I avoid combs as much as possible. Now, I rarely use them, so that could be a great change in your regimen! I find that for me, as long as I am keeping my hair moisturized consistently, deep conditioning, keeping the hair clean, and sticking to low manipulation styling, my hair retains length. :)
When I wear two strand twist, I don't usually like to wash, because it causes extreme tangles and knots during take down. I usually moisturize my hair 1-2 times during the week and seal with oil or a leave in. I do a full wash, deep conditioning when I am ready to take the style down. :) I usually just do my conditioning in one step. I don't think there is any harm in doing them separate, but it may be just an extra step and more work for you. :)
Thank you very much! I always add a little oil to the hair during take down. I start unraveling gently from the ends and then go up. This decreases the amount of knots and tangles you can get from wearing your natural hair in two strand twist for a while.:)
I always apply oil to my hair when I am preparing for a take down, then I start from the ends. It is so tempting to start from the top and pull them apart, but that ALWAYS leads to horrible knots you will have to cut out. Make sure you have set aside a good amount of time to do your hair. Rushing also causes damage. :)
Hi! You know I've learned to embrace the shrinkage. I usually stretch or blow out my hair before twisting. This helps to get a little more hang time with my twist. My hair does shrink up a lot after a week. I keep them stretched by wrapping the twist around my head at night. I hope this helps! :)
Thanks! No, I keep my small twist in for at least a month, then i wash my hair. I don't like to go too long without a wash. When I'm wearing loose twist, I redo them sometimes after two weeks, because they don't last as long. The style doesn't take as long to do, so I re twist without blow drying or washing again to get another two weeks out of the style. :) Also, I don't always blow my hair out before twisting. I prefer it, but it just depends on how I am feeling. :)
I think that has a lot to do with the texture of my hair, and I also twist the ends a little bit with my fingers to keep them from unraveling. I just did some twist on my daughters hair for the first time. Her hair is really soft, and usually doesn't hold twist. So, this time I started off with a braid, and then two strands. They have been holding up for about a week now.:)
Hi Alicia. Thanks for another inspiring vid! I am currently wearing my hair in mini twists and have been all year, usually for 4-5 weeks at a time. What I find most helpful in noticing my new growth is by not 'watching' it grow. Whenever I take them out, clean, comb and detangle, and re-twist my hair, I do so without a mirror, but the expanding length says it all. So in a way, I haven't actually 'seen' my hair since January or February. I'll do another length 'check' maybe in September.
Hi! Well..it seems like you are just in the beginning of your journey! I have been natural for four years now, and believe me it took time to get to this point. In the beginning I remember going through so many mental battles. I had to really get comfortable with the new me. As far as hair growth... remember on average people grow 6 inches of hair a year. Most only retain 3-4 inches of that. So, this will help you set the right expectations for your hair growth journey.
You have amazing growth. This is the length of my daughters hair. I keep her hair in twists, undoing and washing every 2-3 days. Then i redo. Keep up the great work.
I'm not sure, it depends on your hair. Do you normally get a lot of shrinkage? If so, things will not change much with the twist. You can wrap the twist around your head or braid them to keep them as stretched as possible. :)
Have to shout out the happiness of watching your beautiful hair!! I'm natural too and I love to see everyone that puts so much care and effort in growing their hair despite the textures have the results they've wanted & luv! : )
Hi! I have fine strands of hair. I wouldn't say it is indestructible, but I have learned to take care of my hair and also be able to have fun with my hair. :)
Wow! Three months is a long stretch! The longest I usually go is 6 weeks. I always fear my hair locking up. You can re-twist the edges if you don't want to take all of the twist down and restart. Three months is a long time to keep them in with your natural hair, so just pay attention to your knots and tangles during that time, keep the hair clean and moisturized. :)
I did the same for 3 months. I also braided the roots and rope twist the ends.. I retained Soo much length..I only took Dem out caz I missed my hair and was tired of them lol
I like how you actually respond to a lot of people's comments unlike a lot of other natural hair vloggers. It's really awesome...and I'm not hinting at you to reply now, I'm just saying, it's definitely appreciated =]
My hair was blown out before doing these twist, so that usually gives me that extra stretch that you see. Stretching the hair heat or no heat, usually helps elongate my twist. Also, to maintain the twist, I wrap them around my head at night! :)
Hi and congrats on your transition! ❤ On average I leave them in for 3-4 weeks. I don't normally wash my hair while wearing the twist, it causes me to have really bad tangles. I do a nice wash and deep conditioning before and after.. :)
This video has inspired me I am really going to focus on protective styles instead of trying to look cute all the time with my hair curled my goal is bra strap length by the end of the year.
Minitwists are also my go-to haistyle. I'm gonna continue to wear them caz they help me retained my length. I should be at your length by next year :) 💜
If you think you're ready, why not give it a try! There's no harm in trying. You do not have to cut your hair immediately. You can do what they call long term transitioning. It's going to take some time getting use to. I suggest checking out Longhairdontcarellc on RUclips. She was a long term transitioner and has great tips. She also just recently released a book with great tips about it! :)
You know you actually inspired me to do twists back late of last year. I liked them at first then I was like ehhh I was embarrassed of my near shoulder length twists. Now I do braid outs on them and I loveee them! Thanks.
My twists currently look like those in your 2010 video. This video is encouraging because I'm not crazy about them at this length BUT even after a couple of months of wearing them (with redos in between) I'm seeing a ridiculous amount of retention. So I think I'll try to stick it out. Thanks for posting this!
Use this first year to get to know your hair. You need to find what your hair responds to, what it likes and what it doesn't like. Once you have a good relationship with your hair, you can start to see the results you desire. Do you have a regimen? Create a simple regimen that works for your lifestyle. How often to clean the hair, condition, style, etc. These things are very important. Hair talk can be confusing....My biggest tip is to keep it fun, because if it is not fun, is it worth it?! ;)
woah Licia, you have crazy growth. It is unbelievable how you retain your length so well. Can u please do some kind of length retention video or somethin? We need some help LOL!
I don't usually do braids, because they make my fingers hurt. I have lots of styles on two strand twist, which can also be done on braids. Search "Two Strand Twist-Natural Hair". Thanks for watching! :) ❤
I absolutely LOVE your hair/Two Strand Twists, which happens to also be my favorite! February 13, 2013 will be my 3 year Natural Anniversary, and throughout my journey I've found that the twists really help my hair to grow. Check out some of my vlogs on my journey.
Hi! I honestly don't think my hair is growing any faster than the average person. I'm able to retain length through protective styling, moisturizing, and my deep conditioning/hot oil treatment routine. Hope this helps! :)
Well your hair is beautiful , i screwed up my hair, & braiding makes me look younger. I'm going to stop the heat and bring back my natural hair. You've inspired me (:
beautiful, I think I will do some loose twist like you did my goal is waist length and I'm about 2 to 3 inches away, I need something that won't stress my have yet will keep it untangled
No problem very inspirational, I keep my hair weaved I am not at that stage to leave it out and if I do I wouldn't know what to do with it....So why it's weaved what is the best routine to keep it healthy and growing :-)
Hi! I just added some great information to my site that may help you! Go to Easy Natural Hair dot com and search "Why Is My Hair Not Growing?" I'm basically throwing out a few tips on what I do to examine and break down my regimen! This helps you to find some things that may/may not be affecting the health of your hair. I hope some of the info helps you! Thanks for watching! :)
Wow!! Alicia! I love it! Look how much it's grown and it looks gorgeous! So I'm planning on doing another video like the Natural Hair is Awesome project, would love to have you be a part of it again! ~Shae of Afroniquely You blog
I love seeing stories like these, and especially with twists because I LOVE Them. Now I have a question about your detangling sessions. I know you are a 4a which leads to hair that can become very tangely when trying to detangle. How do you get through your sessions without breakage. I''m already on fingers only, and I make sure it's not sopping wet because it's weaker when soaking wet.
Your hair is simply GORGEOUS!! Do you find that you have to redo the twists along the hairline every few days to keep them looking neat? if, not how do you get it to stay? You say you blow dry your hair before you twist every 2-3 wks but you blow dry once every 1-2 months? Um, sorry I don't follow
Hi Alicia, My name is Sylvia and Im between a rock and a hard place when it comes to my hair at this point. I really wanna go natural but i dont know what my first step should be, my hair for the last 20yrs of my life has been chemically treated with perms and so my own hair is lust past my shoulders and i really DO NOT wanna cut it but i know at some point i may have to. My hair is currently in braided extensions and im taking them down today and its either perm it or try this natural thing.
if i leave my hair in twists for more than a week it gets matted :( so i do them over weekly but it still helps since that means im only in my hair once a week
I avoid combs as much as possible. Now, I rarely use them, so that could be a great change in your regimen! I find that for me, as long as I am keeping my hair moisturized consistently, deep conditioning, keeping the hair clean, and sticking to low manipulation styling, my hair retains length. :)
its 2017 and I plan on keeping mini twist for two years retwisting every 4 to five weeks hope to have waist length hair by 2019
Nikki Evans keep us updates
How is that going now?
Nikki Evans and?
Report back...?
Nikki Evans So did you get waist length twist?!?
finally someone that shows their growth!!

Yes, I always stretch before doing my two strands! The results are always better with stretched hair for me. :)
I always apply oil to my hair when I am preparing for a take down, then I start from the ends. It is so tempting to start from the top and pull them apart, but that ALWAYS leads to horrible knots you will have to cut out. Make sure you have set aside a good amount of time to do your hair. Anytime the ends are protected it is a protective hairstyle. Two strand twist is what I consider to be low manipulation when worn down. :)
Hi! My normal routine during this time was about 3-4 weeks. :)
Ultimate twist goals!! Remember watching this years ago💜
Hi! You know I've learned to embrace the shrinkage. I usually stretch or blow out my hair before twisting. This helps to get a little more hang time with my twist. My hair does shrink up a lot after a week. I keep them stretched by wrapping the twist around my head at night. I hope this helps! :)
Yes, I would use a thick pomade, cream, or gel to hold the ends of the twist together. You can even try rolling the ends. Good luck! :)
Thanks! No, I keep my small twist in for at least a month, then i wash my hair. I don't like to go too long without a wash. I've never had an issue with unraveling twist. I twist tightly, and then I add a leave in, or water to the ends and twirl. :)

Brown skin...coily hair...plump lips...and a thick derriere :). Love it.
I wrap my twist to keep them stretched. I have lots of shrinkage! :)

I put it in a high ponytail, like the pineapple. Sometimes I leave it wrapped. :)

extra virgin olive oil, Cantu Shea Butter Leave In, Herbal Essence Shampoo, Herbal Essence Conditioner :)
