So clear and helpful! Thank you so much. I am going to Japan for my first time in September and this video has eased my anxieties about taking the Shinkansen hugely :)
Thanks so much for the information. I asked Klook about luggage space booking for Japan but you have explained it so well. Not long before my trip to Japan your travel tips super helpful as always

Well, thank you Klook! I've booked and paid my tickets and after 30 seconds my booking was cancelled and in the refound was minus the commission! No number to call, and if you write an e-mail they warn you that it might take time to get a reply and suggest to use the chat... of course, the chat doesn't work. Never ever again.
Hi. Sorry you had that experience. When this happens, Klook should refund the 10% fulfillment fee in a separate transaction. Please keep a look out for that separate refund. It's because 10% is all that Klook earns off the transaction, so it goes into a separate account when you pay. Here's their refund policy: www.klook.com/en-US/ptp-policy/jprail/refundPolicy/ 🌸 Heidi
Thank you for these videos again! If I don't have any oversized luggage, would I be better off with the Mt Fuji view seats? My wife and I will be traveling with 2 kids - 8 and 10 year olds. Great video. I love Klook and glad I can change seats on the Shinkansen. Should I purchase all the tickets for my family on my phone? Or will everyone need to purchase their own separately ?
Ty for the video! I’ll be taking Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto with large luggage. Are seats usually full when purchasing on the spot at Tokyo station?
Hi. We usually purchase at least one day in advance, to get the specific time we want. If it's a busy time of year, then we recommend booking up to one month in advance. Klook now allows you to select a seat with Oversized Luggage Area.
Regional passes can be worth it if you travel throughout the covered region. The validity period (5 days, 6 days, 7 days) depends upon which pass you select. Is there a specific regional pass you are considering?
Hi, thank you so much for the video. I’m going to Japan in April next year and need to get from Osaka to Hiroshima. How would I go about getting the Shinkansen tickets booked in advanced for this trip? When you mentioned that the tickets can be sent to my hotel. How exactly does this work? I will only be staying in my Osaka hotel for two nights.
Hi, as long as you book in advance you will be required to provide your hotel address. You will be able to let them know when you will be there so most likely the tickets will be waiting for you once you arrive at. your hotel. If you are unsure about this process you can try the Smart EX website: ruclips.net/video/KglsSHuex0Q/видео.html
Hi, great full of information content, thank you for sharing 😊🙏 i have a question of the seat reservation, once we received the physical shinkansen ticket, how early can we change the seat reservation pls ? Does it have to be on the travel day or can be 30 days early (when purchasing with Klook) many thanks
Thanks for all of your videos! When booking on Klook, does the Klook system try and seat all family members together (we are traveling with kids)? Thanks!
Hi, yes they do. In fact, they have added a new feature during checkout where you can choose your preferred seats such as window or aisle. And rememeber, you can always change your seats if you aren't happy with them.
Hi, the main reason is that most Hikari Shinkansen will terminate at Shin-Osaka. Meaning they go no further. Therefore there is less availability to go all the way on the Hikari to Hiroshima. May I ask why you prefer the HIkari over the Nozomi? The reason I ask is because the price is the same for either train when purchasing individual tickets.
If I have klook roundtrip bullet train tickets to Osaka, once I get to Shin-Osaka station can I use my suica Grean and White card, to get to universal Studios city walk ?
This is very helpful, thank you for the info. I was so confused as to how Klook reserved seats but I couldnt find any answers as to how it works. Side question, If I am reserving seats for 2 people, in this case do I get 2 QR codes? Or 1 QR code and then 4 tickets? Thanks again.
Everyone keeps going on about klook but I didn't realise that you can't reserve tickets until you are there. I got the Hokuriku Arch Pass that I need to use the next morning and I don't know if I'm able to get seats for my family -- (Late January). The whole Japan thing is becoming overwhelming 😭
Hi, we understand your situation as something very similar happened to us. If you want to make your reservations ahead of time you can on the JR East reservation website at: www.eki-net.com/ NOTE: you can only make a reservation one month before your journey! At no point will it ask you to pay anything. If it does, you made a mistake and should start over. 1) create an account 2) After you login, choose 'Seat Reservation' 3) Then under 'Pass Purchased Elsewhere' choose Hokuriku Arch Pass Then select your starting and ending destinations and continue the reservation process. At the end it will ask you to confirm and send you a reservation number to your email. Make sure you bring this with you to the office when you pick up your passes. Otherwise, there is no way they will know that you have already made a reservation. I believe this video shows the process of how to reserve: ruclips.net/video/L6XSbdRsfN8/видео.html OR if you prefer from the office. If you can, on the day you arrive visit the JR ticket office at the airport to get your Hokuriku Arch Pass. Even if you can't make it to the office until the day of your journey I think you will be okay. Just get there early to avoid long lines. Also, if going on the day of your journey I recommend going to Ueno Station, it is less overwhelming than Tokyo Station. While they are issuing you the passes ask them to make your reservations for you. This shouldn't be too much of a problem since late January is not a busy time. The worst case scenario will be that you will have to wait for the next train if the one you want is full. Good luck!
good video. generally speaking, how long does it take to go from ticketing machine to train platform, especially in larger stations? i am afraid of buying tickets 30 minutes before departure, but getting lost. or am i overthinking and its very self-explanatory?
Hi, if you are at a small station then no problem. But as you have already stated if you will be purchasing from somewhere like Tokyo or Ueno station then I don't recommend it. The lines might be long at the ticketing machine and if you aren't familiar with the station it could take a while to get to your platform. But if you will be traveling non-reserved then if you miss your train you could hop on the next available one.
You have previously done a great video on Hokurika Arch pass and so many places to visit in there. Thinking of doing this in November, but do you think we can cover all this areas in 7 days? Or should we get individual tickets so thst we have no time restrictions. Travelling to Japan for 18 days for the first time so please can you suggest how many days are good enough in Takayama, Kanazawa, Nagano, Mutsumoto etc. Highly appreciate and we'll buy tickets from your link. We watch most of your videos and almost all are great!! Thanks
Hi, it is possible to visit all those places in 7-days, but it really depends on what you want to see and do. also, take into consideration the time of year as you will be traveling in the fall, it will be getting colder and there is a chance of snow. For us, for instance, we could easily spend 3-4 full days in Matsumoto alone and a 5 days in Kanazawa.
@@KenshoQuest Thanks Ken, we're planing to go in November to see fall colours but if it's sometimes snowing means, our timing is wrong. Is it best to travel from last week of Oct? Thanks and we"ll buy our tickets from your link.
Hi thanks for the video. I want to ask something : Is there a green ticket machine at every station? I plan to travelling to Takaragawa Onsen via Jomo-Kogen station. I just worry, because when I buy ticket online theres any notes : Tickets cannot be received at Jomo-Kogen Station
Hi, great question. There is not the green ticket machine at every station. Please pick up your ticket at larger stations like Tokyo, Ueno or Shibuya Station, or even at the airport. Sorry, I do not know if Jomo-Kogen Station has the ticketing machine
The only way that you can reserve/change assignment of the seat online is buying it through their official website, correct? And that can be purchased up to a month ahead of your travel date I think?
Hi, it depends on where you are going as there are multiple websites. For instance if you are heading south from Tokyo along the Tokaido-Sanyo-Kyushu line which goes all the way to Fukuoka then you can use Smart Ex website/app to reserve and change assignment. If you are heading north from Tokyo in northern Honshu then you can use the ekinet website by JR East. Or if you purchase the whole JR Pass then use that official website. Yes, can be purchased up to one month in advance.
We need to ride the Kagayaki to Nagano, we want to purchase Green car tickets using your link, is 180cm luggage an issue on this train? When selecting a seat on Klook, I see an option for Window Seat but nothing for oversized luggage. You showed doing this at the station but I don't want to risk not being able to take our luggage. Can we do this on Klook?
Hi, the Kagayaki ( actually any shinkansen on the Hokuriku Shinkansen Line ) does not have dedicated luggage seats and does not require a dedicated reservation. Instead, you can place your baggage in the racks which are located at the back of train cars. Since you plan to travel Green car, you can also try to update your seat reservation to the last rows of the train car, which are meant for users with large luggage. The easiest way will be from the JR ticket office. 180cm is fine.
Thank you for the great info, as always! BTW, Would you be able to share where can we purchase Osaka Universal Studio VIP Pass? Klook says, "Currently unavailable 😢
Thank you for the information. However, have one doubt. If I buy a Shinkansen ticket for a specific travel date and time then do i need to board only that specific shinkansen Or can i board any shinkansen on that particular date once?
If you purchase a Reserved seat ticket, then yes, you need to board that specific train at the specific time. Unless you change your reservation before the departure time. However, if you purchase an Non-reserved Shinkansen ticket, you can ride the specific Shinkansen between the designated starting and ending stations at any time that day.
Was trying to purchase thru klook from tokyo to kyoto is it only one way no round trip cant find how to buy if theres a round trip ticket using my iphone need help pls
Hi, if you received a QR Code then you can immediately. Also, if you do have a QR Code, you no longer need to pick up your seat reservation, unless you plan to change it. You can go straight to the shinkansen gate that accepts a QR Code, scan your QR code at the gate then pick up your reservation at the other end of the gate.
Thank you very much for the videos, I only have one question, I already investigated and it is better for me to buy the tickets per trip than to buy the JR PASS, my question is: When I arrive in Japan, can I buy the JR tickets for all the trips I plan to take? For example, arriving in Tokyo on September 20 and that day buying a ticket for the 25th from Kyoto to Tokyo and choosing the time and places, this so as not to waste time on each trip training and buying all at once. Thank you very much and I would greatly appreciate your help.
I just booked 2 tickets using Klook for a trip next month. I chose the Nozomi Train for Tokyo - Kyoto route and already got a seat with a view of mt. Fuji (C and E). My questions are. The dimensions of my suitcase are exactly 160 cm, but can I reserve a baggage compartment so it doesn't disturb other passengers? Can I make a baggage compartment reservation 4 days before departure when I arrive in Tokyo or does it have to be on the day of departure? because I will be leaving for Kyoto very early morning, so I want to arrange my trip 4 days in advance when I arrive in Tokyo.
Yes, you can reserve a baggage compartment even if your suitcase is not technically oversized. Yes, you can use a Ticketing Machine to change your reservation 4 days before departure. Please note that there are certain seats assigned to the oversized luggage areas/compartments. So changing your reservation will change your seat number. 🌸 Heidi
Lets say you bought 4 tickets 30 days in advance, departure time at 10am, but for some reason you were late and arrive at 12pm, can you still ride on the next train? Do they allow to do that? Do they allow you to change the reservation?
Hi, yes, if you purchased reserved seats and you did not change your seat reservation before your train time then you can still ride on the next train but in non-reserved only and there is no guarantee you will have a seat. You will not be allowed to change your seat reservation once your departure time has passed. If you purchased a non-reserved seat, then no problem, as you can ride non-reserved in the next train.
Sorry, it's not possible to choose oversized luggage seats on Klook. Once you have printed your tickets you can use the ticket machine to change to a seat reservation that includes oversized luggage.
We bought two Shinkansen tickets through Klook, at least we thought we did, but when we woke up the next day we were greeted with an email notifying us that our order had been cancelled. No reason why.
Hi .. if we bought ticket shinkansen in Klook and got the barcode, when it will be expired? If I buy ticket for 19 november in 18 october is it okay? And when we exchange the barcode with physical ticket in the machine.. is it still in long queue (long line)? Thank you so much for the answers, we need this :)
Hi, through Klook you can purchase up to 90 days in advance. So currently you are out of that range, but yes, you can buy in October. But if you purchase more than 30 days in advance, you will not be issued your QR code until you are within 30-days of your travel date. Once you get your QR code, it will not expire unless you don't use it by your travel date on the shinkansen.
Hello! Thanks for the video. Do you mind, i still have some questions i would like to ask: I will be traveling in a group of 7 (with kids and baby) with some oversized baggage, planning to take Shinkansen train from Tokyo to Nagoya then Nagoya to Osaka. Thinking to book online since we're a large group. But some advice since reserved seats with oversize baggage can only be purchased offsite in Japan , we need to directly just purchase offsite in Japan. Would you advice the same? Or book online then change the seat reservation ? Can seat resevation be done days prior departure? And can it be done for a large group? However, you said there's no guarantee so what if we couldn't get seats with oversized baggage on the specific time of our departure?
Hi. Since you want to book seats with oversized baggage allotment, you may want to book online on SmartEX, instead. Here's our video showing how to do that: ruclips.net/video/KglsSHuex0Q/видео.html Children ages 6-11 years old qualify for kids prices. Children 5 and younger can ride for free, unless you want them to have their own reserved seat, in which case you should purchase a seat for them.
@@KenshoQuest hi, thanks for the explanation. I was just trying to book online on SmartEX but encountered some problems. I booked it but then It said "can't process the credit card" but the payment went through and debited on my card but no reservation confirmation whatsoever from SmartEX. Tried to call my bank they said the payment did go through and was successfully completed. Tried to call CS on the EX web but couldn't reach out. Please help any advice? I'm not yet in Japan tho 😟
@@IsabellaDyanung I'm so sorry that happened. I hope you are able to reach SmartEX at TEL: +81-(0)3-6632-5130. Did you explain to your bank and ask if they could reverse the charge? Again, so sorry you encountered this issue.
Can I change my qr code to physical ticket in any jr ticket machine? For example if I would like to go to tokyo from kyoto on Monday but I want to change my qr code to physical ticket 3 days before in Shin Osaka station, can I do that? Thank you :)
Hi, yes, as soon as you have your QR code it is valid and active and you can exchange it at any of the JR ticketing machines within the region. In your case, it will work fine at Shin-Osaka.
I'm arriving at NRT airport and I tried booking on Klook to go to Yodoyabashi station but it doesn't pop up? is there another train I would have to take to go there or would I have to go to Shin- Osaka station?
Hi, the Shinkansen only stops at a few designated stations. In Osaka, the only station is Shin-Osaka. So you will need to go to Shin-Osaka via the shinkansen then transfer to a local train to get to Yodobashi Station.
Hi, if you are looking for an eSIM then I can recommend Airalo global eSIM: airalo.pxf.io/75Pde3 coupon: MAY15 for 15% off first time users But if you need an actual physical SIM then you will need to get two separate SIMs, one for each Japan and Korea. For a physical SIM in Japan: Japan Wireless ( Best for casual users ): www.japan-wireless.com/?via=kenshoquest GET 10% OFF WITH COUPON: JWKENSHO I do not have a good recommendation for Korea.
As long as you are within your 30 days of using the tickets you can pick them up. In fact, if you receive QR code then you can do it now. But Klook just made it easier if you have a QR Code, you no longer need to visit the ticket machine unless you want to change your reservation. You can now just go straight to the shinkansen ticket gate, choose the one that accepts a QR code and at the other end of the gate it will issue you our seat reservation.
@@jackfromthe60s Each ticket will be issued its own QR code. If you have multiple QR codes on one phone, for instance you have a child who does not have a phone, you can scan the first QR code and let the child walk through the ticket gate, then scan the next QR code. If everyone has their own phone, you can email each person their QR code.
I’m going to be doing the kanazawa to osaka next fall, but I’m not understanding how to make this reservation, because is part shinkansen, and the other with the thunderbird express, any idea of how to do it?
Hi. I'm not currently seeing that route offered on Klook. They might not have updated their offerings since the Hokuriku Shinkansen was extended. You could purchase two tickets from JR West www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/overview/. A ticket for Shin-Osaka Station to Tsuruga Station on the Thunderbird Limited Express. And then a ticket from Tsuruga Station to Kanazawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen (Hakutaka or Tsurugi). 🌸 Heidi
Should I buy my Shinkansen Train tickets weeks/days ahead or is it safe to buy the day of travel at the Train Station? Thank you for sharing your knowledge about Japan on your channel and help with my question. Your my Go2 Japan Channel
Hi. It depends upon whether it is a busy time of year. If you are traveling during Golden Week in the spring, Obon in August, or New Years, we recommend booking in advance. However, if it's not a busy time of year, you could buy tickets at the train station the day before. We don't recommend buying them the day of travel, as sometimes the train time you want is already sold out and you may need to wait for a later train. 🌸 Heidi
Sorry for the confusion. Since he is 6-years-old, he will need a ticket purchased for him. Children younger than 6-years-old can ride for free and sit on someone's lap in reserved cars.
Yes. You can buy a separate ticket for the return trip. Sometimes if you are purchasing directly from a Ticket Machine at a train station, there is an option for round trip.

Also, is it easy to do day trips from Kanazawa to Takayama and Shirakawago if we base our accommodation in Kanazawa?
Hi thanks for the video. I want to ask something : Is there a green ticket machine at every station? I plan to travelling to Takaragawa Onsen via Jomo-Kogen station. I just worry, because when I buy ticket online theres any notes : Tickets cannot be received at Jomo-Kogen Station
Hi, great question. There is not the green ticket machine at every station. Please pick up your ticket at larger stations like Tokyo, Ueno or Shibuya Station, or even at the airport. Sorry, I do not know if Jomo-Kogen Station has the ticketing machine
@@KenshoQuest oh okay, so it should be fine if I pick up at Kansai Airport ?
I will start from Kansai - Osaka - Kyoto - Kanazawa - JomoKogen - Tokyo
@@KenshoQuest Thank you so much for this and all your travel videos.
Do you place the paper tickets into the ticket machine gate together or one at a time to enter?
I usually stack the tickets and insert them into the automatic ticket gate at the same time. 🌸 Heidi
@KenshoQuest Thanks Heidi!
Thank you for the great info, as always! BTW, Would you be able to share where can we purchase Osaka Universal Studio VIP Pass? Klook says, "Currently unavailable 😢
You could try the USJ ticketing website: www.usjticketing.com/options
Hi. You would purchase two separate tickets. One from Tokyo to Kyoto and one from Kyoto to Tokyo.
@ thank u very much ❤️
When can I collect my reserved Shinkansen tickets with Klook ?
Hi, yes, you can purchase all at once at JR ticket vending machines at any major station or even at the airport.
CAN WE RERVE AHEAD A icoca card with the fijian/raijin design at KIX AIRRPORT?
Hi, unfortunately not, since this is a limited time item and can only be purchased at the JR ticket office, Kansai Airport Station
🌸 Heidi
Thanks Heidi. So helpful ❤
Can I choose oversized luggage reserved seats on the Klook app? Or will I have to do so at the ticket printing machine
Sorry, it's not possible to choose oversized luggage seats on Klook. Once you have printed your tickets you can use the ticket machine to change to a seat reservation that includes oversized luggage.
@@KenshoQuest thank you! Can i print it at the station a day before i need to travel?
@@Ipman69 Yes. Once you are within 30 days of your train trip you can print your tickets.
We bought two Shinkansen tickets through Klook, at least we thought we did, but when we woke up the next day we were greeted with an email notifying us that our order had been cancelled. No reason why.
Sorry that happened. Most likely, by the time Klook tried to process your order there were no more seats available on the train.
Hi .. if we bought ticket shinkansen in Klook and got the barcode, when it will be expired?
I really wish I saw your video before going to Japan 😢
Can I change my qr code to physical ticket in any jr ticket machine? For example if I would like to go to tokyo from kyoto on Monday but I want to change my qr code to physical ticket 3 days before in Shin Osaka station, can I do that? Thank you :)
Hi, yes, as soon as you have your QR code it is valid and active and you can exchange it at any of the JR ticketing machines within the region. In your case, it will work fine at Shin-Osaka.
Curious. You can’t use Klook to go from Osaka to Hiroshima?
You can, just be sure to enter Shin-Osaka as your starting station.
@@KenshoQuest TY 🖖
I'm arriving at NRT airport and I tried booking on Klook to go to Yodoyabashi station but it doesn't pop up? is there another train I would have to take to go there or would I have to go to Shin- Osaka station?
Hi, the Shinkansen only stops at a few designated stations. In Osaka, the only station is Shin-Osaka. So you will need to go to Shin-Osaka via the shinkansen then transfer to a local train to get to Yodobashi Station.
@@KenshoQuest you are a life savor, thank you!
I will be in Osaka, Japan for 3 days and Seoul, Korea for 5 days. Any recommendations for SIM card which can use for both countries
Hi, if you are looking for an eSIM then I can recommend Airalo global eSIM:
airalo.pxf.io/75Pde3
coupon: MAY15 for 15% off first time users
But if you need an actual physical SIM then you will need to get two separate SIMs, one for each Japan and Korea.
For a physical SIM in Japan:
Japan Wireless ( Best for casual users ): www.japan-wireless.com/?via=kenshoquest
GET 10% OFF WITH COUPON: JWKENSHO
I do not have a good recommendation for Korea.
@@KenshoQuest do I need to buy before I go?
How about Skinensan tickets? Buy before I go ?
when can you pickup the reserved tickets with Klook?
As long as you are within your 30 days of using the tickets you can pick them up. In fact, if you receive QR code then you can do it now. But Klook just made it easier if you have a QR Code, you no longer need to visit the ticket machine unless you want to change your reservation. You can now just go straight to the shinkansen ticket gate, choose the one that accepts a QR code and at the other end of the gate it will issue you our seat reservation.
@@KenshoQuest Thanks for the update. How does the gate cope with multiple tickets on the one QR code?
🌸 Heidi
@@KenshoQuest Would November 20th through December 8th be considered a busy time of the year? Trying to buy tickets online feels SO confusing!
@@hellopaulyen That’s not a particularly busy time of year in Japan.
Aloha, my grandson is 6 yr old and it says he rides free but doesn't get a seat, does he sit on my lap?
Sorry for the confusion. Since he is 6-years-old, he will need a ticket purchased for him. Children younger than 6-years-old can ride for free and sit on someone's lap in reserved cars.
@@KenshoQuest Mahalo, for clearing that up for me..
Are all tickets just one way?
Yes. You can buy a separate ticket for the return trip. Sometimes if you are purchasing directly from a Ticket Machine at a train station, there is an option for round trip.
Why pay a 10% fee when it is so easy to buy yourself?
A 10% service fee? That's quite hefty for a digital service!
I do not need Klook lol
