    YES! I am glad I checked before testing it myself. Thank you for saving me a half a day worth of work, I am guessing that is how long just the testing took anyway.
    I did notice that I was making less from cutting trees into two pieces, vs 4 that I did previously (due to trailer limitations).
    Thinking that it saves me time, making me more efficient, I bought a longer trailer and cut trees into half, PLUS it said: "The longer the pieces, the better the price"
    I found that I made a few grand less per load of 6 trees and got curious, knowing the price hasn't changed.
    Watching your video makes perfect sense to me now. I happen to sell the trees at the right ratio (4pcs) and then made it worse, by being lazy, less cutting and less handling, resulting in less $$$.
    I am looking forward to when I can afford the harvester and retire the chainsaw :)

    I did a (less than science) test of this way back when - my results were 6-10m were optimum (didn't go over 10m), but did notice a drop off in value for lengths shorter than 6m. I find that optimum length is generally how long you can fit on your truck/trailer. So say you use the ITRunner logging frame, you're going to optimize for 6-7m, just so you have a safe load, and optionally could add a trailer and not foul it (FS17 I used the AR frame system, which has similar properties). If your roads allow for convenient use of a semi trailer, then you might want to fit 2 stacks (front/back) to get the best return.

    • @FarmerCop
      @FarmerCop  4 года назад +2

      Neil that is a good point, you have to do logs you can move and it may not always be the most "profitable" way to go but may end up netting you more as you have the right equipment and such

    YAY! You did a video on my test suggestion! Thanks you so much! There's hardly any videos on this topic, so this helps a bunch!
    Funnily enough, after I suggested doing a test on this, I tried my own test as well. Even though it was on a modded map (Holmakra), I'm happy to say the results were similar to what you had.
    My data showed that using 8-10 meter logs were the highest gross total per tree cut into those lengths. Funnily enough, my findings found that 2m logs gave out the most woodchips (with 1m logs in second by just a 200 liters). Even funnier is the fact that a whole tree (branches and all) gave out almost 1k liters LESS than if it were cut into 1m logs (which wouldn't be the case in real life lol).
    Once again, thanks for doing the test as well! I wish they're were more attention to the forestry aspect of FS19. It's one thing being able to plow a field that was already opened up, but to build a farm (literally) from scratch in a forest gives you a sense of pride for it.

    • @volksdude1970
      @volksdude1970 4 года назад

      Also, something else I found out is that the girth of the log factors into the sell price as well. Thicker logs tend to go for higher prices while thinner fetch less.

      @volksdude1970 4 года назад

      @@arneanka4633 I didn't go that far into detail as far as testing chip amounts per piece. I just figured if you were making woodchips, you would be trying to grind the entire tree instead of only partially doing the top half. I may try and do a second test and see how that does.

      Ok, so I found out I still had the save game I did the test in still at the point where I started the test. The tree I was using was around 36-ish meters. The tree was able to get cut into 4 logs with a "topper" (remaining part of the tree). I just did a quick and dirty test with chipping the topper and the thinnest part of the 8 meter cut. The "topper" only gave me a whopping 33 liters of woodchips, while chipping the last 8 meter log pushed it just over 1k liters.
      My test findings before showed that a whole tree chipped after cutting into 8 meter logs yielded 14,969 liters total (topper included).
      I guess it's up to preference. Sometimes toppers are worth more just sold instead of chipped.

    Wow that’s a lot of good info and work. So with what u gave us we should log at 6 meters for most money per meter? So If u break your sell down in to overall equal lengths. So do 6 meters with 8 pieces of a total of 48 meters. Then do 8 meters and 6 pieces for a total of 48 meters the pay out is different by a few thousand. Then 4 meters and 6 pieces get 24 meters the do 6 meters and 4 pieces for 24 meters. This is all based of your first sell pricing. So if I understand it right 6 meters is the most profitable?

    The Woodchip Trailer mod is almost game breaking in how much money it brings in for the comparatively little work you do. A full trailer will bring in between $90-100,000. The woodchip sell points give you like $500-900 per. 1000. Mix that with a logging machine and it’s a license to print money

    I've fiddled the base game price of woodchips to >50% higher. It makes it so that if you are starting out you are going to get more from woodchipping than cutting logs small enough to load by hand. Sure it increases the profit of poplars A LOT, but poplars take 3x longer to grow (insane) so even if it were doubled, it would likely be only mediocre on per-day-acre rates, a lot less than sugarcane, but with the lack of maintenance that sugarcane profits from. The problem is otherwise you are basically throwing wood away to woodchip, unless you do poplars, but poplars require a specific header and a forage harvester, and the header is a 2m one, really bad size that. Especially since the AI seems to put a minimum overlap when it lines up for the next row, and losing 1/3m out of 1.2m is a big chunk of change compared to a small 4m harvester header. Woodchips are among the first IMO that GIANTS should have increased process chains in a future game or expansion (see straw harvest).
    Another option would be to double the volume of woodchips you get and ~50% to the price so that you could get about the same price woodchipping as selling straight logs, but that you can carry 6 trees on an articulated trailer bed but you'd fill up the biggest trailer available with two trees, making the Jenz static a useful option (removes the shipping) despite the price cut, and late game, a balance between fiddling around with tree loading or carting A LOT of woodchips. You earn more per hour with logs than woodchipping.
    For the woodchipper, your problem was you needed to run the tree toward the chipper, so the log was co-axial with the belt. There are mods for different woodchippers, it falls in easy.
    The cheaper in-game cutter is a lot cheaper and cuts to 6m, and gets you within whistling distance of max price, and the loaders for it are more widespread. No-brainer for me.
    The Jenz static is still absolutely terrible, however. It should be free to place but with a c100/day upkeep to simulate you renting it. Another fiddle I did with the base game files. It costs A LOT, automatically loses 50% of its price, has a daily upkeep, and only pays out 80% of the price of woodchips AT AVERAGE PRICE. Terrible item. Unless added as a free item to a mod map.

    Since I lack money, I bought a simple claw for the tractor and cut one of the trees at my field, cleaned it with chainsaw and brought to the sawmill. It was the best I could find, a straight long fir. Only $2000. That was one kick in the nuts. Maybe I should have cut it to 2-3 pieces...
    So do I get it right? A full tree went for $1754 but cut to 10s it was $7461? Such a difference just for cutting? "First sell" means price of one log? So 12 m is the best at $3804? What does the "wood chip" column mean? Why 16700 for 1 and 15900 for 14? Do you get less chips for larger pieces shredded?

    The time required to woodchip isn't worth it. You can cycle 2 log loads for every chip load. it's not even close. I can make 100k while you try to chip your 2 or 3 trees. it's a game of volume, and I don't have to wait for chips with logs, I just go to the sale point, sell all logs, go and load up. repeat. 4-600k a day or 3 hr.

    way to much work for the money. just log full 4 piece pine logs and get 45k a load. buy and plant right next to the saw mill, and pay off your loans in 3 days, or 2 long days. It's a no brainer. all you need after planting, all you need is a way to cut to length, and load/transport. 2 machines can harvest a 1800 tree planting job. It's not even close. Just cycle logs, and wood chip the stumps. you shouldn't need to replant for a month. just sell all the planting equipment after you plant. then re-buy when you clear your planted trees and stumps.

    good test, i usually go (on foresty maps) with the 12m fliegl autoload and cut into 2 sections, length depend on tree growth of course but i find they yield more @6m vice 12m the fact that 10m came out at the top sale price is interesting. i may h ave to switch to that and try my equipment on it at that length.

    • @FarmerCop
      @FarmerCop  4 года назад +1

      Yea I thought it was odd the 10m beat out everyone else. But a lot of it does come down to whether or not you have the equipment for it and what not

    Great test!! On which difficulty was this test done? Maybe it would have been a good idea to also state the money that the wood chips would have fetched you per tree! I suppose that could be calculated and would all be around 3300 per tree if you consider about €200/1000l of wood chips and 16,5k l per tree or use your numbers to be more specific

      Prices for crops fluctuate wildly during a single game (including woodchips), so it wouldn't really benefit just listing the sell price.
      Listing the yield of woodchips from a tree/log, though would help you decide if it would benefit from selling logs or chips if the price of chips spike.

    • @FarmerCop
      @FarmerCop  4 года назад +2

      I did consider leaving the price for what you would get from woodchips but like Retroace said it is so variable I figured it would not matter a lot

    I always go with 12 m lenght, with the Johnston trailer. Seems like that is the best for me atleast.
    Maybe I should cut down too 10 m?? Anyhow, love your test videos, then I dont bother too do them my self. :D
    If you do 1m instead of 12m, you should get more woodchips, allot more cuts, therefore more chips. Dont know if the gamephysics are in too that. :)
    Thanks for the test :)
