The Question We Keep Asking

- Companies seem to be throwing expensive darts at a wall when deciding what to make and not thinking about who is going to buy it, or the size of that group. Whether it's The Marvels and the niche, declining audience that Disney and Marvel seem to be chasing, or Sony trying to make a Spiderman Universe with no Spiderman, and launching the expensive PS5 Pro upgrade that will push their customers into considering PC gaming, or the failure of the Borderlands Movie adaptation, we are seeing failure after failure of products that cost too much and don't know who the audience is.

"Modern audience" and "It's not for you" are codes for "I made my fanfiction"

Remember when you were a kid and you thought the grown ups knew what they were doing? Fun times.
Yes. I even thought the president had to be the smartest person in the world.
I certainly did. I thought adults would be mature and wise. Which is why they were grown ups.
The day I entered the corporate workplace I learned that lesson VERY quickly. 😅
Childhoods end is the point where you realize that the adults are just overgrown children, and they don't know what's going on either.
Fundamentally, our brains are subsets of reality. Therefore they cannot contain all of reality. Therefore we are by definition stupid and uninformed.

My son (34) has started saying, 'I'm an old Star Wars fan' to differentiate himself from people who like the current 'quality' of Star Wars products.
I'm the same, I'm a Star Wars fan, not a Disney Star Wars fan. They are 2 very different things

Even year one was alright.
Everything since has been a humiliation ritual.
@OrchinX Nacho Libre was an awesome movie, even Kung Fu panda was good but I wonder who he pissed off recently?
I ask myself this same question. After all these backlash, flops and low viewer ratings, why do they keep wasting money on making these? Each one is a mediocre story with copy paste tropes of "Girl boss main character", "Racially diverse casts", "Representation". Why can't they just give us what we want? Hollywood can't be this stupid.....right?...Right?
It's bc they think they are fighting for a noble goal of justice and equality and human rights when in reality they're being the very racist, divisive ppl they hate. However they're stuck so deep in their world view that they genuinely think they're doing the right thing and are the underdogs fighting the good fight and they think that giving the fans what they want would be evil and racist so they refuse to do it
The real answer is social engineering
You're not supposed to reject the product, you're supposed to consume the product, and then get excited for more product.

I've been saying for the last three or four years that all these Studios need to bring their budgets down to within realistic expectations of their target audience for these movies. Because there's nothing wrong with making a movie that we all know is only going to make 200 million worldwide. But you got to keep the budget for that movie under 60 million. While they keep pushing the budgets of those movies over 150
It seems like they may have actually followed that strategy with Agatha. Another niche appeal production, but they didn’t spend much on it. This one may not be a huge loss for them.
Meanwhile Godzilla minus one had a budget of 15 million and is regarded as one of the best films of the 2020s.

These companies acquire IPs that are inherently valuable, because they already have massive audiences. Yet they instead try to appeal to general audiences instead of that audience, nonsense. Just pure nonsense
Well yeah, the point is that they're chasing 'infinite growth'. But these IPs, which are at the height of their popularity, have already reached the saturation point of their audience. Everyone who is already interested is already watching. But infinite growth STILL must happen, so the only option is to try and mess with the formula to stretch the target demographics even further.
Make a project, at a reasonable price, that actually knows its target audience and it will be well received. And even people who aren't the target audience may appreciate it because it's good.
I am not a car guy, but I loved Ford v. Ferrari. I am not a girl, but I loved the Barbie Movie. I don't like soccer or feel good sports movie, but I enjoyed Last Goal Wins.

@@stephengray1344 Because this is what studios have always done. People are trying to claim that it's some new nefarious thing with a political agenda but . . . well . . . When mainstream movies started appealing to racial minorities, they started by putting in minor characters that were black or asian. 'Tokenism'. Lots of action movies had a half baked romance subplot, to try and get lady butts in seats. The modern pattern is just a clumsy continuation of that trend to try and make the thing that appeals to all people by way of the lowest common denominator.

Action movies are a young person's game, specifically a young man's game, before the joints start creaking and they face plant one too many times (looking at you, Harrison Ford).
Women like romantic comedies, men like action movies.
If you put a woman in an action movie it has to be a woman who appeals to young men, like Charlize Theron (Atomic Blonde) or Angelina Jolie (Tomb Raider). Not women who're old enough to be their grandmothers.
What works even better are big strong men who young men aspire to be like, like Arnold, or Sly.

The worst part is they are just now STARTING to figure this out. This seems unlikely, se as they have only figured out that things aren't working, but refuse to acknowledge what things aren't working.
To course correct would require a degree of awareness and common senses that seems extremely endangered in Hollyweird, not to mention the basic level humility and respect necessary that is practically heretical to the narcissists in charge right now. Dude. Sony should have just copied sega Saturns strategy with the 32x. Just thrust a giant hunk of plastic and hardware into the PS5 and call it a day. The only thing you’ll need to buy is a new entertainment cabinet.
1. You do realize the console would have to be designed for that in the beginning, right?
2. What would need to be upgraded during this generation would be hundreds of dollars worth of chips, conpared to $15-20 back then. Think about how much it costs just to upgrade your GPU.
3. Even with all the advantages towards this thinking back then, it failed. So it will never work in this generation, or ever, going forward.

Disney already has markets to teenage girls with Olivia Rodrigo and stuff like that.
Yeah, and they bought both Marvel and Star Wars to cater to boys, which makes their attempts to turn them into girl brands baffling.
@@akl2k7 No that makes perfect sense from the c-suites position. Remember, it's not enough to do well. You have to keep GROWING. Marvel and Star Wars Products are a high cost/high return strategy. If they've already completely cornered the boys market, they've already got all the boys who are going to watch, the only way to squeeze more money out of each project is to somehow onboard girls as well.
Now it wasn't like the MCU lacked female fans! Lots of 'boy things' have female fans. Lost of them in fact. Just like lots of 'girl' things have male fans!
But Disney wanted all the girls to be watching the same fervor as all boys at all times. They wanted 'the one franchise to rule them all' and so it stretched things to the breaking point.

That is the dumpster fire that warms my dark heart. It also breaks it when I think about the greatness that could have been.
That one crushed my soul. One of my favorite series turned into a DEI abomination
@@Dee-b5p Well what Hollywood practices is performative DEI. Diversity Equity and Inclusion doesn't just mean race ethnicity or simply sexuality it also mean diverse socio economic background. A good example would be the current (rather you like it or not) presidential ticket featuring a black woman from my home state of California and a white guy from the Midwest. That is a DEI ticket.
The WOT had DEI done right before that was a concept. All Amazon had to do was follow the damn books! What really hurts me is that thanks to the Wheel of Prime people negatively associate the book series with the show thinking that what they see in the show is in the books. I won't see a good WOT in my lifetime :(

11:36 The current rumor circling around has it that section was meant to feature Concord, which was made by a Sony owned studio. Obviously, they would have jettisoned any mention of that if it were true.
I kind of felt this way about Pacific Rim Uprising. The first movie was so expertly crafted, and then the sequel came along and asked, "What if we did that again, but it was immature and cynical instead of clever and sincere?" Not even the usual argument of "just enjoy the flashy monster-on-robot fights" could work as an excuse because they were completely hollow. I was quite happy to see it fail. Heck, it failed so bad that these days, the running joke is that it doesn't even exist.
And it's looking like A Minecraft Movie (not even THE Minecraft Movie, just A Minecraft Movie) is going to be the next big flop, but I guess we'll see.
It’s for Larry Fink and Klaus Schwab
There are at least two other reasons these abominations might exist:
1. Tax write-off (Honestly, I've only heard this mentioned before. No idea how it would work.)
2. Meeting the minimum requirements to hold onto an IP for a set time.
Am honestly tried of asking "who is this for" in all honestly when that pops in my head i just say "naw am do my own thing" and just forget it/make sure i dont waste my money on it

This has quickly become a favourite channel of mine, keep up the great work
So then the question is why are they making these films when it's a foregone conclusion that they will never achieve any sort of meaningful audience?
My English composition course literally said this
the audience is the reader of a text. Audience can be either intended or unintended, and the effectiveness of a text will depend on how well you reach your audience. The relationship between purpose and audience is essential to consider, as each will influence the way a text is written.
...go figure.

For real. It’s the most reductionist, unhelpful slop.
The wokeness is one layer of the rotten onion that is modern Hollywood. It’s definitely there.
Most people are just mid to low intelligence, and need a simple obvious thing to focus on, but they’re not wrong.
WHY did the entire creative team think the abusive female character was charismatic?
Politics.
WHY did they think a character being gay was enough to hitch an entire TV show’s plot to?
Politics.
WHY do they subvert original authors’ values in adaptations?
Politics.
@@OrchinX I don't think it is politics though. I think it's just incompetence. The incompetence is simply more apparent because we have so many mega projects that are also slop writing quality right now.
But like, Barbie did well while being wildly feminist. Get Out, a movie with huge racial politics overtones, did extremely well for a tiny indie film 245 million out of 4.5 million budget. Crazy Rich Asians did well as a Hollywood movie with an all Asian cast that was all about Asian identity. The list goes on.
Good movies can and often do have a clear message. It's not that movies have a political message, or even that it's message that we agree/disagree with . . . it's that the movies just aren't very good.
I'd say the MCU's lack of coherent vision in phase 4, the completely abandonment of proper preproduction, and the saturation of tv projects, was far more damning than any politics.

Ahh, perfect video for after work (experience) to see Uncle Greg.
Hello. Love the videos. Great job.
Thank you so much!
I remember scrolling down tiktok one day (I blame my friend) and saw an advert for borderlands, and the entire thing felt very "and so, that's how I'd describe Tiny Tina, now, remember, you're not allowed to interact with the source material!" ~ The worst part about game adaptions is how virtually every single time there is a need to make it their own, when many of these games have pretty compelling storylines within themselves or even have hints towards an elusive past that would be great to see fleshed out!
Also, as you said, it's weird how companies will butcher source material, most people aren't looking out to see a game adaptation, so that is generally going to scare them off unless you get a "holy damn that was good" from people who already have an investment in the franchise, so I don't understand why there is this constant process of throwing out franchise fans in favour of some audience which has consistently shown they're never going to show up, assuming they even exist
You could say the projects are disingenuous, because they're *budgeted* as if they are written to bring in legacy viewers (even if they don't like/love it), or enough 'new' viewers to offset the legacy losses.
But by now, there is intrenched data showing this is not occurring. Yet, they are not adjusting their writing, their formula/approach, or reducing the budgets to reflect the 'actual' audience size the stories are intended to serve.
If you want to serve smaller niche groups that's not a problem, just be open and genuine about it. Either lower the budget to match the audience, or openly state they are over budgeted because you feel these under served niches deserve a higher quality product, which budget-to-audience-sizes wouldn't normally allow.
Blaming legacy viewers and 'new' viewers for not turning up just doesn't seem to have any form of justifiable logic.
Subscribed just because I went to high school with you. Take note, kids: when you’re nice to people when you’re young, it’ll pay off when you’re old!
Great stuff man! Keep up the amazing work.

Regarding consoles, I think we're at a point with processing power where developers and consumers could use a bit more time with these machines. In the past, it made more sense to stick with the common upgrade schedule, but now the gains aren't nearly as groundbreaking as they once were. Heck, even Raytracing and Global Illumination can be faked pretty well in many circumstances. Couple that with the inflated cost of...well, everything, I'm pretty sure most people would rather wait a bit longer before investing in the "next generation" of console.

I assume that might be because sales tax in the US varies. Here in the great state of New Hampshire, the only products with sales tax are prepared foods.
Lol, Borderlands was never gonna be good with Uwe Boll on the project.
‘Why do you want to be immortal?’
‘So i can never die’
Actual Uwe Boll Dialogue from House of the Dead

there's also the itty bitty problem of, most normal people dont see the improvment as anythin worth forking big bucks for, A top of the line PC is about the cost for a PS5 but you can make something comparable to a PS4/PS4pro for way less.
These people have said out loud on the record, "i already got paid, this is your problem" so the business side is take the money and run like hell. Watch The Producers if you need a reminder
2024 will go down in history as the year of the flops
Except for Inside Out 2 and Deadpool 3.
@@bowserbreaker2515 I don't mean to say everything that came out this year was a flop. but there were just so many high profile ones.
@@MrsMacLover True. It's too bad Wild Robot and Transformers One will probably flop. I loved them, and so did many others. But people have been too burned to check them out.
Awesome episode. I think this is intimately related with your other video. They are doing the content for "themselves", not caring for the audience/players. They forgot that entertainment it's supposed to be made thinking on your target audience. Also extra points for Sony, who doesn't realize that actually people have less money to buy things like consoles. First job salaries are so low that people can't get out of their parents house, much less spend on hobbies like 5 years ago. So with that kidn of salary, what you will buy? A 700 console or a PC? The answer is easy.
"The least watched Marvel show in existence"--up to that point.
Holywood assume that if there is nothing good to watch, we will watch whatever effulent they churn out.
