The reason why you need a map to the Grand Line is because it is bordered on both sides by what are called Calm Belts. There is no wind so a ship can't move and it is filled with giant sea beasts. Venturing into a Calm Belt is essentially a death sentence. It's something they really should have explained in the show because the Calm Belts are why the Grand Line is how it is. You just can't go a direction and get to it. There are specific points it has to be entered. I'm hoping they go into this in Season 2 with Loguetown and Reverse Mountain. But yeah, in the live action it is a plot hole because they left out the information on the Calm Belts.

@@skywardsword2804 You may be right, but also the map to the Grand Line wasn't as big as a plot point either if I'm remembering correctly. It was something that they just kind of grabbed. But since they made it the primary MacGuffin of the series, they should have stuck in the Calm Betl explanation to let the audience know why it was so important. Also, cutting out Krieg while understandable, does lose the arc that shows how dangerous and insane the Grand Line is.

The map in the manga wasn’t even a grand line map it was a treasure map Buggy had. The grand line map was just the plot device they use in the live action to make the story cohesive. The manga and anime was really more villain of the week with little connecting the arcs with the exception of luffy recruiting new crew members and moving through the east blue. Also it’s an adventure story and luffy doesn’t care where he goes as long as at the end he becomes the king of the pirates so adding something they needed to move forward was probably a good thing.

I agree with you on the devil fruit rules, but NOT the other superhuman abilities rules. The show plants little easter eggs throughout the season to make you more and more curious about how the world operates: the warlords, the snails, baroque works, the fish men, even the grand line...it's not really meant to be explained right off the bat, but to invoke your curiosity and make you continuously question what you think you know.
    SPOILER ALERT:
There is indeed a whole other "magic system" apart from the devil fruits, but it doesn't really get explained until much later in the story. Unlike devil fruits, this particular system is actually achievable by anyone through hard work and training; it's the same one that allows Garp to beat up Luffy, Mihawk to slice ships in half, and Shanks to make sea monsters go away with a stare. It's important because it establishes that devil fruit users, despite being legitimate threats, are not invincible or all-powerful. In fact, those devil fruit users that become overly arrogant with their abilities are often the first ones to get annihilated in the grand line for that reason!

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the live action, the fight scenes in general were already much more subdued compared to the anime equivalent making them seem way less grand in scale (and importance). So how could you successfully adapt even bigger fights without reducing the wow factor?
Thinking about it you might be able to draw comparisons of the powers in One Piece to a show like Doom Patrol or Heroes or even Marvel. Doom Patrol has Jane, "The Blob" and girl who manifests her dreams or whatever. Heroes has Hiro, the woman with the ice powers Jessica I think, earthquake guy, and so on.

Not that spectacle isn't important, but live action just can't compare to animation or comics in that regard because there are too many restrictions. I have seen many live action shows and movies with borderline terrible effects, but the character writing more than made up for it, so I was never really disappointed.

Sanji is my favorite character too! I'm SO happy the direction they took his character in this show rather than his over the top womanizer personality he has in the manga and show. I'm glad he's more of a suave speaker and can easily solve problems with a friendly conversation or homemade meal. I'm so excited to see where they take this show and I couldn't be happier they did One Piece justice! You can tell Oda was heavily involved to make sure of it.

For the Map, it'll get clarified during Season 2. But for geographical reasons that have yet to be explained (it was teased very subtly though), you physically can't just go to the grandline. You'll die immediately. The map shows you where the entrance is, and how to navigate it. Once we get to season 2 and you see how they get into the grandline you'll be like ahhhhh It see why you needed a map.

The map to the Grand Line is not a big deal in the original if I remember right. But seems like they wanted a plot element that would streamline things plotwise. In the original every island had multiple chapters/episodes to build up what was going on there so the map plot seemed to be a convenient way to put the ball rolling.
Also the devil fruit powers don't instantly disappear from splashes of water, you need to be submerged. The author has said something like "the water needs to be waist deep" or something for it to sap your energy. When Arlong splashed water to Luffy I think it was supposed to be that the strength of the fast and thereby sharp water droplets actally made some damage on impact. Though in live action it seems that it actually took his energy. In the original the fishmen shoot water like that but they're a bit more like sharp projectiles.

  • @whade62000

There IS no map in the anime. (Okay fine there's a brief scene when Nami's looking or one and finds a note foreshadowing Buggy instead and never mentions it again.) The grand line map is what is called a MacGuffin, it's a narrative tool to tie events together and explain why characters move from A to B if you start thinking about it for sec, but it barely even matters for the story.

  • @XLevelmanX
    @XLevelmanX 11 месяцев назад +4

The devil fruit rules were explained a little messy. Basically the deeper you are in STANDING water the weaker you will be. Up to your ankles you can feel it, knees you are getting real weak, anything past the waist and most of your energy is taken from you. This does not mean you cant use your devil fruit, it just means you cant move. This can be any liquid too i believe. Lemonade, pool water, hot springs.
The splash that arlong tossed at luffy was supposed to show a fishman karate technique where a few drops of water become powerful projectiles. It doesnt weaken luffy, Probably just surprises him. That scene was a bit odd with how things happened though it did look like that, ill just chock it up to luffy not being all that there because he was still in shock from zoro. But could've definitely been written a little better to explain those things.

    • @gregowen2022
      @gregowen2022  11 месяцев назад +2

Ah, that makes more sense. I think Nami added to the confusion when she refers to him as a “devil fruit eater” right after the splash and Luffy is disoriented. It really drew focus on the whole devil fruit idea.

  • @eon5878
    @eon5878 11 месяцев назад +1

Some clarification of a few of your questions:
It’s less a map to the Grand Line and more a map to the *entrance* of the Grand Line. Yes it circles the globe, but it can’t be entered from the side because it’s sandwiched between the “Calm Belts” which are strips of still sea where wind doesn’t blow and a nest for the Sea Beasts. That mountain Nami pointed out at the end where the river flows upward is the only entrance to the Grand Line, it’s where they need to go.
How much a Devil Fruit user is weakened by water depends on how much water they’re submerged in. They’re not significantly weakened until the water gets up to their knees. It’s also not explained but important to note that only standing water weakens them, not moving water like rain or waves, so despite how it looks, splashing them doesn’t actually do anything. That thing with Arlong was one of his moves from the manga “Water Shot” where he flings water from his hand with the force of a bullet, which is why Luffy flew back like that.
And at this point in the story, you don’t know how non-Devil Fruit users can do what they do, but there is more than one power system in this world. For the sake of spoilers I won’t go into one of them, but it explain things like Shanks’s glare and Garp’s strength. Another power system is swordsmanship, which in the world of one piece is a lot more than swinging around blades. Skilled swordsman can send “flying slashes” like the one Mihawk used to cut Krieg’s ship in half. There’s also another power system that involves training the body to achieve superhuman feats, it’s normally taught to marines but characters like Kuro seem to have taken advantage of it, which is where his speed comes from. You’ll also learn about that one later on in the story.
    Sorry for the long read.

One thing that may help to explain the devil fruit + water things is that moving water (and splatter/spray) has **less** of an effect on fruit-users, and that fishmen have a kind of hydrokinesis, though the live-action didn't really go into that much

So, the seawater issue is not a huge thing in the anime/manga. One little splash does not weaken the DF user. They have to be exposed to a lot of sea water for it to weaken them.
The other power issue, well, One Piece is a 1000+ episode anime/manga. The second power system is hinted at quite early, but isn't fully introduced until around episode 400 of the anime, and I'm not sure what chapter that is in the manga. I'll tell you if you want to know, but be warned for spoilers.
    SPOILERS BELOW!!!
The second power system is called Haki, and it doesn't become prevalent until much later on, but for the most part it's purpose is to give non DF users a way to keep up with DF users. It makes them much stronger, increases awareness, can negate some DF powers.

There is the devil fruit magic system, and there’s another magic system.
The live action show changed the weakness for the devil fruit a little bit. In the original comic you have to be submerged a certain amount to be weakened. Like you could be in a shower and rain but not a tub. It also applies to all bodies of water, not just the “Mother Ocean”
In the live action version it looks like splashes can affect you. So it was fully a live action mistake that Buggy wasn’t effected by the splash much in episode 2.

I have read a couple of one piece mangas (like 30) and I really enjoyed watching the show. There was so much to enjoy, the music was really good, like you said how every episode felt like it’s own story felt really satisfying, I really like how whenever we see someone’s wanted poster the person that is wanted gets rid of it somehow. I think it works really well compared to the mangas and I would say work really well if you have or haven’t read them (or seen the manga, and of course don’t know for sure but it seemed like that). And yeah most of my complains were just with the devil fruit system and how it works with the ocean, in the manga I’m pretty sure the rules are:
You lose the powers of the devil fruit while being wet
You sink like a rock in the ocean (and thereby you can’t swim)
(it was a while ago I read mangas so might not be 100% correct with the rules, but they are something like that)
Great show, really recommended for both anime/manga fans and those who has seen nothing of it :D

The water doesn’t actually take away/negate the devil fruit ability it really just drains your stamina so the more water (not just seawater) you are exposed to the faster and more steep the drain is. You sink because when totally submerged you basically instantly lose all your strength and can’t move and either be saved by someone else or die.

I'm so glad you liked it! Its awesome for me to see One Piece get this much attention! It's hilarious that you also made onigiri considering that's one of Zoro's signature moves. and using the leftovers to make it was very Sanji of you (Shoutout G8). So about the Grand Line map just know any knowledge that allows you to travel freely especially the Grand Line is highly restricted by the world government, so much so that you actually get their approval to travel there. also maps aren't super common in the One Piece world the sea is extremely dangerous, an average person is going to live their entire life on one island so pretty much only the Marines are going to have them since the Strawhat crew is the only pirate crew that I can think of that has a cartographer (Nami). Don't get me wrong every crew has a navigator, but once you get to the grand line you don't really use maps to travel island to island (this will be explained in season 2). About Garp and Mihawk there is another "magic system" so don't worry it didn't break any in universe rules it was just meant to be a mystery for new viewer just like in the source material where it didn't get explained for hundreds of chapters/episodes, and get ready for more mysteries because Oda never answers a mystery without introducing more. One Piece is like a hydra of mysteries, every answer creates more questions.

    @bad-people6510 10 месяцев назад +1

"How does Mihawk have superhuman reflexes and strength, how does Garp have superhuman reflexes and strength?"
They don't. It's just the nature of this world that the upper limits of human potential are much greater. Still very difficult to reach, but not a superpower in itself.
That said, more things may still be explained later, potentially much later. Thing about One Piece is set ups and pay offs can be separated by more than a decade sometimes.

So happy you enjoyed it! Did you tear up with the Nami reveal, when she's stabbing herself and Luffy steps in?
The things you thought were inconsistent are explained and the anime progresses, so expect it will as the show does, too.
The Grand Line (equator) is awash in their planets magnetic field so navigating it is impossible without both a map and a Log Pose (the plot of the next season). If you enter the Grand Line in the wrong place, the currents will destroy your ship. Also, around the meridian of the planet is a circular land mass, so to find entry to the other seas, you need the map to cross it. (Hence you get to see rivers flowing up mountains, as Nami hinted at.)
We'll also find out in Season Two that the other characters are using, in effect, what is Chi (Haki in the story). They can do some crazy shit with it, you got a taste with Mihawk.
You should look up Toni Toni Chopper and Nico Robin (my personal favorite character) as they'll drive season two. :)

It’s important to keep in mind is that Oda, the creator of one piece, likes to keep the fans in the dark. The idea is that you are basically on this journey with the strawhats so if they are unaware of something then as the reader or viewer so will you. This is why venturing the world is so important because every island will unlock a portion of knowledge. The fandom loves engaging in theories of what things could be and their meaning. Creating your own head-canon is part of what makes one piece so fun and engaging.

The fish-man slavery (and human slavery for that matter) in One Piece is part of the original source material. The complaint I hear about it, which I think is valid, is that they introduce that element too early. We didn't get that in Arlong Park, we got that information in a later arc that retroactively changes the context of Arlong Park and adds dimensions to it, as well as altering relationships with characters we haven't even introduced yet. It mostly, in the source, gets explored 20 or so arcs from where we're at and should we get that far, it threatens to undermine that arc a bit.

The map wasn't the main plot device in the source material and not nearly as rare as portrayed in the live action. They never got kidnapped or attacked 3 times over it.
I didn't like that change for the following reasons (MILD SPOILERS)...
    1. A regular compass works in the East Blue so finding the entrance to the Grandline should be anything but impossible. A map should just make it a lot easier.
    2. Maps become obsolete very soon.
    3. Buggy and Arlong both come from there so they should already know where it is. It's to the very south. Southwest from Loguetown to be exact. Maybe Buggy forgot or sucks at navigating but surely not Arlong.
    4. Arlong was loaded and had connections to the marines. How was he not able to get his hands on the map? (He wasn't after it in the anime/manga).

Here's the problem, up until Roguetown (which is the next arc) we knew very little about devil fruits and even less about the other magic systems that come into play later. Mihawk is boosted by one of these systems, which is called Haki, which is better explained much later on in the series. The thing that's good about that is that Mihawk doesn't really show up much, so he just is the mysterious powerful swordsman that works as a mentor/rival for Zoro. Garp also uses Haki, but really he's just incredibly strong, to the point of just being superhuman. Neither have a devil fruit, though

I'm not big on asparagus, but man that does look good.
Addressing some of your points in no particular order:
-In the manga, Sanji's attitude towards women is actually his main and only flaw.
It's played for laughs, and sometimes it does hit the mark, but more often than not you're just gonna sigh through his shenanigans.
On the other hand, if he didn't have that, he would almost be too perfect.
-There is indeed a very good reason you can't just sail directly into the Grand Line, imo they should've have taken the time to let Nami explain it.
-The show is adapted from a manga that was created in a time in which words like "woke" or "twitter" didn't exist.
It does get suprisingly political at times, but I never got the feeling the author was trying to force his ideals onto his readers.
-For Garp or Mihawk's strength, yeah that was one of my main concerns for a live adaptation. It reminds me of the first time I watched the movie Watchmen and got hella confused, not knowing that it was adapted from a comic book.
In this universe, even regular humans with no special powers can get crazy, ridiculously strong. You get used to it, but it's definitely easier to digest in an anime / comic format than in live action.

Asparagus can be tricky, but I assure you it was as good as it looked.
Unfortunately, live action has its limits, and I think that our brains simply expect certain things when looking at live actors, even if the setting is clearly a fantasy one. It’s so much easier to shrug your shoulders and just go along with crazy stuff when a cartoon character is doing it. Still excited for season 2, however. This new magic system and possibly sea beasts sounds cool!

2:26 - hahahaha, i never noticed that guy in the background, just continuing his drink while the fight goes on around him :D
6:32 - As for Sanji in the manga; total ladies man, but a nice respectful ladies man that simply tries too hard, but always has the best intentions, and while he does absolutely love the girls, ALL the girls, he isn't a creep about it, more like a megasimp with a heart of gold. This is especially clear in how he interacts with his wife. (no, its not the kind of spoiler for season 8 that you think it is ^^)
13:48 - Oh boy, you are going to wanna sit down for this one, since Haki, the powers separate from devil fruits, that Mihawk, Shanks and Garp use, in the manga, isn't explained until the equivalent of season 6! After the timeskip.

So seawater doesn't take away your devil fruit powers. It saps away your strength which is why you can't swim. Buggy's power doesn't really so much on strength as Luffy's does, so a little flash doesn't really affect him as much as luffy. Also, a splash isn't that big a deal as being partially/completely submerged.
The other stuff you mentioned (power system etc.) are all explained at different points when they matter. Essentially you are on a journey with Luffy who himself is learning all this as he goes so you learn as he learns about them. Just know everything you have pointed out will eventually be explained and there's payoffs attached to most/all of them so knowing too soon kind of makes things a little less impactful.

I am sure others explained why you need a map, about the whole calm belt thing, but it is also important to note the rarity of those maps, yes if the pirates had good mappers they would draw their own map, but why would they share it so others get to the one piece first ? Also, the marins absolutely don't want more pirates going to the grand line, so it makes sense that all maps of the grand line are only giving to marine personnels amd you actually can't find them in books, otherwise nami could've seen one in a book and redrew it for arlong, but instead she had to go on a solo mission to get this rare kind of map

The map thing will be clearly explained season 2 if it follows the manga/anime. As for the second issue, it’s intentionally shown that way to make the viewer guess. Yet, it is also theorized that we are seeing the story from Luffy’s perspective.

The way I see politics in fiction is like this:
Politics to serve the story - art (good worldbuilding / contains politics)
Story there to serve politics - propaganda / political (see the conversation surrounding the last few years of Star Trek)
An excellent example of this - see 'Hello Future Me' and his videos on writing revolutions in fantasy - revolutions are very political, but they make for excellent worldbuilding.
Also just finished the first book of 'The Hierarchy' by James Islington (fantasy book) and it contains a protagonist who experiences colonialism by an oppressive empire - a very political subject, but it wasn't a commentary on real-world politics, it just made the story so much better.

The confusing world stays as such until they are actually close to entering the grandline. You will know just as much as the crew knows.
They might explain it in season 2. Or you can keep reading this comment.
Large maps in one piece are not very common, theres maps that outline some islands and part of the seas but nothing as grand a map of the entire east blue perse.
The grandline is in between whats called the calm belt where there is no wind and is infested with sea kings. The entrance to the grandline is a one way river. Hence, "no one comes back from the grandline".
Think of the grandline as a long strip of ocean that goes around the whole world filled with islands and civilizations that are disconnected from the rest of the world outside the grandline.
How mihawk enters and exits the grandline is up for you to imagine. Given his godlike strength, it shouldnt be too hard to get creative.

You may not have meant to do this, but I like how you made onigiri beside the bluefin tuna with sauteed asparagus. Onigiri, while it is a name for a food, also meant "demon slashing," name for one of Zoro's moves in the anime and manga with the whole name being Santouryu: Onigiri meaning Three-Swords Style: Demon Slashing.
Your dish reminds me of Zoro and Sanji bickering at each other.😂

Great video, and while a little late I want to explain/comment in some of your points (map, woke, devil fruit) trying to keep it spoiler free.
    - Map: this will be explained better in the end of the 1st or start of the 2nd episode of the next season, but there is only one entry to the grand line and it is kinda dangerous. One cant just travel directly into it due to the calm belt, an area paralel to the grand line with no wind and full of monsters. That is why the map is necessary. Also people going from one sea to another is rare due to it
Power: for now understand that training and willpower can make you superhuman in this world. For devil fruits I dislike how Buggy commented on sea water since its more that it drains one of their strenght, so being in the water with your feet for example is not enough to take away your power, but once submerged a devil fruit user is hopeless. For the Arlong scene, in the original he was an attack that he trown water qith the strenght of a shotgun shot, so that scene would be a combination of being splashed and taking a massive hit
Woke: I agree with your comments here. One Piece as a story will talk about these themes, even the racism and slavery will be explored further - but Oda does show the bad on both sides, for example Arlong is part of the cycle of hate and instead of just bashing on those in power Oda show that is important to break that cycle, that being just as hategul dont make you better or justified, just make you the same as the one you hate. And on that note there will be an Okama (slang for gay person that uses woman clothes) in the next season that is a fan favorite, very importsnt in the future and that will be divisive for people that dont know the source material but its not there to shove a message down our throates, they are there because they ate a good character that makes sense (plus created in 2000 way before all this political discourse)

Idk if you're going to read this but I'll just say it anyway.
One Piece World as already explained to you by many people is divided into 4 quadrants called Blues(North, South, West, East).
The thing that divides this spherical world into 4 are the *Red Line* (Super Continent) and the *Grand Line* (band of sea, split into two parts because the Red Line cuts it in half).
Surrounding the Grand Line on both sides are the *Calm Belts.* They're called the Calm Belts because of how usually calm they are. No wind and water currents. Because of this, they are where Sea Kings(Sea Beasts like the one that ate Shanks' arm) usually dwell and breed.
Getting past the Calm Belt is usually impossible in an age where majority of boats still uses sails and along with the threat of Sea Kings, only an idiot or somebody confident in their strength would even try.
As for the magic system. Devil Fruits Users are weak to standing/still water. Getting submerged usually weakens them to the point of being incapable to even move. Moving water like rain or splash usually don't weaken them at all.
Other than the standard weakness to water(any water not just seawater) they're also either immune or weak to certain things because of their devil fruit.
Like Luffy being basically immune to blunt damage but very vulnerable to piercing and slashing which in contrast Buggy is immune to piercing and slashing but blunt damage is good against him.
As for the unusual feats of strength for certain characters, this is because of another power system but also because the vast difference of the capability and physical limits of the humans in the One Piece world compared to ours.
There's legit human characters(no fruits or other power) that are just physically gigantic, strong and unusually tough. In fact humans of this world are weirder in that there's many that you would consider to be subspecies that has weird traits like long arms, long legs, third eyes etc.
Anyway as I mention, there's another power system, it's called Haki. This is a power system that is used by majority of the characters especially the strongest ones.
Mihawk and Garp are representative of the "strongest" characters in the story so it makes sense that they know of and use it. It's also a hint that Shanks who could use it is just as strong or stronger.

  • @allmightjunior6917
    @allmightjunior6917 9 месяцев назад

As for mihawk and garp, yes there is another "magic system" it's called haki, it can be learned by anyone, and it is the one thing that can hurt devil fruit users, like luffy who is made of rubber, he can't feel normal hits, but when it's infused with haki, you can hurt him, unfortunately it will take time until it is explained in the story, but the instances where it was shown in the show are these : when garp manages to beat luffy and throw a canon ball at him, when mihawk was able to see bullets and cut them as well as cutting a ship from distance, and the one that everyone missed, when shanks managed to scare away the sea beast by a certain scary look those were all instances of using haki, but it unfortunately it will only be explained late in the show

All your questions especially about Garp and Mihawk's strength is venturing to spoiler territory. In fact that will also explain Shank's "power" on how he scared off the Sea King. That is how Oda writes. He does alot oof forshadowing and he will never forget what he foreshadows hundreds of episodes later.

Buggy was affected, that's why he and Luffy were crawling at the same speed after the thing they hold dearest. And there is more at work beyond Devil Fruits, but it isn't until we hit in the 400s of chapters and episodes before we see it explained. Mihawk, Garp, Shanks, they are shown as just ridiculously strong people til it gets explained

Funny, because I saw another reactor complaining about Buggy going for the map in all four being too goofy XD Well, he goes in all four towards the map because he's been weakened.

It's not a map to but a map of the Grand Line. You won't understand why they needed one until you see it.
There are only two main rules for a devil fruit: 1. The Sea steals your stamina. 2. You cannot swim. In the manga, 1 branches out to any natural standing body of water. Everything that seems throw away or not well put together will make more sense as the story goes on.
Sanji and Ussop get ton of development don't worry 😁

The reason Luffy was weakened by Arlong's splash was because he threw the water hard enough to make Luffy flip several times. Everybody would be, with or without Devil Fruit.
Fishmen have a special fighting style called fishmen karate, which didn‘t really get established in the LA, but Arlong's splash can be considered a fishmen karate technique.

The major issue I have with the story is Baratie timeline.
Strawhats fight Kuro at night, get Merry and set sail in the morning.
They meet Garp immediately, and go into the fog.
Garp calls Mihawk who is busy fighting Don Krieg online. And by the dawn Mihawk is on Baratie.
And meanwhile Gin shows up telling that he was starwing for a WEEK, since his crew was annihilated on the GRAND LINE.
Like, WHAT? Aren't you've been beaten today and in the vicinity of Baratie?

They never confirmed Gin is part of Don Krieg's crew, so they might've removed their connection in the live action. Since they changed the story, that connection is no longer important, anyway.

Regarding your criticism towards the show:
1 - In the Manga/Anime, the map is just a small plot point introduced and resolved in the Orange Town arc (not the holy grail of the season)
2 - Lets go step by step:
    A) As a devil fruit user, you must be submerged to a certain point to not move (they can also feel a little "debilitated" if body parts such as arms are submerged but they can still fight and use their powers)
    B) Unlike the Manga/Anime where it is explained crystal clear that Arlong is throwing water so fast that it feels like small knives/needles, the LA version just has him throwing water at Luffy resulting in him feeling weak (breaking the rules in the process)
    3) Garp and Mihawk's "capabilities" are fully explained later on (no spoilers from me but just make sure to pay attention until it happens 😉)
These are sadly the consequences of trying to condense 95 chapters into 8 episodes

If you want to catch up with One Piece I would suggest you the Special Episodes called "Episode of East Blue". Each of those episodes are a lenght of a movie but it summerises the East Blue Saga. Which is the same Saga the Live Action was doing.
So if you finish the "Episode of East Blue" You will roughly at same place as the Live action finished it.

The biggest issue with the devil fruit system is that luffy learns more about his fruit and fruits in general as the story goes on. When he leaves fusia village you just know that he can’t swim you later learn that the water drains his energy. Then later you learn that it’s not a total you get touched by water your screwed it’s the amount of water. Basically if it rained he’s not pass out an die but you get submerged under water you’ll basically lose all your energy and drown. It doesn’t actually negate the devil fruit either. The point about arlong splashing luffy is that that’s actually an ability fishman have and that it’s not quite the same as if someone splashed you at a pool it’s actually got some power behind it. Ultimately in season you have even scratched the surface with devil fruit. When talking about the other characters showing abilities that’s not explained mainly because luffy doesn’t know. The live action actually moved up a few reveals like 400 chapters so there is a lot luffy has no clue about that you’ll learn along the way as he learns more on his journey.

The map contains the direct route of entering the grand line safely. Otherwise you cant freely enter the grand line as it is seperated by a dangerous stretch of water filled with sea beasts.
