  • In 1989, Singapore Airlines began services on our revolutionary B747-400, operating it on non-stop flights between London and Singapore.
Enjoy this nostalgic video introducing the Megatop B747, taking our passengers further and faster across the world.
    The B747 Story:
In 1994, Singapore Airlines became the world’s biggest Megatop B747-400 operator when it took delivery of its 23rd B747 and by 2003, it operated a record 51 Boeing Megatop 747-400s.

The 747s have been one of the greatest aircraft in the fleet of Singapore Airlines prior to the arrival of the newer Airbus aircraft (notably the A350-900 and the A380).

Prior to the fall of Iron Curtain in late 1980s/early 1990s, many of Singapore Airlines flights crossed over the skies of India-Middle East-Southern Europe over Mediterranean due to off limits within Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries.

I Think the first scheduled service on the Megatop 744 was the SQ19 from Heathrow to Singapore via Bombay in early 1990.
The airline then introduced additional flights from London to Singapore nonstop and some via Europe (mainly Paris and Zurich)
as more of the aircraft were delivered.

Did they fly to New York via Amsterdam in the early 90s (service ended when SQ21 nonstop Newark - Singapore began in 2004)?

@@visionist7 Yes,SQ started New York JFK via Amsterdam in October 1993 (previously via Brussels) as SQ25 a daily service some days via Amsterdam others via Frankfurt, then in Spring 1998 SQ25 was routed via Frankfurt daily when they introduced a new 3 x times a week service to New York Newark via Amsterdam, also with a 744,they were I think planning for a second daily service to JFK but routed via London Heathrow (OR Paris maybe) a few months before 9/11 happened but things never materialised.

How time flies. Many years on, the Boeing 747 has been retired, the Airbus A380 is into its last years of service and the Airbus A350 is now the workhorse of Singapore Airlines.

@@pandumiharja6769 there're 2 planes painted with Tropical livery, 9V-SPK & 9V-SPL (both are 747-400). Bevause 9V-SPK crashes as Flight 006, its sister plane, 9V-SPL temporarily pulled out of service to repainted into its original livery.

The SQ ads of yesteryear, especially in the 1980s and early 1990s were highly evocative. Can't say the same of their ads of today. Completely uninspiring.

I’ll never fly Singapore Airlines again!!!!! They have no customer service. I flew them last September Seattle to Bangkok. The Bangkok to Singapore portion of the return trip was changed enough to cause me to miss the Chiangmai to Bangkok
Portion of the flight. I found that out on my own. sA never informed me. In the meantime, my brother died and I had to get home a week early. Singapore airlines said I had to contact the third party travel agency to change the ticket. After 4 days of emailing them, the agency, BudgetAir told me Singapore Airlines wanted $1,650 to change my ticket. I’m sure that BudgetAir never mentioned to SA that I was due a free change because of SA canceling a portion of my return ticket and changing it on their own. They also didn’t tell SA that I was changing my flight because my brother had died. Because I had no more time to waste before going back, I found and bought a ticket on Qatar Airlines for $620.00. It has been 7 months since I got home and I have been in email communication weekly with Singapore Airlines and BudgetAir to get a refund. They keep changing what’s required for a refund. They first told me that I needed the death certificate and obituary. They changed that to add mine and my brother’s birth certificate, listing a common mother and father. Then, they said copies weren’t enough. They wanted them formatted a certain way. All of this done to get me to give up. I DON’T AND WON’T GIVE UP!!! I am in the process of filing complaints with every government agency in the U.S. and Singapore and am suing for $620.00, the amount of the ticket that I was forced to buy. Singapore Airlines is making record profits and giving large bonuses to their flight crews. It would be nice if some of these profits would go to upgrade their customer service department
