    Reasons why Microsoft Store is not great:
    - Some apps won't even install (at least for me), and their "app pages" are frequently broken plus UI is really bad
    - Microsoft store "running and updating in the background" is far worse than having notification about updates because they might update in middle of playing some game, causing lag issues
    - UWP apps have locked folders, which can be tricky if you need for instance additional files (x360ce.ini) to make some gamepads work on certain games.
    - Tiles in start menu seem to be running even when they aren't visible, and some of them even require internet so they additionally impact network. (this may have changed but last time I checked some app was causing lag issues for me)
    - Themes are garbage compared to win 7 in terms of ability to customize things. Plus, they still haven't figured out how to merge "legacy UI/explorer/old control panel" with win 10 UI (square/rectangular UI/metro or whatever it's called).
    Honestly, the only reasons why I haven't switched to Linux is because most games aren't available there and driver issues (I had some last time I tried ubuntu).

      While I agree with your points, you have to take into account that you clearly aren't the average user. The store doesn't seem to be the right fit for you, but for the average user, background updating is good, there is no need to access hidden folders and the problems with apps not installing, is probably not a universal thing, or it would be fixed already.

      Yeah, though they are trying, it's just that they are quite slow to push it which is a problem. I think they will eventually have more games when the studios they acquire for Xbox finally releasing games which are going to be available to Microsoft Store.
      The problem is there some chicken-and-egg problem here. Publishers don't seem to put their games on Microsoft Store when Steam exist on PCs. And many gamers (at least on the internet) seems to actively want Microsoft Store to burn, which affects reputation. I get it that Microsoft Store still has a lot of shortcomings, but many are just plain trolling it which affects the perception in general. This is part Microsoft fault too by not doing more marketing about Microsoft Store and trying to convince more publishers to put their games on Microsoft Store.
      For now, Microsoft Store is mainly for Play Anywhere titles and not much else. There are some indie games also popping up in Microsoft Store, but this will remain few not until Microsoft markets it.

    • @AmstradExin
      @AmstradExin 6 лет назад

      Huh? Have you even checked? They now have a nice library of old Xbox games for free! Many even with slight updates in graphics. I think they should continue that and put previously Xbox-only titles there and let them have a second chance.

  • @AQDuck
    @AQDuck 6 лет назад +32

    UWP absolutely ruins the games.
    UWP doesn't allow for proper fullscreen mode, instead it's using a hybrid borderless mode that, according to Microsoft, is far better than exclusive fullscreen, but in reality it's even worse than normal borderless.
    UWP also doesn't have support for ASync monitor (G/FreeSync) so the stutter you get from borderless mode can NOT be countered without VSync (which is also terribly implemented in UWP).
    In addition to UWP, Microsoft also made its shitty hybrid borderless mode default on ALL fullscreen games, meaning you have to go to the games' .exe file, go to properties and tick the box that says "disable fullscreen optimization".
    I'm in the pro-Win10 team, but the closer Microsoft is moving towards a console/mobile "experience", the closer I'm moving to Linux.

      Well Lothar Scholz I too now am skeptical about Microsoft's move. The themselves have even migrated their Skype engine to Facebook's react apis and the only way their app Gap will fill up is through the PWAs. I believe the UWP is a very powerful platform. But their usefulness in the older versions of windows just keeps declining. Win32 is a complete platform and even works fine with the older versions.
      No wonder Microsoft keeps forcing the feature updates to it's customers. I do hope that UWP finds its place among other platforms as it has grown to be a very powerful platform in the last 3 feature updates. The rest is upto Microsoft

    I'm ready to leave Windows behind the minute gaming on Linux becomes just as capable.
    Windows 10 has only been one big headache after another, mainly all because of the updates. At first they where only annoying, restarting the machine when it wanted, corrupting the windows store (which also disables the start menu i might add) and installing bad drivers, but a month ago one them actually broke the installation making me spend a lot of time getting the computer to start again. In the end i disabled windows update completely but i fear this isn't a good long term solution.

Microsoft is known as the world biggest discontinuing company so NO THANK YOU! first i want them to come clean on rendering computers as obsolete after they gave the green light on upgrading em to Windows 10, then i want the truth about stealing peoples data, u know, all those switches that accidentally enables themselves back after a windows update, basically pissing on us and our settings and choices, then i want an actual plan on how long they are going to support the product and or service, then lower the prices on their crap and then, maybe, maybeeeeeee... i will consider again spending money on Microsoft. i know some ppl will agree

    The store might not be bad, but super unnecessary if you know just a little bit about pc's. Sure you say the apps don't have to update manually, but that is a disadvantage too. I don't want apps running in the background when I'm not using them.. What I also really dislike about the store is, EVEN if a app is better there I don't see a point to switch between 2 times off applications all the time. I want all my software to be the same type. Also in an attempt to make everything seemless, clean and compatible with many devices apps remove functionality because it would be "too complex for a normal user".. The store feels like an attempt to control everything .. When windows 8 people showed (with slow adaption rate) that even though Microsoft has the market right now it might change super fast if Microsoft tries to "rule the world"

But Skype that does not come from the Microsoft Store does not have the same issues. And this is a Microsoft product, I cannot see that other apps could be any better. The Microsoft store regularly downloads applications we don't want like Candy Crush onto our PC. We never use the store and aren't signed into Windows with a Microsoft account. My guess is that if you're not using a Microsoft Account, the default action for the store is to install garbage free-to-play games.
    But hey, I guess that's the price of the free 'upgrade' to Windows 10 everyone got the year it launched.

      Yeah, and still mandatory updates in the background are a pain. Why can't I choose what to do with my computer? Sometimes I need to use it and I don't have time to wait for updates to install... is it too difficult to make the user choose to install them automatically or manually?
      Microsoft doesn't want you to choose because, let's make it clear: even if windows isn't spying on you right now they can push an update whenever they want and you CAN NOT opt out.

    Microsoft doesn't respect user's privacy, and Windows 10 is intrusive. Imagine a world where software stays this way as we move towards EVEN MORE TECH in our lives. This is why I prefer free and open-source software. Is this off-topic? Not as much as you think. The Windows Store, if it gains traction, will just be like the Play Store on Android, which requires you to have Google Play Services (milking you for data 27/7). This creates monopolies, and I refuse to make it easier for them.

But yeah, you have to put some effort in to become a linux-user, but then again; it is a for-free operating system without ads unlike my desktop PC with Windows, which I _paid_ for and *DOES* have bloody ads! o_O ...why?

    • @Jeinzi
      @Jeinzi 6 лет назад +4

      Inb4 no Windows hate
      The user-friendliness of Linux really depends on the distribution and desktop you choose. I think when people hear Linux, many of them think of some nerd using arch+i3, working on the terminal and using keyboard shortcuts only.
      Take Linux Mint: As easy to install as Windows, most likely works out of the box without problems. I suspect most people without a special interest in computers would do quite well with Mint and have everything they need: Office suite, email client, browser, music and video player, Spotify, photo and basic video editing etc. Also Minecraft!
      Linux desktops run fluently on very old hardware: 2GB of RAM and 20GB of HDD are recommended for comfortable use of the latest Mint. I installed it yesterday on a flash drive and the clean system used just under 6GB of memory, including most of the above mentioned software. I checked with a Windows 7 installation, and the OS _itself_, without additional software, used up 54GB of memory.
      Linux desktops can be beautiful af, you can make it look like a Mac, or like a Win10, or everything else.
      But in my opinion, the lack of a package manager is the biggest flaw in Windows. I don't know how people, including myself, put up with that. Windows is updating itself when it wants to and whether the user wants or not and a lot of software and its updates must be downloaded on the corresponding website and installed manually. Java, Steam and other software packages either install an auto-updater which slows down system startup, or update themselves when you want to use them. The Microsoft store is a step in the right direction, but it doesn't go far enough. This is something where Linux distibutions are far ahead of Windows in terms of user friendliness. Image you would have to manually install updates for every app on your phone.
      Problems with Linux arise when you need Photoshop instead of GIMP or Microsoft Office instead of Libre Office, for example. I myself dual boot into Windows for CAD and games.

    The Microsoft Store has been on my bad side for a while but not because of any of the reasons you mentioned. Mostly because the Windows search isn't smart enough to recognize that I already have an app installed. So when I search for something like Slack, which is also in the store . . . the first result in the start menu search is Slack in the Microsoft Store. It's followed by "Search Bing for Slack", and then by the actual Slack installer that I downloaded. Finally, the fourth result is the Slack application that I installed. I thought I had disabled all this Cortana search crap!

    • @ArawnOfAnnwn
      @ArawnOfAnnwn 6 лет назад +11

      I'd actually say its simpler, however, the reason for that is bad - they hidden away a lot of the settings you want to tweak the system i.e. the old, comprehensive Control Panel is gone in favor of the new, shallow Settings app that you have to maneuver through to somehow find what you wish to change. This seems to have been a deliberate effort by Microsoft to stop users from messing with their system.

    • @DominiX32
      @DominiX32 6 лет назад +4

      Mendicant Bias Yeah, the only thing I miss the most is the olschool, iconic Control Panel. It still exists, but is more and more discountinued after every update. After 2 years of using Windows 10 I can't get used to that one particural thing. And what's worst, with every update Microsoft changes arrangement of settings in Settings app. You can't get used to it because it's constantly slightly different. I think they have no idea what it should look like and are experimenting until they find the best arrangement.

    For movies, I'd actually suggest buying it and then try to rip it yourself, then try to seed it (better if you can do it on a PT site that people won't run away) so that in case you lose your copy somehow, you can try grabbing the "backup" back from whoever torrented your seed before. Or just torrent your copy when you lose your genuine copy. Yeah it's kinda a grey move but there's nothing wrong with trying to preserve your own right to watch a movie.

    2 things which killed microsoft store about the games: issues with downloading files (when games took 60-100GB). You had to start from beginning when something happend like: your internet stopped working for 5 seconds etc. I was downloading Forza Horizon 3 twice or even more because of that.
    Second - any possibility to backup your game folder and bring it for your friend or just when you are doing disk format. When your games are so big why you can't make a backup as in Steam or at least verify files like battle.net or Uplay.
    We could talk about optimalization or prices for game which they launched year ago (same as premiere :P) but that's enough...

    For some reason, on my Windows PC, I cannot access the Store or any Microsoft apps, like Skype. I am also unable to update my computer. I am not complaining.

    My biggest problem is that you cannot uninstall programs directly from the Windows Store page, very sloppy.

    I only use the Microsoft Store for Netflix because the Netflix app allows us to download episodes and movies for offline viewing.

    issue i have with windows store:
    - if you don't make an accout it will be over verbose asking you even to install free apps;
    - it will automatically update.. wich is a pain in the ass in windows as often does not respect its own schedule (somehome after soe update it "forgot", less than one month ago, i thing te gdpr update, it also reverted my UEFI settings for fastboot);
    - it is filled with trash app, the play store feels higher quality.. probably they dont have many apps and so they end up "pushing" lower quality ones?
    having to deal with win at work and linux at home, i feel microsoft is really slowly loosing this fight.

    From developer perspective changing program to MS Store compatibility requires latest Visual Studio as IDE, signing and lot of stuff to learn and change. As benefit program will work slower than before.

    Honestly I sometimes use the Windows Store for games and programs the only problem is that I have a quite slow internet and the Store always updates at the worst moment.

    things that I hate about windows store
    1. no option to uninstall apps directly from the store, its very annoying .. just add an option in the downloads category
    2. no quick view for the changelog, have to open the app everytime where most of the time no changelog is mentioned
    3. why am I updating calculator app again n again ? did the way of multiplication changed ? its not like you are a third party company that needs access to bug the system, win10 is already a spyware
    4. ratings are horseshiit, 2-3 reviews even for some popular apps
    5. big downloads of games fails quite often
    also while they are at it, why not add an option to keep movies and tv app always on top
    and change audio stream for dual audio files(usually both starts overlapping if you choose another)
