    I'm a metal singer and singing teacher. I specialize in distortions - what people would call false cord, vocal fry, screaming, growling, grunting, grit, rasp, yelling. Basically, vocal texture!

    Lyrics:
    Stapled shut, inside an outside world and I'm
    Sealed in tight, bizarre but right at home
    Claustrophobic, closing in and I'm
    Catastrophic, not again
    I'm smeared across the page, and doused in gasoline
    I wear you like a stain, yet I'm the one who's obscene
    Catch me upon all your sordid little insurrections
    I've got no time to lose, and I'm just caught up in all the cattle
    Fray the strings
    Throw the shapes
    Hold your breath
    Listen
    I am a world before I am a man
    I was a creature before I could stand
    I will remember before I forget
    Before I forget that
    I'm ripped across the ditch, and settled in the dirt and I'm
    I wear you like a stitch, yet I'm the one who's hurt
    Pay attention to your twisted little indiscretions
    I've got no right to win, I'm just caught up all the battles
    Locked in clutch
    Pushed in place
    Hold your breath
    Listen
    I am a world before I am a man
    I was a creature before I could stand
    I will remember before I forget
    Before I forget that
    My end
    It justifies my means
    All I ever do is delay
    My every attempt to evade
    The end of the road

    Every time you say "I" with the false cord or false fold or what it's called I get a primal reaction and a surge of energy! I want to sing along so badly but I'm trying to take it slow and trying the steps in your videos. I'm gonna get there, I've decided I want to be able to make sounds like that consistently!

    Whenever i even try to attempt the light false cord thing, I have a kermity sound, even as I am learning to have a lighter coordination ( definitely not there yet).
    Is this because I'm trying to engage false cords directly and not via twang as you have mentioned in other comments? Or some other mistake a beginner would make?
    Opinions? Suggestions? Comments? Lessons?

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  4 месяца назад

      The kermity sound is the root of the tongue usually. Basically, you're moving your tongue in a different way. This will sound wild, but, if we think of the larynx as elevator levels or stories of a building, level 1 is your true vocal folds, level 2 is your false vocal folds, level 3 is the epilarynx/aryepiglottic fold space - which is our twang zone -, level 4 is the epiglottis/root of the tongue. So, depending on how you're thinking about it, you're either too low or too high in your anatomical map. You're always welcome to book a lesson if you want www.alikikatriou.com

    Hi! Amazing cover! !!
    But I have a question about the distortion... Why don't you sound like a Mongolian throat singer in the verse (chest voice + false fold distortion), but rather like a cool metal singer? 😂 Do you use less air and compression or what is it?
    Thanks!

    • @AlikiKatriou

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  2 года назад +1

      Off the top of my head, start on a loose false vocal fold distortion around A3 in chest voice, then slide up to an F4 sharp & just at the end increase the volume of your vocal folds so it almost cleans up the sound 100%. It's all false fold.

    So falsetto + false cord sounds darker and lower than chest voice + light false cords to my ear. Chest voice + light false cords sounds brighter, lighter, higher. Is this because the amount of false cord you put in it is light, and if you used the same amount of false in chest voice that you used in your falsetto it would sound darker/lower? Or am I just way off base?

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  5 месяцев назад

      Oooo, so yes and no. Yes to the theory of what you're saying. So, yes to the hypothesis that if I add more false fold to my chest it will sound darker.
      "No" in the sense that this isn't what I am physically doing in this instance. The reason chest + light false fold sounds brighter is because the primary strategy for engaging the false vocal folds in this way and this lightly, is to use twang. The twang will add brightness and will allow me to engage the false vocal folds very lightly.
      When I'm in falsetto, I'm not using twang, so that brightness isn't there, and I am engaging the false vocal folds directly from the false folds themselves, rather than "from above" via twang. As a result, the entire system will be in a looser state and that will result in a darker sound. I hope that made some sense :)
