really get into this. It's effectively a cliff notes version of the East Blue sage that cuts out numerous characters, storylines, world building and so much more. Is One Piece long, yes, can it drag sometimes, also yes, but it is like the Lord of Rings, it's about the Journey and trust me this Journey is AMAZING and once you get started it's hard to stop. Read the manga or watch the anime, you will NOT be disappointed.
The little footage that I've seen really reminds me of what I enjoyed about Scott Pilgrim vs the World. Sort of a zaniness that was both charming and self-aware, perhaps. Guess I'll see!
Arthur - Library of Ohara(a OP content creator) made an Easter Egg video for this show and its insane, to the point that I'm convinced that Matt Owens(exec prod also big OP fan) gave him some props or flew him to cape town and visited the set because there's no way you can catch it by just watching the show.
I thought I caught all the Easter eggs, but after watching I realized I only caught like 2% of the Easter eggs :) Still can't believe I missed Mihawk's ship in the intro...
OK Greg, you sold me. I'll give it a go. Also, listening to all the things you consider to be positives in this show makes me think of how much you would enjoy Arcane. Seriously. Watch it.
Long time super fan of One Piece here. 😊 And I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your honest review and how happy it makes me that "normies" as you say, are enjoying this show. When I watched it, I was SO relieved that it was a good show (as in generally liked), but I couldn't help but lament how many moments they had to skip or combine, or how the characters felt one dimensional to me because they were so well fleshed out in the manga, and changes like I couldnt believe they revealed Garp was Luffy's grandpa!! That doesn't happen until wayyy later! BUT, all that to say hearing a first time viewer's perspectives gives me a greater appreciation for the showrunners and all the people involved who worked to create an adaptation that everyone would enjoy and makes it easier for me to appreciate some of the changes. I don't know if you'd be into manga, but I hope you might give it a try. The world building of One Piece is so full that it's easy to get sucked in. I guess its worldwide success speaks for itself. Anyways, it makes me so happy to hear something I've loved for a long time get appreciated.❤ Also, I loved your hat. It made me laugh.
Im watching the fourth episode now, good original changes based of the manga story and characters, good for normies, causal whatever and enjoyable for all of us I think. Nami looks the great ¬¬ 💌
I've been a pretty big One Piece fan since middle school and still am(current manga stuff has been fantastic), and I have to say this adaptation has been shockingly good. I say shockingly because I was heavily skeptical, especially after the first trailer and it was upon the positive word of mouth that I checked it out. While it does have some problems, in general it is doing what a great adaptation should be, making meaningful changes to fit the medium while keeping the core/ spirit of the series. And a lot of that boils down to the cast. Holy crap, they are excellent. Whoever was the casting director deserves a platinum medal. The guy the got for Luffy is PERFECT. A great combination of the original character while making the character their own. The same could be said for Nami, Usopp, Zorro, and Sanji. I get the sense that the cast, crew, showrunners all cared. Oda supervising was great as well. It is a very surreal experience to see a good American live action anime adaptation(outside Edge of Tomorrow) and for One Piece, what a world I live in where this series is great and Ahsoka, Rings of Power and Wheel of Time are either meh/ terrible. But One Piece gets a good live action adaptation.
They absolutely knocked it out of the park with this show. The one piece is REAL!!! If you like The characters now Greg wait until you get too episode 7! There’s an iconic scene with Nami & Luffy that’ll make even the normies cry!
Thank you thank you thank you for sharing your experience with this show. I’m a long time fan of the manga, and it’s so validating to hear so many people enjoying the same goofy characters I’ve loved for years.
As someone who got pretty deep into One Piece (around 200 chapters, I think), this show is quite faithful to the characters and world of the original. The actors, sets and costumes all feel unapologetically reverent to the manga. It feels like a project from people passionate about the source material.
The biggest weakness of the show is the relatively short amount of time the main characters have to build their relationships, compared to the anime and manga. If you can just accept that they become friends that easily, the rest of the show is really fun and satisfying. Luffy can be annoying in the anime, but Iñaki Godoy does an amazing job of maintaining his enthusiasm without letting his naivete become cringey.
As a one piece fan we were all expecting this show to be absolutely HORRIBLE like most live action adaptations of animated series. The bar was LOW and the live action doing well is a welcome surprise. Not to mention this is only season 1, they were still finding their footing so its likely future season will be even better. I wholly agree with you that a live action version of a series like one piece should be mostly made for people who wouldn't get into the anime in the first place due any number of reasons and I think while the show doesn't do this as well as it could it still does it well. I agree with your criticism of the show having a lot of style clashes when it comes to the design of things like clothing and the hair colors being a bit too bright for a live action, especially compared to the environment. Wish they would have switched those colors around, having the environments be more colorful. It's an example of what I mean when I said it could have leaned more towards consistent tone but its not bad.
I want to correct you on one thing, and that's 'villain' vs 'antagonist'. In One Piece, few characters are true villains. I won't spoil anything but unless you saw them kill somebody without a good reason or the backing of the law, they probably weren't a villain. At most, they were an antagonist. And in One Piece, a villain can become an antagonist, and an antagonist can become an ally. It's pretty fluid.
For years I was put off of One Piece that it just wasn't an artwork that appealed to me. So glad I was introduced to at least watch the first season of the anime. But I've been scared to continue because of how long it is. Its been years since I watched it but now after seeing the live action, I really need to go back and start watching the anime all over again and continue this time. (Until more live action comes out, I haven't been this excited for something in a while). I can not say enough also how great this live action is. I had almost given up on much of recent Hollywood. I just felt it had lost its charm, magic and talent but to see these new actors, the filming/lighting/angles, the music, the choreography, the story pacing, the costumes (I could nit pick but very little, they did well with what they had access to.) This series is an amazing and talented piece of art (As weird as it is in story and costumes. I really appreciated all that it is.). My heart was so happy I could cry at just the work that has gone into this, that it is that Amazing. It gave me a feeling of joy watching something I didn't realized I missed!! Its a good fun watch. I pray people who never gave One Piece a chance, who just want a heartfelt, good serving of fun and adventure series a chance. Just watch it and enjoy all the depth and joy this gives! I cried in episode 6, so good, so much heart. I have never enjoyed a live series more! I have respect for all five of the main crew, they played their characters perfectly and didn't feel cold, dry or flat. I fell in love with Live Action Mihawk, Buggy, Chef Zeff, Garp and Shanks. I may just be a sucker for their voices but they just clicked as a "Ooooo, that's a good fit. Love their voice and acting
I’m a huge fan of the manga. Have been for over 10 years now. Even from my perspective this live action adaptation is fantastic! I am so thrilled One Piece got green lit for season 2.
I can't believe that a show with a guy that has stretchy arms was done better than Cowboy Bebop which has visuals that are easier to adapt in Live Action. But there's still a chance to see Luffy defeat the Patriarchy in future episodes.
@7:20 you just explained structure of one piece as a whole in the animanga. Each of the plots, arcs are self contained but is very beautifully and organically woven into a larger narrative of the saga it is in building up to something big, through foreshadowing, revealing the mystery piece by piece and at the same time telling very person stories which are character driven, and all of this is fulfilling in itself in short term and long term experience, but there is a sliw but constant progression in the overarching plot and mystery of the show overall which only comes to fruition when the series ends after may be 1500 chapters. And i didn't even mention the detailed, intricate, world building both geographically with multiple cultures, local and global histories, deep nuanced multifaceted social n socio-economic discussion on many aspects through the plot, different characters, their different approaches and perspectives.
Something to note is that even the manga is known for its wackiness. It's goofy even by anime standards. So even if they tone it down to make it bearable in live action format, it's still gonna be crazier than other shows. Not because it's an anime adaptation, but because it's a One Piece adaptation. The author said he specifically gave his protagonist funny rubber power because he'd quickly grow bored of drawing a main character with some edgy cool looking ability. Though I wish they'd toned it down even further for some parts, it is a bit much sometimes, like the Black Cat pirates hissing and stuff.
As a fan of the anime: It kept the spirit of the original source so well eventhou it jubbled the events a good bit. Good example is that we wouldn't even know about Garp at this point. But I fully understand that change and yes it IS to get the normies invested. Just imagine if the whole first season we would just see marines that want to capture anyone that dares call themselves a pirate regardless of their actions. The show has good and bad marines same goes for pirates and it needed to establish that to hook people.
I'm still shocked that this is the live action adaptation that worked. The source material is so zany, I thought this was gonna be a total rainbow pukefest of ridiculousness. But they seem to have nailed it, and that's awesome! The only other good adaptation of a manga (technically it was a light novel first) that I can think of was Edge of Tomorrow, but that show is a freakin' unicorn in the industry. And it's better than the source material, which is even rarer.
I would add the Ruroni Kenshin movies and the Kingdom movies, if we're including films. Maybe Alice in Borderland should make the list, but I haven't read the manga for that so I can't say for sure; I just thought it was pretty good. But I can't think of any other live adaptions of manga/anime that were decent off the top of my head.
This live action adaptation might not be for everyone and that's okay! So many more shows and stuff out there! And for those who stayed and for the "normies" this show did a fantastic job to be easily digestable, while retaining the rich and similar flavor- to the original. I am a One Piece fan but oh my god does the anime have serious pacing issues. I think because the live action was more restricted they had to get more creative and focus on the most important parts. A lot was cut, but Oda did approve the changes that were made. And hey if you want to read or see the full story... welp you can. However not everyone will have the time to catch up on over 1000 chapters/ episodes of content. Nor do some people like the animated medium. So bravo to the people, directors, producers (Oda), staff, crew member and actors for giving it there all and doing an amazing job to put out an amazing product. Looking forward to season 2!!!
I know some casuals who decided to now get into the manga and anime especially now that a season 2 is on the horizon in maybe 2 years. 2 years to get up to date with the story.
I've read the manga fully. You mention the idea that the adaptation is manga -> anime -> live action. But the show runner Matt Owen's confirmed they're adapting from the manga directly (which is evident from some of the censorship the anime does that the live action doesn't). Adapting right from the manga is a very smart move. The anime gets extrodnarily bad at times with some of the changes or filler it puts in ruining some story lines. But going right off the manga is a perfect move to not repeat their mistakes.
I'm on episode 315 of the anime...Luffy is still looking for crew members. He is about to pick up his 8th and 9th crew members...after losing the second member to officially join the crew (This member is in the live-action, hiding in plain sight).
I loved the show, but I watched the anime. I’m glad you liked it. The arc this Netflix season portrays what happens in about 60 episodes in the anime. More and different stuff happens , but it works in this Netflix version. I have no idea how they are gonna deal with a bunch of the continuity stuff later, but only time will tell.
1 minute in and I’m wondering why Wheel of time and Ashoka should steer towards their main audience but One piece shouldn’t is kinda absurd. Why wouldn’t they want to aim at the fans or the 2 highest selling comic book of all time???? Also it’s not an “adaptation of an adaptation” it’s just adapting the story of One piece
I would say I'm a One Piece fan that jumped off the series because the length got to me, but I think this Series is a really good adaptation of the beginning. They make a lot of meaningful changes that adds value for people who already watched the anime and/or read the manga. Like they changed the battle against Kuro and gave him a PG Slasher Villain moment in Episode 4 that played out differently from the Anime. So I recommend that if you wanna pick up the anime after the Live-Action then start again from the beginning. There's a lot to appreciate that isn't in the Live Action.
I never understand that way of think "oh its too long" "oh its too much of a commitment", mate its entertainment if you don't like it don't watch it if you like it watch it, you don't have a time limit you can just enjoy it in your own time its not going to be a part time job lol just watch it when you want to watch it how is that so hard its not a fucking job lol its almost like you just watch shows to finish them makes no sense its like not having a slice of pizza because you can't finish the whole pizza...... You can just warm up the rest later and in this case the pizza never goes off.
@@concretehippogaming Well, it's that and the fact that I found a lot of events in the story to be so formulaic and samey that I found them boring. Straw Hats arrive at a new Island, they have a bit of fun then learn the dark side of the island, we see the back story about the Island's dictator, we get a sad backstory, Luffy goes to fight the dictator. I know it's not all of them but it really started to feel like that after the time skip. And the anime's pacing tired me out, I find the Manga didn't do anything for me either.
I’m a long time anime and manga fan but One Piece was something I really couldn’t get into. I tried for a looong time! But the Netflix live action made me totally into it now. I guess I really like this toned down Luffy, and really got into it. Everything I love about anime/manga I find in this show so I’m hoping for more amazing seasons - but high quality seasons. I hope it continues to be consistently good and not going the Game of Thrones route.
You'll be buying a straw hat soon enough, don't you worry. If this show breaks you, the anime and manga will tear you to shreds It's goofy and fun, and then it punches you in the gut so hard, your kids will feel it. This series covers about 45 episodes, and the Garp reveal is actually something of a spoiler as it doesn't come for another 350 episodes in the anime
Tbh Anime Live Action was always possible. They just had to get the right FEELING for it. Its easier to adapt western comics cause they're more "realistic" and the creators almost never have a hand in the adaptions. So with proper PASSION and SFX it can be done. A bunch of fans have made their own live action anime that looks INSANE💯🔥 And it also helps when you have the Mangaka ON BOARD😂. Oda was in charge of the adapatation and told them to reshoot multiple scenes so it makes sense why it was that good. I haven't watched it yet but as someone who hasnt watched the anime cause its TOO LONG😭💀🤦♂️ but played the some games ajd know the gist of the story I am interested in checking this out😂💯🙏
We really did not like the anime, and expected to be hate-watching this live-action version - but ended up absolutely loving it as one of the best TV shows we've seen in a long while. Will probably binge it again, and we're anxiously awaiting season 2 ... but still not a fan of the anime.
Been a big fan of One Piece since 2007 when I was 20. If you watch the anime, I definitely recommend the Japanese version with subtitles, but more importantly, after about episode 325ish the pacing becomes so atrocious that I'd recommend switching over to the color version of the manga. (The bad anime pacing has nothing to do with the quality of the story itself and everything to do with the anime studio padding out episodes with stare downs, long pans over nothing, repeated flashbacks, and a whole lot of repetition in general to buy themselves time while Eiichiro Oda continues to create his work.) Also, I may or may not be the voice of Zoro in RUclipsr Ryu Ematsu's fandubbed version of the manga.
This season covers 45 eps of the anime, thats 20ish hours condensed to 7.5hrs/8 eps...and its great how people are transitioning to the anime's first 45 eps after this season.
I am a huge fan of the one piece anime/ manga and been reading/ watching it for about 13 years now, and I got to say that while the live action wasn't perfect it was good. There were 2 big problems with this adaptation for me which are pacing and changes to the story which make it so that the emotional emotional scenes didn't hit as hard. Now to be clear at some point in the adaptation they had better pacing than the original material and good changes but it was because as the meme goes one piece get good after " " episodes the start of one piece is kind of weak and it's only get better after they hit episode 19 in the anime or 5 in netflix's live action. Once they hit the good materials of the manga the fast pacing, cutting and changing started to feel bad since they lowered the impact of a lot of great scenes compared to the manga. That been said this adaptation is not made for old fans in mind Oda wanted one piece to hit the west and get as big as Naruto or Dragon ball and with the overwhelming positive response the live action got and casuals like you that watched it and enjoyed it and got the name of the show out there it definitely did an amazing job.
As a long time anime fan, I could never get into OP because the art style doesn't do it for me. This live-action version bridges the gap for me to enjoy the story and characters Oda created. I still won't bother trying to watch the anime or read the manga, so here's hoping for a good follow up with more LAOP seasons!
I don't really agree with the "adaptation of an adaptation" framing. Netflix Piece is based on the manga more than it is on the anime. They've kept some things intact that the anime changed (like Zeff's leg) and the showrunner and at least one of the writers are manga readers. They gave Eichiro Oda input and creative control on this thing; not Toei. There are other things too, like regularly using outfits from manga supplementary materials that were never in the anime. The appearance of Mr. 7 is similar.
One piece is almost an exact replica of the manga series almost scene for scene word for word its fucking amazing especially for the fans of that work like my self. Not what the shitty rings of power tried to do and this show does a great job for the normies with its incredible story telling and great World building its an absolute Amazing Show and more need to follow suit. Looking at you Disney. But yea this show is phenomenal for Normies and Fans this show its tied with House of the Dragons for how true to the source material it is
I'm sorry man this show was not made for normies it's made so normies can follow it but it's made for the real die hard fans it's done so well most scenes are exactly like the manga series it's kinda crazy how much they are alike exactly like HOTD
“One piece isn’t political” ahhh yeah sweet summer child east blue is definitely the most subtle, though all the arch’s hide the messages pretty well, but if there’s one thing One Piece is not it’s “not political” don’t get me wrong it’s plenty enjoyable while ignoring the themes and messages Oda baked into everything but they are for sure there.
@@thefanwithoutaface8105 I mean.... it is about politics though? like literally the core of one piece is anarchism = good authoritarianism = bad. Like thats boiled down a lot but Dragons ship is named after Fidel Castro's and Oda had pictures of I think Che Guevara hanging on his wall for years, he's really not subtle about his politics and he's not even a little afraid to put them in his story they are like I said the literal core of it. Just like every arc with fishmen is commentary about race relations basically every Island is a microcosm of the greater conflict between pirates and freedom vs corrupt authority figures. Of course Oda's not a dumbass so he knows that not all anarchism is good or all anarchists are good so thats when we get Black Beard who is a dark reflection of Luffy ie dark reflection of anarchism highlighting some of the internal flaws that have to be overcome, which of course they will in story when Luffy beats black beard.
@@thefanwithoutaface8105 No like have you actually read the manga or seen the anime? like in east blue its not as obvious but I refuse to believe someone with a brain could read the fishman Island arc or the Fisher tiger back stories and not see the clear race analogues. Like they can be ignored if you want while reading and you'll still have an ok time but to say they aren't there is self deluding. As for the anarchism vs authoritarianism thats literally baked into everything but I guess it really picks up in the first arch of the grandline so live action only might not get it yet.
@@thefanwithoutaface8105 I mean for fucks sake basically the entire fan base agrees that the culmination of the story will be Luffy overthrowing the world government how do you see a story ending on overthrowing a government that controls the world run by nepotistic slugs that wear space helmets so they don't breath the same air as the lowly ground dwellers who they use as slaves and not think maybe the author is putting in some political messaging? Assuming you've actually read or watched beyond east blue.
Major props to the actor who plays Luffy. His enthusiasm is so infectious, I'd find myself grinning whenever he was on screen.
The Will of D is strong with this one...
SUCCESSFUL.
From the pictures, I originally thought he looked miscast, because he doesn't have the very straight and limp hair that characterizes Luffy, but he's pulling it off. It's not distracting and his acting pulls you in.
He manages to be cheerful & happy-go-lucky without being cringeworthy & obnoxious.
@@vlo4829bro he looks exactly like luffy what you talking about 😂
The main reason why this is an actually good adaptation is because the original creator of one piece basically told them what they could, and could not do, and basically was a watchdog making sure they didn’t screw with it so you can think oda for that
Not only: At least one of the showrunners is an absolute fan who wanted the project to prevent someone else from ruining it.
Right on. He said he was a GUARD DOG. None of the Hollywood nonsense. Well done.
He is against 'woke' as well.
Exactly. I was hoping normies gonna like it.
I’m so glad you liked it! I’m a huge One Piece fan and I loved the live action. I think they nailed the characters while making the entire show much more digestible for new fans. Sure I have my gripes but the heart and soul of the original story are undeniable present. I hope it gets a couple seasons. 😊
What were your gripes?
One Piece can be a pretty dark and serious world til Luffy shows up. :)
I promise I will not cry when the Going Mary sinks.... oh who am I kidding of course I will
You have expressed my EXACT feelings while watching the show! I've had friends telling me to get into One Piece for years but the amount of content was just too daunting and this was the perfect introduction. I could also feel the love for the OG show and manga working together with the new medium instead of against it. 11/10 would recommend to anyone and everyone who likes a good time.
Where Wheel of Time defecates all over the source material...One Piece embraced it.
So glad Oda remained in creative control.
These episodes definitely were interesting, I'm glad to say that this was one of the better live action adaptions.
Wow didn’t notice the cinematography that much aside from a couple of scenes but that’s cool to think about
Yup this is a live action medium to share the story of one piece which we love to normie viewers, glad you liked it too
I'm just glad people are genuinely enjoying it despite not knowing the anime/manga
Season 2 is ON, baby!!!
This is the first time I've noticed that the first half is almost *entirely* goofball stuff. When he said "It doesn't take itself seriously and it's just here to have fun" I was in solid [wtf mode] for about 5 seconds before realizing... yeah... they actually did that in the live action and it's genius...
Yes. Yes it does work.
Stretchy arms are more deadly than Disney Star Wars Laser Swords
I could never get into the anime, the art style just kills it for me. But the live action has me hooked - I love almost everything about it!
So fun fact, it took me 3 times to get into it because of the animation/ acting. I was late to the party. It was not even within the same year.
I'm a newbie and loved it, it absolutely works for casuals
Great show.
Glad to see you enjoying OP. I'll be here for you ep 5-8 video no matter what.
As a fan that hasn't watched it, I'll take your word for it and thank you for watching
Hey Greg. I recommend shirts from “Pair of Thieves”
The shirt that you wore in this episode has too much glare.
-fellow black shirt enthusiasts.
Nami looks the great ¬¬
💌
Well-dressed blonde fellow WITHOUT A CIG?
They absolutely knocked it out of the park with this show. The one piece is REAL!!!
If you like The characters now Greg wait until you get too episode 7! There’s an iconic scene with Nami & Luffy that’ll make even the normies cry!
Dude you are killing it with this series
The live action actually adapted a full story arc per episode so each episode was literally like an adaptation of an entire 12 or 20 episode in anime.
As a One Piece fan, it’s a great adaptation with only a couple of flaws. ❤ it!
The fact that you have that kinda gardening hat is sus……you a fan, do not lie to me!
GOMU GOMU FIRST
If you liked this, you should see the 2008 speed racer and 2012 ace attorney films.
In the anime, Garp being Luffy’s grandpa was revealed around episode 300.
Netflix made Cuties and I will never financially support that company ever again.
Joining Alita Battle Angel and Edge of Tomorow on the throne of good anime adaptations.
Lol thank gawd this review is not one hour plus long. I will actually watch this.
I get the feeling that the camera work is being utilized to recreate anime and manga pov's to bridge the gap between mediums.
The backstory of hoe Luffy gets (the first half of) his crew.
Please do second half
it was a fun seafearing romp
I’m sorry about the wheel of time thing. My heart feels for you
Also somewhere around realeas of live adaptation One Piece released db version up to ep 1000. Original dub ended somewhere after 200-300 I belive.
as the manga reader obviously i hate some of their decision they made. But i am happy that LA can attract non fans. cant wait for eps 5-8 review
If this show breaks you, the anime and manga will tear you to shreds
It's goofy and fun, and then it punches you in the gut so hard, your kids will feel it.
This series covers about 45 episodes, and the Garp reveal is actually something of a spoiler as it doesn't come for another 350 episodes in the anime
Boys, Generation V, One Piece. Top 3 LA currently.
I’m not gonna go buy a straw hat.
After a couple of seasons
I bought a straw hat.
Tbh Anime Live Action was always possible. They just had to get the right FEELING for it. Its easier to adapt western comics cause they're more "realistic" and the creators almost never have a hand in the adaptions. So with proper PASSION and SFX it can be done. A bunch of fans have made their own live action anime that looks INSANE💯🔥
And it also helps when you have the Mangaka ON BOARD😂. Oda was in charge of the adapatation and told them to reshoot multiple scenes so it makes sense why it was that good.
I haven't watched it yet but as someone who hasnt watched the anime cause its TOO LONG😭💀🤦♂️ but played the some games ajd know the gist of the story I am interested in checking this out😂💯🙏
9:46 not on netflix in my country -.-
We really did not like the anime, and expected to be hate-watching this live-action version - but ended up absolutely loving it as one of the best TV shows we've seen in a long while. Will probably binge it again, and we're anxiously awaiting season 2 ... but still not a fan of the anime.
The manga is a lot easier to digest. You could try checking out a few chapters. There’s a digitally colored version which is amazing too
5-8 are even better 😊
as a one piece anime fan I like the live action I can't wait for season 2
Been a big fan of One Piece since 2007 when I was 20. If you watch the anime, I definitely recommend the Japanese version with subtitles, but more importantly, after about episode 325ish the pacing becomes so atrocious that I'd recommend switching over to the color version of the manga. (The bad anime pacing has nothing to do with the quality of the story itself and everything to do with the anime studio padding out episodes with stare downs, long pans over nothing, repeated flashbacks, and a whole lot of repetition in general to buy themselves time while Eiichiro Oda continues to create his work.)
Also, I may or may not be the voice of Zoro in RUclipsr Ryu Ematsu's fandubbed version of the manga.
Oda is gonna go down in history as the greatest author of our time. Just going to be years before main stream recognizing him
Screw the mainstream! They ruin everything they get their filthy claws on!
As an anime One Piece watcher, who is close to 300 episodes in, I respectfully disagree.
the story of the one piece will be that of a odyssey @@officialnoonon
This season covers 45 eps of the anime, thats 20ish hours condensed to 7.5hrs/8 eps...and its great how people are transitioning to the anime's first 45 eps after this season.
the amount of girls simping on mackenyu after this speaks a lot on normies getting into one piece.😅
Netflix one piece is an adaptation of the manga, not the anime. According to the director and the producer
At least we still have rule 34.
Uuuuuummmmm Nami doesn't have Big Boobas sooooo it's woke checkmate Mr. Owen 😂😂😂
but Nami doesn't have big boobas in the pre-time skip tho? I think, I don't know honestly, it's been a long time
@@NaniTheFrick from what I've seen she got boobas for days but I was also making a joke
She has big boobas in the show tho
Dude the anime is great. It is slow though.
garp isnt a villian he is a character thats it u will see
One piece is almost an exact replica of the manga series almost scene for scene word for word its fucking amazing especially for the fans of that work like my self.
He means that it uses political themes rather than being about politics which is more akin to propoganda.
@@kain6996 No it isn't that's your interpretation.
That's called using him as Inspiration, not trying to lecture people on politics.
