  • Will Smith made his (preseason) debut for the San Jose Sharks as they lost to the Anaheim Ducks 4-3. Start with an up-and-down night from Smith, who flashed his vision and passing ability but also showed some issues that he will need to continue to iron out. Also, touched on Alex Wennberg's debut and how he will fill Logan Couture's role and Carl Grundström's debut. Then, Filip Bystedt showed a lot in his preseason debut for San Jose and why he is primed to have a massive role with the San Jose Barracuda, and Danil Gushchin continues to produce every time he gets an opportunity. Finally, Jake Walman showed how important he will be to the Sharks this season with two points and his ability to get the puck into the offensive zone. Plus, Jack Thompson and Jimmy Schuldt are given an opportunity to build some chemistry.

Bystedt had a great game. Looks like a legit 3c. Smith was definitely hit or miss but some of his passes to Toffoli surprised me even knowing his game.

I have always been high on Bystedt, even after his sub par season in the SHL last year I still thought he'd benefit from the narrower ice in North America and I think his AHL stint to end last season plus games like this show that h'e going to be an incredibly valuable piece to the next Sharks contender as a Suped Up 3C behind Celebrini and Smith. Love watching Bystedt play, he makes the right decision so often!

JD, do you think Will Smith will end up being better, the same, or not as good as Marleau was when his career is over? (A 2nd overall pick vs 4th overall pick, drafted in similar spots)
And, do you think Celebrini (in his NHL prime in a few years) will end up being similar in season-long point production, or not as good as Joe Thornton was? (Both 1st overall draft picks)
They’re all different players obviously, in size, style of play, etc.. but just wondering if you think Will Smith can equal Marleau’s point production, and if Celebrini can come close to Joe Thornton’s point production when the kids reach their prime in their mid-20’s.
Smith & Celebrini strike me as 25-35 goals and 50-60 assists each season when they hit their prime. Marleau was around 80 points in his prime, and Thornton was around 90-100+ points in his prime.
So, just wondering as I fantasize about the Sharks bright future, do you think Smith & Celebrini *will* put up points similar to that when they hit their prime… or do you think they’ll be very good, but not quite as good as 80-100 points multiple times in their career? (They obviously *can* do it, but do you think they *will* do it?)
