The moral I keep getting from your videos is this… “If Forrest Gregg is your head coach, do the exact opposite of what he tells you, and things will work out.”
Gregg wasn't a horrible coach; his teams were lousy. they were trying for Ditka magic... Hell of a line man, better coach than Star (loved him as a person 1st then player, but...coach?) punting on 3rd down?!?
I was 10 years old and from New York when this game was played. Having only been into football for about a year and knowing very little about either team, I knew both teams were not good. Both teams played with so much heart. After this game I always had a soft spot for the Lions. I mean, one team was going to have its heart broken.
Back in the day I was watching that game on Thanksgiving day on my CBS affiliate before it became a FOX affiliate WAGA TV channel 5 in Atlanta before I ate Thanksgiving dinner
I was driving my wife to the hospital for the birth of our 1st daughter. I heard the call on the radio but never saw the video until today. Of course I will never forget it!
The Silverdome/Ford Field must be cursed. That play, Rodgers's untimed down hail mary, recently the record braking FG, Favre's long pass to Sterling Sharpe in the playoffs, and etc.
The Stanley Steamer owned this game in the second half. 2 TD catches and then the icing on the cake an AmZing dramatic punt return for a score to win the game with only 40 or whatever seconds left to play.
Thank you for making this video I was 6 years old when this happened grew up in Wisconsin I thought Walter Stanley was the bomb come to find out he was the bomb for only one day lol But it was a memory that I will never forget I will always appreciate Walter Stanley! Thanks again
I was at the game, and remember looking up at my dad as Stanley cruised towards the end zone. He just shrugged and laughed. The two guys near us looked like they wanted to chuck their portable radios onto the field.
Almost played with Walter in High School at South Shore 79-80 season Injured at beginning of season Lost track of the game for a short period , congratulations Walter for the record books Eugene
Forrest Gregg is said to be the FINEST player that Vince Lombardi has ever coached....so the Lombardi discipline is definitely instilled here. But you can CLEARLY see that Coach Gregg wasn't too upset with the results of Stanley's punt return. Lol
If Lombardi said someone is the finest .... then you can be assured that person was actually a sellout s°d°mite freemason scum. Dont believe the hype. Look deeper.
Great stuff again. I've been to probably 15 Thanksgiving games here in Detroit. Nothing like 80,000 screaming for Barry back in the Silverdome. But was not at this one. Lol
I recall a similar incident with the Vikings under Bud Grant. Can't remember who disobeyed the coach, but the player made a game-winning touchdown. Grant said to him, "Nice run. If you ever do that again, you're fired." You can look it up.
I came to your channel after watching your video with Tom, and after checking out some of your content I can say you do very good and interesting videos and you get way less credit than you deserve.
To be fair, Walter Stanley had the speed but his hands were inconsistent. I don't know how many times he dropped easy passes but that happened a lot. The best and worst of him came the next year against the Lions in the same stadium. He had 6 receptions for 150 yards and a touchdown (most of it in the first half) and the touchdown was on a short pass that went for 70 yards. But he also lost a fumble and made a bonehead move on a kickoff. The Packers had jumped out to a 31-7 lead in the second quarter and then the Lions scored a touchdown to make it 31-14. Then they kicked off and Stanley caught the ball at the 1 but moved back into the end zone to down the ball, thinking he had a touchback. But instead he had scored a safety for the Lions to make it 31-16 (I watched this game with my dad and he shouted out 'That's a safety! You moron!' when that play happened.). This actually kept the momentum in the Lions favor and they stormed back to take a 33-31 lead before the Packers came back to win 34-33.
I came up with a Top Ten Thanksgiving Day NFL moments within the last two years. I never considered this moment. Honorable mention? And I noticed the Nixon gap pitch change on your audio part way through.
Yeah the audio change was because I finished recording, then found footage of that punt return called back while editing that I did not know at the time I wrote the script, and was fascinated by that to the point where I had to add that line in
A block in the back penalty would be at the bottom of my list of concerns when nobody is blocking for the returner since the other 10 guys are all rushing the punter. I'd be a lot more worried about having the ball stripped from my returner if he were to be swarmed by up to 4 or 5 tacklers at once. As for the actual punt return, props to Stanley for taking advantage, but the Lions coverage was atrocious.

I remember this game like it was yesterday. One of the few bright spots in two decades of bad Packer football between Lombardi and Holmgren.

This is my favorite GB play, Freeman game ending on the ground -thigh catch is so close.

Forrest Gregg - "That's fine, that's really fun".
Who knewa matchup between two teams below .500 would end up being so entertaining?
That block on the kicker was NIIIICE

Chicago’s Dave Williams punt return in 1980 In overtime was pretty classic too.
I was at that game as a kid!!! So cool to see it again. I remember this lady lions fan was so mean to me and then I got to laugh in her face😂

Nothing but Lions on the screen. That was an amazing play. Gregg should have let him return it. One minute left take a chance.
ONE MAN LEFT IT'S ARNOLD!!! HE'S GONE!!! HE'S GONE!!!

There were probably 20,000. The third deck seemed vacant, from what I can recall.
I remember watching this live and always wondering what ever happen to Walter Stanley.
Ironically he ended up in Detroit in 1989 and was one of the leading NFC punt returners THAT season.
Man, I remember watching this game. I lost my voice screaming my lungs out that day. Best. Thanksgiving. Game. Ever.

Charlie West 98 yard punt return vs Washington,1968.
That announcer is pretty bad

Nobody steals defeat from the jaws of victory like the lions

From Mesa State, now Colorado Mesa University. Looks like he could have had a pretty good first few years of his career if the Packers could block.
Do a video on Leon Lett’s botched play vs the Dolphins
Sometimes, being disobedient can work out!

@@OfficialJaguarGator9 I might give that Top Ten list at the end of these videos. At this rate, though, you’re going to put us in a tryptophan coma.
Too bad TBuck couldn't play D. He got burned too many times jumping routes as I remember.
