I’m glad you brought this to attention. I’ve been telling this story for years. The ‘85 Patriots were a great football team, but they didn’t hit their stride until Grogan took over the role of starting QB/offensive coordinator. Having gone 6-1 in the 7gms in which he played, Grogan suffered a broken leg, yet continued calling plays for starting QB Tony Eason. This made the patriots team to be reckoned with and led them to the playoffs, where they beat somme damn good teams on the way to an AFC Championship
@@andrewpestotnik5495 McMahon would audible quite a bit as he had acrimony with Ditka quite a bit. The game where Drew Bledsoe had 70 attempts against the Vikings in the '90's, it was his playbook to turn that game around as Parcells gave him full autonomy. Lombardi only had 18 to 21 plays in his playbook & Walsh scripted the 1st 15 to 25 plays of the game for his offense.
I was at this game. Grogan single handedly turned the game and the season around. The players and fans had no faith in Tony Eason. Grogan's leadership, ability, and guts were phenominal! After winning this game, with Grogan at the helm, the Pats won an additional 5 games in a row. Grogan was voted team MVP in 1985. Unfortunatly he suffered a season endng broken leg against the Jets in week 12 .
If nothing else, this proves why having a solid veteran backup who may not know/be able to execute every play, but at least the plays he likes and is most comfortable with.
Those bears gave up 10 points total in the postseason. 3 of them because Walter Fumbled in their own territory and the other 7 came after the Bear were already up 44-3. Perhaps the most dominant defense of all time.
Good video and content that was a amazing decision and rarely do you hear about it when the 85 team comes up I always wondered if pats would of won three straight road games if Grogan was QB
Grogan is proof that you had better have a capable backup QB because if your starting QB goes down, you can't let your team go down with him. Grogan helped save the Pats' season and they definitely wouldn't have made the Super Bowl without him.
Grogan reminds me of Carl Yastrzemski. When Jim Rice was injured in 1975, the Red Sox coaches asked Yastrzemski (then age 36 and with a bad left shoulder) if he could go back to left field. He said, "Ha! I can play left field in my sleep!" Yastrzemski played like a maniac and drove the Red Sox into the World Series.
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about an incident before the season that threatened to tear the Patriots apart but ended up bringing them closer together.
loved those pat days. ne was the siberia of the nfl where no players wanted to play as pats played in their h s stadium and played fourth fiddle on the boston sports scene with pat stories on the back pages of the sports section. then bears laid a s b whooping on pats. good times. and stop hating on grogan. pats blew it with mr. small and fragile tony eason.
U know Eason didn't even complete a single pass in the super bowl. Also I never thought about It like that, people were proud to be red Sox and Celtics fan but the pats no way they sucked

I always liked Steve Grogan. He was a class act. I was unaware of Coach Berry’s amazing decision. Thank you for the history.
I love the New England content
Like in most of your videos, I did NOT see that move coming. I've said it before but your videos are truly amazing. You really do know your shit.
Grogan was from another era where QB's were used to calling there own plays. They started going away from the QB doing that in the '80's.
I don't think Lombardi, Ditka, or Walsh let their QB's call their own plays from the start.

He looked great in a neck roll too

Always liked Raymond berry as a coach
Winning season in his first four full season as pats coach
Steve Grogan threw the only TD Pass in Super Bowl XX.
They got bulldozed by the Bears in the Super Bowl

Steve Grogan played at Kansas State from '72 to '74.
There logo in the thumbnail is the best version of their logo.
As Eason was shown leaving the field up the runway Patriot fans were pelting him with various objects incredible i remember it well
Tecmo legend Steve Grogan
I have the 85 version
Pats offensive line that year was a brick wall.

9:24 would be the last time a team fumbled a routine snap in a game involving the Bills
“Knees are weak, palms are sweaty” 😂🤣
Vomit on his uniform mom’s spaghetti
@@Born8etter right. How did no one get that.
And this was the last time the Patriots would be saved by a backup quarterback
Steve Grogan, pre-Neck Roll

Agreed. He still had some magic left in that right arm.
And of course, the Patriots proved that yet again 16 years later when their All-Pro QB Drew Bledsoe went down early on in the season...
@@ReveiwKing999 I’ll bet he was replaced by some bum off the street…
Jon Kitna when Carson Palmer was hurt really killed us in 05

I’m looking at Mac Jones in shotgun formation tonight in the 1980s uniforms and I swear I’m seeing Tony Eason.
6:23 for one of our favorite catchphrases
Did one of the Super Bowl wins had a better half time adjustment? I still can’t believe they beat the falcons
Falcons beat themselves with poor play calling/clock mismanagement and lack of execution throughout the 4th quarter
WE WENT TO THE SUPER BOWL THAT YEAR
GOT SMASHED BY THE BEARS BUT WHO WAS BEATING THEM AND MY DAD WAS HAPPY AS A BEARS FAN
If Miami didn't lose to the Patriots, they were the only offense that could beat the Bears 46 Defense.

1985 is not a season worth remembering for the Buffalo Bills
Someone should have saved them from those horrible blue jerseys
Happy December 1st.
Just to think that the Patriots could have Dan Marino... oh well. Eason was a bust. Heck, Ken O'Brien had a good career
Season was save just to be crushed by the 🐻 😂😂😂
The bills nearly beat the pats in buffalo that year
