  • Imagine going into the AFC Championship Game without a kicker on your roster. Well, at the 1982 AFC Championship between the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets, that's sort of what happened with Miami. Due to an injury by Dolphins kicker Uwe von Schamann, and bizarre roster rules that left all rosters frozen at the end of the regular season, the Dolphins were left with 0 kickers on their team going into their biggest game of the season. And chaos ensued because of it. This is the story behind the 1982 Dolphins and the bizarre controversy that took place before the game

Kickers were so much more important back then, and as a kid I knew every teams kicker like I knew every team’s quarterback. A few notables here, I miss the old jets uniforms, that was a great time to be a football fan. The nfl was so much fun in that period between so many great juggernauts. The Steelers & Cowboys had gotten old, the 49ers were not yet the unbeatable force they would become. Being a Steelers fan, I did enjoy watching these games, especially after thinking there might not even be a season in 82

Remember it was in 1983 (the video said 82 but I thought it was 83, I'll have to look it up) that Mark Mosley won the MVP. As a Dolphins fan, I never trusted Von Schaman after the two misses (well blocked FG) against the Chargers the year before. But he was a decent kicker.

40 years later and this game still hurts. I truly thought the Jets were going to the Super Bowl. Miami defeated the Jets three times that season. As you said, Uwe replaced Garo a few years earlier. He was really good as you said earlier. How ironic that the Dolphins defense got so weak by 1984. From 1978 to 1981 the Jets were 7-0-1 vs Miami. But 0-3 in 1982. Excellent about a game in mid December. If Miami had not made that 47 yard field goal , the Jets could have been the 2 seed and hosted this game

Okay, I'm going to put my ignorance on display here for everyone to make fun of, but that's okay, asking questions is how you learn things. What, exactly is the rule now as far signing players off the street? The college season is over by the time the NFL playoffs come around, could you sign a senior who just completed his eligibility. And if you can do that, what's to prevent you from signing the top quarterback prospect as an "emergency substitute" and getting around the draft? I'm sure the scenario I described isn't legal, but what exactly is the rule that prevents it?
